Hi, does anyone know the name of this morning glory? I am new to them, and have two different kinds so far; I will post both pictures of each. Help me if you can, I know they are common, not like yours!!!! Beautiful, japanese morning glories, boy do I wish I had some of them, well one!!!! LOL!!!
Morning Glorys 2005 # 7
Joseph, aren't the Blue Silks simply divine.....
Such beauties!
Stacey, Your Fujishibori is awesome. I have several vines going and am getting the same color as yours, and on some of the other vines a lighter color. Can't decide which I like the best - they are both splendid.
Here is one of my lighter Fujishibori from this morning
The MG in the background is Lavender SunSmile
Hi,
I have a large leaf morning glory that I got back in June and it has grown about 2 feet or more but has not bloomed yet. How long before I might actually see flowers?
Thanks
Rose that looks like Milky Way to me?
Rose that looks like Milky Way to me, too.
I didn't plant Milky Way - I planted Shiva from a commercial seed packet and Milky Way is what I got.
The joys of seed planting...LOL
How long to set seeds?
My Mt. Fujis are not setting seeds. Do I need to do anything special to them?
I have got these light blue ones that are really pretty and I wanted to save some seeds for Golgi.
Thanks all :-)
Kauai17,
Your photo is lovely. I assume that is your 'Split Personality'?
If so, the petals are supposed to split - which is where the name of the MG comes from.
Stacey the 'Fujishibori' is stunning!!
Joseph, you did.
The first bloom that I posted came in a mix that I got off eBay that were not your seeds.
I'll save seeds for you of the Yojiro Red Star. Also have one that is a Dark Blue.
Emma
Oh Wow Emma that red star is gorgeous. May I ask where Jacksonville is?
Hi Kauai17,
Jacksonville is 25-Miles south of Tyler.
I worked in Round Rock area, actually worked in all of Williamson County, when I lived in Austin for almost 2 Years. Worked for a Yellow Pages Company.
Man, I'm always so far behind when I have to catch up...
Rose_petalz--I agree, your MG is Ipomoea purpurea, 'Milky Way'.
Botany's Desire--you should see flowers before too long. Do you have your vine set where it gets at least 6 hours of direct sun, and are you keeping it well watered? Have you fertilized it? This particular MG is kind of picky...
nuts4spuds--I saw that on eBay too, and I wanted to laugh and throw up at the same time. When are people gonna stop ripping people off on there? I've seen lots of sellers creating names just to make a sell on more common items. As for your vines setting seeds, I think they have to reach a certain point of maturity before they do. That's been my experience so far in the last two years. My 'Heian no Umi' is just now setting a few seeds, and I planted it back in March. Patience is the only thing you can do (and I should be one to talk!).
Emma, luvsgrtdanes--Thanks! Emma, I'm with you on the specking...
Joseph--Does 'Akatsuki no Umi' have green leaves? I haven't grown this one yet, so I'm curious...Emma looks to have the same problem I do with spider mites.
Emma--the dark blue 'Yojiro' is called 'Chiaki', the red one 'Yaguruma'. I have the purple 'Maisugata', but haven't grown it yet.
Texas is just too big!!! We have been here in Round Rock for almost 2 years now and we absolutely love it!
Okay, I was wondering, but I just took a closer look at Emma's pic, and saw that the leaves are variegated, it's just hard to see with the spider mite damage.
Oh No, Joseph,
You would say that the Akatsuki No Umi has nice variegated leaves, not solid green.
Stacey is so right, I have spider mites BAD!
We are spraying now to see who will win....us or them....LOL
On some of my vines you can't tell Variegated from Green.
So, I HAD to go take a look with my flashlight.
Joseph, Here is the Akatsuki No Umi Leaves.
You can see the new VARIEGATED leaves emerging and the 'yuck leaves' that I'm now cutting off all of my vines that are still blooming.
I keep missing my moonvine flowers...the only evidence I have of them blooming is those big seedpods.
Stacey,
Here is photo of my Yojiro 'Blue'.
It is actually a 'Blue-Purple'
Is this 'Chiaki'????
Doesn't look like the one at this link,
however, it is very hard for me to tell with this tiny packet.
http://lionnet.fc2web.com/JMG/MGsell1.html
Or, does it matter about the spokes?
'Chiaki' looks like the spokes go all the way to the center.
Mine do not.
Also, is Yojiro correct?
OR, Is it Youjiro?
'Yojiro' is the correct spelling, as far as I know. I've seen a lot of others misspelled too, but I pick my fights...*G* I'll just suffice to say that English is a second language to the Japanese, and most Americans don't know any Japanese beyond a few cultural things...
The photo on my 'Maisugata' package shows a dark purple flower without any blue, so I'm guessing from looking at the photo on the web page that the blue ones will definitely be blue, but given that the photos on the packages aren't really all that accurate (they tend to "dress" them some), if it looks more blue than purple, then it's probably 'Chiaki'. My blue picotee seem to have a hint of purple in them, too, but they're more blue than purple. 'Maisugata' is most likely a very obvious deep purple.
