By the way, who was talking about computer problems.
You want problems, I got them.
My son's girlfriend talked to me on AOL instant messaging last nite and it told me to download her pics so I did. Boy, that was so wrong to do. I ended up with a virus which was going around at their college.
So spent up until 2 am trying to fix it. Then wasn't fixed this morn. so spent until 11 am doing it again. Nothing. So gave up and went outside to work in the garden. Was supposed to take the day off from work to go to the river and relax. Well, that didn't happen.
Called the computer guy who comes to your house for $40 to see if he could come. He called back tonight at 8 pm! Little late. Talked about Spy Sweeper and he will come tomorrow maybe. I got online to download Spy Sweeper free trial and ran it. Boy, it sure found a lot of bad stuff. But I think the viruses are gone now. So shall see.
I hate viruses on computers. I depend upon computers for so much since I can't use the phone very well.
Enough complaining.
Sleep tight everyone.

sheesh - talk about a bunch of gabbers!!

defoe- my arm is killing me too - dr says it is tendonitits, but I am not sure. Went out and bought 'blue emu oil' last night (had dinner with friends and one swears by it!!' Put it on last night and again this morning- I am looking for an instant cure. What's wrong with your arm? Where is that Babs???

Had dinner last night with 7 friends I used to work with. Somehow they heard about my rotten birthday and one young guy I was especially close to gave me a card with a gift card to my favorite nursery. Oh, how delightful (why didn't I marry him!!) Somehow burned my tongue eating and it felt like it kept getting bigger and bigger all night- could hardly keep it in my mouth. I had to get up several times to make sure it wasn't hanging out - that's the truth too!

Darius = I am major cutting down on my diet cokes. Gonna allow myself one glass per day. I was downing a 2 lit. bottle easily. so bad for ya I know. Still haven't heard about your time with your sis - or did I miss it?

Sipping on a mug of warm cider courtesty of our neighbors- yum. There's more - grab another mug.

Memphis, TN(Zone 7b)

Sarv - thanks for the cider....there's a wee bit of a nip in the air this morning and that hits the spot!

Defoecat - you need to join Tues night chats.....we have a lot of fun.

Just stopping in to say mornin' and wish everyone well.

I'll let you know about the appointment with my GI.....

Marcia

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

Good morning GOBs! What a night! I went to bed about 10:30, fell asleep immediately, woke up at 5, went potty, back to bed, slept until 7, which is unusual for me. That's over eight hours! Must be the fall equinox, I'm ready to hibernate! Turned the heat on before I went to bed, and I'm glad I did because it's cold out this morning! No frost though, but darn chilly.

This is the time of year that the morning sun shines right into the window to my right, on the computer , so I have to close the blinds in order to see. Equally annoying is the late afternoon when it comes in from the west into the dinette and kitchen and I see all the cat hair, floor debris, etc that needs to be cleaned up. Funny I don't notice it all day....! My golf partner's GD does cleaning to earn money for school, and I'm going to have her come one day soon and do all my woodwork, and maybe, the inside windows. Give me a product hint...for the wood , I don't like Murphy's Oil Soap, what have you used? My DS uses Liquid Gold but I think it leaves too much residue. Maybe Pledge?

Cats are ecstatic, heat blowing through the vents onto their baskets, which are everywhere. (So why are they sleeping on me?)

Maria, how did your Dr appointment go? I'm up for my annual with my internist in a couple of weeks, and she is the tiniest little thing. She does the cardiac workup, blood tests for cholesterol and liver enzymes, and the "Other One" too which saves me a separate trip to the OB/Gyn. Medicare won't pay for a physical every year, so they are very careful how they code the visit so that it is covered. My insurance wont pay for anything that Medicare doesn't pay for, which is standard for all secondary insurance.

Dcat enjoy the RU for all of us. And take pictures!!! You cleaned out your CAR!! What a concept! I already did that once this year, I don't want to overdo it.

