It's about 168 miles from SA to CS according to MapQuest by the shortest route through San Marcos, Bastrop, Caldwell, to CS.
The November, 2006 Roundup in College Station
Also try Google maps. I have had much better results from them.
Hmmm.....thanks, guys....that answers my question.. :) I'd love to go...
Melanie
Would love to meet you too Melanie!!
Hope you can, Melanie. We went in April, and it was so much fun. DH found all sorts of people to visit with and came home with a wicked agave. He's the "dangerous" gardener -- plants that will stick, spear, or otherwise harm you.
lolol patrob...does he have a Spanish Dagger? Gawd...I love the two that I have...but dadnab it...I've been poked so many times, it tisn't funny...lol And because of the way that the daggers are around the trunk..you really can't see the blades when you're face level and looking straight at it...I've almost poked my eye out a few times..lol.. I love agaves myself...and have about 5 different kinds. They grow wild all around us as well... :) I think GD is bringing me a wild one at our SA roundup... :)
I'd love to meet ya'll too....and all of the other folks whose names I've become familiar with these past 2 or so months.. :)
Melanie
You can see the pics from the last one in April, at the top of the Texas Gardening Forum, under DG Events. There are a lot of pics posted there, some quite amusing.
I've peeked thru those photos a few times...it looks as tho it was alot of fun, lol...!
Does it move from city to city each year? Sorry, I didn't catch where the last one took place...... I've been dropping hints to my honey all morning about attending in CS, lol. Tough when your other half has NO interest a'tall in gardening, lol... :p
Does he like to eat?
lol..does he like to eat? err...well...I reckon he does...esp BBQ... :D
The one in April was the first for a "Statewide" as I understand it. The reason it was there was that Dave himself of Dave's Garden hosted it. He lives around CS. Did you recognize him and Trish in the pictures? He had furnished one meal for everyone and there was food brought by everyone for snacks, desserts, etc. I hope to be at the next one too.
Sheila_FW
ohh...I couldn't figure out why trois was askin' about food and my honey...lol Well that makes sense... :D
Yes, I recognized them...Sheila. Sure would love to attend..dadburn it... :)
I've been wondering where you guys were ... how did I miss this thread?
Sylvia, you posted back a ways on this thread, maybe you forgot to click watch. That makes me so mad when I do that on a good thread, then can't find it.
HHMMM I sure did ... I hate it when O do that too.
I do that all the time.
Hello Texans! I'm sorry I can't be at your round-up. It's my understanding that Dave will have some of the Dave's Garden coffee mugs for sale at the round-up. I'd REALLY like to get my hands on one (or more) of these mugs as door prizes for the Iowa round-up next spring. If anyone would be willing to pick me up one or more of the mugs and ship them to me, I'd be more than happy to reimburse you for the mugs & shipping. We would really like to have these as door prizes. PLEASE, if you would be willing to do so, please send me a d-mail. Thanks a bunch! Linda
Sending you D-mail.
lol..keep your fingers crossed....I'm slowly getting my honey convinced into going to the RU...*shhh* :D
He doesn't need to worry about not knowing anyone. Most will be in the same frame of mind.
And there are a lot of guys there too, not just women. Not all are gardeners either, some are just draftees. LOL!
lol Sheila...I reckon that my honey burned his gardening draft card a long time ago...lol...but I'm slowly working on him...:)
Melanie
Melanie,
I'm just a lurker here, wishing I could attend this wonderful RU too. I just want to give your hubby some advice about attending a garden party without being interested in gardening himself.
My hubby isn't into gardening either, but he has attended several of the RU's with me. In fact, we went to the Kentucky RU several years ago and made it a nice vacation. As you can see, I live in So. Calif., so it wasn't a short trip. We had a blast, and even DH enjoyed himself just talking with all the other DH's that were there. My DH even joined in on a little show we put on.
He has gone to our SoCal RU's also, and just sits back and enjoys all the friendships that are taking place. When he sees how nice these people are, and all the new friends you have made, he will understand your love for DG.
I hope you can attend....you will have a great time. :-))

Here are some directions that might help people. I think they are pretty reasonable.
Dallas to CS: Take I-35 South toward Waco. From Waco, take Highway 6 south toward Bryan/College Station. It's about an hour and 15 minutes from Waco to College Station. It's about a 2.5 hour drive from downtown Dallas to Bryan.
San Antonio to CS: Take I-35 North toward Austin. Exit in San Marcos and turn right onto Hwy 80. After only about a mile, exit and go left on Highway 21 toward Bastrop. In Bastrop you'll have to turn left and then right to stay on 21, so do watch the signs. When 21 hits Bryan, turn right to go south on Highway 6 to College Station. I found it's a solid 3 hours from San Antonio to Bryan.