From looking at the photo on my packet, the spokes look like they go to the edge of the throat, not in it, so I would say your flowers are coming out true to form.
Ooh, and a very nicely colored one too!
I only had one bloom this morning. This is Rose Silk. It is a tad torn up from last night's storm. I have no clue what is coming up in the middle of the peddle. All of my MG have to be different, LOL. I do have a moonflower vine that is newly planted this year. It is covered in buds. I can't wait for it to bloom!!!!
i'm still waiting for my moonvine to bud... is that a double rose silk, kauai?
Maybe. The person who sent me the seed just labeled it Rose Silk?
is that a second set of petals in the center or is it just a camera malfunction? weird angle?
There are two more petals in the center
You look like you may have 'Henka Asgao', but definitely not 'Early Call'. Early Call is a solid medium blue.
kateliza_id,
What a Beautiful MG.
I'm very curious what you have - especially because of the Heart-Shaped Leaves. I agree with QueenB - definitely not Early Call, which has Tri-Lobed Leaves. Also, the Henka Asagao's that I have grown have all had Tri-Lobed Leaves as well.
QueenB, do any of the Henka Asagao's you have seen or grown have Heart-Shaped Leaves?
Now, where is that Ron when we need him??????
I haven't seen Henka Asgao except in photos, and it's best to contact Ron by private email here. You're more likely to get a quicker response that way.
Stacey
Hello,
I think the plant in question is one of the smaller blue yojiro types with a lighter than usual throat and lighter yojiro rays ...the heart shaped leaves I have seen before in the smaller yojiro types, but have only seen the larger Mt.Fuji in a heart shaped leaf form on a few Japanese sites that didn't translate well into English and I was not able to contact the posters of the plants...also considering that the yojiro types are a hybrid of Ipomoea nil and Ipomoea purpurea,it should be no big surprise that the leaf forms most usually associated with those species will come out eventually...additional variations in any part of the plant should also show up 'sooner or later'...
As to "Where is Ron(?),"... the answer is just not usually interested to post to the regular forums, more interested to respond by a private e-mail or to respond to pictures posted to the database(!),my choice(!) regarding how I prefer to share(!) and communicate...is that choice how I enjoy the GardenWebs allowable, acceptable and okay(?!)...I would hope so..,just like people like to pick their fights,I am 'picky' about what I feel like responding to,so there is my general disclaimer as per that aspect,...but, regarding the questions presented here,my view is as follows...
My experience with the Ipomoea nil mix "Early Call' is that the I.nil types contained in that mix will almost always have a trilobed leaf form,but,the gene for the heart(cordate) leaf form is (!) floating around in there and so heart shaped leaves can come out of the various "Early Call" mixes as offered by many different outlets...also heart shaped leaves may or may not show up in the first generation of seeds from the packet...It seems that only relatively recently that more people are actually becoming more interested in looking for 'different' leaf shapes and this may be contributing to the perception that all of the Ipomoea nil are trilobed,especially when grown together in an intertwined mass with other MG types...;
I have found that the colors that I have gotten over the years out of various "Early Call" mixes can vary...alot...I have gotten blues of dark, medium and light blue as well as different shades of most other colors that can potentially come out of an "Early Call" mix...I think the variables(!) are more prevalent (!) than what many people have come to accept as unvarying limitations...another version of the 'urban myths' as I see it...
The 'Chocolate/Rose" 'can of worms' is one that I may be interested to go into 'another' day...;
Hoping that my input may be of some value worth considering...
'That', (Emma Dearest, you have such a way with words!)..
Ron....
P.S. attached is a recent picture of a blue with a nice pure white throat, that came out of an "Early Call' mix...similar to what Stacey was reffering to...could this be the proto-type(!) that was used to create such monoliths as "Hama no Sora" and/or "Akatsuki no Umi"...(?!?!)....The 'true' answers may reside only within the limits of your imaginations(!?!)...
Hi Ron,
THANKS SO VERY MUCH, for your interesting information.
Your Early Call 'Blue', looks exactly [as best as I can tell] like the ones I'm growing this year.
Also, you will make BUNCHES of people happy if you could clear up the mystery of the differences between Rose/Chocolate Silks.
OK, my bad.....I won't say,
"Now, where is that Ron when we need him" anymore.....LOL
I promise!
Thanks again for your wonderful information -
now I need to go back and read it again to absorb all that you've said.
Emma
This is the only one of my mg's that just keeps on going, even though it is a small vine. This flower is so huge, that it draws your eye clear across the yard. DH even asked me this morning what it was. When I told him it was a morning glory, he didn't believe me.
The flower must be at least 6 in. across. I sure hope it makes seedpods, so I can plant a whole trellis with them next year.