I have a to do list too, but it's for DH. He calls it my "you wish" list.
His to do list is a long litany of car stuff, for all his unfinished projects. Now that the garage is finally sided, he needs to get doors on, door openers installed, power hooked up...and snow will be flying sooner than we'd like. I'm hopeful that it will be done and he can get some of the stuff out of the upper garage and basement and stored in the loft but I'm not real optimistic.

Off to the shower, lunch with DD and movie "Flight Plan" with Jodie Foster. Just saw an interview with her on Bravo. Oh, and the PBS stations are currently showing a two hour special on Bob Dylan which is extremely well done, with clips and pictures from his early appearances, and commentary from him about them. It's excellent, even if you aren't a Dylan fan, because they include interviews with a lot of other performers as well. Joan Baez is one of my all time favorites.

Didn't I say I was leaving?

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

Good morning everyone! Sarv, you are such a comidian, you have me in stiches the way you discribe your mishaps, what a joy it is to read them, though I am sorry parts of your body are hurting ffor real, perhaps you should be a writer like, oh I wish i could think of ther name now, she was syndicated in newspapers when I was young, she wrote about family life in general, just remembered , Erma Bomberg or baumberg lol
Thanks for asking, defoe, I am, other than that awful sciatica, in top health, even my lungs after 60 years of smoking are that of my age, BP is 120/79 everything is ok too, I am blessed hope I will last for a while longer lol
Had stuffed pork chops with shell peas and a salad for dinner for my DD and husband, a pecan pie for dessert.,
I also wrote for my blog which I have not done in ages, just transfered something that I wrote once in DG.
Wish I had time to to talk with each one of you, but have to go to Dr. my back is hurting a lot today

Maria, that was Erma Bombeck, she was wonderful. She was a more typical homemaker than the ones portrayed on tv, with their high heels and perfect attire! Myself, I identify more with Roseanne!!

I did leave. Now I'm leaving again.

M5, PLEASE, don't say that, Roseanne??? Never could identify myself with her, lol Just saw her once and that was the end for her.

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7b)

Good Morning, everyone!!! And thank you for all the lovely welcomes from my original post yesterday. I'm so thrilled to find such a wonderful bunch of folks to *post* with.

I've got me morning cuppa tea and a fresh baked scone and I'm ready for bear!

Since I've been asked several times now for a bio, let me see if I can encapsulate this in a *Reader's Digest* version. I'm quite happily married to a wonderful man who happens to be a Master Chief in the US Navy (E-9). He's the Command Master Chief of the largest tenent command at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, Washington State. This is his swan song and we are looking forward to retirement from the Navy after 30 years of active service in 2007!!! Yay!!!

I've been in the medical profession since 1974 and have worked in various areas including ICU/CCU, Labour & Delivery, Med/Surg, Orthopaedics, Oncology, NeuroSurgery and the Emergency Department/Trauma Center for the last 9 years of my career. I'm finally working part time for the first time in my adult life and I'm LOVING it. I worked the last 15 years on graveyard shift and am finally enjoying a life and gettng back to the gardening I so love and put on hold for so many years.

I'm the daughter of a Foreign Service Officer and a Mum who stayed *home* and raised three children while dragging them around the world living out of steamer trunks and suitcases for the 36 years of my Da's career. I was born in Pasay City, Philippines and was raised overseas (Asia, Europe, South America, the Middle East and North Africa) until my parents sent me to the US to attend Univeristy and decided it was time for me to become an *American*. I like to call myself a *Global Citizen* or *Third Culture Kid*. So, if you notice my spelling being a bit different than regular American-English, it's because I was educated mostly in the British and American Ambassdorial School systems.

My hubby and I have no children together, though he has a 27 year-old son (who got married last Spring) from his first marriage. We have two Boston Terriers, "Willie and Elbee" who rule our home and keep us in line. We live on Whidbey Island, Washington State. It's the largest island in the contiguous United States and is only 20 miles as the crow flies from the border of British Columbia, Canada. We plan to move to NE Ohio after retirment and live among the Amish.

