Confessions Part II: What lilies have you planted for 2006?

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

I got my seed from Thompson & Morgan, the picture they show doesn't sell them well, but they are amazing!

Another pic shows the lilies finished but dahlias go on until frosts, you don't notice the dead stems! Also another rose here at the left on the electricity post, it was here but I'm sure is Compassion. The dahlias attracted many butterflies I hadn't seen before too, one is a large white, honey scented, the Red Admirals loved it.

I'm going to try to behave until the Lily Society Bulb sale in Des Moines next month. Got to support my club---

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Do you need permission to behave? No-one here is going to give it to you!

What's the betting you get tempted? I did today, went to the Supermarket to do my shopping, and there they were! Lots of very new varieties, and cheaper than most too!

The only one I remember is Tom Pouce, but I didn't go for those, I went for the calla lilies. Crystal Blush, and Black Forest, nice bulbs too. £2.29 each, (x $1.75) Black Forest would cost more like £4.95, plus £3.95 postage (for any amount) from J Parkers. Crystal Blush I haven't seen, only on a calla lily site. Got some other goodies too.

Wandasflowers, you just wait until you walk into a supermarket and see those bulbs begging to be bought!

Corte Madera, CA

neal, now that you mentioned hydrangeas and veronicas (i had to look em up), i'm thinking of planting BLUE hydrangeas behind the roses and still go for the orange/yellow lilies, then veronicas in front.

this is super exciting.

wallaby, thanks again for the photos.

wanda, "next month" hopefully is not towards the end of march.

have a great weekend!

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Is the end of March a bad thing?? Actually the sale closer to the 'ides' ~ and that might only make our pocketbooks keel over. hee hee Oh well, they should recover. They always do.

Corte Madera, CA

moby, end of the month is way too long of a wait....FOR ME. i'm so impatient =).

been gardening all morning. tending to my roses. checking for more brugs to whack....

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

The waiting isn't too difficult when it's 23° , snowing and blowing hard.

(Sue) South Central, IA(Zone 5a)

amen to that Mary! I liked Jan. better this year, but my gardens have went back to sleep (I hope) for awhile yet.

I have been starting some lily seeds and I havew my first hint of green showing today, I am so excited. I just love all the combinations I am seeing with the lilies. Roses, hydrangeas, clematis, and dahlias; I will have to give some serious thought to revamping my gardens.

I am looking at some hydrangeas to plant in front of my other shrubs and want to stay about 4-5 ft in height and width. Can't find too many to choose from. I do worry about interplanting with shrubs because you need to lift and divide lilies once in awhile. Does that harm the roots of the shrubs?

Corte Madera, CA

llilyfan, please post photos =).

some of the lilies i planted are coming up already. it's been a warm week. my meandering path is lined with lilies on the right side, and daffodils on both sides. this is so exciting. i don't know how this will look like, but hoping it will be awesome.

I'll post pictures of my seedlings when the camera can tell them from the soil LOL! They are just barely poking their little hairpin noses above the soil at this moment, another day or two and the camera might be able to see them.

Moonglow, I'm soo jealous of the growth you have, but then, You will be done blooming and I'll still have lovely lilies gracing my yard. So I guess it all works out in the end.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

Annapet, I have the same growth on my lilies. Not from the ones you sent but from an earlier batch. If my weather continues, your batch should start peaking anytime now, as these bulbs were bigger than the ones I planted earlier. I was thrilled and am thrilled for you.

Haydenville, MA(Zone 5a)

How exciting to see the new growth on your lilies! Keep the pics/progress notes coming. With all the snow here, it is hard to imagine the garden in its green and blooming state - thanks!

Here's a little nuthatch on our rock wall....trying to get out of the snow I think - looking for seeds.

Hi Haydenville! How much did you get? We only got 5-6". Maybe the wind whooshed it away. We just shoveled and snow blew in record time. It seems to have stopped snowing here. My car swept off in a few minutes. Light and dry. One of those rare winters where Boston gets more than we do.

