Texas Heat - part 2

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

Lordy! I'd almost forgot what it sounded like! It's raining...just off and on, but it's raining!

Congrats Linda! 38 days here without rain. My lawn may be past the dormant stage, oh well, I don’t do lawn. If it dies more room for wildflowers!

GD, unfortunately for the art world I have painted animals. My last attempt was a woman walking a English Bulldog. When it was done I titled it “Woman with Big Gopher on Leash”.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

:O Woooo hoooooo Linda . . . send some of that out here please )
lol @ Woman with Big Gopher on Leash . . . well don't ya like Gophers? jus' fun'n ya . . . I'm sure it wasn't that bad. Ya know what they say about painting . . . pratice makes a big mess ;)

Ok speak'n of art / painting . . . here's the scoop on starting a new forum for Painting/Artist (or any new other topic).

As mentioned above . . . I sent a D-Mail to DG Admin inquiring about starting an Art Forum. Here's the basic info in the reply. Sounds easy enough to me . . . provided enough people realize there is such a thread discussing the topic to get involved.

I'm not sure what the standard procedure is for making others aware of the thread, but I suppose posting a link in places that the topic (in this case - Painting) is being discussed would be one good way. Also maybe D-Mail a link to those you know that may have an interest in the topic? So I started a thread over there am linking it here http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/634868/ . . . so we'll take it from there and see what happens?

A member posts the suggestion in the Dave's Garden forum here:
http://davesgarden.com/forums/f/dg

The administrators will watch such threads pretty closely to see how much interest is generated by the topic. After several days (possibly even a few weeks) of monitoring the thread, they can get a "feel" for the level of sustained interest, take the suggestion under advisement and make a decision.

I can't believe how hot it was today! Well, I reckon we all know that by now...lol Tomorrow is our waterin' day...so I'll have to start REAL early since I work late tomorrow night.. :p

awwwww that's soooo sad :( they shouldn't put that hummingbird feeder out in the sun like that . . . look it's empty too :(

jus' fun'n ya Nada . . . that's a cool look'n cactus . . . do those not mormally get that large?

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

until hers I hadn't seen them this large. I liked pics I had seen of smaller ones... but now I REALLY want one of these.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

I had a pencil cactus about 5 and a half feet....but it froze back last winter....but goodness, you'd touch the silly thing and it'd spit white gummy sap at ya...lol.. :p

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I have one that is about that size, mine is not quite as full. They do great in full sun, but do break occassionally. I have taken cuttings and rooted them for the Dallas Swap, are you coming to that one renatelynne??? If so I will put your name on the largest one.
Sheila

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

Yes Please. sheila. I'm working on getting to that one.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

OMG!!! It actually rained here this afternoon :) :) :) And it's still sprinkle'n :D

Dallas, TX

YES!!! Thank God ... we actually had a little storm, it was thundering and lightening! Would you believe it happen just as I got the timer on the soaker hose set for three hours? ... but who cares? We need all that Nitrogen!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Glad you got rain in big D, some did I guess in FW, but not us!! :-((
We had a few drops but not enough to even come in for. At least it did cool things off where it made it tolerable to work out doors. It took me forever to do anything in the humidity this morning, but after the clouds and breeze started I put out another 4 bags of mulch and trimmed the plastic that extended above the mulch in 45 minutes. DH finished the main run of Winsor stones on the long bed today. We have been working on that in the mornings on weekends for about two months. The heat runs us in by 11:30 am.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Just alot of mean lookin' clouds makin' a fuss around South Texas...but not much going on in the rain makin' area... : /

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Oh my goodness, and here I thought it was hot in SA....I'm at my parent's house near Corpus....and man...its HOT down here...muggy too....going back to SA tomorrow....where I think the foot of the hill country is definitely a bit more drier....not as much humidity.. :p

lol...for some reason, the grass of my parent's lawns are crawling with baby toads...all over the place! You can hardly walk out there without them getting stuck in your sandals...lol :p

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

We have toads galore too. Do they have a pond or creek nearby? Frogs that mated in the pond are really prolific!
As I was spreading the mulch yesterday I kept covering up the tiny little fellows.