From Houston and Austin, well, I've never made the drive so somebody else should give those directions.
dave
From Houston, go west on 290. Get off on 6 NORTH (not 6 south into town) when it separates from 290. Stay on 6 until you get to College Station. From the northwest side of town, it took us just under 2 hours to get there for the spring RU. I hear Debbie can make it faster than that. LOL
There you go Melanie, the Dave himself has given you directions, you have to come now! LOL! That isn't very much longer than I drive from Fort Worth.
Several of us got rooms in the same hotel last year and went out to eat together that night. The next day we toured a nursery in the area before heading home. The covered pavillion is super for the purpose also. Close to parking, has a kitchen and restrooms, and loads of tables.
Sheila ... I just cant believe that drive to College Station is only two and a half hours long ... uh ... uh ... hmmm ... why did it take us so long? We only stopped about five or six times!
I'm really looking forward to this Nov RU, meeting up with "old" buds and meeting some new ones. Watch out, because I'll show you about 200 pics of the grandgirl!! (I don't hold out much hope that her parents will let me bring her along, lol.)
Those of you with non-gardening spouses, don't worry. They are usually surprised at how much fun they have, and how easy it is to find people to talk to who aren't quite as plant-minded as we are. (And Pat, you gave me a great idea how we can convince some of the non-plant guys to take an interest:Extreme Plants, the ones that poke and stab, etc!!)
:-)
lol Mary, but it's true. He loves his tomatoes and peppers and all those pointy plants he can find. We drove country roads yesterday gathering more agaves, ocotillo, sotols. They fill in spots in our front island bed, and the deer don't touch them. The non-flower-gardening husbands do have a good time at the RU's, and it's mostly about meeting people and visiting anyway. And food.
I can vouch for non gardening DH. Mine went in April and I was shocked as he is pretty shy. He has been really sick since then with a spinal abcess they they can't find out what is causing it. Not a week goes by that he does not say "Can't wait till Nov." Our chances don't look good for coming, Because he is so sick, but I am believing we will be there as this is the first thing in 31 years of marriage today that we have an interest in together. And it is not the plants and food, it is our DG family. We had a blast.
You can read about him in the prayer forum. This weekend he was lifeflighted to Houston, He has an IV port for antibiotics and around 3:oo am he passed out in the bathroom and it broke. He bled out a liter and a half. I called 911 and the rest is over there.
We just got home tonight after 4 days in the hospital. I don't leave, I just camp out there in the room. They couldn't pry me away if they tried.
Blessings,
Sandy ^8^
lol @ ya'll.....well, with this sort of persuasion...how can we NOT come? lol
I have to admit...my honey (fiance) is a rather shy fella as well.....and like I said, he definitely doesn't garden, although he DID help me dig a hole for a small tree once, lol. Being from Boston, I reckon that the rattlers, scorpions, cicada wasps, my spiny cactuses, giant wolf spiders and all-around San Antonio heat just sort'a keeps him standing on the back porch....except when he bbq's...lol.. I don't think he was exposed to such critters in Boston, lol
lol Sheila....well, with those wonderful directions....there is no way I'd end up in Baton Rouge or Oklahoma City!... :D
Thanks SoCal....well, come on to Texas!....we'll make ya an honorary member and citizen....lol :)
Sandy, Sorry to hear about Dennis, hope he gets a diagnosis and treatment soon. We would definately miss you and him at the RU, so we pray he gets well in plenty of time.
Sandy, i hope things start looking up for your family real soon. I know that when my husband or kids are sick I am much more stressed than when it is me. take care of yourself while you are taking care of him.nancy
Marylyn--that's cuz I drive real fast--and have the insurance rates to prove it. =)
We too hope, Sandy, that you and Dennis can make it to College Station. I know you both are exhausted. I'm hoping this round of antibiotics does the job. We've had a challenging summer too, but nothing like yours has been. Rest every minute that you can!
Thanks all. Yes I am exhausted. I deserve (we) deserve a trip to visit all of our wonderful family members from DG in CS in Nov.
You know it is a great time to think of picking up door prizes to donate as we have plenty of time and if we run across something
maybe on clearance for gardening since it is that time of year it may save us some money. Walgreens, Target and CVS have their Summer stuff marked down. :o).
I got one last time. I picked the silly string for DDGs. Remember ilovejesushedgehog? hehehehe It was so much fun.
Sandy...so sorry to hear about your husband. I'm glad you are home now, and I do hope you are both able to make it in November.
:) Kim
Well, it seems that I will be there with a newby this time. Got it marked and will see ya'll there.
Hey Kip!
where have you been? WeI havent seen or heard from you since CS? Are you the kind that just shows up for the good times? LOL
SANDY
I am so sorry to hear about Dennis ... bless his heart ... he is still looking foreward to CS. I will be praying for yall!
Sylvia/Dallas
Has a hotel been named for the DG gatherers? I am not sure that I will be staying over night, but I am considering bringing my DH and thought it might be nice to stay over the weekend. I haven't looked into cost or location at all but will try to find some time to do so this weekend.
