I can hardly wait...this will be exciting.
spring 'Secret Easter Bunny' trade
Okay..... Critter I sent you Dmail, but guess I'd better do it here!! I have been procrastinating, watching the thread, because I feel inadequate with just noids.... so, still room? Thanks Jill. It sounds like so much fun!!
Sanna
Yeah ! Welcome Sanna :)) I don't think any of us have been growing African violets long. And most of us here are new and lot's only had noids. Don't be shy we all help each other and learn new things each day :)) Share the joy of the addiction to African violets :))
I just really started growing them and started with my first lighted plants stand will be two years in March. I had been buying them crazy on Ebay but never wanted to grow them by leaf 6-9 months of longer for a blooming plant ?? hmmmm I'd never live that long. I had lots of plants all blooming in every window and table and I must of had close to a dozen three way lamps going from the time I got up until I went to bed. lol The house of lights. Then I put a couple leaves down, I have grown them everyway you can imagine. Then I joined a local group that had started in 1955 and I was giving a clear 6 quart shoe box, solo cups, wick and leaves and told how to do it...and from there is History . I'm addicted ! Welcome ! Allison
Thank you so much!! I'm looking forward to it! :o)
Sanna
I'm makin' a list.... and checkin' it twice!! :-)
Just a reminder.... please post about your preferences if you haven't done so. It doesn't have to be specific, just something for your Secret EB to have fun with.... Do you like purple flowers? Frilly blooms? etc. I'm sure everyone's box will include AVs they didn't even know they were wishing for until they saw them, but it can be fun to try to find something that you know will make your person do the Snoopy Dance.
Okay... a list, huh?? Ahem... well. What has been interesting most lately are some of the more reddish varieties. Looking at Rob's, they would be something similar to Bob Serbin, Cherries 'n Cream, Crimson Ice, Raspberry Rampage. The ones with white edges are so pretty.... and I've never had a trailer.
I can hardly wait! Something to look forward to!
Sanna
Nice list Sanna )) Everyone should have a red and a tailer or two in their collections :))
Allison
I'm in the process of sending out Dmails now to let everyone know who is their Secret Easter Bunny Trade buddy. I am including your buddy's name and address in the Dmail.
I'm also copying any notes I have about their wishes or interests, but your best bet is to check around in the AV forum for posts they have made....
You can search for threads people have started by clicking on the "Memberlist" tab on your home page. From there, enter their DG name to get to their Garden Site. Then click on "view the threads member X has started."
I'm hoping there might be a way to look for all the posts from a particular member in a forum.... the AV forum isn't that huge, and this might be a way to skim around for clues. I Dmailed admin to ask about this after I tried a couple of things that didn't work, so I'll let you know what answer I get.
When I get through getting buddy assignments squared away, I'll edit my top post for clarity and additional information. As we go along, I'll try to put useful links there too about cutting/starting leaves, packaging plants for shipping, etc. So if you have questions about things on this trade, please check the initial posts to see if information has been added there that might help you.
Aaaaaaannnd we're off! Wheeeeeee!
Critter, just a few questions.
are you going to email us a reminder in April, or do we just go ahead and mail out. What day in April do we mail on. Any tips on packaging up plants and leaves. (Allison, perhaps you could post a tutorial, your plants/leaves were expertly packaged)
Min. is 2 plants (plantlets) and 5 pairs of leaves, but we can send special gifts as well right?
I also had a thought after reading about the mites today. Any special care we can do prior to sending out plants/leaves to make sure no one spreads plant cooties around. All of my plants appear healthy and disease/bug free however I think things like mites are pretty tiny to the naked eye. Since I'm pretty new to keeping AV's alive (been buying them for 15 years and keep killing them but lately I've been able to do very well) any advise you can provide will be appreciate. And I know it cant hurt to reiterate what Allison keeps telling us, ISOLATE.
Also will you be posting a thread where we can show off our 'gifts'?
Thanks
Lali
I think it'll be best to start new threads for some of these questions -- packaging & how to limit the chance of spreading anything bad, help with starting AVs from leaf, etc. I will post links to those threads at the top of this thread.
I will add other information to the top of this thread after I get things squared away.
I will make sure the top post covers details like dates, minimums, shipping confirmation, etc. If I don't get a shipping confirmation number from you the first week in April, I will email you a reminder. I think setting the shipping date as "the first week or two in April, weather permitting" should work. Let's try to get all boxes out before April 15!
*whew!*
All the Dmails have been sent, and I've edited the first post at the top of this thread with some changes and additional information.
I'll keep adding to the top of this thread as we go along so that links to other threads and so forth will be easy to find. So keep checking that first post!