I didn't get anymore rain out here today, but it sure has cooled off nicely since that shower we got yesterday. :) :) :)

And wow . . . did ya'll see the moon tonight? Sure is pretty! It's much nicer in person than what my little camera shows using it's 'night shot' feature, but you can get the idea ;)

The sunset was very nice tonight also . . . and this camera does a much better job when there's a little more light ;)

Yeah....that moonrise was beeeyootiful tonight...sat outside for awhile to admire it....with wee little leaping toads around my feet! lol... :D

And that tree frog is STILL chirping out there....a little chiiirrr brrrrr twittering sound... :)

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

HEY, Y'ALL -- yesterday evening I was sitting down letting the sweat dry a little after working ALL evening in the garden, and I SAW A LOVE BUG!!!!! You know what that means.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

ummmmm . . . yeah . . . that there will soon be a bunch of baby 'Love Bugs' around there? :D

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

That the seasons are about to change! To which my response is yippee -i-o-ki-yay!

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

lol...yep...tis the season that we're into HOTTER.....September will be HOTTEST.. :)

Dallas, TX

beautiful Pics GD! Aw cmon TX, it has to get better in September! I cnat take another month of this heat, my Hostas cant either:( I dont have clothes to wear to work anymore, I have resorted to jeeans and a shirt. I wish I was skinny so i could wear the really skimpy stuff! lol

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks Sylvia . . . . yeah I think it's gonna get worse befor it gets better. After all . . . this IS Texas ;)

But hey, look on the bright side. That means we have longer to grow things before the freeze turns thing that don't get brought indoors to mush :)

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

I'm hoping that the return of el nino means the end of the drought here. I want more RAIN! More important, they think the chances of those big disastrous hurricanes is much less with el nino (cooler water out there in the parts of the ocean/gulf which produces the big hurricanes) at least for this year. Of course, even if that's true, the general trend toward bigger badder hurricanes will continue eventually. Global warming marches on.

Rowlett, TX(Zone 8a)

Sylvia, one can only hope that this summer is not a repeat of last summer, when the temps in the Dallas area didn't get out of the high 90s/low 100s until mid-OCTOBER.
:-(

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

I swear, I watered my flowerbeds...and it sounded like a huge straw out there, lol. Just terrible! Heat index here in SA is 108 today....and soooo dry... I may resort to growing tumbleweeds after all....lol

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

What I want to know is why it's always either drought or flood. What's up with that anyway? I watered everything this morning and it's pouring here. I should know not to listen to weather forecasters. My pool is about to overflow and all the new mulch is floating away! I'll never forget the first heavy rain I saw after moving to Houston. I was from the east Texas piney woods, and we didn't have these kinds of deluges. I thought we were about to be washed away and I was really panicked. One of my neighbors told me it was "just a normal rain" here. I called my fireman husband at work and said "you better come home because it's going to wash the house away". Silly me, I now know it really was just normal Houston rain.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

oh my goodness, crowellli....us other folks to the west of you would give anything for that deluge that you're having right now....we're baking out here...with no end in sight... :( It'd be a blessing to have it right now...but I can understand the problems from having too much of it as well... :o

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

Yea... 1/2 my plants have forgotten what water is!

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

I think I hear high-pitched noises from outside. It's either the cicadas or I'm hearing my plants screaming for more water!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

MY DS, who lives south of me in Sommerville county, emailed me this morning and said that Sunday they had roofers tear off the old roofing to re-shingle. Thirty minutes later out of a clear sky came a heavy thunder storm. The kitchen ceiling almost colapsed. The sheetrock is ruined and everything was leaking. She said they had about two inches of rain in a short time based on what they caught in the pans and bowls sitting around. She said they hadn't had a good rain in almost 3 months and it waited until the day there roof was being repaired. Needless to say she is pretty bummed.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

daaaang, Sheila...I can well imagine that she is bummed... : / What a mess...!

lol Linda and Nada.....like I told GD once, its so hot and dry that my trees are whistlin' for dogs... :D

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I don't know how they could even do that with dry lips! LOL!!

Dallas, TX

You guys are funny ... we got some kind of warning here about the heat index ... supposed to be 108 and 85 at night. I guess I better leave the fan going for Sara and Sedrick.
I could have sworn the it got better in September ... or did we have off and on days. I am so POed they cut down that tree it shaded my bedroom.... my poor kitties and is why I have to leave the fan on with all that sun coming in here now.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

And it's another hot one again today . . . I turned on my water faucet and dust came out for 30 minutes :O

100% chance of sunshine and no wet stuff in sight here in south central Tx. Looks like it's time for another rain dance for this area.
