Sarv when you store your bulbs look at them two or so weeks after you store them and again in another two and trim off any tubers that may be affected by the cold to avoid rotting the whole bunch in case some may have been damaged. The ones underneath touching the ground should be ok even if those on the top got a little damage. My experience has been if they suffer from freezing they will show pretty soon. When I dig my bulbs which I havent done for two years I like to leave them in the ground untill they are thourgly dead but before we have a hard freeze. Then I dig only what I can cut up and store in one day so they don.t lay around to long. Good luck. Ernie
Coffee and...Part 47...! :-D
Oh Ernie!!! You should *never* have shown us your Dahlias! (Do we know where you live??? LOL) Gorgeous! Absolutely gorgeous! And thanks for the tip on digging the tubers/bulbs. I've done the same as Sarv on several occasions. It's nice to know what to look for ... and when! (I don't remember seeing you in here before. If you have been...I apologize for not remembering...if not... WELCOME to kitchen!)
Molly...I'm so happy to hear from you. Sorry things aren't working out exactly right at the moment...but it sounds like a temporary setback. I'm glad the weather is cooperating with and for you and am hoping you'll be able to get up to the property soon. We're all thinking of you!
Hello to everyone! I'm reading the thread each time it's updated on my list...but I've gotten myself into a project of sots. More like literally "Sorting". I've been working on trying to get photos organized so I can at least *find* some of the things I like to look at. And of course, that means running into things I haven't seen for years...and that means I *have* to stop and look, and remember, and...and...and.......
It's not a very good excuse, LOL, but it's the only one I have right now. hehehe
Back to the project.
Have a GREAT day!
~julie~
Hey thanks for the dahlia info - I went out and checked them and they aren't mushy, so hopefully I avoided disaster!! I'll leave them out today and put them away tomorrow. We've had major excitement here already today!!
I got a call 8 ish (could be 7ish tho with the time change LOL) from youngest DS - he said 'hey mom, tell dad to get his butt down here in the woods - I SHOT A DEER!!! DH was still in the sack, so DS came up - he had a grin from ear to ear - I was so happy for him. The brought it up and hung it in the barn and skinned it. I couldn't be there as that kind of stuff grosses me out. He came to the house covered in blood (hit an artery he said) He quickly shucked off his clothes and I have them in the washer. I knew if he took them home, they wouldn't get done till next week!
Okus- when I went for my yearly physical the doc said -next year I think you will need thyroid meds- so you are probably right - I don't go in until next July tho - and unless I feel really crappy, I'll wait until then. I've never had a ton of energy my whole life... LOL Phew just reading that about the time with with grandkids made me tired - kick back and put your feet up - you deserve a big rest!!
M5- I know I am a push over....have been all my life. I always want people to have a good time and I will work myself to the bone to make sure. Made the dip for my sis (oh is it good too!) Made a double batch of cream puffs, some mini cheese cakes, and the dip. Hope that is enough.
Maria, Dr. Sue says go to the pound and pick yourself up a little doggie- I guarantee you will fall in love with it.
Eweed- welcome to the gab fest!! Ahhh a man after my heart if he loves dahlias too!!! Now we want to hear all about yourself and your family. Bal - will welcome you too (our other male buddy)
Why Ernie, how nice to see you here LOL welcome !! And stay a while
Hi everybody am off to see my daughter in the city, too nice a day to stay in, don't you think?
Talk to you later,
Maria
Sarv, Yes, you can leave the tubers outside but once it looks like it going to do a good freeze, get them inside! A dahlia tuber farm ended up losing most of their tubers last year due to leaving them out in the field while they were gone for a few days for vacation. Of course, that was the only time we had a horrible freeze. So cut off the foilage, let them sit on top of the ground in non-freezing weather and then you can bring them into the garage while they cure more before you put them away in storage.
MOLLY, am so glad to hear from you. Keep hanging in there and hope you get to your new place soon.
Food. I would love some right now. Haven't had much choices on good food lately.
Okus, hope all goes well with your family.
Need to head home now, so later all.
Carol (DR)
DR - how 'bout lemon pepper roasted chicken? It's ready to go on the table, but if you can hold off a bit, there will be herbed rice and green beans to go with it.
This is a *beautiful* day!!!!!!
Hello to all and I wish you a fun and exciting interlude before we get side tracked on the cold stuff.
No doggies fro me, every body, Always had Collies or Irish setters lol
do you really think I would like a little dog, yes, I would but onlyof it is a baby that will grow up to be big, LOL, perhaps one of these days after I won't travel anymore.
