Confessions Part II: What lilies have you planted for 2006?

Corte Madera, CA

i'll get some at HD then.

=)

Corte Madera, CA

i'm glad you got them neal. the loose ones are oriental lilies, noblesse. freshly dug. i kept the babies! lol. there are more that i wanted to send but i have to fix another box for them goodies. i also have yet to e-mail you back. it's just that things are changing around here in the yard so much, and i don't know where i can plant more stuff. i just know the front yard is going to be sunnier after the pine trees are taken down. even if you send me goodies next year, it will be ok, too.

Myrtle Beach, SC

Annapet, Thank you so much!! This was the best surprise !!! My goodie box arrived around 4 pm and I am thrilled!! I did not have any of the ones you sent either. I have the perfect spot for all of them. I have had a "bug" and have not been outside to play in the yard in a few days, but tomorrow....ohhhh boy :)) They are wonderful and every time I see them I wil think of you and all my friends here at DG :)) This is such a great forum!!! God bless you all, Margo

Corte Madera, CA

you are welcome! i've been wanting to send you those, but i got sidetracked...

i hope you are feeling better well enough to play in the dirt today. it's going to rain here all day - - - no fun for me.

noblesse and tom pouce look great with PINK roses.

=)

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Oh yes, Noblesse has a home waiting just behind 6 Gruss an Aachen roses, a Cornelia rose behind (soft coral), and closeby The fairy rose, Orania Orienpets, and a pink butterfly bush! I can hardly contain my excitement! This is an area I have devoted to pastels, with some dark foliar accents.

Corte Madera, CA

must be heaven in your garden, neal.

i'm giving my neighbor 2 WEEKS to give us his land-swap (very small area so he can build his garage) proposal. i may say bye-bye to my front berm where i have 5 flowering brugs (yes, even in january) if and when the land swap happens.

after two weeks and no proposal, i'm planting lilies in front of my brugs to hide their legs....then perhaps shorter lilies, too.

that berm gets full sun. ROSES as well?

=)))

Corte Madera, CA

saw "kissproof" at costco. will come back and fetch it tomorrow.

...and dizzy, nippon...maybe stargazer.

way too common but new to me!

Thats a good deal to jump on Annapet, often Dizzy is a little more expensive than some of the others- is'nt it gorgeous! How pretty with red roses it would be. I sure am hoping for "heaven" in the garden this year; this will be my 4th year gardening here and the first 2 phases of my cottage garden should be matured nicely. And since the height of my lily display was cut short last summer by a falling tree, seeing mature clumps of lilies this year will surely make me squeal with delight!

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Ok, no more repeating myself, LOL.

Corte Madera, CA

there was an echo much earlier in the morning, neal. thanks for the info.

i'm really having a blast with the plant offers at costco. i'm trying to hold off at least another week when the coupon becomes valid, but there may not be any left. you know where i'll be going today.

i hope you are all having a great week so far.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Annapet, the deals you're getting are incredible. I saw someone on ebay is selling them, with a pic of the package. At practically wholesale price I can see it. Did your lilies you got last year come from Costco?

Corte Madera, CA

Yes, Neal, they were from Costco as well. I would have bought more if I know a thing or two about them. LOL. I was so new last year.

On ebay? I gotta see!

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Ok, in my Lily Garden turmoil of choosing, the insanity of wanting everything makes me have to start all over. Plotting and planning the nursery beds where I'll let the precious single bulbs propagate and mature, but how do choose wich babies to adopt? So now I'm looking at the Season of Bloom Collection, which is all CP varieties for all summer bloom. They're just over $2 each that way, and since I only have 5 varieties they sell, I'm bound to luck out on some good ones. Have any of you tried this collection?
Neal.

Corte Madera, CA

drool. see, what you did, neal? i had to check out TLG again. lol.

(boys and girls, before i BURST, i should tell you now that i have accepted a job offer last week, and i start feb 13. on the up side, i don't have to rely on my "allowance" alone. hee-hee. the down side, i'll miss you all, and weekends will be the only time to play in the dirt.)

somewhere, PA

Annapet! Congratulations. But you can't abandon us. Can't you find a little
time for DG? Maybe you've been sleeping too long & could just cut that down a bit?
Tam

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Congrats Annapet! Better make sure you've wiped out Costco before your job starts, lol.

Corte Madera, CA

Thank you!

Tam, most likely I'll check in at night or first thing in the morning.

Neal, guess what? My new work is halfway between my house and Costco!

I'm going to miss my son though =(.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

uh oh, there goes your paychecks!

Corte Madera, CA

neal, i've been so good, i haven't even made a prelim list of the plants i want to buy.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

annapet, congratulations, I am happy for you.

Corte Madera, CA

thanks, nery! i probably won't feel so guilty spending money on plants. lol.

Corte Madera, CA

ooops...i forgot my question. please don't laugh.

so, what are the FALL planting lilies?

thanks!

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Annapet, as I understand it, all the lily bulbs are harvested in fall. While fall is the preferable time to plant them, the harvest of the bulbs comes so late in the season, many areas are getting too cold to plant. So most of the bulbs are stored in coolers and marketed for sping planting, which I assume is why the best selection of lilies available to choose from is in spring. I've noticed when I plant lilies in fall, they're more likely to attain near full height the first summer. I think this is because lilies never go fully dormant, and they like the extra few months to get established.
Neal

Corte Madera, CA

thanks, neal. i see. the thing is, lilies are NEVER AROUND my area in fall. but maybe i also do not know where to look.

