My day is done and so am I!

This is me with vertigo, attempting to walk the plank over to the other side of the canal. Brave or a bit stupid? This is only about 1 block away from my house.

Oh, I have to walk the plank to turn the water into my little ditch to get down to my yard.
Here is one more of Jaxzen for you Kell. Walker is ny 2nd grandson, Jaxzen's older brother, he is pushing the truck.

The last one is of my tiny vegetable garden being flood irrigated. Thanks for letting me share. (As if you could have stopped me). HAHA

MyRee, that is some irrigation system you have channeled for yourself. I've never seen anything quite like this except for a few large farms, and only $25.00 for the year is so inexpensive. With all that water, it is little wonder your plants look like they are about to jump out of the ground.

Tussee

Brigham City, UT(Zone 5b)

Thanks Tussee
I love it, It reminds me of the farm, we had about 28 hours of irrigation at a time about every 5-6 days. So we irrigated clear through the night. It also reminds me about my family and my time with my father.
Mother was also at our side when we were out working, which seemed to be clear through the summer. 8 children on the farm, 2 boys and 6 girls, the girls were known as the "Jones Girls". We worked hard, I really did not appreciate it until I got married and discovered that we learned how to work. And still we are all hard workers. Love it, Love it.
I have fun seeing where I can get the water to. This year it is working the best.
Another view of my little garden. It was planted 9 days ago, the corn and beans are coming up, I also started cantaloupe, watermelon, cucumber and tomato and peppers from seed in March. They like the garden better than their cups. Marie

What an amazing setup you have Marie! I've heard of this but have never seen one. You have a totally cool yard and such cutie, patootie grandkids!

Oh wow, I lost track again of this thread. I think I opened it one day when I was in a rush and thought I would come back later to read it and of course totally forgot. I have no mind anymore. I apologize Marie. I did so want to see your pictures. I can't believe that pic of Jax. What a real doll. I bet he gets so spoiled. LOL.

You are nuts to go over that plank with vertigo, a fall down there would really hurt not to mention get you all wet. Can't you add another board?

Those stone chairs you have in the bank there are so great. Clever!!! What a great childhood those kids are having.

What a great veggie garden. I was watering mine by hand last night and it took forever. I wish I had your flood method! You are really clever.

Will the grand kids help you in the garden? I bet they love to. Then they will have memories of your garden like you do your farm. I always thought I should be raised on a farm. I loved all the animals and always loved the dirt.

I wanted to say wow what nice looking brugs kell
And I look like that everyday i play in the garden,I am new to brugs maybe someday I will have as many as you do.Robin

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Thanks Robin. And I bet you will! Especially if you start cross pollinating. That is the fun part of growing brugs.

Premont, TX(Zone 9b)

Kell what size pots are those? And how many brugs do you have ..........that sure looks like 100's of brugs and alot of work...

Elva

Milo, ME(Zone 4a)

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I think it is very important to know what you are wanting to achieve when pollinating brug flowers. Do you want to work for color, long tendrils, and durability? If so, you need to know what brugs have those attributes that you like and then you need to use and work with only a few crosses. (It helps to know the backgrounds of the brugs you will be using too.) It isn't possible to grow out tons of crosses and I can tell you that if you send the seeds to bunches of people to grow for you, it is rare that you hear from more than a few of them. Keep good records of the crosses as you will need quite a bit of information to be able to register them if they are really special. Growing brugs from seed is rewarding and I have learned a lot and still have a lot to learn. The thing that sticks in my mind more than anything is that there are lots of brugs out there that there that have no history and never will. Just be sure to keep good records. Growing a bunch of seeds also doesn't mean that you have to keep them all after you see them bloom. I would only keep something that is special in some way and different from anything else already out there. Enjoy your brugs. I've cut back to 80 some this year and will cut back more this fall. Out of all the brugs I've grown in eight or more years, I've only registered one of my own. Two others I grew were registered by the hybridizer. I hope you have good luck and get something very nice from a cross.

san antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

Hi you guys! Dang, Kell...I just ran across this thread...do you garden barefooted? Ha...I'd be afraid of bugs or worms getting in between my toes! I wear rubber fishing boots so nothing can get my feet or up my pant legs and I can play in the mud or step into the shallow edges of the pond. Anyway, thought I'd say hello to everyone...I've gotta give Mama her tube feeding now, but it's too hot to play in the garden today, so I actually had a minute. Hope everyone's doing well!!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

WOW Meiyu!! How are you?? I haven't talked to you since Susie visited. We MISS YOU! How is your garden going? I know you must be busy taking care of your Mom. I sure hope all is well for you.

Elva, I use size 5 gallon in the ground. I have several hundred too many down there. LOL

Oh Robin making crosses is so easy and so much fun. So make like a bee and buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. I think everyone should try it. And if you like what brugs you get, you can name it after yourself or a loved one or even your dog, which is such fun too.