Sheesh, Sue, can't stand having a deer shot, never mind seeing a dead one!
Ginny chicken sounds great and the rest that goes with it, yum , I can wait, LOL
Sweetie Maria - would ya prefer fresh fruit or green salad, cornbread or french? I can't make up my mind so help me out here!
lol, Giini, fresh fruit and corn bread. love it!
tgif, even I could not choose between those... love them all!
@#$%^ man who was working for my landlord recently was doing some elec work on the wires overhead in my pantry and apparently knocked off a jar of something that broke... and didn't tell me. Nor did he get up all the glass chunks. So yesterday I went in there barefoot and slashed the ball of my foot, not enough for stitches, but it's painful to walk.
My handyman was here 2 hours today and got all the rest of my stuff dug and potted, plus TB iris and oriental lilies in mesh bags. All ready to pack mid-week for their trip to FL. Sure wish Molly was going to be at her new place sooner because I know she'd take better care of plants than my sister who is a non-gardener.
Ernie...that's quite a garden bed you have there. Would you mind telling me about how far apart you have those planted? Next year will be the first year I'll be putting mine in the ground. So far, I've only had containers (except for the dwarf border types.) I really love the fullness of your beds.
Carol (dr)...meant to tell you before I'm happy to hear you DF is doing better. Sorry about the computer withdrawal you're dealing with...hope it won't last long.
~julie~
darius - keep that cut clean!!!! You don't need to be one-footed right now. I'm sure things will come together in time to keep your plants safe. Plants can be incredibly patience when they need to be - just waiting for their tender, loving "mama" to come take them by the hand and read them a story. I am sure all this shitfing around you and Molly are going through is going to put both of you on the best of forward tracks. Just hang in there, and stay healthy!
Fruit (apple, banana, grapes in fruit syrup) and cornbread ( NO SUGAR!!!!!!!!) it is. I make a very simple version of cornbread. Usually I do 1/2 amounts , but for all of ya'll coming, I'll do extra. Warning - the grapes are the big Globes and I might have missed a seed or two. ( I suddenly realized - I don't have any desert! The wonderful fat free things that ya'll put out for us won't do. I am desparately trying to put weight ON hubby, not take it off!) I, on the otherhand, will take whatever anyone offers - the tastier and fatter freer, the better. I saw something, somewhere, about cinnamon ice cream, and would really like to see more - like "how to".
Carol - prayers for your DFs continued improvement. It is a trying time for you, but so far, it looks wonderfully positive.
ernie - how come all your dahlias are standing up so tall and beautiful, when mine, while they do bloom - some- all the blooms are laid out flat on the ground?!!! I can see from your pics, yours get a *lot* more sun than mine, so I guess that is probably a biggie. Yours are just beautiful! Thanks for the pics.
sarv - we know you're a pushover - that's why we love ya so! We can teach you to roll over, fetch or whatever, and you are so sweet and loving, you'll do it. Please don't ever change that sweet nature - BUT, make room for yourself somewhere in there!
okus, M5 and all the others that I can't remember if you were on this thread or one of a dozen others - love ya all
ginni

This is my mom's recipe. I love to make this with warm pie.
Cinnamon Ice Cream
12 egg yolks
1 tbs Cinnamon
1 cup Sugar
1 qt Heavy cream
2 tsp Vanilla extract
pinch salt
Combine the egg yolks, cinnamon and sugar in a bowl. Whip until thick and light. Scald the milk and gradually beat into the egg mixute to temper. Heat over a hot water bath or in a double boiler, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon. Immediately remove from the heat. Stir in the cold cream to stop the cooking. Add the vanilla and the salt. Chill the mixture thoroughly and freeze in an ice cream maker according to manufacturers directions. Makes 2 quarts.
Yummy, Yummy, Yummy
Casey, sounds yummy. I love homemade ice cream!
tgif, thanks... I've cleaned the wound with peroxide and now have it bandaged with some antiseptic cream. Should have done that last night.
Julie ty but you should have seen them before my health started a down hill sprial I haven't dug these in two years playing a bit of russian rouletthere I know and I have lost some really nice ones. Need to dig at least a few this year thought because this may be the year we get a real winter again. These are planted in rows 5 feet apart with the bulbs 18 inches in the row I do not stake them nor do I use fertilizer at all for to do so encourages vegatative growth that hides the flowers and makes the bulbs more prone to spoiling in storage. If one wishes to use fertilixer it needs to be very low in nitrogen and applie early in the season. Wh en I was really gung ho I prestarted the bulbs in a mix of sand and peat to break their dormanacy and get flowers in June but no more just to many to do and to much energy.
