A Saying You're Known By?

Ingleside, TX(Zone 9a)

ZuZu..it's called dialect...Not at all uncommon in the South. It's kinda like some goofs saying ath-a-leet for athlete!..or bray-ed for bread...Get the idea? LOL! I have to admit, I have one STRONG Southern drawl. To hear my talk, one might think I am "dumb as a box of rocks"..In fact, totally untrue.....Of course, nearly anyone who is NOT from the South, thinks WE are the ones with the accents..WE good folks, down here in the South, KNOW for a fact..It's YALL who talk funny!
Oh! The quote I am best known for:
THERE IS NO VACCINE FOR STUPIDITY!!!

Ingleside, TX(Zone 9a)

Gee pirl. Is the word "retarded" an affront to you? The correct way to speak of it is, MENTALLY RETARDED. It is not an ugly phrase. It is a proper phrase. I had a cousin who was mentally retarded..RETARD means slow, late, or less developed. Now, if it is used in an ugly, nasty, or mean way...Then there is no excuse. However, just because a person suffers from mental retardation, does NOT mean they are destined for a life of misery...

Again...STUPIDITY or IGNORANCE??
(see my previous post)

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

Turbo, I think the phrase "mentally retarded" is an affront to many people these days. If you were to use the phrase in Northern California, you'd be ostracized. It's politically incorrect, to say the least. I agree that "retarded" is a fine adjective and an apt description of the condition, but "challenged" seems to be the more courteous and more acceptable choice.

As for "prenup-chew-al," that's not a case of dialect. It's a mispronunciation common to newscasters and other people all across our nation and in other English-speaking countries. I really think they've never looked at the word "prenuptial" closely in print and assume it's spelled "prenuptual." It's similar to restaurateur: Everyone wants to pronounce that with the non-existent "n," assuming that if the guy owns a restaurant, he must be a "restauranteur."

tubosbabe96 - My daughter teaches children with all degrees of intellectual limitations including the autistic, those with Asperger's Syndrome, ADD, ADHD, etc. A child with Asperger's is quite creative and brighter than many children labeled "normal", often having one field of expertise where they surpass other children of the same age and even older children.

So, yes, I do take affront to one label fits all. Different levels in learning limitations should not be lumped together as "retarded". Zuzu's point is well taken and while many of us can view political correctness as being absurd in calling a manhole cover a "personhole cover", most intelligent adults attempt to empathize and wouldn't characterize all children with learning difficulties or retardation under one label.

Some of my big affronts have been covered above. A BIG sticking point is ending a sentence with "at". My Dad used to say, "It's behind the AT".

mid central, FL(Zone 9a)

i may not be known for this saying and it isn't grammatically correct, but i love it anyway. "i've got your back, lady" it means a lot to me.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Hey, I'd take anyone covering my back any day, grammatically correct ot not!

Ingleside, TX(Zone 9a)

Politically Correct! Now, there is a phrase that is WAY over-rated! I wonder how many folks on this board or in your life, or perhaps you have just been around..ever used the term "hare-lipped"??? That word is used day in and day out in order for some STUPID idiot to made a rude and crude joke! I dont see anyone rushing out to make sure the imbecile is made "politically correct"! Mental retardation is NOTHING to be ashamed of. It is our society that has made it a "bad" thing. Like the words "mentally challenged" are going to lessen the degree of retardation??? The diagosis of MR still stands in my medical books used today. HOWEVER, hare-lipped is not. Why? STUPIDITY..and unfortunately, there is STILL no vaccine for stupidity.

Politically correct, indeed!
HMMMMM....seems to ME..politics of NO kind are to be discussed on DG, any way! Therefore, I will leave it be. God Bless You All..the ones who can understand where I am coming from. The ones who cant...Instead of worrying what is and is not PC..try simply getting to know and understand your fellow human beings..be they MR or have any one of thousands of birth defects! It is AMAZING what one can learn from people, "different" from ourselves.

mid central, FL(Zone 9a)

turbo, if you are insinuating that zuzu, pirl, or any of the people on this thread are stupid and ignorant then you are the one with the problem. you haven't been on dg long enough to make these kinds of remarks about people you don't know and if you were a long-time member you would know better. my 2 cents and i think this whole thread has turned mean-spirited and not worthy of dg. edited to add, and that's a shame because it was a cute thread.

trax ..
A lil harsh in making such 'iffy' assumptions ...

Quoting:

Now, that's a mitey interesting statement.

Besides, trax .. you may be reading something more into turbo's comments, than s/he has stated. A lil xtra sensitive this morning, maybe -?-

mid central, FL(Zone 9a)

hey mags, taken out of context, it might well be thought of that way, but i believe i also stated that a long-time member wouldn't be making these harsh remarks in the first place. regardless, i don't see the need for all of these capital letters (aka shouting) about stupidity and ignorance and hare-lips. i mean, who brought up all of this talk of hare-lips? seems to me that someone else is being over-sensitive here.

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

Hi, Magpye --

I don't think Trax was misinterpreting those remarks. I felt affronted and I appreciate the defense.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I, as well. Thank you Debi.

mid central, FL(Zone 9a)

taking a bow.....backing out gracefully......hitting "un-watch" thread.......

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

Perhaps .. s/he too, felt somewhat offended also .. and has simply been attempting to state his/her perspective .. in the best way s/he could -?-

Reading back over the last dozen + posts .. it appears that there has been quite a bit of misinterpretation, judgment, and a loose-noose or two swung.

