Sounds as if you have Shining Sumac. Sumacs, once chainsawed, must be treated or they will come back to taunt you ten fold. for just the reasons mentioned by Tammy. Garlon 3 RTU can be painted on to the stump with an elcheapo throw away 2" brush but regular old concentrated BrushBGon should work too. When you cut the tree down, take the edge of the chainsaw and nick the bark to expose a little bit of the cambium. Paint the nicks you created as well as the top of the stump and that should be the end of the Sumac. This also works well for Buckthorn, Tree Of Heaen, and a few others.

Good to know! The berm is about 1/4 acre long and supports the back side of the pond. It's hard to work there with any kind of heavy equipment because it's so steep. Before the burn-off project it was full of rudbeckia and daisies. He thought if he burned it off it would kill the sumacs and make the soil more fertile for the flowers. Live and learn.
On the up side, the color is stunning! The pond is on the back part of the property behind the house, and I can sit and my desk and see the fall colors. It's particulary pretty this morning. We had a good rain last night and the pond is misting. And believe it or not there are two deer out there too. DH took the camera with him on his weekend guys trip, so I'd post a shot.
Live and learn... the story of my life ;)
So right you are! And once we've got it down pat and know what to do we end up at Shady Pines Rest Home.
or in a rubber room....
ss - glad you're enjoying the "upside"! I try to remember that every living thing was put here for some purpose, sometimes it's up to us to figure out what that is, LOL.
I was out of town for work last week. Glad to be back! The wonds last night left us with a lot of yard clean up to do today.
Another member of the more obnoxios but pretty wild-child group out back is the solidago.
I'll opt for Shady Pines instead of the rubber room :)
I've enjoyed everyones posts. At the moment I don't have anything to add.
Agreed, good one Oldseed!