=)

Myrtle Beach, SC

Congratulations Pet !!! I am so happy for you but sad for us. I'll miss you so much !! What will you be doing ?? Maybe they will let you use their money to buy plants to decorate their place? (ohhh, so much fun spending "their" money)
My Costco had some bulbs when I was there Tuesday but I was so good. Only bought 5 bags total: 3 glads, 1 lily and 1 Tigridia. No roses yet. I am waiting on the sale on the 6th also. God bless, Margo

Corte Madera, CA

what timing, margo. i just sent you a d-mail. i was a controller for a general contracting firm before i became a mommy, now i'm doing something similar, but more in the operations side. i even have a title, lol. operations manager. whatever that means.

believe me, during my interview, my eyes wandered....where to put plants....lol. i'm extra excited because more nurseries are up that way! kell told me about armstrong's and they carry DA austin roses.

=)

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

I never see lilies from any local sources in fall either, only catalogs. I think most fall bulbs are already being discounted in big box stores when lilies are ready to ship.

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

I've got a pile of lilies on order--does that count?

Corte Madera, CA

of course, wanda! thanks for stopping by. so, what did you order?

nosey people want to know.

=)

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

I doubt even she knows for certain. lol A few of us got together last month and we "ooo'd and ah'd" over a bunch and divvied some collections.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Moby and Wanda, what lilies would you consider "must have" lilies- the ones that have shown exceptional garden qualities in your gardens. And on the flip side, are there any you've tried that don't live up to their descriptions? First hand experience is the greatest reference!
Neal

Corte Madera, CA

yes, please! awesome idea, neal.

well, this is my last week of FREEDOM. weather is cooperating. gorgeous blue skies for a whole week. and it rains again the monday i start. lol.

today i tended my roses, weeded, and planted MORE LILIES. one DA golden celebration has a few blooms, and the scent is wonderfully fragrant.

i'm a very happy girl.

=)

i hope you are all having a great weekend.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

I'm not sure I can be of much help ~ they all have their qualities and I honestly have not had a lily that I was disappointed with. Perhaps the only disappointment is that when you purchase a "strain" it may look just slighty different than what you were expecting. (eg: African Queen strain)

Let's see what really wow'ed me ~ Royal Sunset with it's number of blooms. Casa Blanca and Atlantic Ocean for it's huge blooms, and intoxicating fragrance. Cathedral Windows for it's very vibrant colors. Silk Road was quite respectable in height for it's first year and Le Reve for it's lovely lavender-pink color.

Now if you could just paint an oriental with the patterns of the asiatics....

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Moby, those are just the kinds of observations I was looking for; thank you! Never found a lily I did'nt like either, but there are those with super qualities I like to bump up on my list. Cathedral Windows sounds like one of those. I think Orientals painted with Asiatic colors is just around the corner; I'd love to try the Oriental-Asiatic crosses 'Fancy Crown' and 'First Crown', and would bet there will be many more to follow.
Neal.

Hi, again, everybody--

I have been gone a few days and this thread has gotten out of control with lily fanatics gone wild. And I am so full of envy! I am lusting after your lily gardens.

Now, please pardon me and don't blow me off on this question--probably should be a separate thread but since all of the lily experts are 'tuned in' here--

Are any lilies useful in attracting Butterflies or Hummers? I would love to have some lilies in my HB/BF Garden if I could justify their presence!

If you know anything about this please e-mail me if it's too off topic.

I wonder if our Ohio/Midwest Costcos are stocking lilies or is it too early?

Thanks. t.

p.s. kbaumle-- you mean you are backing out on your RU invitation?!! Well, maybe we'll have to have our own private RU at your place during lily bloom time! I'll bring the (long island?) lemonade! I would love to see your lilies in bloom!

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

You're welcome to visit anytime! But I don't do well at entertaining large groups! And a large group to me would be 10! LOL! Seriously, if anyone is ever in the area and wants to stop by, just let me know so I'd be sure to be home!

t, not off topic at all. we'd love to learn about that, too, but hard to concentrate on other things other than LILIES often. LFGW - - - lily fanatics gone wild. i like that. lol.

hummers never leave my deck, and it's devoid of plants (that will change this year). in the afternoon, i hang my golden retriever's blanky on the rail, and a few hummers kept on coming back. i watched them, and they were getting a strand of HAIR at a time from the blanket! now i have a feeder for them, open bar all the time.

i've always been curious where the hummer HQ is, and the closest tree is a big ficus tree 4' away from the deck. i haven't seen the nest of course. would be really interesting.

thanks for the observations, moby!

kylee, i'm not good in big groups either. it will be a while for me to invite friends over. the property is a mess.

off to church soon.

=)

neal, learned you like rose standards. i wish i can send you BRUG STANDARDS. i have quite a few....if you ever visit the bay area! i haven't figured out how to mail something like that.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

tabasco, not off topic at all, and lilies are a perfect addition to the butterfly/hummer garden. The hummers love my orange Asiatics, but ignored the pastel ones. And swallowtails constantly hover around my Orientals. Butterflies also love tall phlox, which bloom at the same time as Orientals and make gorgeous companions for them.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I guess red, reddish plants is good enough? In other words, maybe not everything needs to be hummer attractant, just one, but maybe sorrounded by lots of red but not nec. hummer attractant.

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

Annapet, I love BEING in large groups, it's ENTERTAINING them that I have a hard time with! I want to be the one being entertained! LOL!!!
