Spring Bulbs - Pictures and Discussion: Part VII

WOW! Fantabulous Photos kbaumle!!!! And I can see why you wondered about the labelling of that
last tulip. It sure is a knock out pink when a bit more mature.

Boo Hoo... my camera batteries died after my first pic today. I've got glorious iris starting to bloom.
Tomorrow is another day though...

Variegated Solomon's Seal is about to open:

My variegated Solomons Seal is so small compared to what I've read they are supposed to be. Mine are maybe 8" high, almost ready to open. This is their 2nd yr. On the other hand the green ones are a glorious 24" - I wish I could have thick stands of them everywhere. I have to take a pic of some species tulips paired with blue anemone blanda. The tulips were supposed to be white I thought but they all turned out to have a dark pink stripe on the outside of each petal. The interiors are white. I planted it for my DH who informed me it looked like a grave. So much for pleasing the masses of hoi polloi out there.

Now I get it! I always forget to look at PlantFiles first and go to Google images - and then get directed back to a link at PF. NOw PF will stick in my mind, Thanks Kenton

Alyrics,
Wait a few more years. Your Variegated Solomon's Seal will grow bigger. I waited a long time before I started to see mine multiply and grow taller. I had given it up for loss, but these past couple years they just sent up several new shoots. I don't like the fact that slugs love them as much as they do Hostas!

Ooooh! I love gaudy tulips! 'Monsella' is fabulous! And the Solomon's Seal.......I have some of the regular non-variegated, as well as False Solomon's Seal. My regular SS is sending shoots out all over the place and I just planted it last year. It must like where I have it! (North side of building, under a serviceberry._

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

wow. I did not know var. SS had flowers. Mine don't like the TX heat much, but they do come back reliably. planted inground, mostly shade. It may be that with a little more water they would stick around longer in the summertime.

great pictures, guys.

vossner I have read that solomon's seal like dry shade. I have had one for a few years in the bed under the tree with hellebores, last year it had grown quite well but it takes time.

Kenton, what a tulip, no name? My red one seems to have got a huge cup but hasn't opened out.

Wow Pitimpinai! Monsella is a Spanish dancing lady, a Flamenco!

kb, Dierdre deserves a better name, I love green, that is really unusual!

I grew a pack of pasque flower seeds in 1998, got 9 plants which I grow on my north facing bank,. they like to be planted out when young so their roots can develop. I have all colours, white, ruby, purple, and a pinkish one which is getting a little deeper. I took some seed form the purple and red, had loads but only a few survived and I planted them out in my other beds. they are all red and the occasional white. They are growing well and starting to get some size on them.

I took this of a red recently, not quite as dark as the original which has been dug up by moles but is still doing OK. I also have some self sets on the bank.

I wouldn't grow Pulsatilla under hostas, mine get bigger as the season progresses, the foliage is lovely. They don't die back until the cold weather sets in.

I took a pic of the pinkish purple one but it was slug eaten, the whole plant has burst into flower so will get a pic.

this is one Itook last year of a purple

Would you like to see my lathyrus vernus? I grew them from seed, a pack of 10 seeds only got 1 strong and 1 weak plant. They took a couple of years to take off, planted as small plants autumn 2002. The light pink one is now big, the weak one is a vibrant purple but is now growing nicely.

I will try to get a better picture, but here blooms 'Hollywood Star.' Perhaps, Kylee, you could try this one with 'Diedre'?

I know that two bad pictures don't add up to a good one, but you can get the idea of the white strip on the green/red interface...

'Daydream' has nice color changes, but the patch of them that bloomed when it was getting warm just evaporated without a fight. The patch that bloomed afterword was nice:

I just found some more pictures...
It was too dark and slightly breezy to not get a blurry picture of this, but here goes:

Kenton the holly is supposed to be I aquifolium Silver Queen, but it doesn't have the deep purple stems like the expensive ones I have seen locally.

I have 2 returning out of 5 tulips Esperanto. They never did have decent flowers on, nice foliage though.

Does the Ilex get enough light to get the stem color?

Not in the winter, from spring it does but they do sell different variants I am sure, some sell one with white striped green stems and I think it is argentea.

Ooooh, Kenton. Love 'Lambada' and you're right... 'Hollywood Star' would go well with my 'Dierdre.'

alyrics, I LOVE your ginger! I've been wanting some.

Tammy, I so loved seeing your fritillaria pallidiflora that I just ordered 5 of them as well as a couple other that I craved (pontica and raddeana and elwisii) Thanks for the inspiration. patti

What a beautiful collection, guys. I never knew there were so many types of Tulips.
I have nothing new to share today but by next weekend I'll be looking for an ID of a very old Narcissus. Nothing spectacular to look at, but the fragrance is heavenly.
We had an inch of rain overnight, everything is happy.
Cool temps will prolong the show, too.
All we need is some sun to open a few new tulips.

K, t. Las Flame is fabulous!

It really amazing how many varieties of blooms we can enjoy in spring. Thank you for sharing. They get me dreaming for more. LOL.

I planted 'Ballerina' for the first time last fall:

Glorious! I love that hybrid; yours is so richly dark. How would you describe the fragrance?

Wow! Glorious pic's ... I love this thread series. Its my favorite.

Our lilacs are in bloom and it smells heavenly on the farm these days!
Pic's will have to wait 'til another day - didn't get them downloaded yet
and I need some sun to get some nice shots with the blooms wide open.

...but I'm enjoying all yours.

And Patti - glad to share my fritt's. Where did you get yours?

These tulips are just wonderful! I can barely stand looking at that Lambada, I love orange. I wonder if I could grow these potted up in my garage over the winter along an outside wall? I would never get past the chipmunks and deer to get all the way to blooming with these beauties. We should all talk about doing a tulip and bulb co-op in the fall.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Janet, I love the lathyrus varieties. I've never seen anything like either of them.

Gorgeous tulips Kenton! I'm especially fond of multi-hued flowers in sunrise/sunset tones, and it looks like you are as well. The viridifloras are fantastic to.

P, 'Ballerina' is a graceful beauty!

I have some lovely parrot tulips that were a total surprise. What I ordered (and the label said) where red Darwin hybrids, I think 'Parade'. They were a steal on ebay, something like $12 for 40 bulbs. It's worked beautifully because I needed late spring color in that area, and the blooms are huge. Since I have the tulips in that bed planted in pots for mole/vole protection, I just had to bring a pot up closer to the house. The color is actually more magenta; the pics look more red.
