We've eaten 'Branola bread for almost 30 years....Entenman's got bought out by Bimbo and they're apparently still making all of the same breads EXCEPT Branola, it's really upsetting trying all of these different breads to try to find one comparable and they're yucky. And....this dates me, but in '58, '59, 60 ('round in there) I used a lipstick called Milk Maid, only came in one color, pale pink but it had the most wonderful scent...why can't they just leave things alone?!

Sherry,

I'm with you!!!! I can't even get namebrand items at my store. They won't sell Quakers bagged cereals and I prefer their mini wheats to Kellogs. Kellogs sogs up faster in milk and they are real skimpy on icing. Quakers were more uniform in icing and crunchier. Asked Quaker about it....they said due to lack of shelf space they cannot require a store to carry their product. PHOOEY!

I remember as a child, going to the Woolworth's store when we went to 'town' and being able to buy a small bottle of Blue Waltz perfume..I always loved that scent.

Its $6.00 a bottle now at the Vermont Country Store....(sigh)

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Hi all,
Aimee, I've never tried Quakers mini wheats to know that they're better...I usually just grab one of the other two brands and hadn't really stopped to compare...now I'll have to look for Quaker's! I was very surprised when I asked at one of my local stores about getting more of a certain item, I just assumed that the store ordered what it wanted.....dumb, I guess. I just never really thought about it. Store said they just got whatever the vendor supplied and the vendor decided what was selling and what was not. I explained nicely to her that that may be true, but we have 2 stores in town and I prefer this one....HOWEVER, store number 2 sells a certain product that I buy and if I have to go there all the time just to get that one item I may have to start doing all my shopping there. She said they'd make sure to request it for me.....never hurts to ask. Doesn't the world know that we have enough to deal with everyday besides trying to find replacements for their products?! In a perfect world........

Earthling, I have a full heart-shaped bottle of Blue Waltz Sachet. It came in a box as a gift when I was a child. ( I am 73 ). I thought I still had some of the perfume, too, but haven't located it. I didn't know it was even available anymore.

Rowlett, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, the Blue Waltz is available if one is willing to pay the price....

Lucky you to still have that sachet as a memory, I always thought it was perfect for a young girl...

Sherry,

Oh PLEASE try the Quaker mini-wheats version. I think it is sooo awesome! Bought the Kellogs again just to try and it reaffirmed my disappointment just in that version. Phooey.

We have some Albertson's in Texas but NONE in SA, the locally owned huge chain HEB put them out of business. Many complain Albertson's is more pricey but I used to shop there, great sales. They always had a customer card at checkout (no postage due) and you could REQUEST a specific product and they would either get it or tell you why they can't sell it. So nice.

Earthling reminded me that when I was a kid my mom had a perfume that came in a deep blue bottle, and I cannot remember the name of it. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? I'll probably think of it as soon as I turn off the computer.

The last time I bought a Mars bar, it had little pieces of almonds on top of it. I remember the old days when they put whole almonds on top. I don't like the new one and haven't bought it again.

All this talk of perfumes past reminds me of an AWESOME purfume bottle my mother gave me as a girl to play with for Barbies, it was just the right size. It was an old bottle from when she was little that is cream and glass and shaped like a Barbie sized Grandfather clock! It even had a gold colored dial sticker for the clock face. You can unscrew the gold spiral cap on top and still get a whiff of this old scent. They sure don't make things neat like they used to do they? BTW, I still have the bottle and my daughter will get to enjoy it as well. =)

nap, was it Evening in Paris?..I remember my mother having that perfume...

Yes! I'm sure that was it! Now I can sleep tonight, thank you, earthling.

(I'm editing this post because I went to bed thinking about Evening in Paradise. It's close, but it's wrong. It was Evening in Paris. Agree?)

Well, look at that. Two great minds thinking along the same channel!

Here is a link to Vermont Country Store and hopefully the Evening in Paris page. There are lots of old time candies, lotions and perfumes at the store. You can get lost for hours there and leave a good portion of your wallet too!

We love to go there when we travel to VT. It is a beautiful ride up into the mountains.

Would LOVE to get some, but can't afford it. I can only reminisce.......

Well, "Le De" by Givanchy, I'm on waiting list in France if they make more.
Chewable Osteo Bi Flex, cured bad thumb joint several years ago. Now I take the HUGE, NASTY Osteo Bi Flex tablets and try to speed swallow to not taste them.
Bali cotton bras. Almost anytime I find a really good bra that doesn't hurt they discontinue it. I do heavy construction, so I really love cotton there.
That's my start.

WUVIE - that 7 in one candy bar isn't available now? Hmmm....When my sister and I had to wait in the car for my Mom while she got groceries, we'd buy one of those and split it....

I miss the side vent windows that old cars had for the front seat.
I miss bench seats in cars.

Olympia, WA

What scares me is that it has been such a long time that I can't even remember the things I loved ........holy ned. Long conversations w/ same vintage friend have us agreeing that so many things don't taste the same .....liverwurst, for instance. Liverwurst on soft white Wonder Bread w/ Best Foods Mayo - life was good. Now the liverwurst isn't as remembered, and even BFM seems somehow "different". Maybe our taste buds are weathering away! She still buys Wonder Bread - though it is joining the dinosaurs this year. Me? I have learned that there are many other better choices!!!!

