Session #45 (Started Oct. 24, 2005)
Lurkers are cordially invited to join in any time...
Hi everyone! I spent the day outside cutting down about 200 Canna stalks. They hadn't been killed by the frost yet...but they *had* to come down. :-(
MG...I understand about the squirrel 'for supper'. I grew up in OKLA and we did the froglegs, squirrel, drum (fish :-~YUK!), rattlesnake, and the occasional rabbit. To this day, I hate the thought of the froglegs jumping out of the pan (Mama forgot to cut the tendons...euuuuuu...making myself a bit sick on this topic. Thanks but I'll stick to chicken without bones because I don't have to think of it as an animal. LOL (OK so I'm the *chicken* hehehe)
~julie~
Me too Darius!
I enjoyed the bidding war BTW, I'd join in but we are about to be homeless too for a while. In our case the builder will be providing shelter of some sort while they try and sort out our foundation and water issues. So I don't have a panic just no room to "swing a cat" - (pun intended )
Cats and Dogs -The old ones are allowed to be cantankerous - age has its priviledges - but they are very precious when they are old aren't they?
I just got this photo of my old boy - he's 13 now and obviously still very fit and happy with my friend in the UK . I do miss him though.

Good Morning!! Slept half way decent last night - thank goodness. Could it be that mug of hot apple cider I downed before bed??
Back to the work out joint this morning then to get the hair cut. Had a good cut last time, so if history repeats itself, this one will be a dud. Need to add some new highlights - it's getting pretty dull looking.
Cloudy and cool again - the say 'rain' tomorrow. There has been no rain here for so long, gardens are dust.
Nothing much of news here- kinda dull in fact! Hope all is well with all of you! Sue
Good morning,
wow - another thread already.
Julie - do you dig up all your Canna? I thought I had a lot, but nowhere near 200. I've reached a point where I leave half or more in the ground and they die over the winter, but I don't have space to store them all. Mostly I don't have exciting varieties though.
I've tentatively identified the rose as a Chicago Peace Rose. The final air-brushed pic is posted on the Rose Forum - http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/553274/
Gotta go to Aquafit. More later.
Ann
Good Morning Every body!
Did not sleep worth a hoot last night finally did in the wee hours and woke up at about 9:30 and don't feel so hot right now. I think I need to get some better sleeping pills must be getting used to the ones I am taking now.
There is a terrific storm out there am surprised we still have electricity since the wind is howling with tons of rain, will it ever stop?
Don't understand what this thing is about member page and what I am suppose to do, perhaps some one can explain it a little better to me?
See you later
Maria
Good morning GOBs and GOBettes. oO/~It's a wonderful day in the neighbourhood, a wonderful day in the neighbourhood....would you be my, would you be my, would you be my neighbour?!!oO/~ I can't believe how wonderfully chatty each of you are. It's so nice reading all the posts and catching up with each of your lives. Please know you all give me such a fabulous warm feeling knowing there are folks "out there" with problems, solutions, resolutions, chores, hobbies, interests, family concerns, tastes, and worries so much like my own. It's like a virtual family in here! Thank you for your presence!!! Each of you are a blessing :-)
Hubby went back to work this morning after being off the past 4 days. He took Friday and Monday off to work on our master bathroom. He's stripped it bare, removed everything except the wallboard (though he's sanded off the old texture) in preparation for a revamp. He's going to tile the floor, put up wainscoting and chair rail as well as a new Pullman and sink top and fixtures and exhaust fan. Mind you, this WC is very small, only 30 square feet, so we shant get too awfully wild. He's also going to put up crown molding and a new window casing and door casing and change the door as well. We picked out the new Pullman and wall cabinet for linens that will hang above the toidy, it's all in maple and I can't wait to see it when it's in. Hopefully while I'm at work this weekend, he will get the tile put down and be able to start on the waincoting. I'm doing all the painting once it gets to that point. Yeehaw! * Babs has happy feet!!!*
Without enumerating all the names and problems, please allow me to say, I've made up a separate prayer list for those of you in here who have mentioned problems, health issues, aggravations, etc. I hope you don't mind, but I've set aside a few minutes each day to pray for those in DG who may need a little extra help. Many blessings on all and please, remember always, tell your family and friends you love them, life can change in an instant and you can't regain those moments you could have told them you love them once they are gone. I work in an ER, I see it every shift I work. I promise myself each day to touch, and love my family and friends each time I see them. I see the anguish people live with because they had a cross word or a silly misunderstanding that didn't get resolved and their loved one is gone before they can do anything about it. Please, don't go to bed angry or with hard feelings against your spouse and if you have a tiff, put it to rights. If you have hard feelings with a sibling, then either work it out or cast it aside. You are the one who has to live with whatever happens in the future and if the other party is not willing to compromise or come to some agreement, then cast that situation adrift from your life. You may never resolve the issue, but you can resolve your feelings about it. It's your attitude that carries you through your life and it's up to you what attitude you take. I try hard to live by these words and I'll post them here for you.
