More Midwestern Lilies

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

American Dreams. I used Tazzy's technique of just putting the camera under this one and shooting. Hopefully it will be taller next year. I'm getting to old to bend down this far.

puddleofmud, I really like your lily - do you know the name?

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Cait, that lily of puddles was 'Shocking'.

Finally! A nice, big, delightfully smelly Oriental!

Several of my trumpet lilies (not sure which ones, 'Regale' maybe) were 7 1/2 to 8 feet tall this year. (Notice I said "were".) I was going to take a picture of them this evening. This afternoon we got the rain we so desparately needed plus high winds. Now I have several 5 foot flowerless stalks and snapped-off bloom stems that are 2 1/2 to 3 feet long. If anybody knows how to stake lilies that are over 6 ft tall I sure would appreciate hearing about it.

Moby, is it time to start a new thread? This one is taking a long time to load - even on high speed cable.

Moby, I'm drooling over your 'Friendship'. lol

So sorry to hear about your lilies, No H2O. Wish I knew how to stake them.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Why not? http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/524962/

I have a couple stakes that work for lilies that tall. One kind from a local nursery and the other from Earl May. I'll check on the brand names for you. This one is especially sturdy ~ and the green parts bend up to make it even taller.

Moby, I have a number of those flexi-stakes in various heights and I love them. I have never seen one tall enough for plants that are 7' and up. I do have some wooden stakes that are about 6' high once they are securely anchored in the ground but during high winds any stalk taller than 6' is likely to get snapped off, especially if it is full of blooms.

Thanks for the new thread. :^)

OK, how about this one with adjustable rings? This is on a nearly 6 ft. lily. Sorry, this was the best I could do in the dark! Can't remember the brand ~ came from Earl May but couldn't find anything online.

I have an idea.....stop growing them so tall!!!! (running and ducking for cover as I'm LOL!)

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

Maybe I could suspend nooses from the second floor windows and instead of staking them I could just suspend them. Hmmmm......

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

I use rebar. Not pretty, but strong.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

lol I like the nooses ~ they could sway with the wind.

Windfall (literally) from yesterday's storm.

oh well noh20, at least you got a nice display for inside. :)

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

Yes, and this morning there are a few bumblebees in the room. I think they must have been taking cover from the storm in some of the hollyhock blooms. LOL

Beautiful bouquet and you didn't even have to cut it yourself! Love the white lilies Cindy! Whites are my favorites.

Thanks Susan, did you get my email about Shiraz?

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Yes,. Thanks. I think that is probably what mine is. Or at least as close I'm going to come

They look very similar. The only think different I noticed in our two pics is that it looks like the pistol is a different color on each one. I don't know if that matters or not.

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

The bouquet has doubled in size thanks to yesterday afternoon's storms. I have to keep it in the basement because the scent is so strong it reminds my mother of funerals. We had more storms last night - I haven't gone out yet to see if they took anything else down. I am afraid of what I will find. LOL

Here is my American Spirit lily starting to bloom. Last year it was about 3 foot tall and had 4 blooms. This year it is about 6' tall and has 21 blooms. There is another shorter stem with only one bloom on it, that is so much shorter, you can't even see that bloom in this photo. Hopefully by next year, I will have 2 tall stems.

Susan, it is hard for me to tell from your picture but it looks like that lily is white and rose. I think American Spirit is supposed to look like this:

Where did you get your bulbs?

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

You right. I have the American Spirit in another location. This tall one is American Dreams. I got the bulbs from Jungs. Ordered some 2 falls ago and liked them so much that I ordered more last fall.
I'll have to move my marker.

Love that American Dreams!!!! That is my color for sure!!! Actually I love all of them!!! :). Have to check out Jungs, didn't know they sold bulbs!!!! Great pictures to boot!!!!
Have a great day all!!!

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

Susan, I was curious where you got them because I got mine from aknapp's co-op and some people are having problems with some bulbs being mislabeled. I am still waiting for mine to bloom.