All you need are 2 different brugs. Just take the pollen laden anther of one and rub it on the stigma of the other. When I first did it I used my fingers and it took. I was so thrilled. I was harvesting pollen from a rarer brug for a brug friend on here, Glory, to send to her. I had no clue how and she was coaching me. When I was done I thought I will just try that myself, LOL and I did one and I must have had SUCCESS for I kept doing it. Now I use a kid's paintbrush I buy from KMart and I tag my crosses with plastic tags.

I figure bees do it so why can't I? LOL. So do not be afraid and just go for it. As soon as you get your brugs to flower start trying it. When you get a pod you will love it. And each seed will grow a different brug though some put out fairly similar looking ones.

Susie is the gal who taught me to pollinate and she made a thread that is so helpful.

Let us know how you do, Robin!!

I believe this picture I stole from here a long time ago is Jeanne's picture so I want to give her credit. I would ask her for sure but she is on a trip right now. It really helped me when I began.

Kell wish you were my neighbor! You never fail to bring a smile to my face...... Just now had time to read this thread. What a hoot! I can't believe you planted SO much. I got tired even thinking about it.

p.s. I'm always barefoot in the garden and can't wear any cute shoes in the summer. My toes aren't fit for public viewing.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh Kristi, if you were my neighbor I wouldn't even have to have a garden. I would park myself in your backyard and just enjoy it so much. It would be a true joy for me. I could babysit for you! We would have so much fun!! And I would never be like that grumpy meanie you had living next to you! Remember? After you planted such a show for them by the road.

We hould have a new contest........... an ugly foot contest. LOL. Maybe I will start one.

Milo, ME(Zone 4a)

Thank-you to brugie for all your helpful infomation
thanks kell some good tips and helpful info to get me started.I maight be a brug
pollener soon>>>>>>>>>>>>lol Robin

Brigham City, UT(Zone 5b)

Donna, Thanks. I do love my grandkids, an irrigating is fun also.

Kell, I looked at the beginning of the thread again and I still can't believe your BRUGS. It amazes me. They are so beautiful. I am afraid here in Utah I am not going to be able to have such a show. No place to put them in the winter.

I still have a bit of vertigo, mainly when I bend over then stand up without thinking - then I spin a bit. (I hold onto the branches above when I walk the plank). At night when I turn the irrigation off, I keep looking over my shoulder, afraid that someone will come up behind me and push me in. (Just my phobia).

The grandkids do love the yard. There are many places to run and play on my little 1/3 of an acre. I need to make a couple of bridges over my ditch gates, I am hoping to get that done this month before going back to work.

I have had a couple of 12 year old neighbor boys helping me move rock and level the area just south of my house. It got very unruly with weeds and 'bind weed', Oh how I hate that weed. I am going to put black plastic down then bark. My pots of brugs and other annual pots will go on the bark. I hope it works well. I have 5 rose bushes in that area that I have run underground hoses from irrigation to to irrigate them, I will have to water the pots with the hose.

Walker helps me pot the plants, he is Jaxzen's older brother and the only one interested in helping at this time. Jaxzen at almost 4 years old is just interested in playing.

Thanks for your sweetness and interest. I do appreciate it. (I feel like I butted into your thread). I am still new at this and trying to figure things out. I do enjoy seeing pictures so I post mine thinking others will enjoy them also. Thanks and don't work toooooo hard.
(Dirty feet are happy feet). Marie

Oh Robin, I will be watching for pictures from you when you get some flowers. I know you will have a pod soon! And then the fun begins.

Marie, your little yellow brug is looking great! You might want to dig your pots in a bit to make it easier to keep watered. In pots won't you have to hand water or will the irrigation go over their pot tops?

I am late gettng my garden together this year but I hope to have a good show in about a month.

You can always post all the pics you want on my threads Marie, I love to see them. Everyone's input in whatever direction always makes life more interesting. And your pictures sure did. Thanks!

I need some helpers also. But I have no grandkids yet and my boy is not into helping at all when he is home. Shucks! LOL

Brigham City, UT(Zone 5b)

Hi Kell
It has been a couple of late evenings in the garden, trying to get the south side of my house looking better.

I do water my pots by hand, when I have irrigation I often scoop a bucket of water and water that way, so they get a good soaking twice a week and an occasional watering from the hose. The plants are really responding to the fertilizer, growing like weeds.

You may look up the Boy Scouts of America, they can get gardening merit badges and in the process help you with the garden. I have enjoyed having a couple of 12 year old boys come and help me. I pay them and that helps fund their trip to scout camp. And in the process they learn. I try to make it enjoyable and informative. We have had a lot of fun.
I have found that they tire easily tough, We only work for 1-2 hours at a time. (I send them home and continue). The older boys have a bit more energy. I hope to have these two helping me for a few years.

We are leaving tomorrow morning to visit our son, DIL, and 3 grandsons, (I AM SO EXCITED - lots of hugs) will be gone for 3 days, I have instructed my daughter on irrigation and watering the flower pots.

