Coffee and...For Thursday January 26, 2006
Hi all. I am posting over here just because I think everyone has gone to bed on the other one.
I get my staples pulled tomorrow, or today depdning on how you read this. LOL
Today was better than the day before, hoping it will continue.
The bed is better than the CHAIR, but it still isn't good. My back was killing me by morning. I guess no matter what position you are in, it will hurt after awhile if you can't move out of it.
I loved the cat cartoon and sayings yesterday, I think you were talking about me.
I had a big Outing today, I went with DH to Walmart, so he could actually find what I wanted. LOL
Poor DH, he just hasn't done this stuff before. He can do everything else, and he works all the time outside, but put him in my position and he acts helpless. I do love him, even if I nag at him. It's a wonder he puts up with me.
I love my moonflower, it is just about my favorite vine, second is morning glories of curse, and this year I am going to have so many different varieties. My moonflower vine blooms at night, I wonder if the one you are thinking about isn't datura because it is also evening blooming and is a bushy plant. I have those too. Oh this makes me long for spring somemore.
Wiuth all the wqarm temperatures we are having, I have a feeling it will eventually get so cold and bad in February or March and Kill things that have tried to come up. I didn't get the winter sowing done that I wanted to do, very disappointing. I have a big plastic box full of seeds that I want to try. some of them are going to go to waste, I just know it, I hate that.
here is a pic of my moonflower, I attached it before writing this so I wouldn't pull a stunt like yesterday. LOL
I will try to write some more tomorrow or today (chuckle) and speak to everyone individually. I forget by the time I am writing and I hate to bounce back and forth. Remember the laziness problem????
Susan
=^..^=
Can you tell I am typing with all ten. Just normal typos now, ROFLOL
Morning Susan. Good to see ya. Hey, is that a twinkle in your eye? Why yeah ... I believe there's a little color comin back in your cheeks, too. LOL So glad you're getting a *little* more rest now, anyway. Maybe you can sleep in the chair a few and then in the bed. ;) As far as the DH ... they're all helpless, hon. At least he's a sweetie and is right there by your side. That lets you know he doesn't mind a little fussin. After all, bet he's done a bit, too. Well, it's late. Get some rest. Oh yeah ... that kitty cat thing *was* precious wasn't it? A friend sent that to me and I couldn't help but think of my friends here in "coffee". :)
... Elaine
Guess I am not the first one today, however, I am still up and wiede awake
must have read every thread, lol not really but it seems like it. Samson is wondering 'what is the matter am I not going to bed tonight either'?
Morning slept good last night. I had a bout with cabin fever yesterday= just had to get out of the house!! I went in to my favorite garden places (oops, I think I told you that yesterday!! lol)
Maria, I'll take a huge piece of that strudel - you know how I love sweets - just can't have them in the house as I will devour them all...I did have DH little glass of malt he had hidden in the freezer - that is a first, letting me have it - he must be wanting something!!
Today is back to the huff/puff - then maybe a trip to Wally World just to check out what they have. I should have gone yesterday as I was right by there...oh well, I got a load of gas for 2.15 - so guess I can afford to buzz around a little more than usual!
Not much more of news here and I can't remember what everyone else wrote - just got up and my brain is in a fog yet.
Hello Maria!!
Hello Sarv, I never slept last night it is making me cranky and think all kinds of not very beneficial thoughts that I think I need that 2 x 4 ti hit myself over the head for being unkind to myself but hardly ever to others, you would think I could not be that dumb at my age! I do know what you mean not being able to say no Like you, Sarv, I am always ready to help if anyone asked for it, I am always ready to give my last shirt away if I think some one needs it more then I do. Now I got this off my chest, hope no one will mind.
Hope every one will have a good and healthy day with sunshine and good thoughts, much better then mine are right now.
Good morning everyone,
The plant that I have which is sometimes called Moonflower
is Oenothera acaulis. Here's a link to the ID thread. Getting a proper ID on it was one of the reasons why I upgraded my membership to a subscription.
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/527879/
My guess is that yours are in the Ipomea family. I'd love to take M5 up on the offer for seeds, but being in Canada complicates things. It's probably best that I look for some up here.