TaaaDaaaaahhhhh! The End......WHEW! You may all stand down now.

hi everyone :)
and, nice to meet you, babs. such an interesting background you have! in my next life, i want to be the child of a foreign service officer :) my husband is a retired big-city fireman, and he has such a respect and admiration for ER nurses. tough job. hats off to ya.
go navy! my best friend is a retired LCDR, and i've heard him say, "master chiefs run the navy" a zillion times :) whidbey island - i read the book by the kid who safely landed that demolished EP-3 in china ... if i had to choose one hero, he would be it. whenever i hear of whidbey, i think of him :) now, i'll be able to think of you, too!

meezer - i took your advice and just stuck my new plants in the
ground with abandon :) wherever there was a blank spot with the right amount of sun or shade ... plop!

am starting my annual apple-butter-making this weekend. look for a jar on the counter next week - right next to the warm biscuits :)

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

Good morning. Did somebody say scones? I could make one of those disappear in record time.

Babs, thanks for the bio. You have had an interesting life with all the places you've lived, your job, etc. Tell us now, how you've picked Amish country as a place for retirement. When your DH retires will you keep working? I have a neighbor who was raised all over the map, her dad was in the US Air Force. When my DH was a kid he lived on Whidby and had a huge paper route on the base. He started with one route and took over 2 others, made lots of money for a kid his age.

Erma Bombeck, what a character! Roseanne, no way!! Phyllis Diller was also very funny, including her clothes and hair and voice. I remember she said something about a peeping tom who told her to put it back on.......

Well, it's time to get moving, got lots of stuff waiting to be done and nobody else is gonna do it. See ya later, maybe when it's ice cream time in mid afternoon.

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7b)

Diggingit :-) You must be referring to Lt. Shane Osborne of VQ-1. For a young pilot, Shane did a very fine job of landing that P-3. They were called the *Whidbey 24*. (Pronounce each number separately, 2 - 4). Yes indeed, those folks (air crew) did what needed to be done when they collided with a Chinese fighter jet. They were *detained* after they safely landed at Hainan Island and they *razed* their electronic components. We all sat here on tenter hooks while those people remained the *guests* of the Chinese government. During the Navy Chief's Ball in 2001, there was a table setting placed for each captive crew member at the CPO Club until they were returned back here to NAS Whidbey.

And, dahling....tell your hubby I very much appreciate the job the fireman and constables do. I don't know, even if I were physically strong enough to do either of those jobs, could I ever? They see the worst of the worst and they also see the best of the best. But when the worst seems to outweigh the best, it's hard to keep a positive attitude and keep doing the best job you can. Please pass onto him my warmest regards and thanks for his service to the community.

Now, who's up for a cuppa tea or coffee and a scone? I'm wanting a second, LOADED with clotted cream and I'm trying hard to resist! *heavy sigh*.

MaryE dear, We've decided on Ohio for a couple of reasons. My father was originally from there, so I have ties with family in Ohio. I spent many happy times with my cousins on homeleave when we came from overseas every 3 years for re-Americanization, though I've never lived there myself.

My hubby has fallen in love with that area, enjoys the life-style and he's been offered teaching positions with Kent State Univeristy, THE Ohio State University and Wooster College once he retires. He has resumes in with a few other institutions of higher learning and is hoping to do just that very thing once he's released from Uncle Sam's service. He wants to assimilate into real civilian life and figures the best way to do so is get away from the military completely (Wright-Patterson would be the closest by 3 hours) drive for commissary and exchange use. We've watched those that have retired before us become shells of what they were once. They sit in the Navy Exchange sipping coffee in the mornings telling the same old sea stories they told when they were still active duty and they wither away into nothingness. You do know the difference between a sea story and a faery tale, don't you? If not, I'll clue you in. One starts with "Once Upon A Time" and the other starts with "Hey man, this ain't no s***". LOL.

