Spring Bulbs - Pictures and Discussion - Part VIII

Denver, CO

Have a loko at this neat study on winter-annual cultivar performance. Excellent information if you like pansies...

I hope the link works...

Columbia Heights, MN(Zone 4a)

Nope, didn't work, but the Panola Fire is very pretty and I might try that one. It even looks like it might be hardy here. Still, it's not the Delta Red....sigh.

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

No, it's not illegal to dig it here, unless it's in a public park. I've yet to find any in the woods, though, and I traipse through them regularly, while geocaching. I take that back, I did find a small one last year, and dug it up, but it didn't live a week. :-(

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Kylee, I have plenty of Jack in the Pulpit and would be happy to share. They're one of the wildlings I've just left where they are when putting in garden areas, and now they're seeding like mad. I have them showing up in all sorts of places I don't really want them.
Neal

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

I have some spreading here, too. But they are in good places. They're gonna love our 2 weeks of rain! Just curious how you will ship them, Neal.

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

Oh Neal, I will happily receive all you want to send!!!!! THANK YOU!!! Just d-mail me what you need me to do! I'll pay shipping of course!

They go dormant if it dries, but will remain leafy all summer if not. They are a simple corm with a funnny shape- round with a cone on top. It is my opinion that they, being fairly susceptable to shock, are best planted/dug in late summer/fall, as I think they need to be in the ground in early spring to root.
I have a virused Dracunculus opening today, I hope to get home from work soon enough tot get a picture- and a sniff!

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Breaker_ch. I just checked and if you go to HARRIS SEED then to PROFESSIONAL then to FLOWER SEED then to PANSY then click on LARGE FLOWER you will be there. They list about 20 different Delta. It is there I promise. Patti

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

I can wait until fall, but how on earth would you find them then?

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Kylee, I'll just keep an eye open as they start drying later this summer and dig them then for you. I've read that handling the bulbs can cause skin irritation, and my hands have been itchy after handling them. Gloves may be a good idea when you plant them.

I'll keep you posted on how they progress.
Neal

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

Thanks so much, Neal. I'm excited about this. My mom dug two from a woods near her and she said that was all that were there. She even went back to try and find some for me, but no luck. :-( I really appreciate you sharing some!

wallaby1 I looked up Monte Carlo double tulip, but I think it appears very bright. The one I have seems more like what I see when I looked up the paler double Boule d'or Tulip. I just ordered the latter for next year and I will compare them if I get a repeat on the one now in bloom. Patti

I see what you mean Patti, although the catalogue pics of Monte Carlo are not true to colour. The shape isn't perhaps quite right, but mine is a bright yellow and yours looks paler. Monte Carlo has a powerful honey/honeycomb scent.

Wallaby1 We are having a wicked wind and rainstorm now, but tomorrow I will give it the nose test and let you know. If it isn't floriforous, I will be ordering some Monte Carlo. I have a love of honeycomb fragrance. Thanks, Patti

Sounds like nasty weather your way Patti!

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Oh it is nasty here too, after some hot days it has been 50F for two days, damp and drizzly. Next 10 days no sun forecast until day 10, rain every day, temps not much above 60.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5a)

JamesCO, Check this out for the info you've requested.

Columbia Heights, MN(Zone 4a)

OK, Patti, I went to Harris Seeds and did find it. How do you propose obtaining it without being a "professional". I took the link to checkout to see what they required and they do want a growers number of some sort. Maybe just e-mail them and ask how the common folk could obtain seed.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

beaker_ch. If they won't send it to me. I am going to request one of my regular haunts (Moors End Farm or Newfane Nursery) to order it for me. I 'll pay for it and give them some and I'll share the rest of wealth with a couple of obsessed people like you and a few others on this thread. I'll keep you appraised of my progress. Patti

somewhere, PA

Err ahem.. another obsessed soul here ... I LOVE red. I LOVE pansies.

tam

Columbia Heights, MN(Zone 4a)

I'd certainly be willing to help pay for them.

Wow! I better check them out!

Denver, CO

Thanks Asunee. I think a local garden center had it last year.
Hmm. Pictures are slowing down a bit.

Myrtle Beach, SC

I love (!!) red too, especially pansies. I would be thrilled to pay postage, handling, packaging and any other fees involved. If I am too late, it's not a problem :)) God bless, Margo

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I have put in a seed order for the elusive Delta Pure Red through my local nursery. If it comes later this summer I'll be sending a pinch to the other obsessed people on this thread. That would be by my count, JamesCo ( he started the search),Tammy,Vossner,Tabasco, Boojum, Beaker_ch and Jlmmkm. Did I miss someone. Or if you don't want them, let me know. This will be my treat. If your mailing address is not listed, please d-mail it to me. Patti

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

Patti, yipee! thanks. my addy in exchange is current.

somewhere, PA

Oh thank you so much!!! I'm psyched.

My iris are just glorious right now but I don't know how to download the
pictures off my DH's camera and he's out of town for a week. Sorry.

sigh.....we'll wait......

Columbia Heights, MN(Zone 4a)

I'm in the address exchange. Do you think these could be winter sowed?

Myrtle Beach, SC

TY TY TY :)) I am in ther exchange also. God bless, Margo

Denver, CO

You're so kind, Patti!

It drives me nuts to not be able to collect seed. What brilliant hybridizer is responsible for such a seed-collector's nightmare of sterile plants!?

The oxalis are blooming wildly. Who wants some rhizomes? They have been hardy in places that are not even microcliamtes for me, sun or shade.

Here is a mild chlorosis appearing on some of my lilies. Ideas as to what kind are extremely welcome.

Now this is a microclimate by all means.

One of the last Bletilla flowers is about to open. The color is best now.