I also had some difficulty getting to sleep, but I think it is because after a full day at the FC, I was stewing about successor. I've brought home quite a bit of work to do today as it won't get done at the FC tomorrow. I'll be there for the morning. But several of the volunteers are taking me out for lunch and I've booked an appointment to get hairs cut at 3 tomorrow (had one for next week when I'll be out of town).
DH is hanging out with grandtwins today. I told him they are welcome to come over here for awhile in the afternoon, but NOT late morning, stay for lunch and also for half of the afternoon. If they do come, maybe we'll all go out on snowshoes near the Ottawa River. Hasn't been cold enough to safely go ON the river. We have two pair of small snowshoes from when our kids were small.
DH has decided to go ahead with surgery for the prostrate cancer. With his dithering and travel, the March 15 date was all booked up, but they now have a March 1 cancellation which he's decided to take. But he was stewing about who is going to shovel the driveway (he's a bare pavement person) if it snows and didn't like it when I said "the snow will melt at the end of March anyway". I think he's finally decided to face such challenges when they happen. I can deal with ordinary snow on the DW, but my back doesn't do well with the ridgerow at the end of it.
Well, on with the day.
Ann
PS Article in the local paper this morning about how our new prime minister designate is a CAT person. I already like him better.
Maria- swat swat - ok I've used the 2x4 on you - now shape up!! I was in a funk all week - jealous that all my friends are traveling to warm places and I am stuck here in the cold. Unhappy that DH can't find a decent job. Green because I am the only one in our group of 8 that doesn't have a new house. Guilty that I am being selfish and not helping my brother out. And on and on and on Isn't that all terribly silly!! I have good health, many friends, and a good life. Now I've swatted myself with the 2x4!!!! Sun is shining...today will be good..
Take Samson out for a long walk- you'll feel better!!
Oh, Sarv, stop beating yourself up about your brother's request that you make his vacation plans easier by doing their job for them....you're not being selfish, he is, expecting that you will be your usual generous self and take on their responsibilities. Have they ever offered to take you along on one of these wonderful trips?? I didn't think so. Hold firm. Doesn't his wife have a friend nearby that could do this for them? Or wouldn't they impose that responsibility on any one else?
Go to the Bahamas with me......LOL My traveling companion is broke this year so I'm not planning a getaway. Plus of course, there is this kitten who seems to need constant attention.
VAnn, cuting the aprom strings for your replacement will probably be the best wake up call he can get. I didn't save the seed packet from the Moonflowers, so I don't have the proper identification for them. The blooms do open at night, and then fade away during the daylight hours. I don't think they'd get past the border, and we'd both be in trouble! I hope you can find them in Canada. Good news about the new designate, for PM....that certainly helps. If only to provide him with one redeeming quality.
Susan, you are sounding more like yourself, and we are glad to see you using both hands on the keyboard. Good that your DH is so helpful, I'd probably be surviving on potato chips and cookies if I were the invalid. DH can't, or won't, cook. My DD and I make jokes about how neglected I would be if I had a stroke or some other incapacitating ailment, but there's an underlying truth to it...!
Elailne, let us know what you're reading with your new toy!! It will be hard for you to choose, won't it? Like a buffet with too many choices!! My GDIL has dozens of books on tape from several years ago when she was a traveling rep for a luggage company. They kept her company on her long drives. I loved the cat lessons, sent them on to all my cat owned friends!!
GG, are you all better after your queasies? Probably some bug one of your clients brought in to share with you. People are so generous with their germs...
Maria, I'm sorry to hear you had a sleepless night. Samson must be wondering why you weren't in your bed, nicely tucked in. Maybe tonight will be a better one. Nights like that leave you feeling groggy all day.
Oh dear, I need to get rolling here, many errrands on my to-do list and I'm burning daylight.....catch up later, have a good day everyone....
Morning all! I'm sitting here at work while FedEx has me on hold AGAIN! Spend and hour and a half yesterday with them and problem still not fixed......Ok they just said they would call back, So I can only stay a minute.
Moonflower pictures look really pretty. ooooh another pant I want to try. So many choices ... so little time. LOL
Sarv - Don't feel guilty about saying no to your brother. Generous people often get taken advantage of.
Maria - hope you get a nap today. I'm cranky even when I get my 8 hours.
