Dang It's Hot!!! How do you stand it!!! Tips Please

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Two summers ago when everyone, the world over, was dying from the high temps, we went on a camping trip to Drumheller, Alberta and Dinosaur Provincial Park. Now both are in a valley, that tends to get very hot normally (looks like a desert there), and when we pulled in late to camp they announced it was 145F there.....at the top it was 114F. We pulled out the next day.

Kaleem, in Pakistan, is in his usual heat wave for this time of year. I complained at 85 and close to 90: he had 125. I think he thinks I'm a sissy!

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Now we are at 70F (cold for this time of year.....feels like our fall weather conditions now). I'm finding it really hard since I had to shed my winter fur and was working on growing scales just a few days ago.

Kaleem is used to it. ;) Just like I'm more able to survive our winters........ I'd find him frozen solid if he came to visit during our cold snap...-52F with windchill last winter. ;)

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

This is funny because I asked him, last week, how cold it gets and if he ever gets snow: no snow but 0 degrees in November.

Just thing: from zero to 125 in 7 months!

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

I can ;)........we went 154 degrees in 6.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Here I am melting when it's 95 degrees, I can't imagine anything over 105, cause that's when you can't do anything but sit under an a/c. That's about the hottest it gets here and it doesn't stay that hot for long.

Whew!!!! 154 degrees in 6 months is horrible.

It's a shock to the system since our summer temps are usually around 80 to 90 but every second or third year we will get two to three weeks (usually later on) in the low 100's. And then there are the extremely rare summers, like last year, where I think I can only count 7 days that were in the eighties. :(

We also had a 20 year stretch where getting winter temps below -30F were very rare and short lived.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Lilypon - were you born to the area or did you move there to enjoy the extremes? :-))

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

LOLOL born here Pirl! As a child the winter came as a shock.....winter wear then was big, thick, bulky and didn't give. Now adults feel spoiled with the lightweight thermal wear that's available.

I love the change of the seasons......the winter/summer extremes however I could live happily without. ;) On the plus side our winter guarantees that venemous snakes, spiders and other nasty creatures won't be found here. Of course neither will many exotic plants. :(

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Lilypon: I always find it so interesting to see where people moved and why and which place they like more than another and the why's behind it.

We love the change of seasons, too, and would miss it so much if we were "stuck" living in San Diego. I'm sure we could all live without the extremes no matter how high or low they are. On the very bitter days my DH has relented and not taken the dogs out for their 3/4 mile way twice a day. He used to come home with frozen ears! Not me.

After I read about the gal and the snake in San Francisco I'm very happy to be exactly where I am. Hope they can just take me and put me in the compost when my time is up!

"Of course neither will many exotic plants. :("

That doesn't seem to stop you from trying though! I still get a kick out of your "Hawaii" bedroom! LOL

I suppose everything is relative. When I lived in Miami all my gardening was done with a machete' to keep the plants from invading the house. I moved here, 106 miles north, and have to worry about nights in the 40's in the winter. If you go out after the sun goes down you have to wear a sweater. But, even in Miami, there is a subtle change of seasons that if you live there long enough you are aware of.

My daughter had family over for supper last evening and served it on her covered patio. It was very comfortable with fans. Then suddenly the humidity shot up and everybody was heading for the A/C. That happens here when you are working outside. Humidity goes up and down and when it does you just have to throw in the towel....literally!

Or throw in the trowel!

So maybe I'm finally waking up after being up for more than four hours!

Mirpur (A.K), Pakistan(Zone 9b)

This year heat broke all the records and our brains are boiling with heat. In winter we can save our bodies with hot cloths but what can we do in Summer? We can only put off our cloths and not more than this. A/Cs are not working in this heat and in one province we have flood. Glaciers are melting with heat and got flood after this , rivers are full and people are helpless.
But after so many days today we have four hour rain and weather is much pleasant. Now we can take breath easily.
Kaleem

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Kaleem: none of us envy you the heat you have and the flooding! Now we should just be grateful but once we step outside into what we consider to be very hot and humid weather we all will want to be cooler.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Pirl you wrote: After I read about the gal and the snake in San Francisco

So I didn't read it, what's the story??

Judy

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Judy - I'll have to look for it and then try to do a link so you can read it. Still sends chills up my spine.

LOL. Don't be ridiculous. Of course there are four seasons in Florida: Tourist Season, Off-Season, Rainy Season and Hurricane Season.

