The November, 2006 Roundup in College Station

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

Have fun in Galveston?? OMG, don't tell me that Connie is going to that big, bad motorcycle Rally?

I'd love to have some Pride of Barbados seeds, too, if there's enough!

UniQueTreasures, could I get a snip of the Ric Rac Cactus?

Hey! Y'all have a fantastic time and DON'T TALK ABOUT ME...

Just kidding, of course. Do have a great time, and I really wish we'd booked a cruise ANY other time.

But I'll manage to bear up.

Santa Fe, TX(Zone 9b)

I will bring several hundred Pride of Barbados seeds.

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

Smockette, I don't know if Connie and James are going to the rally or not. I know they did that earlier this year, and they are taking the bike and her truck. It's just too cool to ride all the way down there right now. Yeah, I know it isn't THAT cold, but we only get REALLY cold 2-3 days a year. Considering it's been in the 80's and 90's for months, these 60's and 70's are pretty cool... especially on the back of a bike. Plus, it would be cumbersome to travel back to Beaumont carrying it on the bike, if they buy something big. :-)

It was my understanding that this was just going to be a "pleasure sight seeing/shopping" kind of trip. I've been wrong before though. She is taking her camera and will bring back some photos.

Dave, I've enjoyed your site, and the folks that visit here, so much. I'll pot up enough of the Ric Rac for a whole plant, just for you. The plant that I have is humongous! I don't know what color the blooms are because it's never bloomed for me, but I'm not giving up on it though. I saw a photo of the blooms of the Rick Rac on the Orchid Cactus Forum, and they are really pretty. I was told by the lady that I bought it from that it's a cousin to the Night Blooming Cereus. I bought the NBC the same day and that plant has given me more pleasure than just about any other plant in my yard. I will pot up some of that also for you, if you are interested.

I've just spent the entire morning potting up all kinds of things. I used 2 of the pond forms and amazed even myself at how many plants there were in there. That idea worked REALLY well! The plants stacked nicely. And.... I still have half of the truck room left. You'd never even know by looking out in the back yard that I cut anything at all. If anyone wants to check out my diary, and get me to bring something, speak now, while my hands are already dirty! HAHAHAHA

Janet

Janet,

Thank you for the kind words! I already have NBC's and I love 'em. :) I don't have a Ric Rac cactus though and am very excited to have one! Then I'll just need to be careful and bring it indoors whenever frost threatens. I've lost many NBC's over the years due to frost. :(

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

I've never brought mine inside. I just stick things into the wintering place and we cover it with tarps.... and pretty much forget about them.

My NBC was totally green when I bought it. Now it's totally pink, with the exception of new growth. Really strange. I think Hurricane Rita had something to do with that because it was green until Rita blew through here.

I'm really looking forward to meeting you and the rest of the DGer's that will be there. Some of the things I'm bringing, I haven't identified. I'm hoping that someone will be able to identify them for me while I'm there.

My gardening has improved so much since joining this forum. The knowledge of plants here is awesome! Thanks EVERYONE for letting me pick your brains about things I had no idea about.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Hey guys if you are coming down from N Central TX to CS, I just heard that I- 35 near Waco at Hwy 84 is shut down. You might want to look at a different route if you are heading that way tonight. If you are going in the morning I would think it should be cleared up, it was an 18 wheeler on fire.

Rick and I just got home. We both had so much fun visiting with folks. Dave's got the best community in the world. We decided to unload the van tomorrow. Both of us are dead dog tired. I just wanted you all to know how much we enjoyed the day.

Thanks Folks for making this one of the best birthday's I've had in a long time. I actually feel younger! :-)

I've got some photos and will upload them tomorrow. This gal's hitting the hay real soon!

Many hugs to everyone,

What a fun bunch of people. Wish I had the stamina they seem to have. And their knowledge and desire and ability to share are fantastic. Frostweed is so SMART and her memory is fantastic. Her DH is so SMART also w/his computer knowledge and his ability to put his DW's knowledge into the website. What a pair! We are so fortunate to have them as DGers. Everyone there has general knowledge and specific interests + experience which leads to knowledge you find yourself mesmerized and learning despite yourself. My DDH and I both felt as if we could do this once a week anyway. We felt so charged even tho we were both dead tired by the time we left. (and even more so by the time we arrived home) Dave should be commended for hosting Dave's Garden and thereby bringing so many interesting and informed people together - and this was just a small part of one state!! Thanks to all who came and made this such a memorable day.

Ann

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh Ann, you are so sweet to say all those good things!!!
We are all very fortunate to be part of Dave's Garden indeed.
This website has given us gardeners a way to share and get to know each other.
I think that gardeners are generous people, as was very well demomstrated by all the plants and home made things that were brought to be given away.
Tinkering with the soil and seeing things grow, makes us realize what a grand design God has put in Nature, and causes us to be humble and give to others in gratitude for all we have received.
In my opinion gardening is a wonderful pursuit, and gardeners are the greatest people.
Josephine.

LOL Yep Smockette, we went to the big bad motorcycle rally in Galveston. :) My sweety is a biker and so I have to look like I belong riding on the back of one too. mmmmmmmmmm I love the smell of leather.

Mostly we did the shops on the strand (which happens to be right in the middle of the rally) and enjoyed each others company. It was mild compared to last year.

I talked to Janet this afternoon when I got home and boy she did have a blast visiting with yall! I thought about all you folks while I was in Galveston and sure would loved to have been there.

Connie

Iola, TX(Zone 8b)

Dave, I plan on wearing my davesgarden t-shirt quite often so may have to order another one real soon, do you have sweat shirts? I should probably change the look so people don't think I am wearning the same shirt.... haha!!
I just love my mug, my style for sure!!!!