ATTITUDES:
I firmly believe that the longer I live, the more I realize the impact of ATTITUDE on life. Attitude to me is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think, or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company, a church, a home. The remarkable thing is you have a choice every day regarding the attitude you will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past. We cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can change is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with You. You are in charge of your attitudes!
I WILL TRY TO:
Be kind, Speak gently, Think deeply, Show humility, Smile often, Show compassion, Be appreciative, Inspire someone, Love much, Listen well, Give freely, Work hard, Take initiative, Act decisively, Pay promptly and take my vitamins every day.
~Babs~
AWWWW there is that sweet cleo again
Daisy -- my screen name is hthopus !
In the middle of 7 different rainy day clean out closets etc... projects and said I would pop into DG for a minute-- OK now 1 1/2 later gonna get back to some work.
Great day to all
Mags
Good words/thoughts, Babs!
I hear you, Babs, it has always been about attitudes that have been disappointing to me about people, not what they look llike not what the have or not have not what their opnion is about issues, it is about their attitudes that are not pleasant to accept life as it is, not make it worse but make it better.
Maria
Thanks Babs, life is way to short. We may be the grace that touches some peoples lives, I try so hard to remember that.
Joy.......and thanks for the prayers, prayer can be such a time of cleansing and release.
Babs, Thanks for important reminders. That sounds llike quite a reno you've got going on.
Maria - hope you get through the storm OK. It's raining here, but I don't think it's related to Wilma. It's just yucky cold rain like we've had too much of this autumn. Oh well, time to work inside, I guess.
I got the web page for 2005 garden done. Need to do a page on my garden expansion and make some changes to other pages before I upload them all.
We've hired my succesor at the Food Cupboard and he want to start coming in to familiarize himself with the place. He will start to work WITH me in mid-December and take over completely at the end of January. And he seems perfect. We spent a week trying to find some warts and couldn't.
sarv, if the cider works go for it. Hope your hair cut works out OK. I've taken to tipping my hairdresser based on whether I liked the LAST haircut. He's cut my hair since 1977 and it's occasionally love-hate, but he generally does a good job on my thick, course, wiry hair. Not everyone can. He had back surgery last summer and someone else in his shop cut it - badly. A week later I was so shaggy I called them and two weeks later I was back for a fix. This time I paid 75% of the regular cost (expensive) and practically got scalped. The worst thing was my regular hairdresser was back at work when I went in for the "fix". If I'd known that , I'd have swallowed the extra money and had him fix it properly. Happy to say that he did seem to be able to fix the mess with one haircut and I've mostly been able to just air-dry it after Aquafit. (Not much longer though as I approach my next cut).
Ann
LOL, Ann... I took the scissors to my own hair yesterday. Now it needs a professional cut to fix it but it will have to wait a month!
Well, just back from getting my flu shot. Boy did it hurt, and bled, they even had to put a bandaid on it. Think the lady was a blacksmith, instead of a nurse!!
Julie, all the talk about eating the wildlife, since I have mental images when trying to eat rabbit, squirrel, turtle, frog legs and suck, I just don't try anymore. I have learned to eat frog legs, but that process took somewhere around 7-8 tries. Just the mental image of a big green frog, going in my mouth UGGH
Morning Gayle, I think that husbands have to be tuned up about every 2-3 months, just like a car, they operate better, after a good heart-to-heart. LOL. I agree the testerone issue would make you a rich woman.
