List of Plants to Take Cuttings On

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Has anyone successfully rooted a camellia cutting? I have 4 I took last November, stuck in my bubbler in the greenhouse, they put on new leaves and even a bud or two but no roots. I finally stuck them in some potting soil a few weeks ago after sticking them in some rooting hormone .. still no roots .. I'd appreciate any suggestions cause I really want some camellia!

how about herbs?

I know:
Rosemary ( in water)
Mint (soil, but heard it would root in waer too.... don't know)
basil???
thyme???
ect.....ect.....ect

I am going to have to try the Esperanza. I bought one 1gallon plant and it died but still watering it shot out 2 new stems, they are only about 4 inches high though. Still adding water every other day hope they row more. two plants for the price of one (at half-off) great deal!

scented geraniums-- a must, I have three in cups from cuttings, still trying to decide where to plant.

I LOVE this thread.......... Got to try everything...LOL

I accidentally broke a beautiful length off my basil. Cursed and stuck it in the ground just in case, and completely ignored it because I "knew" it wouldn't take. I now have another basil.

Thanks for all the ideas... we have rusian sage growing all over at work and thought it would look good/do well in my high desert garden... and now it looks like I won't even have to BUY any! And I have a butterfly bush, too, so looks like I can get free babies from that one, too!

A few things that have worked for me...
begonia in water - also in damp paper towels in the mail!
sweet potatoe vine (clipped from the potato) in water or soil (you can almost see the roots grow!)
any number of wandering jew in water
ficus tree in gel2root, but it took a long time
tomato in soil
miniature roses in soil
golden pothos in water and soil

Does anyone know if star jasmine will also root from cuttings? It seems like it should.

What about juniper? Has anyone tried rooting it and is successful, how? I have a stretch of gravel/weeds along the streets I'd like to use some in.

kmom246, I'm not sure about star jasmine, but I've rooted several night blooming jasmines (jasminium sambac). I took several cuttings a few inches long, removed growth from at least 2 nodes, dipped it in RH and put it in a small pot w/ a good potting mix. Leave at least 2 leaf nodes above ground w/ the leaves still attached and cut off everything above that. Keep it moist and you should see growth in a few weeks. Keep it out of direct sun...don't want the baby to fry!

All the thunbergia's are easy to root, they are just slow. I take trimmings about 6 inches long, strip off all the leaves but the top 2, then stick it into damp vermiculite so 2 nodes are below the top, then put a loose plastic bag over the top and set in shade. Then just wait about 8 weeks and don't let them dry out.
I actually use this same method for all my cuttings, even clematis. I love the double pot idea, gonna have to try that! :~)

Kmom, yes star jasmine or as we call it confederate jasmine roots fairly easily. I did root it in dirt, didn't try water.

nivlac, mint will root in plain water. I just stick it in a glass of water, put it in a sunny windowsill, and about a week or so later, roots!

I bet the camelia and juniper could be prop'd by a cutting or the layering on the ground method. In the Propagation forum there's info on a bubbler that sounds interesting.

I've got three cuttings of our Wisteria that I am trying to root in water.
Do you think it will root in water?

Has anyone tried to root tall garden phlox? If so, there's one at work, I'd love to take a cutting of.

I'm still watching my wisteria cuttings. I think they may be trying to root!
