LOL, Pirl, I love him too, my sis in law has elvis all over her spare room LOL. But I don't think he was a gardening man, so I doubt that he mean that when he said. " I get hot every time " LOL
Dang It's Hot!!! How do you stand it!!! Tips Please
I think he meant dancing on stage. :)
Pirl,
Dear please try to remember my caution, you mustn't just tell everyone one that Elvis visits with you. People are just so prone to get the "wrong" idea.
Just came in from the asparagus bed: neighbor who watered plants while we were gone "forgot" to pick asparagus and she has a small bed of it herself so we know she likes it! Sixty three for compost! Sixteen for dinner!
Lordy Miss Clawdy - isn't that another of Elvis's? Well, Lordy Miss Clawdy it is darn hot out there. Finally remembered the bands that look like bandanas, soak in cold water - they have the water crystals inside and plump up after 10 to 15 minutes, then you squeeze them gently and wear it: it looks like a folded up bandana but swells up with the cold water. They said NO FREEZER on the instructions but I'll try the cold water way first and then I'll try cold ice water.
Judy: Elvis and I have a little deal worked out! I try not to let it slip out that he's coming to visit and, in return, he weeds for me. So, if you pass by and see a 70 year old man, balding, wrinkled, wearing a white studded jumpsuit try and keep your calm. He'll always be 20 and beautiful to me!
Elvis just left my farm :)
No doubt on his way to NY, he loves that girl Pirl!!!
oh man, what a waste of good eats. I just let mine go to fern, since they were so young LOL
Judy, I don't think it's any cooler in NY. As a matter of fact, I spoke with my mother in Massachusetts last night and it was hotter there than here in KY!
Well, Pirl, he wasn't much help here on the farm, kept insulting everyone, telling them they weren't nothin but hounddogs. He did, however, keep singing Kentucky Rain, but to no avail. It did not rain...
So I'll send him on to you and you can let him try on your Blue Suede Shoes or something
LOL :) Kathy
Oh me. I actually decided for some INSANE reason to curl my hair today. Waste of time! It's straight as a board thanks to living on the sun and the humidity! Maybe we could all move up with Weezingreens until it cools off! I am sure she could use the help potting up the babies!
Nicole
NC that is a great idea!!! I'm back out in the heat in just a minute, I've got trades to send out today. The humidity makes your straight and mine a frizzed up curly mess, hard to even get one of those big toothed combs through it.
Well Pirl, if El gets in your way just send him on back to TN I have some people to whom I want him to sing "You Ain't But A HoundDog". Then I'm in need of hearing his Amazing Grace!!! No other person has sung that song so well. I'm sure I can make his fried Peanut & Banana Sandwiches to his liking... yummmm they're good.
Judy
Judy - I have the Elvis cookbook, "Are you hungry tonight". I think the peanut butter and banana also had a pound of bacon. At least he did it his way and didn't miss out on anything but a long life, a lovely wife and a daughter: his choice.
I'm a straight haired person who curls against my better instincts but only after gardening and showering.
The cold band was garbage with just cool water so I put it in the dogs ice water and then forgot to take it out! Now Suga (no "r" - she's named after the gangsters gals) can wear it as Elvis sings Hound Dog to her because she is a sweet beagle. When he stays here it's always at the local Heartbreak Hotel at the end of Lonely Street.
Much to the surprise of many (if not all) we had "Love Me Tender" as our wedding song/first dance 14 years ago on 1/1/91.
My first husband wanted for the first song, "Strangers on the shore" - hint, hint! Last song I played for him was Frank Sinatra's little known, almost never played, "Think I'm Gonna Make It All The Way" - . . . ."I'm doing very well now, you can go to h-ll now, I think I'm gonna make it all the way" and I did!
And I came in at 2:30 because it's too darn hot - we're having a heatwave, a tropical heatwave!
Arlene
It has been in the high 90's over a week here. Our AC has been running continually inside and it is quite comfy;
However, we only enjoy it when sleeping as we come home from work and immediately head outside heat or not. Steve and I do a few light things then move to the shade and suddenly we feel cooler.
We'd rather be hot outside soaking up those precious moments before winter when we are back inside.
I don't want winter back again, not yet, and never another snowy one like the last one! Yikes. We should get a break from the heat and humidity tonight. Now it's 85 with a strong breeze but the humidity is high. We're on a peninsula that juts out into Southold Bay and I always feel we should be much cooler but it's just a hot old day here.
Whew starting to cool here today finally.... after a week in the 90s I am melting. Here is a shot of the radar in Michigan Bay City is "where the thumb meets the hand" http://www.intellicast.com/Local/USLocalWide.asp?seg=LocalWeather&loc=kfnt&prodgrp=RadarImagery&product=RegionalRadarLoop&prodnav=none&pid=none
Dog Gone you have a red/orange cell coming right at you!!!
Take care.
Judy
it's here... rainin' cats and dogs temps dropped about 10 degrees in the last few minutes. I love a good thunder storm.
Well I took that headband thing with the swollen water crystals out of the dogs water bowl and got goose bumps on my arms and legs in an air conditioned house! Now I'll try it outside and try to get a few more plants in the ground.