Cream soda and grape soda were absolutely at the top of the list, and I used to dream of having a soda dispenser in the house. Today? I drink NO carbonated beverages, at ALL.

I used to plant the wooden popsicle sticks - just in case!!!!!!! I mean - dreams don't cost much, do they?? LOL

Show a teenage person a picture of a typewriter - and prepare to answer many questions .........and prepare to feel much much older. Ditto rotary dial phone! Hey - that rotary phone was modern! I grew up w/ the wooden box and crank dial on the side!!!!!

Sour apple gum, sour grape gum, sputnik gum, and there was a candy bar that I've tried to remember the name of for years, was kinda like Polar Bear, but I don't think that was it, was white sort of divinity. Small town, my cousin and I were always sent to the grocery store for my grandmother and of course, it was always "put on her account" and we were allowed to get a certain amount of reward candy. I think I want to go live in Mayberry.

Could it have been a Zero bar?

About a hundred years ago, my parents took over the local grocery store (only one in town)..best treat on a hot summer day was a frozen Zero candy bar that Dad kept in the freezer...

Kris

Denver, CO

I still find Zero bars occasionally in the checkout line at Walmart of all places!

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Sidney,
Rock on for the construction! Me to...but my position is pretty easy on me.

I can find Zero bars occasionally as well.

Rowlett, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, I have found them too, but I never think of buying some and freezing them...funny since that used to be such a treat. I would probably break out all my teeth now if I tried chewing on a frozen candy bar..LOL

Compton, AR(Zone 6a)

Is there any place that sells Spud candy bars? I used to get them in Idaho.

Rowlett, TX(Zone 8a)

I did a Google search and found several sites that sell them...I do not remember ever hearing of them, tho..wonder if it was more local...

Kris

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Kris, you may be right, next time I'm at WM, I'll have to look...I never let myself look at candy bars... Marianinark...One of the women I worked with moved back to Idaho and sent us a box of Spud bars for Christmas.......but we all thought they were really pretty bad, maybe if I'd eaten them as a kid I would have fond memories...I liked SenSen after all!
Sherry

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

I had to go look up Marathon bars at Oldtimecandy.com. I couldn't remember those until I saw the Curly Wurly that has taken it's place. YUM! I loved those things!

Looking at that website made me think of Flicks candy that I always used to get at the movie theater. Hmmm...I think I might have to order from their Pack-a-Bag page. ;o)

Pioneer, CA

nap--- was it Midnight in Paris?? I think that was the name, my Mom used that too.
I miss Danger, Ciro made it, it was so Sexy!! Oh well, that was many moons ago!

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

dguimo, it was definitely Evening in Paris, but Midnight in Paris does sound familiar too. Maybe there was a song like that. No...that was April in Paris. Oh gosh, everything sounds familiar to me now!

And Wuvie, were you the one who asked about the candy bar with seven little pockets? How well I remember! It was one of my favorites everytime I went to the movies. But I remember the name as Skybar. So I googled that and guess what? Skybar and Seven-Up seem to be the same thing.

thought you all would like to see this website...I browsed thru and it WOW what flashbacks...I was growing up in the 70's, since i was born in 71 i was a youngin to say the least but i do remember a few of these...

The one thing i miss is a shampoo called "gee your hair smells terrific" but that may have been from the early 80's...anyways loved it

Too bad there isn't such a list for those of us who grew up in the 40s/50s. For a dinosaur such as I am - this link is like something foreign. By the 70s, my kids were grown and gone - and I was solo. There probably IS an oldtimers list - I know that those which list all the things "invented" in the last 50 years are real eye openers.....because we certainly have come to take for granted many things that did not exist in our early years.

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

yes, how many miraculous changes in the world in such a relatively short time...I grew up in the 40's and 50's, I don't think we're quite dinosaurs yet...however, I didn't look at that link. I didn't think it would apply to me!

Sherry

Compton, AR(Zone 6a)

I grew up in the 30s and 40s, so maybe I 'am' a dinosaur. :-)

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Don't worry Marianinark!

Age is really all in how you look at it. If I said I've lived in 4 decades you wouldn't be able to guess how old I am but it sounds like a lot. I was born in 1979. One year later (1980) and I'd of sounded even younger!!!!

I like getting older. I learn more and have accomplished more. I'll wear my wrinkles with pride!!!

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Tir_Na_Nog,
I'm pretty sure I said the same thing when I was your age, now I'm trying to figure out which face procedure I can afford!

Sherry

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

LOL Sherry! I know there are some things I'd have done and others I'd not.

Olympia, WA

I remember my grandmother's obsession w/ facial wrinkles and the jars and jars of cold cream she had on her dresser. I was fascinated - and then promised her that I would grow up and make something that would take wrinkles away. My mother wasn't as obsessed, but she called her favorite facial lotion "Liar's Cream". Me? Ha! I do wash my face - but I don't even bother w/ makeup anymore. My grandmother and mother would find that to be shameful behavior, I am sure!

Midway, WV

Nap, would it be Blue Waltz ? I had that way back when...

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Mary, what did the bottle look like? I think I remember that one too.

Compton, AR(Zone 6a)

Nap, it was heart-shaped, just like the Sachet. Scroll back to my post on May 24th.
