mammabird.....I do have the same heater as you do in my greenhouse that works with propane gas. The first year I heated it all winter, and at that time gas was around 89 cents a gal. I just figured it was too costly and I could buy a whole lot of plants for what I paid in fuel. I too live where it gets pretty cold, Northern Michigan. I now wait till April to turn the heat on if it is needed when I start my plants by seed. I do have a good size exhaust fan for warmer months that keeps the temps in there at what ever degree I set it at. For the most part I have learned by trial and error some ways to get by without the heat in late spring.
