Scooterbug,
mine is a bit smaller than the Crystal Palace you posted, but I love it just as much. It is known as "Ursula's Greenpalace" ;-)

It was built on top of the garage in 2001 (by Florian greenhouses), so the foorprint is the same as a standard garage. Since it is connected to the house, I can walk in through the upstairs room, which is a true bonus in the middle of Winter. Our house is heated through an oilburner ( forced air), so we branched off 3 ducts coming from the basement through the garage into the greenhouse. It has its own thermostat.

What a great set-up ;-)

snowhermit (here) has one of her GH's attached to the bedroom. What a way to wake up ........

Hi everyone

Don't think i've posted on this forum yet, but i've been lurking here for a while. Loved seeing all the pictures of your greenhouses and plants. It is definately inspiring. Here is my GH. My DH and I designed and built it. Didn't cost a whole heck of alot. DH is a masonry contractor and all the stone came from our yard. The GH side is approx. 10'x20' and the other side is my "shed".

Here is a summer pic taken last year. I have a large pond behind it, not sure if you can see it in this pic.

Here is a winter pic.......this was pretty much right after we completed it.

I love it and am grateful to have it, but it is tooooooooo small. We are planning to sell our home in the future and DH said we can build a new greenhouse that I can "never fill up". LOLOLOL

Here is a close-up of the window I designed for the "shed" side of the greenhouse. The dove has lots of meaning. We had to (regretfully) cut down a blue spruce to make way for this new greenhouse & pond. The tree was always full of Mourning Dove's and I just had to include one in my design.

Okay, one last pic for today. Here's an inside shot from the other day.
I am just about out of room and still have tons of plants to bring in before ol' man winter gets here. *sigh*
Thanks for letting me share. : )

Mommabird......do you heat your greenhouse in winter, and if so, how.

Deann

Wyano, PA(Zone 6a)

Hi eveyone

Vicki, I will be starting to root some of my firesticks soon. : )

Deann, in the last picture I posted (inside w/plants) notice the white heater on the far wall mounted at floor level. It is a Comfort Glow ventless propane heater manufactured by DESA. It works great and requires no electricity to run. You can buy them at Lowe's for a pretty reasonable price. I have a large propane tank hidden about 50 ft. away from the greenhouse and my supplier comes and automatically fills it up several times each winter.
Just like all other fuels, the price of propane has jumped dramatically this winter. Last time I checked, it was up to $3.00gal. I also have an electric heater that I may use on days when it's not quite as cold to help with the propane consumption this year.
I can't remember exactly, but I think I spent around $500 heating it last year. We have a pretty long cold season.......I turned it on in October and ran it well into April. I know I was paying over $2 gal last year.

Everyone here has wonderful greenhouses. I posted on 10/6 my GH but that was just the base. Now that it is completed and filled I would like to share a picture.

Very nice GH there 2pugdogs,, and the plants look lovely also,, are you going to heat it this winter? Are'nt greenhouses just lovely?

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

My DH ran a vent from the house to the GH. So far that is doing the trick. At night I set the thermostat in the house at 60* and it keeps my GH around 45. I also have a Black and Decker Electric heater which has a frost setting on it, that is my back up.

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

2pugdogs, very nice , glad to see your pics. Nice plants DonnaS

Au Gres, MI(Zone 5a)

mammabird.....I do have the same heater as you do in my greenhouse that works with propane gas. The first year I heated it all winter, and at that time gas was around 89 cents a gal. I just figured it was too costly and I could buy a whole lot of plants for what I paid in fuel. I too live where it gets pretty cold, Northern Michigan. I now wait till April to turn the heat on if it is needed when I start my plants by seed. I do have a good size exhaust fan for warmer months that keeps the temps in there at what ever degree I set it at. For the most part I have learned by trial and error some ways to get by without the heat in late spring.

Your gh in the snow with lights looks like a nice place to be. I heat mine all winter, using electricity, just because I love being out there in the winter and I usually start seeds in Feb,. Have lots of cuttings rooting now. DonnaS

rutholive....

The lights you see behind the greenhouse was of the sun setting. Was just a lucky shot I got after taking my dogs for a walk. By the way, I also entered that picture in Dave's Picture contest.....