Well, I just got back from the farmers' market and it was hot. After a while we had a good stiff breeze and I had to hold things down, but I was thinking about some of these things. We arrived at 1:30 and had to sit in the van until 2:30 because it was severe thunderstorms going on around us. 60 mph winds! Then after the storm the sun came out so bright and boy was it humid!!! Maybe one of them swamp coolers would've been nice.
After a while people actually came out of their houses too and I sold a few things :)
:) Kathy
lol lol lol Country Music Radio station Kutzu 102, in honor of the high temperatures just played:

You have to read these words. ROTFLOL
Judy
yes, I know all about that :)
He could certainly liven things up in this neighborhood. Maybe the "biddies" would have something to talk about beyond my scarecrow.
I went out after dinner and got a few things done but it's still hot. Had to throw in the trowel!
ROFLMBO.....Pirl, you are too funny!!!
I think I'm addicted to Sluggo! Now, whenever I plant something and water it in I go and get the Sluggo. Hate those critters. Have a little styrofoam container hidden at the front of the big Hosta Plantaginea so I can use my trowel to deposit them. Boy did they want a piece of my dahlias! They were all over. I only dispose of them so I won't slip on them. Yucky! Does anyone know where I can get the 40 pound bags of them here in the northeast? Thanks for your help. Even in today's heat I knew I was weary and tired and should go in but I got my Sluggo out - actually Bug Geta this time. I don't worry about brand names since they all seem to work for me.
Judy C. had a thread about diatomaceous earth and slugs last year. It might be worth your while to research it or ask Judy if she tried it and if it worked for her. Where is Southold? I'm from New England originally, so when you live up there, everyone seems close by :) Kathy
-Coffee kills them but it takes 5 min or so.
-Coffee grounds (ask for these at commercial establishments which serve coffee) kills them if you just put them around the plants... desolves the slimy coating.
-DE gets them but you have to reapply after a rain... which is pretty often lately.
-Crushed egg shells cut into their slim coating
-Copper ring around a plant stem keeps them from getting on it.
-Jagged cut drink cans
-Crushed seashells.
Dang Pirl if you've got them real bad, just use every thing. I've used a combo of the first 4 just because they were handy or free. I've looked everywhere and have only found 2 newly hatched slugs this spring. I think the eggs can hatch out for years so I'm doing good.
Judy
Hi and thanks for all the good thoughts. I just don't have the spare time to keep reapplying anything. I'm even late by 2 weeks feeding my roses, which is why I'm up early. We're headed towards 90 again today and I'd like to get the rose garden DONE!
Kathy - we're way out on Long Island, North Fork (Wine Country), 14 miles before the tip at the ferry at Orient Point. We love it out here. Retired here in '92 - heaven! Where were you in New England?
Anyone for crabgrass? I have a ton of it in my veggie garden and back bed I can send you!! Too hot to get it out!! My mother in law was in my back yard last night and just shook her head.
Oh well... Maybe I can consider it a good ground cover to hold in moisture for my tomatos!
Nicole
Hi Pirl, I thought perhaps you were in Long Island. My FIL lives in Quogue, I suspect it's not far from you. I've never been there, but hear it is beautiful. I am from Berkshire County (Pittsfield) Massachusetts. All of our family still lives there, but we are the black sheep of the family, having moved away thanks to the Army and Ft. Knox.
Judy, glad to hear that your slug problems alleviated for the most part. I remember how disgusted you were with the whole thing. We don't have much of a problem, maybe here and there in the field, but our chickens take care of so much for us.
Have a great day. Kathy
Kathy - Quogue is about 35 minutes from us: FIL is south and we're north.
It's just so peaceful out here. One stop light on Main Road! Still pick up mail at the post office.
Read my slug bait box and this one was an oldie and can harm pets so I better return to Sluggo.
Pirl, I had a concern about that when I read your previous posts. So much stuff that is put on lawns today is harmful to pets and of course, being an organic farmer, I always try to lean towards the non-toxic things. :)
I have been coughing and sneezing ever since arriving home last night and I suspect that the tree trimmers/poison sprayers came back to our property after we left for farmers' market yesterday and sprayed Round Up on the electric line easements. They all know that we are organic and think it's funny if they get things by this. It doesn't last too long though, because we realize it and RoundUp will kill all of our veggies. Last year, a person that plants in the field across the road from us sprayed his field until he saw us out in the yard. It was a windy day and it started drifting (we could see it). he ran in his spray buggy as fast as his little tail between his legs could go...but we lost tomato plants because of it. If we start losing plants around the electric lines, we'll know and I assure you there will be a lawsuit this time!!!
So be real careful with those chemicals....and also remember whatever you put on your lawn could leach into your drinking water.
My FIL says it is wonderful in Quogue. He lives about a mile from the ocean; I've seen pictures, but never been there as I've said. One day, we will visit him and I'll pay you a visit :)
I've had a good chuckle with this thread. It's hot and humid today (what else is new here in Fl) going outside feels like stepping into a sauna. I can't stand it, that's why I rarely garden during the summer. My yard becomes a jungle full of overgrown plants and weeds. I just returned from a trip to Oregon, the weather was lovely with temperatures in the 60's and a few days in the low 70's. I could do a lot of gardening in weather like that. I would move there in a heartbeat if I could.
