What (exactly) is a "clod"?

Marshall, MO(Zone 5b)

A "Clod" is the persons you delt with to put you in the middle of this mess.

I'm amazed even elephant ears would grow in that stuff. Seems to me the only thing that could live in it would be day lilies, and they can live in ANYTHING, from what I have seen!

Terry, HERE is what a CLOD is:

Terry, they are in the business of knowing clay from topsoil. I am tired of contractors not doing what they have contracted to do. I hope you will not just let them slide.

When I worked in construction, the term "topsoil" referred to any dirt, rather than gravel. We ordered "topsoil" to level a site, and that meant clay soil in construction terms.

"Topsoil" for the landscapers is an entirely different thing. So if you order the soil from a "truck driver" or someone who generally delivers to construction sites, you'll get clay. If you order from a landscaper or nursery, you usually get the nice stuff. Even when ordering from a nursery, I always go see what they have so I can decide if I want it.

I've bought bags of topsoil at various places and again the difference is vast. Some brands have really crappy topsoil--stuff I wouldn't use anywhere. Other brands have great stuff.

It is definitely possible that the delivery was a very big error based on the driver's ignorance. However, the customer has amply demonstrated dissatisfaction. I would offer a video to the local media in re. Yes, one does need to see topsoil before it is delivered - the mere thought of getting noxious weeds would do it for me - the dreaded goutweed or mile-a-minute.......yech! Here, one considers the mixing in of peat moss and sand before delivery; subsoil here is grey, very stony, with plenty of one-person, two-person rocks. With regard to sand (delivered), I know of one instance where there was salt in it........... occasioning the loss of some seed that season. There are now better standards for landscaping new homes i.e. depth of topsoil is more than 2 inches. Also, the practice of burying debris around new homes should be outlawed if it hasn't been done already - I insisted on this in 1978 when we shell-contracted our home, as it was bad enough to remove garbage from the property (stoves/fridges!) in the first place.