M5 - Bahamas sounds good. Or maybe Mexico! I have been dying to go back to Playa Del Carmen.
Gotta work. See ya later.
Sarv - I don't know what happened at your DB house last year, but maybe you should just tell him the truth. If his daughters did something to make house-sitting horrible for you, let him know why. Let him be upset with them instead of you.
Jody
Good morning. We'll see how far I get with this, kitten was very helpful earlier! Hubby is off to work, my breakfast is cooking on the wood stove, and I am getting ready to go help my neighbor vaccinate cattle today. Thankfully we have a good day, sunny and no wind, but it is 15 degrees so I will wear a lot of clothes, insulated overalls, boots, gloves, hat.
Susan, I'm glad to hear that you have a better night even if it wasn't real good. Improvement anyhow. Maybe you need to keep changing from the chair to the bed and back again. And getting those staples out usually makes a big difference. Stapleing people together is still a foreign concept to me, I think of wood when I think of staples, or something like a yard sale notice stapled to a utility pole. My neighbor said she was 100% more comfortable when her staples were taken out.
Sarv, I second the above: QUIT FEELING GUILTY In my opinion it is your brother who should feel guilty for having asked you again when he knows how his kids act. If they can afford the vacation they can afford to hire somebody, or they can just wait till their kids are grown and then take all the vacations they want.
Gotta eat and run.
Morning everyone
Well, the temps have dropped here again and it's 51 here now which is about a 15 degrees difference from Tuesday morning at this same time. No wonder everyone stays sick or has allergies. ;)
Susan, am glad to here you're getting those horrid staples out. Ouch! I hate those things. Had them in my knee once when I had knee surgery. *No fun*
Maria, hope you'll not be too black and blue after that beating you just got! LOL
Ann, will be keeping your DH in my thoughts and prayers for his upcoming surgery. That sounds like fun ... taking the grandwins out. I can just picture all y'all tramping around in that snow. :)
Suzie, I know what you mean about choices. I start reading about all these seeds and want them all! LOL
Sarv, I really think running away would be a *good* idea. (just teasing) I really think when we're old enough to be GOB's we ought to be able to do what we want to ... but it doesn't always work out like that, does itt?
Mary, I *promise* not to complain about my temps anymore. And if it were that cold ... I don't think I could brave it and do that! Uggg.
M5, I'll keep you posted on the Book Port. Right now I'm still just learning the in's and out's of the thing. I've learned how to transfer files to and from it to the computer, so that's a step in the right direction. There's so much to remember. I'm on brain over load right now. :)
Well, times getting by and it's taken me forever to write this as I've had several interruptions. I'll preview this time to see who has dropped by. I know I probably missed some people, but I'm waving and sending hello's. I just can't keep up.
... Elaine
LOL, Elaine, but I am from Samson when he gets roo rampunctious
Hi again,
Just a real quikkie this time. Last night I posted a link to a pdf version of a local newspaper. That "Easteneder" is related to the Orléans Online news web site. I found that the same article about my retirement is more easily available on the web site. -
http://www.orleansonline.ca/pages/N2006012501.htm
Ann
Oh Ann, thank you so much for that. My goodness ... what a *long* and wonderful career you have. That was great getting to read that article. I sort of slid in coffee a few months ago, so don't really know that much about everyone. Thank you for sharing. :)
Ooooh, I'm having trouble with this *devilish* new keyboard. :-( Am powering down and see if that helps.
... Elaine
Ann, verry interesting write-up to about you, thanks for sharing it, can imagine how busy you must have been as the food bank grew on the other hand I find this very sad to think so many people need to be fed by others rather by them selfes
Elaine,
Hope you master that new keyboard. OTOH, keyboards are not very expensive if you decide that you don't like it. The one we've had at the FC for the last year has those keys between the keyboard and the number pad all configured differently and I STILL hate it. (I haven't been around coffee much longer than you have as I only got my subscription in July).
Maria, there ARE a lot of people needing help, but one very important fact is that there is a 40% turnover of clients every year. By helping people out when they really need it, we are often equipping them to address their underlying problems.
Some people have an image of people using such help forever, but the reality is that once they no longer need it, they don't continue to use it. We have a few who for reasons of disability (which can be a variety of things) have been with us from the year we opened or nearly so, but there aren't many.
