Yeah, Magpye did ask for opinions, and obviously there's a mixture of opinions (personally I'm pretty much neutral and don't mind her posts at all), so I think we should wrap it up and let Magpye post how ever she wants. :)

I don't understand why the typo wasn't just reported to the help desk via the "contact us" link at the bottom of every page, rather than posting the error publicly in this forum. It's not really a bug, and there was no question that it was an error easily fixed. No one likes to be corrected in public for piddly little things that just need a quick heads-up via e-mail.

Magpye, you are wonderful. I don't always have time to read through your posts, but when I do, I feel I have gained something. For the tech requests, I agree - keep it simple.

When we think we tell people how to express themselves in general, now that's a scary thought. You just keep up the good work, dear. And please never stop sharing your terrific photos.

Oh my...

I've been following this thread and have now noticed that my name has been brought up twice. Personally, I'm with the group that has chosen to skip over Magpye's posts simply because even I find it either difficult to read (read that as unpleasant, please) or because it seems to bastardize a particular style of writing (if "style" is indeed the proper term).

As many of you know, some of my postings are "tall tales, stories, or excerpts from some of my stories. In those postings there is minimal "dialect" (to use the term applied several times in this thread) and when it does appear it is basically consisting of "ya'll", "reckon", etc, and more often than not, very little more than that. There is a fine line between speaking and writing "Southern" and speaking/writing it to the point of over-using that technique (if indeed it can be construed as such). As in all writings, and acting, and singing, extreme flamboyance tends to take away from the experience rather than add to it.

I certainly understand the opinions of those that have a hard time reading Maypye's post and I certainly cannot come to her rescue. I find her writing difficult to read. This is a shame, I suppose, because if it were fine-tuned and "finessed" I bet it would be much more enjoyable reading!

On the other hand, if she prefers to write that way, so be it! No big deal, eh? Love it, or leave it (skip it). (Heck, ee cummings chose not to use capitol letters. I bet that caused this same type of discussion in those days.)

As for the original topic of this thread, I'll have to agree with those who prefer that reports to Admin be written in "easy to understand" writing...it is simply the most appropriate manner. And I'd apply that same preference when it comes to input on Plant Files, Garden Watchdog, Garden Bookworm, your IRS tax form, Letters to The Editor of your local paper, etc.

And now, back to our regularly scheduled program!
Luv ya'll! And many thanks to everyone for keeping this thread open and honest with no "lashing out". The DG Family...ya gotta luv us! ♫

Well done, Shoe!

I find the dilect to be stimulating to my old tired brain. It has to have something to keep me alert and help me stay as young as I can. If you read it out loud, you can pick up the lingo and really get into it. It keeps posts from being so mundane and makes you think about your reply. It's all for entertainment and fun, don't get so up-tight about it. Keep it coming Magpie, I need the cranial stimulation.
When you get to be my age you need a brain teaser to keep you alert!

Off the point again, (sorry) but where are 'Shoe's stories posted? I'd like to read some of his, too, and I haven't seen them around..

I guess he's not on the Perennials Forum much (where I am a lot lately). Thanks. :-) t.

T, you might go to his DG page and look at the threads he has started although I'm sure some of his stories are interspersed in other threads... Best is hearing them in person!

I’ve watched my p’s & q’s .. along with attempting to maintain my best behavior. This, is the best that I can offer …

* I DO apologize for its boring length *

erynne1973 .. Your diplomacy in your comments is much admired (and, a bit envied, I confess) .. Thank you. ( * Perhaps this may also address jestelleoans and Gardenwifes curiosity also *) Some of your questions and suggestions of ‘should have used D-mail' - - is the first route that was considered. I’d definitely wanted to include the screen capture image with my report, for greater clarification. However (and most understandably) > Daves D-mail had this request also . . .

Quoting:
Before emailing Dave, please read this note: Dave loves to get emails from the members of this site, but please be warned that if you are emailing to request a feature for Dave's Garden, or if you need any assistance with anything, this isn't the place to do it. We have several administrative members who help me handle issues on the site, but they don't have access to my inbox. Therefore, if you need assistance with the site, please instead contact the administrators by clicking on this contact us link.

The ’Contact link, that Dave gives in the content (and also is very visible at the bottom) - provided no means for any image attachment. Hence, I felt that my only option was to post it as a new thread in the ‘Daves Garden’ forum.

My reasons for going to the ‘subscription’ tab for information was two-fold: to order a gift subscription for someone else, along with renewing that of my hubby’s. And, quite frankly, the lil tiny boo-boo sorta jumped-off-the page at me.