Daisy ruffels I cut my tubers the same day I dig them sounds like you cut in the spring do you.?
This picture should show you why I have slowed down with the D flowers lol Ernie
Darius watch that cut really close three weeks ago I cut my leg paramedics fire men and a horde of volunteer helpers got seven stiches and still got a nasty infection. So keep a close eye the circulation down there is not the best for warding off infections . Ernie
Thanks, Ernie. I know infections where circulation is less than optimal can be a real problem.
With al l that knowledge, Ernie, you better watch out , you'll have a bevy of women after you, :-))))
Maria
Not to change the subject... But...
I believe tears are cathartic, and I sure expended a lot of them this afternoon watching (again) the movie Pay it Forward. Always leaves me feeling cleansed, renewed, optimistic and a little sad all at the same time.
Darius, what next? You need a care taker!
Never heard of that movie
Maria
I believe in the entire concept of pay it forward Darius.
Molly
I love that movie. My kids attend the HS school that it was filmed at here. The school wasn't open when they did the movie. I too believe in the entire concept of Pay it Forward.
Casey
Darius, hope your foot is feeling better soon. Molly is going to need you in tip top shape. LOL
Molly, it is so nice to see you posting. Take care
Pay it forward is one of my favorites! It came out right after I had my son though so ALOT of tears here too.
Pay it forward concept is beautiful we should all try it!!!
Oh Darius thank you for bringing that back to the front of my mind --- great film!
Anne
I had a reply all set and did something stupid and lost it. Don't know what key I hit, but it cleared the message window. Anybody know of any sort of undo when that happens?
I said, I think, how nice it was to hear from Molly. Gald you have a generator and hope all gets sorted out with your property.
I expressed surprise at the number of you who were up in the middle of the night. Is it contageous ? Maybe too much Coffee?
Maria, you sounded bright this morning. Hopw you are still feeling better. The concert this afternoon went well.
sarv - hope you got all the food sorted out for the gala.
I'm still reading early morning comments; so might be more commentary later.
okus - how lucky DS and DIL are you have you. And I'm sure you enjoyed the visit with grandkids even if it was rather sudden.
darius - take care of the cut. Are your tetanus shots up to date?
I bet there are several new messages while I was writing this ... it's pretty hopeless trying to stay caught up.
It was a gorgeous weekend here and I had enough to do that I didn't have a chance to get into the garden at all. Still have a pile of that new dirt to spread out in the veggie garden. And leaves are dropping like crazy. We've had enough frost to finish off several tender plants that were previously protected by the leaves on trees. They started working on the retaining wall around my new garden and should finish it off tomorrow, but I'm not happy with the capping stones. Hope they are temporarily in place and will be cut tomorrow. They've left triangular spaces where the stone round the garden. I will have a chat with them tomorrow.
Ann
Thanks, Ann, almost feel as good as new, ah, the magic of medicine, but still tire easely.
Now wonder what tht movie is all about
Maria
Maria,
Take a look here. It will give you an idea. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0223897/plotsummary
Molly
Molly, Thanks for posting the link for Maria. It's a favorite movie and I actually bought a used copy on Amazon, along with The Postman and a few others. I like "feel good" movies.
this is the second time I am posting this, forget to send it lol guess I am still not well enough in my brain anyway.
Inany case, Molly, thanks a lot for the info. will chech netflex to see if they have it, sounds like a great movie.
Maria
I know there is somthing the matter with me, I just opened a bag o f chocolates that is for tomorrow night and ate some of it, don't even care for chocolate, never have done before but always had to hide it so DH could not devour them before the kids came lol
Maria
awww Maria enjoy the chocolate and try to stay well.
You are just fine to let it out here all he funnies!!!
I f start liking chocolate I might put on a couple of lbs. but don't think I really need to, lol
Maria
I don't think I told you what a nice visit I had with my daughter in the city, she was working in her garden, it was such a wonderful day to do just that, traffic was awfull, especially those sunday drivers they go 30 miles an hour in a 50 miles zone.