Perhaps, we can abstain from labeling (stereotyping) any mistakes .. contributed to ones' being a 'newbie' or 'long-time member'. Such, really doesn't pull any punches in the pecking order .. when it comes right down to it.

Mean, rude, and cruel .. all stacks-up the same way. None of us are infallible; regardless.

Perhaps if I just bring what's been called a "cute" thread back 'round we can all be satisfied, hmm? =)

Quoting:
There are lots of "opps didn't mean to say it like THAT" kinda things I've done....brought up from time to time as a family joke now =) but the sayings I am thinking of are those that you say regularly enough that people remember you by them.

I haven't yet adopted one and am hunting up good ones. =)

I love how when asked how he's doing, Dave Ramsey (radio host/financial expert) will always reply, "Better than I deserve." I think that is very fitting to remind me to be grateful and gives the listener pause to consider more than the dry reply, "I'm good."

Do you have any?

It is not so much our friends' help that helps us as the confident knowledge that they will help us.

Pirl, a comforting thought; an ancient truth. I was disappointed and hurt by a friend yesterday, but I know I have others who will never disappoint me...nor I, them. Which brings to mind a trite but true statement (not one I'm wont to say, but one I believe): A friend in need is a friend indeed!

My mother used to sing to us this song when one of us kids was grumpy:

♫Nobody likes me♫
♫Everybody hates me♫
♫I'm gonna eat fried worms.♫

I think it was to evoke a smile from us but it just made me grumpier. LOL at the things we say!

mid central, FL(Zone 9a)

my mother would come into my room in the morning with a little plate of scrambled eggs, throw open the curtains and sing out "rise and shine". i was not a morning person, even as a child! talk about grumpy...and those eggs...yikes! i still don't eat breakfast. lol

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Shocking! What about your "Breakfast of Champions"?

mid central, FL(Zone 9a)

oh, i still do that one, pirl!

i like this saying. even though i am not known by it, i do look on change as a good and needed thing.

change is what happens when the pain of holding on becomes greater than the fear of letting go. james thurber

I heard a good one today I could adopt (concerning people who bring you down):

"Don't let in the thieves of your smiles."

You wouldn't let a thief in at the door...why let them into your life? I really liked that one.

Tracks: I remember scrambled eggs were one of my mom's best things. She always mixed them with a slice of cheese, touch of milk and dash of butter and beat them so well they came out all yellow...no mixed parts of white in there. Yummy! Sounds just like a mom to be chipper like that though. =)

One of my favs is:

Quoting:
If there's a Remedy, why worry?
If there's NO Remedy, why worry?

I say it a LOT, LOL.

Ingleside, TX(Zone 9a)

My apologies to any and all who assumed I was insinuating ANY person or persons on this forum is ignorant OR stupid.I may not always agree with some on here and I am sure there are those who will not agree with me. However, never will I attack someone verbally, simply because our ideas are not the same. In fact, it great to get different opinions. How BORING life would be if we all spoke, felt, acted, and conferred on the same things!! I am grateful to ones like Magpye. People of her character make folks like me eager to return and LEARN all I can from. Others, it's kinda like, take whatcha need...toss the rest! Old timers who have forgotten what it's like to be new and still be learning..surely can scare a body off from this site.... To the one(s) that ASSUMED they KNEW my intentions and can read my mind, dont forget..YOU, too, were new once. Life..ya learn it as ya go..

OK everybody.....let's all be nice and not run with scissors!
In the (in)famous words of Rodney King, "Can't we all just get along"?

Because I have the distiction of being the poster boy for bad luck, the saying I'm known for is, "You're not gonna believe this".....

JD, I'm thinking of you today. Sorry for your loss. Concentrate on the good memories, Kiddo.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I bet your sense of humor is helping out right now, Mike. Thanks for the words of wisdom from RK. Isn't it amazing what goes unreported in the press!

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Thanks Zuzu...I appreciate it !!! This one's going to take some time....

Good memories...you bet !!!!

Tir Na Nog,

Nobody likes me
everybody hates me
guess I'll eat some worms, was our version. It usually evoked a ''stop it'' because we didn't want to cheer up so fast. Funny how alike we were as kids!

Satsuma, AL(Zone 8b)

At work it's "do what you believe is best for your career"...usually when I see an employee making a poor choice. :)

Aurora, CO(Zone 5a)

Gosh, when I opened up this thread to add to it, I didn't expect it to be so, um, "heavy." I was just going to say that I often take a page from Gandalf's book, and often say:

"Expect me when you see me."

Life's very uncertain, and sometimes I don't know if I'm going to make it to someplace I plan on being or not.

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

My newest one is ''It can sit on my shelf as easy as it sits on theirs.'' I heard my DH echo it the other day. Used to convince him to buy before he needs it.

mid central, FL(Zone 9a)

i just remembered my all-time favorite and i may have posted it somewhere already, but it's this: "he's all hat and no horse". it refers to a "fake" cowboy, but it applies to any "know-it-all" type person who really doesn't.

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

I love that one!

mid central, FL(Zone 9a)

it's one of the few i can remember, (old brain shutting down.......) LOL

Sand Springs, OK(Zone 7a)

argue with a fool and they will make one out of you

Pearl River, LA

MY DH always says this when the kids think they know more than him.......when you get a million miles under your belt...... we'll talk about it again.....meaning your wrong I am right.... you just have not been around long enough to know any better.... lol.... and He
IS always right.

Aurora, CO(Zone 5a)

Tracksinsand, I've heard a similar one that I like, "Big hat. No cattle." Means basically the same thing. All show and no substance.

mid central, FL(Zone 9a)

i like that one too!!!
