well if that one didn't scare you.. I'll post another with me in it... not squinting so much .. and with the flowers , Judy , you can see the red Plumeria .. on my left .. and a pink Brugmancia on my right .. it was hard to show them from any distance.. and still retain refrences for scale
The Jungle above the Asphalt Jungle...NYC
Someday soon no one will be able to find you! LOL How great everything is!! I think I will send some of these pics to my son who is living in NYC. He won't believe what you have there.
Gordon, plumeria that big...woooow..now tell me, what do you do with all of the plants in the winter?...You have a virtual forest up there?...Judy
Juttz... well I bring an all to great amount of them inside with me... to the point where you can hardly move about freely... some I tret as annuals.. some I make cuttings from and grow them out in the winter .. some are bulbs/ corms and get stored in the dark.. wish I had a cool place... but everything inside is so heated... MMMM Maybe a greenhouse is what I need..
Thanks Carol... such a joy... nad thanks for the offer ... I do have some things from you already.. but I'm not sure i an remember just what they are right now.. things I've gotten from Karen here ...
Picture of the understory planting of the Elephant ears photo I posted earlier ..with me... ..
Gordon
Wow, what a plant paradise. I hate to ask this, but have you ever had any trouble with fandals?? There are always those few that destroy what someone else has worked so hard to build. I hope everyone enjoys your "gardening" as much as we did viewing it here.
AnnaZ
No Anna... in 8-10 years I've never had a problem... someting so overgrown is a bit scarey... I guess... but the only roofs that have level access to mine are stable residences.. and I seldom see anyone from there . I also have varying hours.. and might well be up there during the day .. or in the middle of the night ... I did have to chase away three squrrels today... they climb the 5 floors to the roof with the peanuts they are given in the park.. they want to bury them in my planters and sometimes do uproot something in doing this... they like to bury in my planters as they thaw out a month or so before the ground does... so nuts here are available to them at the end of the winter..when they are the most hungry... I understand ... but still I do chase them off the roof whenever I get a chance...
Its awesome that you can grow all that up there
is there any concerns about the weight on the terrace?
can you put like a leanto GH up on there?
WOW!!!!! thats amazing and the views man thats really something great you have there.
Crestedchik... Well Thanks... weight ... MMMM well it is a roof .. and built a long time ago... with the old regulations... Yes I am somewhat concerned.. it is a bit deceptive... all of the planters / fence on the sides of the roof sit on the bearing walls of the building...solid brick down to thefoundation... the planters/fence that run across the front and back are part of a box beam set up... wit h the inside of the planters being the inside of the box beam... this is a clear span of the 22 feet from one bearing wall to the other.. compleatly off the ground in the air... across the 22 ft.. everything else inside is weight sitting on the roof... guess it is some... but I do try and keep it to the edges of it where there is less force on the joists of the roof.. and try to keep everything smaller than I might .. like the 7' tall elephant ears are in a planter that's 3 1/2" wide... but 5' long... so evrything is growing long... I can't imagine freeing the bulb for wintrer storage with dismanteling the planter .. but it is one wall of the pond also.. I'd started a house like structure ... to come through to get out onto the roof.. but was visited by the building department and had a 6 session hearing on the work there... but I did win out after all with teeh stuff being on the bearing walls mostly... so I halted other building ... which I'd require drawings and engineer and construction by outside parties... [ when I'm a builder ] but perhaps this winter it looks like a temp hoop house or something for storage..
CARLAB thanks alot ok ya'll have won another picture for your gracious comments.. thanks Gordon
WOW!!! (at a loss for more words)