I have a sweet friend I met about 5 years that has a real 'yard sale', she has a greenhouse and sells wonderful periennials from her home, there are pots everywhere. I visited her yesterday, just couldn't resist, more planting coming up. My sweetheart just cringes when I say I am going to see Nedra, he knows what is coming, more plants and less money.

Well, enjoy the day. Marie

Since I don't have any brugs yet I post pictures of what I have.
This picture reminds me of the 4th of July

Oh Marie.. that is a beautiful picture!! WOW. Have fun visiting your family!

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Beautiful 4th of July pic, Marie. Have a great visit.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh WOW Ada, you are so right. Marie, a perfect 4th of July pic. Looking so pretty! Have a great cvisit with you rdaughter and family. What a clever idea to use the boy scouts too! THANKS

I think most of our spouses are amazed at our capacity to spend money on plants. I just can't stop.

Brigham City, UT(Zone 5b)

Thanks Ada, Shelly and Kell, I'm sure we will have a blast with the kids.

It has been raining so I don't have to be worried about the yard while I am gone either.

Kell, staying up a bit late huh?

I like this picture, looking up towards the sky.

That is my picture of Ernie taken years ago. Poppysue borrowed it and put the parts of the flower on it.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Sorry Jeanne, I just meant that the one with the parts was Sue's.

No problem Shirley, just clarifying that I took the picture. That's one of the first brugs I owned, it grew about 12 feet before it flowered. That's the one that I took to Liz at the airport when I first met her, the piece was 5 feet long I think. So long ago and so many brugs later.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh Marie, your daisies make me smile too! I am all grins.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Our tastes have sure changed, haven't they. Not that it wasn't a pretty one. I remember when we all wanted long tendrils, dark pinks, and then double pinks. Now I want triples and quads in every color. My DH would just as soon I quit growing plants altogether. I'm afraid he won't win this one.

Brigham City, UT(Zone 5b)

Hello All,

I am home and finally feeling a bit better, got sickly Saturday and just became worse 'til yesterday, I am feeling much better today.

Visiting with family, grandkids was a very nice break from everyday life - even I wasn't at my best. Three boys are a handful but so fun.

I irrigated this morning, when I was about done the thunder came and hail pounded down. The hail was only 1/4" so all it did was put holes in the largest leaves. I was thankful it wasn't worse. I took a picture but haven't downloaded yet.

Then - I took my FIL to the hospital for gall-bladder surgery, He did fine but will stay overnight. Just got home, relaxing.

This is a picture of 4 on my grandsons from 3 of my children. Cute little brugs huh?

Marie, your boys are precious, and look full of energy as they should.

Tussee, Thanks, they are full of energy. And very fun to be grandma to.

This is a picture I have been looking for, This is Chad (with a mosquito bite to his eye), just 1 month older than Jaxzen.

I guess they are my flowers. Marie

Darn, I am going to have to find the time to keep up with my internet stuff! It's so hard just trying to read everything I missed (so I usually don't get to read it all)! I just realized that if I just set aside an hour a day, maybe I could keep from getting so overwhelmed with catching up...heh. Yeah, I've been kind of overwhelmed with mom and other home-stuff, Kell, but I think it's about to settle down. As soon as I get done with the 12 yds of mulching I've got to do, I'll send a picture of the gardens. I neglected it for a year, but now that I don't have to puree 3 meals a day or worry about mom falling down (she's tube-feeding and can't walk anymore), I'm working hard to get it back into shape. It's looking good, except for all the plants that have stressed out from me moving them around (I don't have any grass left in the back...it's all garden now, so I've been rearranging all my plants to spread them out better). I've killed a few things, but one of my brugs came back after being dead since winter before this last one...isn't that wild? Don't know which one it was, but I think it was HG...I guess I'll know soon, but I was just put away by that! Oh, I forgot that I had to click to watch my threads, too...it's like being a newbie all over again......by the way, what cute, cute, cute kids in these pics!!!!

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Those are my feet! I'm so happy to know that I'm not the only one. Somewhere, on one of the posts there was a discussion about soap under your fingernails to keep them clean, or the dirt comes out easily...whatever...and I was far too embarassed to say that I wasn't worried about my fingernails, it's my toenails I have a problem with. I live in sandals at the dressiest of times and at home and garden, it's flip-flops. With the tiller, with the weed-eater, with an axe..do I worry about cutting all my little toesies off? No, hate to wear shoes, let alone some big heavy boots. So, yes, going somewhere (even to the store requires some serious work to be able to present my feet) I have a long black throw-on kinda dress, skims the ground, that plus my black flip-flops lets me fool myself that they can't see my feet when I have to run to the store for "just a loaf of bread" I try to orchestrate my trips so that I'm not *constantly* scrubbing away with a pumice stone. At least in winter I can put a pair of socks over my unpresentable feet and slip into my berkies. I'm thinking also that I'm gonna have to wear socks in the garden...somehow.

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Bumpin Kell as I was just braggin about your garden shoes in the (what else?) begonia forum!!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Hey Lali girl. Brag about my hot feet. My feet are my best asset. LOL

Those are the cutest little muddy piggies Ive ever seen!