In 2005, we helped 1225 different families. They came an AVERAGE of 5.3 times each during the year. But the reality is that 409 of those families used the program just ONE time during the year. And those that used the program 1-5 times accounted for 65% of the use of the program.

Wish I coudl help you, Elaine, but I know 'beans' about anything conected with a computer, lol
Ann, thanks for your explanation, I would like to get into this a little more but I don't think this is the place.
Hi All,
Just checking in quick during lunch.
M5,
Thanks for asking,,,,,Yep, my tum tum is better,,,I think it was due to the Cellulitis coming back. Was feeling kind of in a funk, my lower back hurt something terrible and I was getting the chills again. No energy, took naps both Sat. and Sun. Saw my Dermatologist on Mon. and she perscribed some antibiotics,,,,said it was the Cellulitis coming back,,,so, hopefully in a couple of days I'll be right as rain.
Susan,
What a wonderfully long post,,,,so good to see that again,,,and 10 fingers on the keyboard,,,,,Awesome.
sarv,
Get over those feelings of guilt,,,Just because you're not up to watching your nieces doesn't mean you love your brother of his family any less.
Ann,
Thanks for the link,,,I'l be going over there to read it as soon as I'm done posting here. Glad to hear DH is going ahead with the surgery and can get in rather quickly.
Maria,
Your strudel looks scrumptious! Helped myself to a piece. Thanks. Sure hope you can get some sleep tonight.
Hi Mary, Jody, Suzie and anyone else I missed. Have a good day all,,,,gonna go get my legs up for 1/2 an hour before my Perm comes in.
See ya later,
Kelly
Went to the library and sat for awhile- I just love libraries - I should have worked in one!! Took home 5 books, and signed up for a winter reading club. I always do it, but then never fuss with it. The librarian gets credit for the number of people signed up - she is a peach, so I do anything to help her out!!
As far as feeling guilty - that is just how I am!! My brother would step in to help me out, but we never traveled when the kids were young, plus I wouldn't trust him with my kids!! When he was wifeless, he used to take his own two kids and their friends out on his huge boat and let them drink and smoke. I'm not a prude, but I wouldn't ever let my kids do that in front of me when they were not of age. And I did tell him every single thing his kids did (including breaking into the liquor cabinet!!) I think he is so easy going, that it doesn't bother him - but I am sure he never told his wife (the girls mother) I emailed him daily when he was on the cruise. His wife is kind of a cold fish and I am not close to her - she is kinda hoity-toity. (although having her girls give her grief has brought her down a peg or two!! lol) They just got married 6 yrs ago.
GG - I had cellulitis several years ago - in my face. The dentist about had a stroke- my nose was pushed sideways, eye closed etc. I even went to the emergency room and they said I had chronic sinusitis - NOT. He said it could have easily gone to my brain and then it would have been curtains for me. Had to have a root canal immediately!!
Vi - two of my neices have made use of the food panty in our town - it helped both of them out and they didn't have to go back more than a couple of times. I am thankful there are such things. Sometimes life just deals ya a bad hand. One of the neices is so giving to those who need help now - she says she has been there and knows how bad it feels. Neither of them wanted to ask for help from the family.
Well, sun is out and I think I need to take a stroll (DH is snoozing already...3:30!!!)
sarv,
Yep, by the time I got to ER last year, they wouldn't let me go home,,,put an IV in my hand and took me up to a room,,,said it was already traveling to my heart and could kill me that fast.
Can't believe they told you it was chronic Sinusitis!!!!! Oy Vey! That was a close one for you too,,,,,NOT good.
well, back to work.
Kelly
What an awful illness, how does one get it?
Oh my, don't look at me, I don't need ANYTHING else wrong with me. LOL
I went to the doc today and got the staples out. He explained to me what they did for fix my shoulder. It is now called a massive tear. Great!! He didn't actually fix it either. It wouldn't come together at the top so there is still a 'V' gap at the top. It is held together elsewhere with tethers. How about that. I am now tethered or I would fly apart I guess. ROFLOL
But I feel so much better today, I figured how to make the bed comfortable and so except for the horrible dry mouth, the night was OK. I took a bottle of water to bed so I can wet my mouth, feels like my tongue is swollen up and I can hardly swallow. Can't figure out why, it wasn't doing that in the CHAIR.
