Dang It's Hot!!! How do you stand it!!! Tips Please

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Other than just staying inside period, please give me some tips on how I can stand this heat. I'm tempted to put black plastic over my little garden patch and never admit I tried to be a gardener. It's 92 F with a heat index of 97 .... Boy Howdy, that's hot!!!

Most of my plants are wilting some, the Brug are wilting a lot and even a refreshing drink did not perk them up.

Judy

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I mixed water crystals in most of my brug pots and keep them in partial shade. So far, so good but our heat has only been that high this week. I have red about some neat head/neck bands made with those crystals too. We have not turned the heat on yet but we run and jump in the pool OFTEN!

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

LOL, your gonna shoot me, here, LOL but When I'm hot , sweaty, and just can't get any further, but want to, I go jump into the pool with all my clothes on HE HE, !!!!
then I walk around the yard dripping wet, working, and I feel so much better, or if youcan't jump into the pool, it helps to run the water hose over your neck, and let the water run into your shirt, it's amazing how you stay cool doing this.

Ok, going to jump into the pool now.

Golden, CO(Zone 5b)

Here's a tip. Come visit me. It's been 45 to 47 degrees all day.

Decatur, GA(Zone 7a)

Hey, Judy, you can come south. Here it rains everyday and we barely make it into the 80's. When the temps rise, the thunderstorms roll in. I'm waiting for the sun. (Reminds me of Beatle tune somehow.)

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

good grief terre_ how do you stand that kind of temps all the time, does it ever get hot. how far up colorado are you?

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

I was tempted to peel off the clothes but all the rain washed the ticks down from the trees so I came to my senses real quick. We're trying to mow so we can put out poison.....again. That's what we get for building a house in the woods, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

Kathy & Badseed - I don't have a pool, one of my critters would be sure to drown, however I've got a water hose.

Terre_ that's my kind of weather. I'm outside in a short sleeve t-shirt and pants, no coat etc when the temps are like that here. I'm hot natured!!

Pins - I don't even want to hear that... plus Mother Nature is watering your plants for you.

I could set up a sprinkler so I could run through it like a kid.. my teeth just set on edge thinking about the temperature differential between my body and water from a hose.......Whoooo Doggie

Victoria, TX(Zone 9b)

97? HAH! That ain't hot ... :) *giggle*

Try Heat Index of 101-110 F - standard for South Texas in June.

I drink TONS of water, and dont' rush in and out of A/C. Each time you get into A/C, and come back out, I think the "hot" feels hotter.
Work outdoors early in the morning, or late in the evening. Take plenty of breaks, stay outside, get in the shade, and drink cool, not ice cold water.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

AngelSong, please don't invite me down, I'd hate to hurt your feelings but I knowingly would not visit anywhere with a standard heat index of over 100.

Do you at least have a good breeze?

Judy

Golden, CO(Zone 5b)

Actually, Kathy_ann, I'm not. I'm in the western suburbs of Denver. We just had a cold front go through. We've already been in the mid 90s and will easily hit that and more. We just have some wide fluctuations. We don't take the studded snow tires off because we're lazy, it's because we never know when we will need them! Even July.

Judy, I turned the heat on! 45 is only warm in January. In June, it's too cold.

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

judy,
I feel for ya!! I am a 'hot box', too! Our heat pump is broken, so no central air yet! I ususally wait til June to turn it on anyway. Gotta go to Wally world and buy some of those $70.00 window units. We can have it fixed when DH's pay kicks in- PTL!!
Me and my fat little dog have been doin' some sweatin' and pantin', I tell ya! I don't have a pool either, so the hose is my best friend in the summer heat.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

I'm too old to wear halter tops..... but no one other than the Postman normally just drives up to visit.

I'm thinkin' .......

Youre never too old to wear a halter- LOL!!
I have heard of folks taking a box fan out in the yard with them. Gotta have a long extension cord, though. Elvis used to sunbathe with a fan blowing on him.

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

well, honey you don't want to wear a halter top around my mail man, he's a dirty old man to say the least LOL. his eyes are always in the wrong place, and I often wear only what I have to around the house when I'm working outside, LOL, he comes up andblows his horn, and won't get out of the vehickle, waits for me to come up there, so here I am hiding all the important parts from him so he doesn't get a eye full, which is probably why he waits , and just doen'st drop it off. LOL, I tend now to look decent at l2:00 noon just for the mail man.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

ROTFLOL That's what I did when I thought about my grouchy mailman.

Kathy all I can say is you must be one hot looking woman cause it's too hot out there for any man to be interested unless you're extraordinary!!

That's a laugh, I use to be hot when I was 21 and didn't have any babies.