Here is a picture taken in late Aug, not the cornfield....we plant corn for the deer......

I just posted this in the trading forum but thought I'd post it here too. Just got the plastic on (a temporary fix until the custom cover arrives) and some new shelves made to house my drugs of choice! (plants)

Here is ours. It came with the house. Dh wants to replace the glass as it is not up to safety codes. It is small. Not heated. I mostly use it for storage and last spring, our first in this house, we started lots of seedlings in there as there is a nice heated mat thing to set the seed trays on.

There is some sort of exhaust thing that is supposed to turn on when it goes over a certain temp, but we have never been able to get that to work. Also elaborate misting and watering hoses that we have never really gotten to work correctly. It has not been a priority over other home repair/improvement projects we've had but we'd like to get to it someday. This is our first time owning acreage and owning a home that needed so much in the way of repair/improvement, so we have been overwhelmed. It's fun tho and we're slowing getting a house we really love and is perfect for us.

There is also a sunroom attached to the back of the house that we use as our tv/family room right now but someday when the kids are grown and moved out (we have teens), I'd love to set it up as a garden room and try growing tomatoes year round in there. And a very large potting bench near the greenhouse. Since we love to garden, we were thrilled with these 'bonus' areas.

This is my second Fall season with a greenhouse. Last year the worse problems I encountered were with black mold and mealy bugs which always seem to accompany my primary plant hoya. I realize that the mold problem could probably be taken care of with another Fan. I am running one medium fan in there now, but need to add another small one on the other end of the greenhouse. I think my biggest worry this winter is spider mites since I will be overwintering quite a few brugmansia's in there.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

jerodsmom that is a really nice looking GH, what kind do you have? You have done what I am planning on doing next summer to mine is planting flowers around it, I should say on the one side and the back. You do have it fixed up real good.

Gwendalou I would get that baby fixed up and start using it, it does look very promising. Then having a sunroom is something I can only dream about. I would love to have one.

Langley, WA(Zone 7b)

I am using it in the sense of starting my seeds in there and I also have rose cuttings in there currently. I don't know that I could ever afford to have it heated year round.

2pugsdogs I can't remember the name of the company, But I ordered it through a company out of Canada. I will have to really dig to come up with some paperwork with the name on it. But so far, I have been really happy with it.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Totally terrific thread! I'm new to greenhouses, and your photos are such an inspiration!

jerodsmom, your gh is in such a pretty location! And I love those heart trellises! Where did you get them?

Gwendalou

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

Everyone has such great greenhouses and until yesterday it was my dream to have one..My hubby finally caved and agreed to build me one for my birthday so the lumber and about everything we need is laying outside ready for assembly..Now comes the fun part, assembly...
Hopefully we can get it up and running by x-mas.
Vickie

Langley, WA(Zone 7b)

Vickie, that is so cool! You guys will have fun building it. And you can make it exactly how you want!

We had been househunting for over a year and this house was the only one (and believe me we looked at every house for sale for miles around) that had a greenhouse. It was a real bonus!

Gwendalou

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

Gwendalou I have had those tresslis's for quite a few years. If I remember right I bought them at a Orchard's hardware store. But I can't say for sure, my memory isn't what it used to be.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Congratulations Vickie!

Enjoy...the building and the using!!

Ric

Langley, WA(Zone 7b)

jerodsmom, I don't think we have any Orchards up here in Wash. We had one where we used to live in Calif (Menlo Park).

Anyway, they are perfect in the spot you have them! I just think the whole setting is lovely.

Good job! ;)

Thanks Gwen

That was the main reason we decided to build our own but I wish the weather would cooperate with us, rain all day so will have to start again tomorrow if the rain will hold off.

Sunday as I was playing in my greenhouse, I had this thought. If you did not want your wife around during the football games, just give her a greenhouse. You will not see her for hours!!!!!!! What wonderful therapy a greenhouse is. I will make pictures and let you view mine. I am so proud of it. We are expecting a freeze this week and I am anxious to see how it works.

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

raggins, hope to see pictures of your gh. It is 23 degrees outside right now. Soon I must go out to the greenhouse and check on temp. this is the coldest morning so far this fall. I use a 2-speed electric heater.
