The rustle of leaves in the breeze gets so much absorbed by that road noise that we can't hear it except at night. Traffic noise has indeed become a familiar background that seems unavoidable. But to our luck, our house is about 50 ft fom the road and that is quite some relief in itself. It is the trucks and buses that ply the road that are a nuisance esp. since 4 years. Now they have been forced to erect signal lights at the junction very close by.

I, too, have traffic going past our house and yard. Our house is on a corner of the main road which is not paved, but used by most everyone in this neighborhood. Until recently, I had a buffer of trees and brush along my property edge, but the road easement was recently cleared and now it is much more open. I am getting much more of the street sounds, and next spring, I will have much more dust from the dirt road. Once our yard & gardens were not visible from the road, but now we are out there for all to see. I feel like I am living in a fish bowl. LOL!

Fish bowl? I'm in no different habitat! Mine too is a corner site. It was a prestige to have one in the corner, but nowadays it is such a nuisance that it can drive you crazy. My polyalthia longifolia are growing taller now and will act as a screen somewhat.

I plan to spread some wild plant seed along the perimeter of my yard this year. Our local cow parsnip (we call it pushki) grows to well over 5 feet tall, so it can afford some cover. Our fireweed, as well. Soon enough, the alders will start to sprout up again. By the time they decide to work on the road again, which could be as long a five years from now, they'll have to clear the whole easement again.
