These are so lovely. Lily season must be heaven in your yards!
Confessions Part II: What lilies have you planted for 2006?
I played this game earlier this week with a lily buddy in Australia! I haven't a clue on the first one. I don't think I remember seeing this one before. Is it an Oriental? Short or tall? When does it bloom? Are those spots red, maroon or brown. Spots make me think it's an oriental/species cross.
The second one looks like one of the Belles (asiapet).
Here's Creamy Belles
doss ~ yes, lily season is lovely but oh, so fleeting. sigh......
The second lily is asiatic.
The white lily has dark raspberry spots and blooms at the same time as the rest of my orientals. Heavenly fragrance ~ dare I say the scent might even be better than Stargazer? Here's another pic for a side view.
I think this lovely is Kyoto and not Lavender Lady. Sending some pics for comparison.
Description:
Yellowish white inside, with many dark red spots on lower part of
each petal; outside yellowish white, the midveins tinged light yellow-green; nectaries dark purple; pollen strong orange. Fls 265mm wide; petals 130 x 62mm, inner petals ruffled, strongly recurved. Lvs alternate, 170 x 45mm, mid green. Stems 0.9m, mid green, with c5 fls. July.
I was leaning toward Kyoto so we'll see what another year brings. Last summer was it's first year and the stems were right around 3 ft. tall. It would be nice to know the name because I sure like it a lot.
Thanks for the nice pics, beaker.
wow, that's gorgeous, too.
i was at another costco the other night and found the amarone/suncrest i was looking for. so odd that i placed it back on the rack. i think bulb lust cannot be satisfied by costco lilies alone.
lol. i've gone nuts.
No longer satisfied by those bags and bags of lilies...tisk, tisk. I'm sorry dear, I'm afraid you've moved far beyond the point of return.
Welcome to the other side!
beaker ~ thanks for the help on the lilies. I've found a few that are close, but I have resigned myself to having no name for the asiatic. They were supposed to be Tropical Dream and have since been replaced. No problem though, someday I'll share them with some poor soul who has no lilies at all. And watch the addiction begin.... ;)
Sneaking in a quick peek this afternoon as I really need to buckle down and make spagettii sauce tonight. Should of done that last night, but was having way too much fun online.
Moby, name it yourself, Call it Moby's Mystery. We'll all want bulbs when it grows up. Actually, what I really want is your Kyoto. You don't know what a lucky mistake that was.
OK, Moby's Mystery works for me. Now get outta here and make your sauce! LOL (DG has a way of sucking you in)
Take up all of my time that you want!!!
Come on, tease us some more!
beaker, I love the 'bells' series! Do those come from the Lily Nook?
Neal.
I have Creamy Belles and Firey Belles in my garden and, if I recall, I got those at my local Lily society bulb sale a few years ago. This year, the Lily Nook has Firey, Golden and Ivory Belles (9.00 to 10.00). They're asiapets and mid-season bloomers all about 3'. I haven't seen them anywhere else so far. The one nice thing about the Lily Nook is that the actual cost for bulbs is about 15% from the listed price because the Lily Nook is in Canada. The bad part, is the shipping is very expensive. On the stuff I ordered yesterday, 25.00! I like their bulbs, but if I can find them elsewhere, I usually do that because of the shipping costs. Unfortunately, they always seem to have irresistible bulbs no one else has.
Dear Annapet:
yipee yipee yipee, I got my new lilies Expression
thank you thank you thank you
oh, you are welcome, nery. here's hoping i'll have more to share next year. things just grow here like crazy. who knows, i'll even try to root roses this year!
Annapet - I've had good success rooting roses. Not hard at all. I got four
Knock Out roses last year and have three baby roses from a wonderful old
shrub rose my Mom wanted to share with her friends. With your green thumb,
you'll have great success!
thanks for the vote of confidence, tam. my roses will be a year old this spring/summer and it will be so awesome if i could share them with friends. i grow mostly austins, so watch out. lol.
would you share your rooting method? i'd love to try a few. i wonder what neal's secret is. i'm thinking of experimenting on rockwool instead of coir.
these are beautiful lilies, beaker. thanks for sharing. did you order these recently, or you've been growing them in your garden?
i just looked at some lily sites, and i have started to crumble....
I just ordered these from the Lily Nook for spring delivery. They should bloom this summer, but next year's blooms will be better.
beaker, you are a lily fiend, and I love that! Great selections.
Annapet, I think I just got lucky rooting roses. I just took last spring's prunings and dipped them in rooting powder and stuck 'em in the ground. I kind of forgot about them in the spring frenzy and when I thought to check them, about 1/2 were growing and one even bloomed during the summer. My soil is sandy, but almost never dries out, so I think that gave them the moisture and aeration they need.
Moonglow, what kind of glue do you need? Or are you asking for glue? LOL
gemini - Actually what I am is a sore loser. The first time I planted orientals, none of them came up. I resolved to learn all I could and I'm still in that process. Somewhere along the way, it turned into an obsession. Last year I dug up half my lawn in back just so I'd have more room. I've been toying with the idea of digging up some more lawn this summer, but I think the dog would leave me if I took anymore of his "space". So now I'm coveting a piece of my neighbor's yard. Maybe he won't notice if I stick a few bulbs over there; guys generally don't notice a work of real beauty, LOL.
great selections indeed, beaker.
neal, oh how lovely. i doubt that "i'll forget about them" after sticking them in the ground. they will probably perish from daily check-ups. lol. or perhaps more.
i know this is not the rose forum, but i will most likely share my roses here anyhow, so i'll post what i will be trying to root come spring.

you may cut and paste and plmk (d-mail) which one you like and i'll try to root em first bloom per serve (do i really need a spent bloom cutting?). will be a fun project. NOTE: i could really suck rooting roses....
on the other hand, brugs are EASY.
=)
doss, beaker, we cross-posted.
lol, i think i cannot be saved!
beaker, that's funny. but how pretty it will be. i bet your neighbor will be surprised a fairy planted some bulbs....
=)
Annapet - I took the cuttings, dipped 'em in rooting hormone and then put them
in a deep pot with just vermiculite. I then covered the entire tray with plastic & put
it in a shady spot (in my greenhouse). I pulled some out too soon the first time so
out of maybe 10, only four survived. This batch, I kept the plastic on 'til I noticed
leaves and then pulled it off slowly (opened a bit more every few days). Now I've
got four out of four growing leaves. I transplanted one into a pot w/soiless mix.
Both times I did the cuttings in late fall.
Tam
thanks, tam. oh, fall is too far away. lol. the impatient newbie. i have to google vermiculite. is it similar to perlite?
i planted more lilies today: DONAU. a dozen, i think. but i could be wrong.
I started them in fall only 'cause that's when I got the cuttings! I don't know if it matters.
Vermiculite is mined mica-like product I believe. Google will give you more info than I can. LOL
Tam
LOL beaker, that was hysterical! I, to understand obsession; there are those magical genera that just capture me, and lilies are right up there with roses (and iris, and hosta, and daylilies....aaaahhhh somebody prescribe something!).
Annapet, I got the most wonderful box of lilies today!!! You're such a sweetie! Thank you soooo much! Be sure and tell about some areas your planting, so I can customize your box of goodies a bit- how fun! Are the loose ones trumpets? Those roots are huge!
Neal.