Okus, loved your 13 year old furbie. So you had to leave him? That is sad. When I am away from home for a few days, and someone is sitting my Mr. B. I call to talk to him. He really knows who is on the phone as DGD calls him every week. He knows the voice, but can't figure out why he can't see them!!
Carat, your dog in the swimming pool. I had a friend who had a cocker, and a pool, and he got so many ear infections that when they went to work they had to cover the pool, so he couldn't get in it. Only allowed to swim when they were home!!
Sarv, it is sort of rainy and gloomy here today. I have some cooking that I have to do, so everything I do today will be inside stuff.
Babs, thanks for those thoughts. Every once in awhile, we all need to be remined that we need to keep our words sweet, as we may have to eat them. That sounds like a major redo. Hope it goes well and quickly. Nothing worse than construction debris, to walk through. Been there done that (several times) when we were in our old house. We could have build 3 houses for the amount of money we spent on improvements to that one.
Viola Ann, Good news about your successor. It is hard to turn over the reins to someone else, until you know that they are capable. I went through that before I retired. Almost like handing over a baby, you want to make sure that they are going to do a good job. Hair cuts used to be a major trauma maker for me, until I found my present hairdresser. I have been going to her for 12years, and she is a gem. So happy go lucky, and sort of strikes you as a nut, the first time you meet her, but very competent. Sure hope she stays in business for awhile.
Well, off to do some cooking. I'm like Babs today, I have happy feet!! Can't wait until DS gets here.
Will check in later.
Well....I came in with the idea of sitting for a while and enjoying my coffee and reading all the conversation. BUT DH has other ideas. He's building me a new HUGE birdfeeder for my CIB (Center Island Bed)...and evidently needs me to help dig the post hole. LOL
~julie~
OH! He bought me a new cordless drill for our anniversary! The *first* useful thing I've ever gotten!
Gotta run!
HI EVERYONE!!
Hi Gobs, it's a beautiful fall day and I'm gonna spend it outside. Just had my bowl of oatmeal and vitamins and am ready to take on those shaggy looking flower beds. Rain is forecast for tomorrow and I will be gone all day anyhow so have to get lots of clean up done today.
Babs, thanks for that nice piece on attitudes. It's something we all need to print out and stick up on the referigerator where it will be handy to read. Your bathroom face lift sounds great. Be sure to show us some pictures.
Darius, now you have to live with the effects of cutting your own hair. How many times in your life have you done this? :-) It's something all kids (and some adults) do, always thinking that a snip here and a snip there will make it better. Thankfully it was scissors and not electric clippers. I just remembered a haircut my brother in law gave to my hubby many years ago while they were watching Sea Hunt on tv. BIL was trying to swim but it was clippers not flippers. Oops. The haircut got a lot shorter after that to try to hide the mistake.
I'm wasting daylight sitting here yackity yacking. See you later.
Good afternoon GOBs and GOBettes! It's a beautiful day out here. Chilly but the sun is shining. I'm going to dig the cannas today - they're all froze now.
Best news of all - got the MRI results on Dan (16 yr. old son with migraines) and all that's in there is brains, (we think! LOL) nothing nasty! What a relief and answer to prayer... Thurs. we still need to go to the opthalmologist to make sure his specs are the right strength and not triggering the migraines. Dr is just giving him meds to take when he feels one coming on. Sure wish I hadn't passed that gene on to him, he's already had to deal with two eye surgeries, another gene from my side. Rats!
We also have to go sign papers for a home improvement loan this afternoon so we can finish the rest of the rooms in this house and the front porch overhaul.
Have a good day all!
Great news !!!!!!
Yay for you, Kooger! (for Son AND house!)
I just looked at the weather online (don't get the local weather on the Dish) and they are calling for frost tonight. Rats.... I have lots of tender plants to still bring in and not much place to put them. Plus, it's raining and in the low 40's and I DO NOT want to be out in it!
Mary, I have cut my own hair for many years.... only twice with disastrous results! That only happens when I'm in a bad mood, LOL.
Kooger! That's super news on the MRI...but don't be too ecstatic just yet...those brains don't seem stay in there for long. hehehe
~julie~
Babs, thanks for the wonderful words and the reminders of who we all should be. I try to be the best person I can each day. And if I do faulter, I remind myself that I am human not perfect and that tomorrow is a brand new day.