I shall resolve myself to the fact - that I was somewhat tactless in submitting my ‘error report’ to Dave and DG, by utilizing my ‘jargonized’ wording in the content. It’s a distinct possibility, that my ‘indescrepancy’ was simply meant to be. One may could go so far to say that it’s been one of the proverbial ‘being in the right place, at the right time’ scenarios. One never knows ..

This thread, with its somewhat varied composition of opinions (and, yes: feelings) that have been disclosed in these posts .. indeed, have proven to be most enlightening! Wouldn't you guys be willingly to agree, that there has been significant benefits gained in this mildly maniacal hullabaloo -?-

I choose to think so … for I’ve realized that I certainly have some ‘fence mending’ and repairs to attend to, and a bridge or two to try to rebuild.

Darius .. Your much too kind gesture and comments have been very much appreciated.

I hope she can separate comments about dialect from comments about the person using them.

Tis a bit of hazy a line of demarcation in some of these posts and comments. However, it has served to shed much needed light. Perhaps I, too, failed miserably at establishing the same, for you .. during my torrid attempts to torment you into stoppin’ smokin’. I am so very sorry for humiliating some of you in that way. I’d sincerely put my heart, soul, and daunting words into my ‘grand scheme’ to force a challenge upon you. The tactics are similar to the ‘Tough Love’ program from many years ago. It’s been successful for quite a few folks .. My desire was to appeal to your intellect, knowledge, and skill; along with the self-discipline .. as is conveyed and has been witnessed many times here on DG.

Kooger .. I shall not tease you (too luvinly) here .. but your enigmatic report of search & research for any posts I’ve made elsewhere .. has indeed given me a wee lil giggler or two. Thank you.

Paulwhwest .. quite frankly, I was uncertain if I should ‘thank you’ or, ‘duck’ once more. lol .. I wasn’t going to request any further clarification … but, am truly relieved that you opted to speak your mind once more, and eased the ailing a wee bit. Thank you.

Ulrich .. I shall give reference to your ..

Anyone who is still able to get cracked up in these serious times is very fortunate. Too dang many folks are too dang square to let go.

.. Tis so peculiar - for the same is usually my philosophy also. However, I will overlook your condescension .. for I feel relatively certain, that you may feel refreshingly vindicated in your effort to step from behind others’ shirt tails .. of your apparent exoneration that I ‘had it comin’. And, yep, ya jes may be right ...

Breezymeadow, Bitterqueen .. mmmm .. I'm truly speechless! ...

Nap .. so glad to see you removed yourself from the precarious perch. Straddlin’ the fence rail, can get a bit uncomfortable after awhile.

Baa, IndaShade, Sugarweed & imzadi .. I’ve appreciated your input as well.

Dyson .. your visit .. well, guess everyone needs to see that their names are ‘out there’ for all to see. (hee)

Sbarr and plant_fiend .. Please know, that my wee wound has been healed. Thank you so much for your eloquence, and your kindness …

kennedyh, tayson80, Dravencat, plant_fiend, Zuzu, 2vernes, tabasco, and those of you that have D-mailed and e-mailed. My cup runneth over .. Yall are truely one-of-a-kind genuine gems! Many thanks ...

shirleygirly .. that sweetness of your comment, has been most dearly appreciated. Thank you.

Horseshoe .. I’ve not requested any critique (of any ‘technique’). I applaud those who take great strides to prevent themselves from becoming a member of the dictatorial ‘conformist’ writing rule. The urgency to remove the barriers of the (traditional) limitations imposed, and the overwhelming need to bring about change, in the world of writing - is dire. (Writing) is rapidly becoming akin to an expressly limited repertoire of (food/cooking) recipes. Thank you for your input ..

Many of us encounter a bit of difficulty .. our misspellings, attempting to decipher far too many abbreviations and code, lack of some critical punctuation, the tons of ‘run on’ sentences, and much too lengthy paragraphs. It’s all a part of our genetic code (could be virtual-?) make up .. and, our ‘choices’. Personally, I find all of the posts here on DG intellectually challenging and ‘brain & tongue-twistingly’ whole-heartedly delightful. The content of some threads and posts however, do make me wonder if some folks do anything other than ‘belly-ache’. Myself included, a time or two ...

I thank the good Lord, for making all the different molds for each and every one of us, as human beings. Being able to add yet another batch o’blessings to my own basket is wonderful .. but contributing to anothers’, is awesome. My being allowed such wonderful opportunities with the many folks that may either walk beside me, or allow me the privilege to stroll with them .. while on our journeys through this life: I’m learning to not take lightly.