I have loaded 3 load of laundry by myself, put in and took out one load by myself, cleaned two toilets by myself. LOL
I was craving KFC so DH said after the doctor why didn't we go get a bucket for dinner. Then we came home and he fixed potato salad and we will have ranch beans and iced tea later. to go with the chicken. yummmm
Had to take a time out there to go break up a cat fight. Snowcone was in and Mercky hates him, so there was agreat deal of screaming, yowling, and chasing. I love my furkids. :-)
Kelly, I am interested in knowing about the cellulitis too. How do you get it? Can it be cured?
I (or DH and I) got the dutch iris in a pot and watered in and covered with leaves. I also gave the other pots of bulbs a nice drink with the hose. No rain in sight. Just a 'chance', the weather people think all you need is a 'chance' whether you get any or not. No problem, yeah right.
I have crocus and grape hyacinths coming up all over and with temps staying in the 60's it just doesn't help. The daffodils are now about an inch and a half. oy vey indeed.
posting a spring pic, just cause I want to. LOL
Susan
=^..^=
simply happy for you, Susan, what an awful ride you had, just please don't overdue with house work!!!!!
Thanks for the photo of your flowers, be a while here before I see any here but it is nice to know spring is around the corner.
Hi everyone. Spring is just around the corner, the trouble here is that I am a long ways from the corner. The ground is still frozen here.
Sarv, surely your brother knows that giving alcohol to minors is against the law! I know there are parents who want to be a pal to their kids, but it gets them into jail sometimes. The kids have enough pals, they need parents who are good examples. I wouldn't have trusted him with my kids either. Kids find enough trouble without some irresponsible parent helping them.
Maria, that strudel looks wonderful. My German and Swiss friends tell me about the wonderful desserts they made and I have tasted a few of them. My Swiss friend would love to run her own bakery.
The work with the cows went pretty well. We only had minor troubles, one cow went over the fence and we didn't even see her do it but could see where she landed in the snow. We are talking about a 5 or 6 foot corral fence. I think we were so busy with the cows in the chute that were making noise that we just didn't even hear a commotion behind us. This cow was in the corral and hadn't got to the smaller pens that lead into the chute, it's hard to explain to non farmers, but each pen gets smaller and narrower until it is single file with a head catch/squeeze at the end. She gets her shots, the head catch is opened and she can leave, reset it and get the next cow in. The cows got two shots today, the calves got one, then we took the cows out to a pasture by themselves and took the calves to a different pasture with a hot fence between them. They are officially weaned. These are last summer's calves, and their mothers will be starting to calve about the time we are lambing, mostly in March. I asked last summer when the bull was turned in with them if he really wanted calves that early with lambing at the same time. He thought he did, we'll see.
After the cows were back to their pastures we moved the sheep to the corrals to be ready for the partial shearing job they get tomorrow, just a trim so we can see what is going on in the hinderparts when they start to deliver their lambs, and so the lambs can find their dinner easier. The shearers are a couple of guys that have a trailer all set up for the sheep and their shearing equipment. They travel all over several states so the ranchers have to just get on their schedule and be ready. Another neighbor will be helping with that job in my place because I am leaving in the morning to go to my convention. Lucky me!
Now I need to be doing some packing and getting some dinner together, plus feeding the horses. See you later if not before.
Hi All,
It's an infection in the underlying tissue of the skin. You get it from a bacteria that we all carry on our bodies. I found a web site that has some good info on it,,,they can explain it much better than I can. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/cellulitis/DS00450 It starts with an overview and you can click on Next towards the bottom of the paragraph and it will give you more info.
Kelly
Well, hello all, I think I promised last night that I would be more hospitable today, well, that went by the wayside very early.
I was so tired last night from papering my mom's kitchen, that I showered, ate KFC, read the paper and went to bed!!. Slept well for about 4 hours, then my arms woke me up just aching. So got up and took some tylenol, and tried to go back to sleep, but couldn't. So at 4:00 am I am sitting having coffee and reading the paper.