Pirl, I had a horrible problem with slugs and snails. I tried just about everything and nothing worked. A friend got tired of hearing me complain about the problem and gave me a box of Escar-Go from Gardens Alive (an organic mail order company). It did the trick. Last summer, I sprinkled it all around my beds and I haven't seen a snail or slug since. It's worth giving it a try. BTW say hi to Elvis for me!! LOL
I'm so embarrassed that I'm replying so late but Elvis just left the building! He's so cute!
Yesterday 85 and this morning 60, now up to 62: the radio weather said we'd hit 89 but I haven't seen the sun once, so far. I was freezing in the Rose Garden and think I did less than if it was hot and I was anxious to be inside!
It's not that I have a huge slug problem but I didn't want to lose a dahlia or any of my clematis to them. At least bunnies do give pleasure when they're out there running and leaping - I am aware of what it's all about and it's fun to watch them. On the other hand I've never seen a cute slug and don't care to see one. I even find the boxes these slug baits come in repulsive - I'd like to cover mine with brown paper!
Judy must be hear somewhere - please help - earwigs running wild! Help!
I hate using any sprays and one fungicide we bought says plainly on the label, "CAUSES BLINDNESS" - not just MAY cause blindness. No rose is worth THAT price! I probably do violate the organic rules by using 5-10-5, Epsom salts?, Ironrite? For the most part we go organic, especially with our 6 huge bins of homemade compost.
Misty/Kathy - I'd sue the pants off of them. If they actually know it and you can prove they know it, then they're at fault. I'd even Fed Ex them (and your sweet uncaring neighbor) a letter expressing your concern so you have proof that you've warned them. Grass can be killed by covering with black plastic held down with a few bricks: no poisons needed.
I'd be glad to meet you!
Arlene
Finally the rain quit by Saturday and I have no excuse not to get outside to paint those houses. I started with the garage door project this morning, Got the base coat on and found the top coat color wasn't right. Cleaned up, went back to the paint store and got that qt fixed and bought supplies for other jobs this week.
Went home to drop off the signs, paint and pick up some Penetrol. Soooo hot, 2:30 hottest part of the day. I know, will stay here in the a/c until 4:30 or 5:00 then go back and finish that garage door.
Any day that I paint exteriors during the summer, I start early and quit by 2. Because of the heat. Only 6 hours of work, but it really wears ya out.
I hear tell, in some other cultures, people work in the morning, take 3 or 4 hours off, then go back to work later in the day. It sounds good to me........if I can drag myself away from this computer and the a/c
LOL
Molly
My father was a self-employed roofer and tinsmith so I will never forget how wiped out he was at the end of the hot days, especially on a hot black tar roof!
He was German but so dark skinned. When he'd take off his t shirt he really looked like he still had it on. Such a wonderful person!
My nephew does roofing, he and his crew in Atlanta GA start their day at 5:, or daylight, whichever comes first, and they quit noon. It's hot up on those rooftops!. When we had our house painted last year, they always started on the shady side and worked their way towards the shade all day. It was done early in the year and the paint crew was already farmer tanned, except for the poor blonde guy who was simply peeling away.
Ah yes, the farmer gal is me and others like me with the fair skin and blonde hair. I start gardening in March, weather permitting, and have had years where I've burned and even had sun poisoning but the nice part about growing older is that the skin seems less sensitive or maybe I just time myself better.
My husband gets skin cancer (I've had it but not a great deal) and he uses the sun block 50. My father lived until past 84 and never had it at all. My husband's father worked 10 stories underground and had it 19 times.
We were just at 102.4F here (now back down to the 70's for a little while).....I watered first thing in the morning, at lunch, and when I come home from work. The days we hit the nineties, and above, I kick myself that I have anything growing in pots.
How do y'all get so hot so far north? We *may* have had a 90 degree day this year, but it would only be one or two. What's going on here?
pins the heat and humidity was sent up from the Gulf of Mexico and Texas (the storm that went thro the Gulf recently sent it here). This time it only lasted four days....two summers ago we had the pleasure of it's company for 3 long sweltering weeks (no air conditioning in my house :(. The rain was courtesy of a system from California that was pushing all the storm cells from the States into Alberta and then into Saskatchewan and now it's crossed all the remaining provinces and is out in the Maritimes (Bermuda high is also make them swelter there).
Saskatchewan and Manitoba can and do get as hot as the American mid west states.....it's just the humidity that is not normally present here (we usually dry bake when August rolls around;). We've reached Canadian hot spot temps up to 117F (but without humidity).
When I checked in here on June 15th I should have mentioned that my father was a roofer and never used sun block, never had skin cancer and still lived to almost 85.
On Cape Cod I bought the items soldiers in Iraq seem to want, per the radio: It is a folded up bandana with those water crystals inside. You soak it in ice water, not the freezer, and put it on: goosebumps!
I think they were about $5.00 each.
