Texas Heat - part 2

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

Well it's here; it probably doesn't know where "Deep East Texas" is. LOL.

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

not a drip here.......waaaahhh

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

Oh maybe I was hogging it all, sorry will send it along directly.

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

thank you april.....we need it!!!!

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

Send some here too......does anyone else wonder why Missouri City is in Texas and not Missouri?

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

Fly did you know there is a Kansas City Missouri?

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

And I wonder why.

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

I don't know but did you know there is a town close to you called Onalaska- what's that all about?

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

I heard that the same person named it that named Missouri City.

Goldthwaite, TX(Zone 8a)

I've been by Onalaska and wondered. Texas is so big that every time I travel, I see the name or go through some town I never heard of before.

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

One day my neighbor introduced me to her mother. She said she was from Paris, so I started asking about the weather and various things. And she politely answered. After about 10 min, they start laughing and said Paris, Texas!

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Been there, how about Geneva. It's in Texas...so not neutral.

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

I grew up in Italy THE COUNTRY, but moving to Jasper Texas and telling kids there about it was a chore when they thought it was Italy Texas!

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Italy to Jasper Tx ~ now that's what I call culture shock!

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

Oh it was!

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

I actually visited Onalaska and let me tell you if you think the name suggests something special, think again. Several years ago, like maybe 10 or more, it was a rather poor community and not the least bit cold. LOL.

Also I have been to Paris Calif and just recently ran across some other state w/ the name Onalaska- believe I noticed it on a new DG member.

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

It could refer to an old term like.....on blixen, on rudolph, on alaska.

Here is another interesting/odd bit of information; when I lived in Olathe KS, Johnson County, and contacted an agent to purchase auto insurance. Well after I fainted and the agent picked me up off the floor he told me that auto insurance in Johnson county KS was the most expensive insurance in the country. That didn't make much sense to me but I can tell you it was much more expensive than insurance in Tempe AZ. Sometime later I moved from KS to TX, Houston/Harris County. Went to purchase auto insurance and after the agent picked me up off the floor he told me that insurance in Harris county was the most expensive in the country. So how lucky am I to have lived in the 2 places in this country w/ the most expensive insurance!?

Fly
Just wondering if you've been drinking this evening?

Dallas, TX

Fly you been drinking? LOL
Renatelynn I was in Italy, Rome and Florence this March, how could you leave such a lovely place?
April you been everywhere ... have you been to Miami? Florida...that is. Thats where the cheapest car insurance were. I had a major shock when I got here.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

lol @ all the strange names for places . . . when I was in high school I had a crush on a gal and was heart broken when I heard she was moving to Paris . . . it was only slightly better when I found out it was Paris, Tx. That didn't really help much since that's like a ba'zillion miles from San Antonio to a kid that wasn't even drive'n yet . . . lol

Another little oddity for ya'll . . . I was headed out to Odessa one time and had to make a little zig-zag off the main route to drop off a horse for a friend . . . on the way back to the main interstate, I came to a town and the sign read "Rankin - population 573" (or something like that) . . . I was like . . . HEY!!! Wonder if they'd let me have the key to the city if I stop and tell them that's my town :D After all . . . it had my name on the sign ;)

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

...or ever been to Miami ~ Oklahoma!
How incongruous....

lol @ ya'll and the funny names.....The first time that I actually drove to Boston was waaay back in 97....and while driving thru the piney woods and all of that RED dirt, I actually drove thru a town called "Bobo."....Now where in the world did that come from, lol... If I remember correctly, Bobo had a population of 4 folks sittin' on the porches of their 2 homes....lol Texas county names are sort of interesting too....My favorite is San Patricio...or is that the name of the town? Hmm.........anyhoo, I love it, being Irish and all...lol

Irish folks actually settled out that way...and they have a pretty decent St. Patty's Day get-to-gether. :D

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

Oklahoma has alot of interesting towns named and honored after Native Americans.....Broken Arrow, Stillwater, Ponca City, Mustang, Shawnee, Chickasha, Choctaw.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Absolutely right...fly_girl, I've driven thru Oklahoma a few times...and loved all of the town names there. I have a few Native friends from Oklahoma whose nations represent the town that they live in... :)

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

I love their heritage and culture. I have a friend that is Native American, she told me I was white with a red heart. The best compliment ever.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

There is only one county in all of Texas named for a woman. Anyone know what it is? It's in east Texas and named for a Caddo Indian woman..... I'll post the answer after a few guesses if nobody knows, which will really surprise me.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Hmmm....Panola...? Or Nacogdoches? lol

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

I didn't have a choice to leave Italy. I was a child... *giggle My parents moved back here to Texas and I had to tag along.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Or is it Marion....? lol

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

The county is Angelina which means "little angel" in Spanish. The county seat is Lufkin. I went to college there and I think that's where I picked up this bit of trivia. (That was so long ago, it's a miracle I remember any of it.)

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Would that be Brazoria County?

lol @ Bobo . . . was that one named after me?

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Ahhh ok Crowellli . . . I should have known that!!! lol

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

Ok well some of you may have noticed that my last name is Willis- by marriage anyway- but I believe that Willis TX and Willis CA- both of which are not huge metropoli (isn't that the plural for metropolis?) should give me the key to the city or at least make me the mayor!

Ponca City- when my former husband worked for Conoco we were transferred there. I didn't go, opting instread to stay in Houston and complete my nursing degree. Wonder now how different my life would have been- pretty sure the marriage would not have survived but gee living in Podunk OK, oops I mean Ponca City! WOW!

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

lol...now I know I'm getting us off subject again....but I was lookin' thru my photo files and found this wonderful one that I picked up in Boston...lol What a face and a smile... :)

Something along the same lines -- why are cities not in the counties with the same names? Houston in Harris Co., Dallas in Tarrant Co., etc. Just an observation. And I think Texas has a city for every letter of the alphabet except maybe Q. Is there one that starts with Q?

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

I found this one too....which for those of ya'll who aren't familiar with the Brush Country of South Central Texas....this is what it looks like....lol..
Sort of brown and crispy to say the least...but RICH in plant and arrowhead huntin'...and my favorite all-around place in Texas...this is close to my parents house...about 15 miles or so.... give or take a cactus...lol.. :)

I'd include Quanah and Quemado in there... :)

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

You are right about the counties and cities - I have often noticed that and wondered about it.

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

Momtgomery is in Montgomery county, I think
