Spring Bulbs - Pictures and Discussion - Part VIII

Myrtle Beach, SC

Ohhh Neal...sounds wonderful. I can't wait to see your pictures Yes, it feels good to see Spring coming up all over. Most of my Amarylis are Winter hardy. A few were planted right after they were force bloomed for the Holidays, but most were planted late last Fall. I bought several from B & B's sale. It was too late to force them all for Christmas so I planted them. The reds along the fence have flowers wider than my hand and such a vivid intense red. The camera does not do it justice.
Kylee, they're yours. Please feel free to remind me later in the year. I'm not that old, but I could forget, lol.
Looking forward to more pictures :) God bless, Margo

I think they used those Eremerus "bulbs" in about 50% of the old monster movies. They
look like giant spiders to me. But they sure are pretty in bloom! Can't wait to see the pic's.

Very true Tammy, lol. I had a bit of fun before planting mine, hehehe. I tossed one onto a friend's lap. The reaction was worth it, lol.

Not exactly a bulb, but here is a spring bloomer that I scored at the Iowa RU.

Too cool !! Very neat plant. I wanted to try my luck with those. We bought a few bulbs / tubers from a couple places of 2 or 3 different ones. Hoping to see something special very soon :) God bless, Margo

Found these at Biltmore Estates last weekend.

I guess I like bright colors ! Some of the May 5th collection of tulips out. Patti

Moby, Who cares if it's "not exactly a bulb". That's a honey, darn good pic of it, too!
Have you submitted it to PlantFiles, yet?

Margo, Do you know what those little bells are called? Pretty

Patti, what a nice collage.

I've been playing with the Macro again, this Tulip was calling for a close-up. LOL

Moby, green eyes here!

Andy I can almost feel the texture! Brush strokes extraordinaire!

Patti, there is something about tulips that reds, oranges and yellows suit, your double yellow looks a little like Monte Carlo. Lovely!

Margo, your plants look like Spanish Bluebells, the most commonly sold scilla here

http://www.theplantexpert.com/springbulbs/Scilla1.html

I have some pre-existing ones around the trunk of my H chestnut, blue and some white. I also planted some at the top edge of my bank a mix with pink, they look lovely but beware, if not dead headed ( as I neglected to do last year) they will seed everywhere.

Wallaby, How big is your yard? It seems you have a bit of everything.
I like the pic of the white ones,

Andy we have 1/3 of an acre, including the house and drive which is quite long. Actually I'm a magician and have a magic hat........

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

I have a third acre too but no magic hat, LOL

Denver, CO

But Moby, it is a bulb!
(A Corm is; in the broader sense of "bulb," being any lithophyte...)

Patti, who is the fringed Tulip? It is to die for.

Wallaby, did you know that you have a lot of Convallaria? The same magic as used by Mary Poppins for her hat.

I have this stong feeling that I will not be able to contribute much to this wonderful thread until late summer things come about. I could be wrong. However, the thread could be a grand resource to fix that problem!

Iris and Eremurus and Camassia and Ornithogalum follow the heels of late tulips and Narc. What bulbs after the abovementioned? Is it not some time before Crocosmias, Cannas, Warm-seaon Aroids, Dahlias, et cetera kick in?
Truly, what?

Hey... lilies are still to come!

I've ordered spanish bluebells as hyacynthoides hispanica and non-scripta. And
sadly, mine don't self seed. I think they are lovely.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Tammy, where did you get the H. non-scripta? Seems like everytime I decide I need something and lots of it, the price goes up, LOL. I'd like 50-100 of them, but you know I'm Mr.Cheap.

won't be long til we start the Summer Bulbs threads. My cannas are up, no more than 1 ft tall, elephant ears in various stages, (nancyana is not showing at all), my dahlias have buds and other various in various stages of peeking out. some glads have been blooming and some are about to.