I shall continue to partake of my subscribed share in this garden, along with the few of us incessant weeds that need pluckin’ up by our roots ever so often. There is no need of change in my ‘resolution’. For I’ve learned long ago, that much is in vain .. with trying to please each and every variable human critter that I may meet or stumble upon through my days in real life. The same, is far more applicable to the virtual world!

The bigger picture revealed .. is that it seems that some of you, may would have kept this bottled up even longer. I am pleased to have been of service.

Thank you.

As I was reading this thread I kept thinking of the concept of generosity of spirit. Then I felt so embarrassed because of all the times I am not generous of spirit. It is something I must work on within myself.

sooo..in the end, like everything else in life, it's all about choices. mag chooses to write with her flair, the rest choose to read or not read. it seems so simple. i found this whole debate rather astounding...interesting, but yanno...wow, who woulda thot.

Well, well, Maggie, this seem to be a case of "beware of what you wish for"; I find it easyier, after all, to understand your dialect rather than your real English:

"However, I will overlook your condescension .. for I feel relatively certain, that you may feel refreshingly vindicated in your effort to step from behind others’ shirt tails .. of your apparent exoneration that I ‘had it comin’ "

BTW, if we go back to the top of this weirdest of all threads we will find that what started it ws NOT the fact that you called attention to a Dave's Blooper PUBLICLY, but that you did it in a foreign language.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Amen and good nite to all...

Rocky Mount, VA(Zone 7a)

Ulrich Haven't you noticed that there are no "foreign languages" in this country?

When was the last time that you bought a minor (ie. toaster, electric skillet, crock-pot, deep-fat fryer, yes the list goes on to tv's cell-phones, computers,

Wait - a COMPUTER IS MINOR? - yes it a minor piece of equipment (cost wise) for most (not all).

anyways that did not come w/instructions in english & spanish/french/german/japanise etc.?

I'm waiting for instructions/service manuals in "surfer",
They are comeing - I just haven't found the site yet.

Magpye, frankly, I like the Southern you better. I think that's who you really are. Am I right? I just want you to be who you really are. But I'm pretty new here, so I don't know the real you. I did check out your homepage and was glad to see a picture of you.

Phoenix, MD(Zone 7a)

Amen darius!

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

Good on you, Magpye! A great read and I did enjoy the thread and hope your feelings aren't bruised. Only a strong person could ask for opinions like you did. I'm convinced I should quit looking at just the pictures and do some reading too. :)

Kernersville, NC(Zone 7a)

The Southern you? Oh my goodness! I do hope that no one thinks we speak or write like this. This is a personal choice, not a regional standard.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Of course not. I lived in Texas for awhile, and picked up a drawl. I like it. That's not an insult, is it? I also spent a fair amount of time in Charlotte. Some drawl, some don't.

mid central, FL(Zone 9a)

this looks like it may get ugly again and i would just like to say for the record that i lived in Arkansas for 3 years. no one i ever met talked like this. when i first tried to read her posts i was insulted even tho i understood that it wasn't meant to be cruel. i have also learned since this thread began that mag posts some pretty fine pictures which alot of people, myself included, have probably not seen because of the dialect thing. you know, you start to read and just skip what is most assuredly the good part. i think when it comes down to it, that's the saddest part of this whole thread. debi

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

The folks that think that all southerners speak in 'dialect' are probably the same ones that pack winter coats to cross the northern border in July! Some folks don't get out much (and that's ok too!)

Culpeper, VA(Zone 7a)

Trackinsand - I agree with you completely.

While Magpye may find it regional/funny/whatever, unless part of a literary piece, that sort of dialect writing can be offensive to many people. I don't really know what the writer is trying to prove/convey by it, but to each his own. I'll continue skipping the posts. My loss perhaps, but not really.

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

I agree with Butterqueen. Nap, I know NO ONE that talks like that.
I do say Ya'll, instead of "Youse Guys", and Howdy as a curtsey to my native Texas.
Otherwise I talk in complete sentences and words. My DM did always accuse me of inventing words, but that was mostly dyslexia.
Don't refer to that as Southern, Please.
Sidney

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Whatever. I'm sure there's a word for it and I chose the wrong one.

Manhattan Beach, CA(Zone 11)

Just like religion and politics. You can hit them over the head with a bat but they'll never get the point.
How do you like that for neutral diplomacy?
But to wimp out is not my way, so I'll say I am with all you brave souls who dare speak out against the overusage and wearing out of a good thing for no apparent reason.