Kooger, I am so glad to hear the MRI results were good. I know I looked at DD's and ask the doctor is her brain shriveled because she doesn't use it to its fullest potential? He just laughed and said its a teenager defect.
Cutting your own hair ladies. I can't see to find my glasses, I have to swint my eyes to read the fine print and some of you have scissors in your hands aimed at your head. Not I. I would medical attention.
Mary glad to hear at least your weather is nice. Its rainy and cool here. Strange for us. Kind of fits my mood today. I have the blahs for some reason. I was thinking of making stew for dinner to help it go away.
Julie, DH got me a gift certificate a few years back for Sears because he couldn't decide which I would rather have a necklace or earrings. I went and came home with a rotozip and he flipped. He never thought I serious when I would say I wanted some power tool. I now own quite a few. Love them.
Defo, I have a cocker that won't go near water and she is suppose to be a water dog. Cleo is akita-chow and poodle and none are real water loving breeds and she will lay on the first step of the pool all day in the summer if she can. She will only use the steps to get in and out. I get so worried with the flu bug. Neither me or my oldest son can take the flu shot. We have both tried twice and both times ended up in the emergency room wishing we only had the flu.
Oh, my AOL is CARAT414.
Hope everyone is having a great day. Despite the bad weather for some of you.
Casey
Hi everyone- gosh have I had a fun day. Went to the work out center, got a hair cut (another good one) and because I had referred a friend, got my brows waxed for FREE!! Went with another friend to pick out new carpeting (she is my very best friend - if something bad has happened- it has happened to her) She is such a giving person and doesn't have a pot to pee in. I love her dearly. Anyhow after the carpeting, we went to lunch, then to get her a turkey roaster just like mine. We laugh and laugh together. Just got home in time for HD to walk in the door. I had to listen to him grouse for a few minutes about his stupid brother.
Babs- I try always be a 'good' person. I do go to bed mad tho. Living with the same man for 37yrs, how can you not be mad!! I'll need to work on that. I seldom am upset for long at anyone tho - life is too short to waste time on that. However I do carry grudges.....for a long time too (my major downfall...) I bet you see a lot of sadness working where you do. But there must be happiness too!!
Darius- I used to cut my hair all the time and in fact when things get not looking right, I still whack away at it. But I always admit to my beautician.... That is my one extravagance - going to get my hair cut (I color it myself tho) I cut everyone elses hair, so I think I deserve that treat!!
kooger- good luck on the migraines. They run in our family too. My sister ends up in the E-room several times a year because of hers. Mine seem to be hormone related and have lessoned as I have gotten older. I used to always get a nasty one at tax time - solved that by having taxes done LOL It's a rotten feeling having those- hope they fine the problem before too long.,
Oops- Mary, I forgot my vitamins- thanks for the comment about your- I'll take mine when I sign off.
Vi - glad you found someone to take over your position that will do well. No one can possibly fill your shoes tho! It is hard to give up power tho isn't it!
Julie - you have how many cannas?? 200 - Oh my gosh... I planted two and they have multiplied. I have had poor results in overwintering. I plan on ordering a ton more from Horn Cannas- ever been to their website?? Mine dried out last winter and not a stinkin thing sprouted and I had over a dozen. Sad news, believe me. I dug them, stuck them in a paper grocery bag. This year I am going to put peat in with them. What do ya think?? Will they make it?
Well, time to put my feet up for a while. Sue
kooger - great news about the MRI. Hope you are able to get to the root of the migraines though.
sarv (Sue) what do you mean give up power? I never had it! The Food Cupboard is REALLY run by the volunteers and anyone in a paid position who thinks otherwise will be firmly put in their place. LOL
As long as one understands that, everyone is happy. ;-) If the ED wants to make changes they'd better be prepared to make the vols think it is THEIR idea. I expect to be back as a volunteer (and I confirmed with my successor that he won't feel threatened). Then I might have some power. LOL At the very least, I can do what I want to and not what something else (city, other agencies, etc.) dictates has to be done by a certain time. I WILL miss the money, though as is typical for a social service agency, it ain't much.
Glad you got a good haircut.
Ann
Kooger! That is terrific news! Now could you please please send me a copy of one of his MRI pictures? I would like to see some proof that teenage boys really do have brains.