:-)
I was looking at people's list. Deb I want everything on your list. lol
You have a mighty good list . I want in searching for Fancy Lady. WOW
It's a beeautiful Chimera :)) I fount it one place.
Fancy Lady -$17.50- PHOTO-GC - An excellent bloomer, with soft pink, single and semidouble pansies. Each petal has a light blue center stripe, with darker blue fantasy specks dancing on each flower. A pretty bouquet stands above heavily variegated, dark green foliage, with tons of beige on the leaf edge, and light green mixed in with it! The standard foliage is lightly quilted.
Wish I had it I'd be sharing it with all as many sucker babies I could get ~
Does everyonee have their wish listup-dated.
Well, I was working on mine ~~ then I had to throw out all those violets.....so I'm RE-EVALUATING! =)
Oh Betty you should ask for extra's :)) Maybe you could also give us a list of what you lost and any of us that have them can share them with you in the Spring , plus the Sawp you'll get a lot back :))
Allison
Alright, then. I suppose I will be a good boy and contribute my wish list, now that I am more familiar with Saintpaulia cultivars and thereby have afterimages of certain plants on the inside of my eyelids.
This list is just a suggestion of cultivars that I found and want. It gives a person a general idea of the madness I enjoy.
Thanks,
Kenton
'Rebel's Splatter Kake
The Night Life
Mac's Southern Springtime
Mac's Rouges Rouge
Pow Wow
Neon Fantasy
Stargate
Scandal
Rob's Lucky Charm
Mac's Virtually Velvet
Frosty Spring
Strawberry Daiquiri
Ma's Melody Girl
Rob's Slap Happy
Garnet Halo
Peppermint Girl'
I enjoy spackled colors, tri-colors, picotees, dark colors, reds, colorful and shapely leaves, those odd little fantasy spots that are like blurry stars (ie 'Optical Illusion), a nice green, trailers and wasps (thanks to Allison.)
My ultimate dream is a nice single red with white edge, and leaves with a matching white edge. (Heart skips a beat...)
But truly, Any African Violet is beautiful!
Edited to add 'Midget Gumdrop.' Or anything with mosaic variegation!

'Rebel's Splatter Kake is blooming now !! I have leaves down also,
I sent Kenton about 5 trailers plants and leaves, I told him hope likes
trailers .lol I can never have too many , wink wink
Only a real plant nut would understand, Thanks, MsC.
I just don't know of that many trailers. But, a person could see that a variegated, red, or speckled trailer would make me dance a jig.
Thank You for the offer, Allison. Does your 'Rob's Slap Happy' have crown leaves that are mauve?
Have you two put up your wishlists? Not that either of you don't own a single cultivar...
Allison and MsC: What is your favorite Violet? It is cruel to tell you to pick just one, so which comes to mind first?
Kenton

I have finally been able to take inventory of what I still have and come up with a "Wish List":
The named violets are lost are: Looking Glass, Ozio, Garden Party, Boreale, Starry Night Blue, RD's Gleam, Rosie Ruffles, Special Treat, Ultra Violet "Meteor", Ultra Violet "Dusk", Ultra Violet "Saturn", and Whirligig
ON MY WISH LIST:
~*~ANY~*~ Chimera (Oh Violet_Treasure, "Angel's Petticoats" is AWESOME!!)
~*~ANY*~* Green
~*~ANY*~* Yellow
~*~ANY*~* variegated leaf variety
~*~ANY *~*"Wrangler's" series
~*~ANY*~* "Apache" series
I particularly love anything heavily edged, or anything "splattered" (lots of fantasy). Things like Royal Commotion, Patchwork Blue, Marina, Sea Drift, Lavander Magic, Frosty Frolic, Vintage Lace to name a few. I'm really not picky and 'no-named' are just as lovely as named in my book.
Oh and....I have tried THREE TIMES to grow "Apache Redcoats" from leaves.....and darned if I didn't loose it every time! =( I like the Apache series and would love to try Redcoasts for a 4th time (hey, if nothing else, I'm persistant!!)
I'm SO GLAD I caved and joined the trade!! I'm always ready for spring so I can start planting ...but THIS SPRING will be especially exciting!!
BETSY
**edited to add "Wranglers" series and "Apache" series to my wish list! ;O)

Well I sent Ultra Violet plants out to two different people . Who knows maybe they are your secret pal :)) I'm going to ask Mom for two more leaves of Looking Glass . She gave me 2 I killed them :((. Maybe I can grow you a baby. Oh I have a few Ultra violet Dusk babies if you don't get one.
"Angel's Petticoats" yes I just love it ! But the thing is lots of these plants are impossible to find. That's why I say if you find and get a rare one it's good to share with friends :)) Plus always put a leaf or two down of each plant you have. It's for insurance if anything ever happens to the Mom plant !