And, finally, as to Erma Bombeck. Wasn't she an awesome person? I dearly loved her columns and her books. I also admired her for her bravery and her integrity. Did you know she suffered from renal failure and instead of buying herself a kidney by unscrupulous means, she put herself on the transplant list, waited her turn and passed away before she could receive a donation.

What's my definition of integrity? It's when one does in the dark the same as they do in the light. If there is a stop sign to be heeded in the daylight and one must come to a complete stop, then must one not do the same thing at night when no one else is around to see you not come to a complete stop? And use your turn signal as well?

Here's a picture of my boys.....Willie and Elbee.....Elbee on the left and Willie on the right, with the haggarty mark in the middle of his blaze.

Good Morning!

I'm off to a slow start today. I did not want to haul my hiney out of that nice warm bed. Neither did the critters. Boy howdy, they had me pinned to the bed again today. If they could get any closer, I'd be sleeping under all of them. It's pretty funny when I have to move 4 critters just to be able to get out of bed, and then watch them all try to get the warm spot!

I can't believe how cold it got last night, and then it is supposed to warm right back up. I guess Mother Nature spent the night with the freezer door open to cool off? I'm telling you, it's menopause. Now we just have to look out for the emotions. Earthquakes and eruptions?

The Farmer's Alm is telling us we will have mild temps this winter, but heavy snow. My BIL says it's just gonna be a hard winter period. He says the muskrat dens (along the the backwaters of the Mississippi) are really thick this fall. Thicker than he has seen them in quite a few years. I'm not so sure. All the weather signs and folklore have been real screwey so far. I heard the Locusts way back on July 13, way too early. But no frost 6 weeks later thank goodness! So I jsut don't know what to make of it this year. I plan to hibrrrnate, lol, all winter anyway.

What signs/folklore/sayings do you use to predict the winter? Dry summer = wet winter, but the last 3 years that one has been shot to heck. The Locusts are usually close for the first frost. Robins always get caught in one bad snow after they return, that's been accurate for as long as I remember. Groundhogs are not as close as the other Candlemas sayings (If Candlemas Day is bright and clear, there'll be two winters in the year. OR If Candlemas day be sunny and bright, Winter again will show its might. If Candlemas day be cloudy and grey, Winter soon will pass away.), but I can see how it started. Please note! I do not intend this to be a discussion of religion, simply weather, ok?

Anyway, what are your winter predictions?

Ahhh, GOB's I'm back, fully (I hope) once I get caught up on sleep. My sister (who was here for a week) left this morning, with mother (ashes) in the back seat until we have a family memorial in spring and then decide what to do with the ashes. Mother has a plot next to her husband but they want too much $$ to interr them.

Too many trips while she was here... to Boone Friday-Sunday (for ashes and Blue Ridge RU), then to Asheville and back Tuesday for my lung appt. and too many late nights. Whew. Now I'm just hoping my cat will get back to normal soon...

Babs, Welcome, from a Navy Brat! My dad retired in the 70's with 30 years, many as Chief which he made in 1949.

babs -
sea story vs fairy tale - absolutely hilarious, hadn't heard that one
from my navy pal before, but i'll definitely bring it up! he did the 30 years and immediately started on a civilian life/job, although he IS working for a navy defense contractor on the norfolk base. he was more than happy to give up the khakis for civies & a place to grow roots for the first time in his adult life.

amish country ... best quilts in the world, i think :)

Ok, so now I'm totally grossed out. Yesterday I heard this terrible rukkus coming from under our house. It's getting cooler now and I'm sure there are critters trying to find places to winter over. I told hubby about it y'day when he came home from work and we went to Home Depot last evening after his bi-weekly hair cut (must be 4-oh you know, an example to the troops) and picked up some of those sticky mats and a HUGE rat trap. He set them in the crawl space last night with some peanut butter for bait and just a short time ago I heard this LOUD snap. So, I go pull the cover off the crawl space entry and there's this headless thing laying next to the rat trap but stuck on the sticky mat. Oh, YUK!!!! It's disgusting!!!! It's furry, dark grey in colour, with a long, hairless tail. I'd say the whole thing including the tail is about 14 inches long.