Haydenville, MA(Zone 5a)

I was quite disappointed myself...I was hoping for a bit more snow to protect the gardens....this few inches (I don't think we got much more than you did) will be melted in a few days when it hits 40degrees again. Oh well.
(Central Park in NYC broke all records...26.9 inches!)

All I got was flurries and more grass fires .

llilyfan--revamp your gardens? Why not? You still had GRASS last time I was there.... :)

(Sue) South Central, IA(Zone 5a)

Ok, here is the picture of my little sprouts. I'm hoping you all can tell them from the soil they are growing in. These are asiatics, so far nothing from my formosum or my orienpets.

Wanda, I'm diligently working on that grass problem. My biggest ememy is actually that acre horse pasture on the other side of the fence, I keep stealing from my poor horsies!

Tazzy, we skipped Oklahoma coming home from Nevada in early January, because of wildfires in the OK City area and you're still blattling them? Hope you get enough rain to put an end to them soon.

Sue, thanks for the pics of your babies!

Warms me up and I can hope the snow I see coming down outside won't stay for long. Alot of parents scrambling today--cancelled school & college & many events. 6-9 inches of snow plus thunder & lightening. Ain't life grand?

(Sue) South Central, IA(Zone 5a)

Yeppers it sure is! We had thunder, lightning, rain and sleet for about 3 hours very early this morning. Not much of anything since 7.

I am so excited about my babies, I have 4 pots with seedlings emerging out of 13, I keep thinking about that old adage, 'a watched pot'............Maybe they'll never come out to play!

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

Checking them 10 times a day? Get a life! Ha ha

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Oh, I do it to, lol. It's running between the computer and the grow light room constantly for me, especially on my days off. I think we're commiserating(sp?) winter away, and what a great way to get through it :)

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Tazzy, what was that link again?

tazzy, I'll have to join another 'place' to get to see what your trying to show me!! Not sure I have the stamina to keep up the pace.

gemini_sage, I have to make sure their topssoil isn't drying out and crusting over! 2 more containers have at least 1 seedling emerging.

Sand Springs, OK(Zone 7a)

Sorry it just wont link it was a live news cast of lighting striking ground .

(Sue) South Central, IA(Zone 5a)

That's okay tazzy, we had plenty here :-)

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Hi all! Throughout this thread we've discussed what plants we may combine our new lilies with to show them off, and the colors we're finding ourselves drawn to. Being predisposed to tangents, I often find myself discussing many other plants and ideas, hehehe. So that our tangents can run wild I've started a thread in the Curb Appeal forum. Then as the discussion goes to roses, annuals, perennials, etc. we're still right on track! http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/576725/

Neal.

Corte Madera, CA

cool, neal. i'll be there. finally friday! i have worked for a whole week. whew! lol.

i hope you all had a great week, and the weekend is kicking off to a wonderful start. i miss dave's and i miss my plants, but i may be able to do a little gardening at the office. DO YOU ALL DO THAT at the office, too?

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Hey there working girl! I thought you may be here this evening. So is orienting yourself to the job going smoothly? Sending good job vibes, lol. Since I work with cut flowers all day, I just think about growing them, and wish I could combine tulips, lilies, and asters in bloom at the same time in the garden!

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

I want reblooming lilies.....

Sand Springs, OK(Zone 7a)

why not ?
lets have it all and right now OK ?

Sand Springs, OK(Zone 7a)

did i sound catty in last post ?
GOOD !
LOL

Columbia Heights, MN(Zone 4a)

Reblooming lilies, that would be so cool. I get sooooo bummed once the last one finishes blooming that I usually go out and buy some potted ones to help extend the season. I wonder if they make silk ones you could stick here and there in the garden. Did you see that one Steve posted earlier today that he called his Easter something or other? Looked like Regale. Gave me spring fever something awful. Think I'm going to have to go over to Bachman's or the Como Lake Conservatory this weekend and just soak in all the plant life.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Oh.......I would soooo love to join you at Como! I miss that place and the zoo so much.