She and I went for a long walk, looking at every bodies garden in that very nice and quiet neighborhood , Cynthia's house is from the late 20's an arts and craft style , very interesting bungalow architecture. Perfect for her and husband, therr son lives near Philadelphia now where he is dean of admission at Haverton college, his daughter is my great grandchild, they will be celebrating Thanksgiving with us, looking forward to this
Guess the chocolate is my dinner tonight, filled me right up. Of course don't want to forget Ginni's dinner earlier lol
Maria
I haven't seen "Pay It Forward" yet either, but I get the concept. Read about it when I was just a youngster - about 12 or so, when I read "Magnificent Obsession" by Loyd C Douglas. Even at that age I could see why it would work if we all did it.
Ernie, your flowers are as beautifully obedient as your vegetables. All behaving as they should. It's amazing how much of our lives our gardens consume. And the doggies? have they been helping? Is Jenny still going to work with you?
Another day I didn't do anything worth relating. I really am getting to be a stick in the rut lady. Gotta do something about that. I lurk, but have Nowt to add.
~Blooms
Maria, Chocolate does not a dinner make. Have a bowl of oatmeal before you get ready for bed. Your tummy will thank you in the middle of the night. Honest. As a chocohalic I speak from experience.
I love the sound of 'bungalow architecture' - and imagine a great grandchild of your own. I know you've mentioned it before but tonite it struck me as a wonder. A little bit of you running around, now that's a happy thought to barricade against the dark.
Besides, chocolate has caffeine in it! Might be almost as effective as coffee...
Ann
Well, if it isn't one *#&$* thing, it's another. Reached under the kitchen sink to get something, and there was a lot of water.....our disposal decided to die, and it looks like a replacement is in order. Can't even read the name of the maker on this one, but I'll guarantee it's a cheapo because our builder cut corners in places that are hard to spot until they fail. To wit: the septic pump. Good thing I store all my aerosol stuff upside down so the plastic caps are on the bottom, no rust marks that way. Sheeeesh!! Sounds like a trip to Sears or Home Depot tomorrow.
Now that I've got that off my chest, Hello to Eweed and any other newbies who've decided to sit and have a chat with us. Your dahlias are beautiful. I like to see full gardens, and have been working towards that since we built here 5 years ago. Sure takes a long time, especially since I've annihilated quite a few sturdy perennials that are supposed to survive under black walnut trees. They didn't. Even the barberry croaked.
Had visitors this afternoon but they didn't stay long, DH's stepdad and his wife brought that junk vehicle over here, which will sit here until the idiot brother comes to get it. I told his dad it better be sooner rather than later because I'm one digit away from calling a tow truck.
Otherwise it was an exceptional fall day. Leaves are not as colorful this year, due to our drought, and they are falling mighty fast. I pulled down my moonflower which got frosted pretty good the last three nights....pulled isn't a good description, I had to cut through the vines in about fifty places to get it down. There were a lot of seed pods, but they are still very green. Anyone have experience saving them? I picked off quite a few more morning glory seeds too if there is anyone else who wants any.
Dutch apple pie on the counter for anyone with room for dessert, and there's butter pecan ice cream if you like it ala mode...I always do, altho my sweet mom always wanted a nice chunk of sharp cheddar with hers. She always said "apple pie without the cheese it like a kiss without the squeeze!" I picked up Honey Crisp apples the other day because they had free samples of them, and some nice aged cheddar alongside....I cruised that aisle three times. Yummy. Then I felt guilty so I had to buy some!!
Well, I better go see if DH is still stuck under the sink....he's not happy right now....we could have gotten a big discount on a disposal when I bought the dishwasher but I didn't need one then.........should have gotten it anyway. 20/20 hindsight at work again.
sleep tight all, esp. Maria and Sarv, and Darius, take care of that cut, that's a hard spot to heal. Stupid guy, leaving you with a mess like that. And, oh yeah, I loved Pay It Forward, but it leaves me in tears too. Hello to everyone else, I hope you had a nice day!
This message was edited Oct 30, 2005 7:56 PM
Have to remember that., Sheila, 'apple pie with out cheese is like a kiss without a squeeze' lol can think of a few more things what a kiss is without a squeeze' would do the same thing, have that messy truck towed away, probably would have already done it!
Actually, Blooms, I am very seldom hungry. have to remind myself to eat some thing just because it is normal to eat lol
Funny thing, Ann, coffee has never kept me awake, it is my brain going around and around thinking and worrying about many things, coffee or no coffee, thank goodness for my new sleeping medicine.
And, yes, Ernie I do not think you can do anything wrong growing things