This really does relate to Coleus. I just went out on the front porch to water the Coleus pots and a 2 FOOT RATTLER came slithering out of the pot right next to where I reached for the hose. Now I'm not usually such a ninny, but geez I about wet my pants. Calmly walked all the way to the backyard to get the shovel........I think maybe I hoped he would be gone before I got back. NOT.

He's in about 5 pieces and drying in the sun, thank you very much. Is it time for a cocktail yet?????

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Ha ha Dogzilla!!

Oh, back to the HOT topic... Yesterday I rode my motorcycle to work. Welll..... it was 92 DEGREES on the way home.. Was fairly OK until the traffic jam... Black bike, black helmet I was sitting there feeling like a moron. The tank was so hot it was burning my legs. Had to slide back a bit. I thought I was going to burst into flames! When I got home it looked like I had been laying out in Miami for a straight week.

Being a glutton for punishment of course I rode it again today. After being at work a few hours I remembered I have to take my laptop home today.... Won't that be fun???? I hate the walk from my office to the car with that thing and it's going to be on my back for an hour!

Nicole,

Trying to avoid the big race week in Daytona, back in '99, we ended up there during bike week. At one point I had to get out the camera:
the gal in front of us on the bike, on a hot day, had on her helmet, black leather jacket and only a black thong! She was about two axe handles wide! Are mirrors that scarce for people who wear thongs?

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Pirl,

An ax handle isn't really very wide, is it? Now the ones who really ought to see a picture of themselves are the ones that are big as 2 oak tree trunks wide wearing a thong. Go to Hollywood Fl beach anytime and you get to see this. Skin as brown and thick as leather, all the way up to the thong.

But I guess that's what they do for the heat.

:^)))

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

HAHA!!! Yea I've seen some crazy, NASTY things at some of the bike functions my husband drags me to. At one there was this poor drunk crazy woman running around with only her thong bathing suit bottoms on. She did NOT have the figure for it. I have been to Bike Week in Myrtle Beach a few times but now avoid it like the plague!! Too much craziness for me, guess I'm getting to old to run with the 20 somethings! Can't tolerate the wildness so much..

Nicole

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Molly - I guess I should have explained that it would be the type lumberjacks, in days of yore, used to use and you put it horizontally to measure the two ax handles. My guess would be a 50 - 60" circumference.

Arlene

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Whooopieeee!! It's going to be 93 degrees when I leave today!

HA

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Pirl,

I had no idea........................lol

molly

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Wonder why they even make thongs in sizes like that, in leather no less? Are the people who wear them deprived of mirrors?

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

OK folks, I had soooo much fun going home Friday! For starters, it was hot! Then, there were all the fourth of July travellers making traffic nice and slow.. THEN it rained and I had to sit under a bridge for 45 minutes. Made it to the next bridge up and had to stop again. Finally I just pulled into a restaurant and had dinner! Took me 2 1/2 hours to get home!

Hooray!

Nicole

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Sorry Nicole! Where were you traveling to that gave you such a glorious 4th!

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Oh me I was just trying to get home from work! LOL!!

Nicole

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

OOOOOOOOOOOOOh no!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What's the normal commute time?

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Nope! It's normally only an HOUR! LOL!!!! I plan on moving within 30 minutes of here eventually. Been doing the hour thing waaay too long! Almost 9 years now. Ick!

Nicole

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

A really good move. Gives you another hour of gardening Monday thru Friday!

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

You know that's right!! That's 10 hours a week! One in the morning and one in the afternoon!!

Tulsa, OK(Zone 7a)

you don't look over 40 the hair cut is so cute!!!!

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Whew!!! High today 97 heat index 110. Outside shower time!! We're up and rolling no later than 5, we aim for 4, so that we can get our outside chores done before we melt. Ice cream for breakfast cools us down afterward. It's a while before solid food seems like a good idea.

I always wanted a "hot body" but not this way!!!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Judy - "hot bodies", you betcha!

A neighbor just dropped by to pick up some plants and I had to keep on moving into the shade. We're getting up early, too, just to be able to stay out of the sun. The older you get the hotter it feels but it's always the humidity that's a killer, for us!

Had a spoonful of very cold tuna fish salad for breakfast. I can't eat a big breakfast anyhow (except for vacations!) but in this heat I don't even try.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Yesterday I went to Home Depot at lunch to pick up a few bails of pine straw. Can you imagine working outside like that on black pavement all day? I really felt sorry for those guys, that would kill me!!! I was sweating just standing there in the shade waiting to pay!

Nicole