I called hubby at work, he's laughing, said pull the mat back out and toss it in the trash. Oh, sure says I, you think I'm going to pull the mat up from under the crawl space and just non-chalantly toss it in the garbage?!? Not on your life, critter killer! You come home and get that thing out from under the crawl space! He's cracking up, the skipper is in his office cracking up (goofball put me on the speaker phone) and the poor sailors that are checking into the squadron today are laughing their fool heads off. Sheesh! How's a gal to hold her head up at the Holiday Party this year when 1280 sailors and sailorettes are going to know the Command Master Chief's wife wouldn't toss a dead critter in the trash!?! Oy vey! *LOL*

Won't the folks at work love this one? I can see it now....Poor Babs, she has dead things under her house. *heavy sigh*

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Babs, sounds like an opossum. I wouldn't mess with it either.

Bloomingdale, OH(Zone 6a)

I always tie fishing line to any kind of trap I set. Then you can tie the line to something close and it keeps the trap from being dragged away, and aides in retrieval. But then again, I just dump them in the garbage, I pretty much consider most "used" traps disposable!

I'm with Darius on this one, leave it for dh. Tell him you outrank the skipper. It might not be a matter of National Security, but if he wants bedroom security...

Happy Birthday - Happy _1 - may you have many more!!

I just got back from a "me" trip to town = to heck with gas prices!! Went to Hobby Lobby - bought some yarn and needles- gonna start on a unisex baby blanket. I need something to do with my hands and I have already done too many of those scarves. I'm sure one of the DIL's will have a baby soon -

Aria- I love Erma Bombeck and read her faithfully (when she had a column in the paper) - ya I think I am a lot like her actually.

Gosh Babs - you have really had a life!! All that travel. I am such a dud in that field - been from Mich to Fla a couple of times, out to NY once and Ohio. Other than that I am such a home body - part of me would like to travel, but I suffer from incredible worry about something 'bad' happening. Plus DH is not a traveler and would not ever plan a trip, so it was always left to me and I just ran outta steam. But I enjoy living thru trips by others. DH and I used to go to travel logs, but we always looked out into a 'sea of gray hair' and decided we weren't quite ready for that yet~

I stopped on the way home from Hobby Lobby at a Wendy's (my fav fast food!) I was in hog heaven -motored up to the window, shouted in - jr cheeseburg deluxe and a diet - pulled up to the next window and got my grub, then motored to a parking place facing the airport. I LOVE eating fast food, with the radio on, and getting into a good book. Honestly, just made my day~~

Did someone say SCONES???? You KNOW how I love them... I've never had 'clotted cream' -somehow the name just doesn't sound good!!

I've done absolutely nothing today and I think I will just make it a 'do nothing' day. Housework will still be there tomorrow

It was major chilly here this morning too - I'm trying NOT to turn on the furnace yet. I do have my heating pad roaring on HI tho - plus a warm sweatshirt and cozy socks.

Well, time for a couple of chapters of new book before DH comes home. He is leaving for the weekend and I really don't like to be alone. Somehow a snoring body in the chair at night is comfort - anyone wannta come over for a slumber party??

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

This is so funny, Babs, reminds me when I firstcame here tobe married to this Yankie soldier and here I am very urban knowing very little about country life. One evening when he came home from work, I told him I saw a mouse under neath the sink it was that big, showing the size with my hands to about 18". He stated to laugh and said that was not a mouse, that was a rat, I nearly chucked up, oh such memories of getting used to bucolic living.

I know what you mean about spelling, Babs, I was taught by British Prof's and still spell their way at times but my biggest problem is, I never learned how to type.

Darius, so nice to have you back, glad your sister could come.
MG, around here it is said the more achorn on the ground the harder the winter and do we have tons of them right now, I keep playing soccer with them down the long driveway.

