Offline time is finished!

I've sometimes seen the black highlighting myself here and there. Before the switch...I don't recall if I've seen it since. You'd think that I would know to show him....but nope :)

I'll try to remember to show it to you, Dave. It isn't like Darius's screenshot on mine, but like Paul described.

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

just dmailed darius and took 3 times before it went thru - got the 'page cannot be displayed msg' twice. (just happened here now once - trying again ...

this was on the bottom of the screen - after I hit send on this page and got the 'page cannot be displayed'.......

Paul - that would be great.

TuttiFruiti - I've fixed that issue, I think. Well, all the PF pages are being regenerated again now and this time they should continue to update themselves going forward.

Kooger - it's fixed (I caused it by working on the server, actually. It's a long story).

You can skip the details - it would be miles over my head. :)

Ok, I have studied the odd behavior a little. It seems quite superficial, being changing when you drag a windows over it, highlight text in it, even hit the "PrintScreen" key. It seems to occur on long threads.

I saved this thread ( http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/549339/ ) as an html file and it still occurs when I run the file from my home folder. I trimmed it down to sweezel's post on the 12th (cut off all posts after that with the html file), and it didn't do it; whereas if any of the posts after it were on there it acted up.

Threads on which I've seen it:
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/548154/
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/549339/
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/494720/
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/528730/

Also, it does not occur on Mac-Firefox, Konqueror, Safari, IE, or Windows-Firefox. But it does it on both Ubuntu and Fedora Firefox.

I hope there's some relevant info there. :P

Oh yes, and the screenshots:

Yes, the black on the bottom is a known problem with the HTML. It only happens when threads get extremely long and it's happened since the very early days of DG.

I've never known what caused it. I'm guessing a bug in the browser.

Ah, I see. So, do suppose Darius' problem is the same thing?

I think so.

I just did a little test: I made a table identical to the forums and then wrote some PHP to spit "posts" out in pairs (2 at a time).

I can post 66 pairs of "posts" and it's fine, but when the 67th is added, it then gives the black at the bottom. It's the strangest thing I've ever seen, and I'm convinced that this is not an error in my HTML.

Page with 66 pairs of posts: http://temple.davesgarden.com/~dave/test/good.html

Page with 67 pairs of posts: http://temple.davesgarden.com/~dave/test/bad.html

(Scroll down to the bottom to see the black)

How weird...or are you pushing my leg, dave?

I scrolled down to the bottom of both those threads and it says a whole bunch of "hello"s...no black on either of them.

Bloomingdale, OH(Zone 6a)

I see the hello's too, no black. Copied and pasted:

hello! hello!
hello!
hello!
hello!
hello!
hello!
hello!
hello!
hello!
hello! hello! hello! hello! hello! hello! hello! hello! hello! hello! hello! hello! hello!

How do you do a screen shot?

on top of you keybord you have a button that says Print Scrn Sysreg.
Push that button when you have the screen you want to copy.
Open windows Paint. mark the paintpicture by leftklick/mark with cursor.
Then push Ctrl+V button and you have your screenshot.

Adding to the good information Janett has provided you might want to save the directions for future reference:

Between your alpha keyboard keys and the numeric keypad on your keyboard are keys with Insert, Home, Page Up etc. The top left button in that space says " Print Screen" or something similiar.

With the screen displayed that you want to copy, hold down the SHIFT key and press the "Print Screen" button mentioned above. That copies the screen image onto your clipboard.

Then go to Paint or Imaging or whatever basic image program you have and open it with a new blank page. Press Ctrl and the "V" key and it will paste the copied screen image onto the blank file. You can then save that file as a JPG image on your hard drive and upload to your DG post as you would any other image.

Edit: spelling

The black only shows up for Firefox users, apparantly. And even then, maybe only for Linux and MacOS.

Dave, I've been reading/posting in Safari today with no repeats of yesterday's problems. When I get back later today, I'll go back to Firefox which is so much faster. I'll let you know if anything crops up again.

I cannot do much in IE, it hangs up on me as it has done for 2 years, and totally unrelated to DG.

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

Dave, I see the 'hello's too. I am a Windows Firefox user.

Thanks Janett and Candy for those tutorials.
I will paste and copy that for referance.

I don't see black at the bottom of either link (using firefox), just lots of hello's outside the post boxes at the bottom...

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I had a plethora of hello's, too. I am a Windows XP/Firefox 1.0.7 user.