I had a dentist's appointment at 9:30, so decided that I would go on into town, visit Walmart and Kroger, and have all my shopping done before the dental appointment. Sure glad that I did that. The dental appointment was to finish a root canal started last week. Well, I knew I had lost the temperory filling, but unbeknownst to me, part of the tooth had broken off. So ended up having to have 1/2 of that tooth removed, and they finished the root canal on the other 1/2. Now I am wearing a brace to close space between the 1/2 tooth and it's neighbor. When that is done, then the final crown will be applied to both teeth. So when this is all done, may have to visit the bank for a "dental loan". I imagine this will be thousands of $$.
Well, I have read all the posts, enjoyed them all, kittymom, glad that you seem to be doing so much better. Other than that please know that I am not intentionally ignoring anybody. Waving and smiling to all. I am so hoping that next week will be a little saner, and I will have time to visit frequently during the day.
I am going to visit other threads, and will be back later.
Kittymom what kind of Dr is that you got tell DH to go out and put some super glue on that shoulder and slap a piece of duck tape on it and get you busy. Duck tape should hold you together long enough to get some chore done. He can always put more duck tape on anyway.
Susan, take it easy! It sounds like you are feeling a lot better, but as Maria said, don't overdo or you'll mess up your progress. I'm so glad you are up and about. Thanks for the spring photo, there's hope, isn't there?
Still winter here too although with temps in the 40s you'd never know it. Sammi had to go to the vet today, his eyes were all red and icky. Caught a little cold, so he's got some eye drops, and had his distemper shot. Had them do a fiv and fel test for virus and they came back negative so that's good news. Vet was the one who took care of Oskar, and she said she was glad I got a new kitten. She just had one of her old furkids put down, too. I like her very much.
MaryE, I can't imagine a cow getting over a fence that high! She must have been very determined. Sounds like you planned your trip at a good time. Have a wonderful time, we'll miss you while you are gone. Who;s taking care of Amanda Panda? Is DH staying home?
Ann, the write up in the paper was very nice. You have really given a lot to that food pantry, and it shows. I know that most people don't want to stay on assistance for any period of time, unlike the popular image of them. Nobody wants to be poor. I've been poor....it's not where anyone wants to stay. I'm probably one of the few people who enjoys paying bills.........because I can. There were times when it was rob Peter to pay Paul....and it's not fun. Thank goodness there are places where help is available. And people like you who are willing to give their time and energy to make it possible.
GG, I don't know what cellulitis is and I'm afraid to find out. Everytime I learn about a new bug or invasive weed, they show up in my garden.....maybe knowing too much is not a good thing!
I'm heading for the couch with a sleepy kitten so I'll say goodnight and check in in the morning to see what's new. Enjoy the evening!
Sheila
Sheila,
LOL Cellulitis is an infection in your body,,,,won't grow in your garden,,,lol
Poor Sammi, he doesn't look very happy ;o{
Maybe this will cheer some of you... I took my 3 variegated brugmansias and put them in the ground at my sister's (near Orlando) in November. Today she sent me this photo of one blooming yesterday. I think it's called Peaches and Cream.
Got the corners boxed in on the pump house today, and 2 of the 4 finished with trim. Not much will happen for a few days since I'm going to Miami to see my youngest aunt. I should be back home maybe Tuesday. Oh, I forgot to tell you. I'm stopping to see Patischell on the way down!
Poof. Went to look at the pics above and the carefully written message that was almost done disappeared. Let's see,
I said thanks for the Mayo Clinic link. Looks like the home page might be worth bookmarking.
there was a caution to Susan not to overdo things and not to overuse the other arm while healing.
There was commisseration for defoe over the dental woes.
I enjoyed the pics above and agree that Sammi doesn't look too happy. Glad that his problems are not serious.
Sarv, re use of an emergency food program, many of the staff and volunteers had kids that at one stage of their lives would have been forced to use such a program if family support hadn't been available. In some cases, families WON'T support them. In other cases they can't. Or as in the case you mentioned they are reluctant to admit to famillly that they need help for any of a variety of reasons.
Over the years we've helped the kids of a number of people I know. And I've never mentioned it to the parents because it's totally confidential.
Got some work to do and may or may not check in again before bed.
Have a good night if I don't.
Ann
Darius, that brug is really lovely. Glad to see that your sister is looking after your plants OK.
Have a good and safe trip.
Ann
