I'd forgotten how hard this was!

I haven't pulled the sod from a new bed in ages and I am working on a new perennial "island" for the corner of my yard. Of course I had to do this the hard way and pull all the grass out instead of layering it with newspaper or something :)

Spent over 5 hours today on this and I am only half done. Tired and sunburned, but what a workout!

Another view. You can see the size of the bed here. Oh, and DH decided that we didn't need to get a sod cutter because it wasn't worth it. To him, maybe, since he's not doing any of the work! :P

Looks great! I feel your pain! lol .. next time get a long bread knife, slice under the grass and take 2 asprin before you start .. works wonders.

Ugh! That was me this time last year, sister! Keep on keeping on!!

BTW, you probably know this, but if you water it well a little over a day before you're going to rip it out, it will come up easier but won't be excessively heavy from moisture :)

I totally sympathize! I am the Sod Ripping Queen of our neighborhood. Less grass, more garden! Ouch. My DH always manages to be otherwise occupied when I'm tearing up the lawn...although he does almost all the fixup stuff around the house and builds my hardscape, so I really shouldn't complain. :)

Two ibuprofen and a hot shower work wonders for me...preferably followed by a long nap. :)

Wow, you have really thick grass and a very large area to clear! I don't think I could tackle a bed that big anymore.

I did work on what I call my ''half moon'' bed. Right now it's a sliver, eventually, it will be half. For a new bed,a sharp spade and string are my two companions. I save the sod for transplanting elsewhere, so I take managable squares. I prefer to have it dry. The spade cuts thru easier. I have to haul it all to the garden till I need it. I'm needing it less as I have more beds than thinning grass.
