I did work on what I call my ''half moon'' bed. Right now it's a sliver, eventually, it will be half. For a new bed,a sharp spade and string are my two companions. I save the sod for transplanting elsewhere, so I take managable squares. I prefer to have it dry. The spade cuts thru easier. I have to haul it all to the garden till I need it. I'm needing it less as I have more beds than thinning grass.