Hope you get a super super box Betty ! You deserve it ! Allison
This trade is now closed, and I don't want to complicate the logistics by trying to add more people to the signup list. If anyone wants to organize another trade of this kind for spring, of course that would be fine. But this trade is closed.
I'm glad the secret EB trade has sparked so much interest in propagating this winter and so much discussion of wish lists etc.... I think we will have an absolute spring trading frenzy in this forum!
Has everyone put and or up-dated their Spring Easter Bunny swap list ??
Allison,
Thanks for the reminder. I have been looking at the different companies online to see what I might like. Too many to name. What does catch my eye is the variegated foliage and bi-colors, mini and frilly is a plus. I would be happy with any new violet. Linda
How's everyone doing ? Have you put some leaves down for Secret Easter Bunny sawp Buddy :)
I'd love ot here from everyone, see and hear about your methods of growing babies ! Does anyone need help ? Were all here to help each other .
~~~BUMP~~~
It looks like not everyone has put out a wish list for the trade!!! :o)
I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and holiday time..... I had some wonderful family time, lots (!) of good food, and not complaining, time off work! Now it's time to start following up on my pending seed trades, my AV stuff, and to plant some special seeds I've received. And I got a seed heat mat from Santa/Hubby!
So.... let's finish up those wish lists. I know there was another post as well about the trade/wish lists too.
Happy New Year to all!
Sanna
I have put leaves donw for the following minis: Azurite & Blackfoot- I have some plants coming from Bluebird - being mailed today so I will also put down leaves for standards Rebel's Camile & 2 others that I can't recall at this time, but will post.
I am looking for varigated foliage, standards. I would love Pow Wow, but I am not picky. I love all of them.
Sanna nice to see you ! Santa was good to you :))
Yes please everyone wish away...put everything you dream of, up-date your list make them longer ! I heard the Easter Bunny is giving away big baskets this year !
Happy New Year to you Sanna and everyone !
April your doing great growing ! Bluebird has awesome plants ! I have several plants coming from them too ! Can't wait to see what we get ! FUN ! FUN ! Allison
I got a message from them today and instead of mailing next month they are mailing today- I am so excited! They did a substitute on one of mine so I will have a surprise. Will absolutely put down leaves.
Thanks Allison.
Yes I ordered begin/middle December but it was too cold. I told them to wait until New Years if they wanted. No rush ! I have some plants being shipped from another vendor tomorrow too ! I can't wait !
Bluebird always sends a a free plant and or leaves ! I like ordering from them it's nice and easy system and their plants are wonderful and great service ! Let us know what you get ! Allison
Everyone should consider adding your vendor feedback to the Garden Watchdog files http://davesgarden.com/gwd/advanced.php?category=71&submit=Go
That way we can all benefit from who are good sources for plants, leaves, supplies etc. OR if there is a vendor who is not listed, then submit the vendor for the files. Then leave feedback once the vendor is approved.
For our AV sticky, it would be helpful too as I'll point folks to the GWD link for the vendors.
Good Morning, it's come to my attention by others some have not posted a wish list to help out their Secret Easter Bunny Sawp buddy :))
" This is for first swap" If you could please take a moment to help us out and post your wish list or up-date them if you want too ! Thanks ! Allison
I know there are those who haven't posted a wish list because they love every AV they've ever seen and they like to be surprised.... If this is you, please post to say just that, so your secret EB isn't left hanging!
Remember, a "wish list" doesn't have to be specific varieties, it can be "love minis" or "hate pink." And you can use specific varieties on somebody's wish list to give you a general idea of what they like too... they may know the name of one double purple standard that they'd love, and you may have a different double purple standard that they'd love even more but have never seen.
I know I need to go through my swap list after the holidays and see who we're still lacking a wish list from... If you haven't been able to find any information about your person's preferences, please Dmail me (do not post here with your secret buddy's name!), and I will give them a nudge.
Thanks!
And I hope everyone enjoyed a Very Merry Christmas! I know you were all in my thoughts over the holiday, and you'll be in my wishes also for a Very Happy 2006 -- filled with good health, wonderful friends, and lovely violets that just can't stop blooming!
Hello!
I hope everyone had a great holiday! I am so glad it is over and "normal" life can start again. I just wanted my secret bunny to know that i love all violets and would be happy with anything! I had a round of surgeries last year and my violets got no attention and i lost all but about 3 so anything would be great. Thanks to Betsy i have a great collection going again and then critter sent me some also so my collection is growing and growing! I grow houseplant bonsai and i under plant with AV (i hate bare ground) I don't care if named or not just healthy.
I have been hopping around and i think my secret bunny will be very happy
George
I'm another one that likes anything.So thats my list,anything pretty!