Dh and I are still fussing at each other. I like a bumber sticker I saw once, sorry Bal!
All men are idiots...and I married their King!
Chat in an hour!!
I can't believe I didn't "Watch Thread" on this one! I wondered where everyone has been all day!
I got this from a friend and wanted to share with all of you:
National Girlfriend and Sister's Week
I am only as strong as the coffee I drink, the hairspray I use and the friends I have.
To the cool women that have touched my life. Here's to you!
good one Jas!!!!!
I'm back for a few minutes...
Casey, I was *thrilled* when DH actually bought me a drill! I was using his as a 'bulb digger'. LOL I think he might have thought I was going to wear it out.
Sarv...yep! There are about 200 out there. I got most of them cut back yesterday. Dug a few of the 'special' ones this afternoon. I was really surprised at the good growth I got from the Pink Dawn. (I had that one in a large container with pink geraniums and chartreuse sweet potato vine...boy was that a pretty combo. Pink Dawn's bronze leaves really set the colors off.) And yep! I've been to Horn's Canna site. That's where I ordered my new ones from.
Someone called me a 'canna-holic' over in the new forum today. hehehe Can't remember who that was... ;-)
I used to cut my own hair, many years ago...and I was pretty darned good at it too. I was way to cheap (read that poor!) to go to the hairdresser. :-D
Someone here said something about not being able to picture me eating a pie. LOL Why not?? LOL (Sheila...I've looked for that picture and can't find it. Any idea which thread we might have been eating pie in? :-D)
Babs...I love the 'Attitudes'...and wish I'd learned those lessons much earlier in my life. Unfortunately I think I was in my 40's before I realized *I* was in control. ;-)
D.cat...I can't help but LOL when I pass your "frog legs" eating comment. (I've got a mental picture of that happening right now. What a great cartoon!)
HI Joyous, Darius, Mags, Maria, Carol (the English one), Carol (dr), Mary, Robert, and everyone else I know I've missed.
Nearly time for supper here. (Nothing special so I won't share tonight. :-D)
~julie~
JODY!!! THERE you are! (No silly...not the pic! LOL) I love that picture and really love the "I'm as strong as..."
~julie~
Did not post in this thread, forgot, posted in the the one before, lol

darius, is cubital tunnel the same as Radial-Ulnar Nerve Entrapment?
Ok then it is the same thing. Great info there, but I'm not a surgical canidate. Possible complications far outweigh any benifits unless life threatening. Same reason they give me for not fixing my back. :-(((
If we are in the same boat, who is rowing?
10 mins to chat!
mg, one of my aunt's had that surgery, and was worse off.... and for many years.
But there is the rub, you see.
Back is screwed up, can't work. Can't work, applied for SSI. Denied SSI because back is fixable. Back isn't fixable due to bleeding disorder. Bleeding disorder non-life threatening, so no SSI. Back is still screwed up and I can't work.
Pick wall, pound head, repete as needed.
My SIL had the surgery in Feb 2004. She has had 4 surgeries since to help correct problems. Now she has paralyzes in her entire left hand and wrist. During the initial surgery she contracted a staph infection and that landed her a vacation in the hospital for a total of 6 weeks.
My husband has minor problems with tingling in his finger tips at times and at first hearing this she said do not have the surgery unless you feel that losing the use of your hand and wrist are a solution to stop the pain.
Try acupuncture
Love that Picture, Jody, :-))))
Gayle, I am so sorry about your health problems and not be able too something about without unacceptable worse problems that may follow.
Wind is still howling and rain has not gone away, art least I stilll have electricity
Maria
Whatever I posted this morning must have been eaten by the cyberbugs....It wasn't anything important just the usual chatter. Good news on the MRI, DH has done that, and it appears there is nothing wrong with his brain other than obsession with cars, but he is managing well on his daily meds. A bad vision correction can cause problems. I hope they find out for sure what's going on, it's tough to see a kid that age suffer with those headaches.
Ewww tuna casserole for dinner, DH loves it, I just eat something before so I don't have to do more than push it around my plate.
See you in the morning...
has everyone gone to bed already?
Not me.....went to the oral surgeon today and I don't think I will be sleeping tonight