Remember my cala green goddess that starting blooming in Jan?, it's still blooming! I love this plant

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Kenton, I bought it in late Nov at the Newfane Greenhouse in Vt, but I didn't write any of the names down. It was pre- DG days for me. I will check with them next week. I have been inspired by this thread to order more bulbs for fall planting. My back already feels the pain as does my pocket book. Patti

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Hey Patti,
I bought a bunch of plants at the Newfane Greenhouse last summer. We sure do move in the same circles!

somewhere, PA

Neal - I got 100 hyacinthoides non-scripta for $27.50 in 2003 from Van Engelen.

This really must be my last Tulip.
It's been raining for 2 days, I didn't use the spray bottle on this one, LOL.

Very pretty, Andy. great shot, too !!! Such a cheerful and happy color....I love dark oranges and reds !! God bless, Margo

Is anyone else salivating madly?

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Kenton suck a lemon! Turn those drool channels off. I HAVE to pull my horns in, the devil gave them to me and they have to go! I scared myself yesterday when I got all my seeds out still to sow, we lost 6 weeks of the season and in that extended cold hovel I warmed myself up with MORE acquisitions, so that makes double the trouble!

Yes I do have a lot of Convallaria, they grew through from the neighbours fence and I transplanted a single row around 7 years ago, they are moving rapidly now into forbidden territory, let the fittest win! I think the Anenome n. Robinsoniana buried by now next to the path is fine to a point, but flowering less. At the other end they are romping through my Tricyrtis, I may have to put a barrier in! It's a fight at the top edge with the Scilla. And the neighbour can't grow them! She has everything invasive, grrrrrrrrrrrrr, can you tell I'm crumbling under the strain of it all....but they do smell gorgeous if you get down and bury your head in them, and last year were green all summer so I didn't have to fill the gaps.

Mary Poppins hat? Did it have lots of flowers on it? I could do with the umbrella to whisk me away into a land of 'everything perfect and easy'! Where I have cleaned up weeds, there are more weeds, get me outa here..........

This I did buy as Narcissus poeticus, planted in autumn 2003 and first time flowered, I don't remember if there was 'recurvus' on the label, but they are suppose to be the latest to flower in May, taken 2 days ago.

Jamesco, I want to find a bunch of senile Delta pure red for next spring and I will be ordering Flaming Parrot for a subtle spot in my tranquil spring garden. NOT. I also saw a pic from gemini-sage called Toronto which though a little tame for my spring taste, is a definite want. Critterologist has one called Little Beauty, which I want to plant with a mess of scilla and with my pink fringed "what ever they are call" Can't wait for the next onslaught of summer bulbs. Patti

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

Wallaby, did you catch the fragrance of that Narcissus? Wonderful

Still raining here, another 'last' Tulip.

Patti, do tell is ever you find a seed source for that Viola.

I think I might have to take back the reasoning for the gilding on the flowers- Perhaps not age. Here are the two spots I have of it as of two and a half minutes ago.

With all of that rain, Andy, I hope you have some Zephryanthes.

I Mailed B&B about an oddly colored Dracunculus I have, an Becky Mailed back to say that it is, as I suspected, a virus. Here is the bud on the plant, in front of a non-virused Dracunculus. I will make a giant putrid cutflower out of it and destroy the plant soon.

Zant. 'Treasure' should be nice this year. The Z. 'Flame' that were left in the ground last year are just coming up now.

K, I adore the red pansies. just luv 'em

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Kenton, Harris seed has 250 seed for about 10 dollars in their professional line of the delta pure red. they seem to have the whole series. I think I will be very bright next spring. If i get them, I'll send you a pinch. Patti

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

I SO want some Jack-in-the-Pulpits!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Denver, CO

Nice one, Andy. Have you caught the Z. candida strain?
Thanks, Patti! I I'm thinking of a flat of them under lights this September...
Kylee, you are in the neck of the woods to find some, just find someone who owns propery with a nice colony on it. That isn't illegal, I hope?

Columbia Heights, MN(Zone 4a)

Patti, I think eveyone who has seen Kenton's Delta Red Pansies would like to obtain seed. I've been looking for this plant/seed everywhere without success. I just checked out Harris Seed and I can't find the Delta series on their website. Are you sure it was Harris? I checked both the professional and home gardener pages.