Oh, sarv48 lovey. You don't know what you've missed if you've never had Devonshire Clotted Cream on a scone!. I make a fair cinnamon/toffee scone that is just scrumptious with clotted cream. In case you don't know what it is, clotted cream has a consistency of soft butter. It's made from the cream of cows that have a high butter fat content to their milk, as a Jersey has. It's wonderful on baked goods such as bread with honey, scones, jam, syrup or treacle aka thunder and lightening, but it's most perfect for putting on a scone.

One makes this Devonshire Clotted Cream by allowing fresh (unpasteurised) cream to sit in a heat proof dish for 12 hours. Then put the cream on to heat on a very low heat setting. It must never boil as this will coagulate the albumin and ruin the cream. Heat until small rings form on the cream, then the cream is sufficiently scalded. Remove it from the heat and store it in a cold place at least 12 hours. Then skim the thick, clotted cream and serve it very cold as a garnish for berries, or spread on scones and topped with jam. Mmmmm, good!

Morning_Gayle, there is actually a string tied to the sticky traps and the snap trap, but I still don't want to pull the nasty thing out from under the crawl space. I'll leave it for hubby to deal with when he comes home from work. Besides, I don't want him to be bored while I'm at work and have nothing to do!* ROFL* And, I've always had to take care of everything for the last 28 years while he's been out at sea or deployed somewhere, and he's always complaining that he feels unneeded. This way I can assure his required presence in our marriage. *LOL*

Moab, UT(Zone 6b)

mg, me thinks you are a little warped. like meeting a sister at heart or at least in comedy.

Darius, it will take a coupla days to feel settled after all the road time and people in your house time. Sometimes it is just so good to know you won't have to deal with another soul all day long. So you can just do ur own thing at ur own pace. Love those days myself.

For those of us with chilly knees and legs, DD got a pet blanky that has a 'space blanket' sewn between its two sides. radiates kitty's own heat back to itself and is just soft and cuddly enough to make up for slight rattle of that inner foil blanket part. Just wondering, do they make such an item for us humans? I've had one of those space blankets in my emergency pack for so long I wonder if it would even unfold by now. [?]

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

MG- I love dogs- I'll take her!! We're without dogs at the moment- just have a very independent cat. She is outside most of the day, but comes in at night to lay by me on the couch. She insists on putting her body right by my head and then cleaning her private parts. I don't say anything because DH hates animals and if he were aware of what was happening, sweet cat would find her behind kicked out the door! Such is life=

I gotta get outta here - I am spending WAYYY too much time here!!

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

I WAS leaving, but then someone had to post and I had to return to read it! LOL

Babs, how bout the receipe for the scones??? Please. I think I will skip the clotted cream - I just eat scones plain.

Now I am going for sure (bathroom calling me!)

Cool Babs,

I remember only too well the joys of deployment. I'm glad it is over for me, and almost over for you.

We have a British import store in town, and they have a tiny bakery. I've had clotted cream. Ummm, it's an aquired taste. I do like that golden syrup that I can't think of the name of, lol.

As requested:

Cinnamon/Toffee Crumble Scones
Scones:

1 stick (1/2 C.) plus 3 T. unsalted butter

3/4 C. sugar

3 C. cake flour

2 1/2 C. bread flour

5 t. baking powder

1 1/2 C. whipping cream

Glaze:

1/4 C. whipping cream

1 egg, beaten

Cinnamon crumbles:

1/4 C. each: unsalted butter, all-purpose flour, sugar

1 T. ground cinnamon

Heat oven to 350° F. For scones, place the butter and sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer; beat until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. Sift together the flours and baking powder; mix into butter-sugar mixture. Add cream; mix just until dough forms; do not overmix. Work in toffee chips.

Roll dough into an 8-by-8-inch square. Cut dough into 12 equal squares; cut to form 24 triangles. Place scones on greased or parchment-lined baking sheets; set aside. For glaze, beat together the cream and eggs; brush over tops of scones with pastry brush.

For cinnamon crumbles, mix the butter, flour, sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl with a fork; sprinkle over tops of scones. Bake until golden brown, about 18 minutes.

Yield: 24 scones
