pixie, I know what you mean about volunteers. my kids (son & family) gave me a hanging basket of yellow violas for Mother's Day 3 years ago. Our pool is surrounded by river rock with a heavy landscrape fabric underneath. But those violas come up every year, spread, and have now reverted to their bi-color form on one side of the pool...still yellow on the other side. the landscaper thought they were weeds and wanted to spray them - glad I was home that day to stop him. I don't like chemicals around the pool (or anywhere else) anyway. there's a goldfinch trying to disguise himself as a viola LOL
