What's growing - Part 5

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

...and just how closely have you ever looked at a coneflower?

Grampapa, the daylily that "doesn't belong" is 'Frans Hals'. It is a fairly old variety that has been widely sold for years. Maybe it was growing in the next row beside the others or your landscaper's supplier just picked up the wrong one. Daylilies all pretty much look alike when they are green. They are a nice color match even so.

Okay, okay! You win! (I'm humbled)

pixie and gardenmart, thanks for the ID on the errant DL. that's definitely it. They do look pretty good together. Any ideas on the other one?

Al, Keith H is a beautiful dahlia, w or w/o the dragonfly. wish I wasn't too lazy to plant dahlias (sigh)

nap, hope you got a dip in your pool. I'm waiting for the sun to go down a bit. I posted a 'Hi' to you on another thread, but I forgot which one...we're neighbors (practically). I had a black-eyed susan vine that I bought as a plant a few years ago that bloomed all summer...vined all over my fence. I enjoyed it a lot.

here's some 'American Dreams' coreopsis that comes up here & there and blooms sporadically. I think the Jap. beetles are eating it.

Hi, Gram! Yes, my aunt and uncle used to have a cottage in Wheatfield, on the river, and I used to love to go there. They have passed away and the cottage belongs to someone else now. I did go in the pool today. Wonderful. We've had the pool for about 25 years, and though I rarely go in anymore, it's still as refreshingly clean and sparkling as its first year. I'll look around for your greeting. Maybe it was Al's thread. And although Al got a closer shot of a coneflower than I did, I found a visitor who got even closer.....

Nancy - I'm sending you our hotter weather from here.

The insects are sure out - as I haven't really been after bug shots - but they are everywhere.

Al, I was going to make some comment about you and hot air, but decided not to. That's a great butterfly shot. I'd like to see that one side by side with Anita's.

I can take it - don't worry ;)

Here's a better shot of 'Frans Hals' proudly wearing his new identity

Andy...always one step ahead :-). I just came in and there are buds on my hosta.

nap, I lived in Depew for a few years in the 70's. when my son was starting school (oops, dating myself there). we moved to Wheatfield from Amherst about 4 yrs ago. love it here. now Al will have to get on the bee's foot to get in closer to the coneflower LOL then we'll have a pic of Al covered with pollen........actually, the closeups are pretty neat. I love the snapdragons in your collage. I should plant some. Haven't had any for years.

gram,
I like the color pattern on that one.
I almost got your pollen dusting last week when I was working and ran up against a hawthorn tree with cedar apple rust and my shirt and arm ended up orange with the dust from it.

What do you guys think about this tiger lily which is growing in my son's yard? It looks like it's a double or triple flower, doesn't it?

It is supposed to have a red and gold, double edge but I don't see it. This is only the first bloom so I guess i'll have to wait for the rest of the buds to open.

Pixie, where did you get a pansy in this heat? 'Hard Candy Christmas' is pretty as is. I see the beginnings of the gold. Bet it will be spectacular as it develops.

nap, that tiger lily is neat. seems like I saw a double in a catalog somewhere.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Gram ~ Believe it or not...that pansy was planted LAST year! I happened to notice something out of the cornor of my eye as I was going down the front steps and there it was all by it's self.

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

guess nobody explained the rules to the pansy LOL. big part of the fun of gardening is the surprises

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Gram ~ I agree...I love suprises! These are some of the ones that have re-seeded them self. Snap dragons and mallows re-seed too.

great pics you two...
Nancy, I've seen those double types at a friend's house. I wonder if they grow true from seed, 'cause I plan on swiping a few.

Great pictures. Thanks for the tour!

pixie, I know what you mean about volunteers. my kids (son & family) gave me a hanging basket of yellow violas for Mother's Day 3 years ago. Our pool is surrounded by river rock with a heavy landscrape fabric underneath. But those violas come up every year, spread, and have now reverted to their bi-color form on one side of the pool...still yellow on the other side. the landscaper thought they were weeds and wanted to spray them - glad I was home that day to stop him. I don't like chemicals around the pool (or anywhere else) anyway. there's a goldfinch trying to disguise himself as a viola LOL

gram

had to add..it was really foggy the day I took the 2 fuzzy ones. sorry for the quality, but I love the finch

WoW Gram...you have a few "volunteers" by the looks of it!

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

I think I need to get rid of some. dh is getting a little tired of them. I'll leave a few and they'll come back. I don't have the heart to get rid of them altogether. They were blooming in January this year.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Anita, this sounds like a stupid question, but what part of the tiger lily makes a seed? If I knew, I'd try to get some from that one at my son's.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

Nancy - if there will be seed, you have to look for a seed pod where the flower was. Once it is dried out, it will start to open. That is when the seed is ripe.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Some lillies have bulbils that grow along the stem. I could be wrong - but I think that Tiger Lillies are one of them. If they are - you will see tiny, brown "bulbs" growing at the base of each leaf. Eventually, weather permitting they will get little roots and come loose from the stalk - or the stalk will fall over and dump them on the ground. I plant them - shallowly and many of them come up the next year. They don't bloom that year because they are small. I only planted 6 Tigers and now I have at least 15.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Thanks for the helpful advice. I will keep an eye open. You guys are great.