There's just something wrong with my mail man that's all LOL

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

lol lol Don't dare let him see you in a swimsuit!!! You won't be able to get rid of him. lol lol

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

no chance of that happenin, I have his mail time down pat. LOL I rarely swim in a swim suite anyways , I just go in my shorts and tee shirt

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Kathy - That would probably be worse!!!!

Berrygirl - Elvis had that right!!! Sorry about your a/c, been there and done that. Glad your DH got his old job back!! God Bless you both.

Judy

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

THANKS judy!!

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

Dang!! My mailman is a femailman..and I'd hate to frighten her.

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

ROFLMBBO!!

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

Well, Judy, I guess your right LOL I haven't gone to get a package dripping wet yet though .

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

We're getting a break in the temperature, today the high is only suppose to be 83 with 80% chance of thunderstorms!!! I hope we at least have cloud cover all day.

I'm wearing baggy beachcomber pants with as brief a top as possible but nothing else!!! The below minus those garments which don't show anyway. I'll have a shirt nearby in case anyone comes to visit.

Yall probly know I am a house painter. I do interiors and when it's not raining I do exterior 1 story's. Most of my customers have swimming pools (good thing). Part of my proposals for the jobs include the proviso that I have clearance to jump in the pool when needed.

I had a customer down in Coral Gables who needed his roof done. Until I got that white paint put on, it was HHHOOOOTTTT.
I wear painters whites, my top being a t-shirt with my name on it.

I would come down from the roof to cool down in the pool. Customer was working from his home office behind sliding glass doors. No doubt in my mind he was watching when I came out of the pool.(can you say "lech"?) Wet t-shirt contest...of one. But just immersing myself in the water brings my temp down to a manageable level and I can get back to work.

Judy, for those of us who don't have our very own pools, I like to keep a misting wand close by. It tends to cool things down a touch without getting drenched and not using a whole lot of water (good for those of us who pay for it by the gallon coming in and going out).

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

I don't get out much so tell me what a misting wand is.

I have a plastic snake shaped thing that stands up about 3 feet, that I use to mist the Bullies, is this the same thing??

Judy

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I leave the hose end close to the front porch or leave a sprinkler running about the time my mail man comes. He is bald and the sun cooks his little head. :) He likes to spritz himself at friendly homes. LOL

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

We should all, except Kathy, send an email to the Postmaster General thanking him for the fine people who deliver our mail through all sorts of weather. I know we get ticked at them but they certainly are a wonderful group of people.

When it's really hot, I wear a wet cloth (like a bandana size) over the back of my neck. It soon heats up, but if you remove it and (using one end) fling it around in the air rapidly a few times, the rag becomes chilled again.

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Yep Judy, you already have a misting wand, thats exactly what that thing is.

Down in Key West, walking around "Old Town" you can pass by any number of restaurants and bars that have misting tubes run overhead over the tables. They throw a light mist and surprisingly, the people sitting under them don't even appear to be wet, but it keeps things cooler.

I had a hair trim about a month ago, she took off about 1-2 inches, cut blunt. It's still long though. About a week ago I went to the trouble of blow drying and styling it. I walked out the front door and the humidity hit, it went back to wavey/curly. I give up. Let it dry from the shower that way. With all this rain, it don't pay to make the effort.

When I was younger (I think that was last year) I didn't have curly hair, but it is now! What's that about?

Molly
:^)))

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

Not sure, but a friend of mine went through chemo, lost all her hair, and it came back in curly. Hard way to get curly hair....

Decatur, GA(Zone 7a)

I got curly hair the same way - chemo. No more perms, but not the route I'd recommend. lol

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

That certainly is a tough way to do it. :^(((

That wasn't the way of it for me tho. I showed my son my Senior Picture from high school. He said he figured I ironed my hair to make it straight back then, (34 years ago). Shoot, we didn't even have blow dryers back then.

I guess my hair is just changing with my age. All I can figure.

:^)))

Judy, I feel for you. It's been very hot and very humid here too. I have a fan on the back patio (I have an outdoor extension cord for the mower). I used it last summer. I put it on a milk crate and besides keeping me cooler it kept the bugs away. I put paper towels in a zip lock bag and pour in witch hazel. I keep it in the fridge. I wipe myself down and it's very refreshing, especially if there is a breeze.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

elsie, interesting idea the witch hazel. I've never used it. Absolutely worth trying.

I have curly hair with friz, always been that way and oh so easy. Of course it helps that my priority has never been on how I look. When we were in our late twentys I met my sisters at TGI Fridays for brunch. The oldest handed me her purse and said "P l e a s e go put on makeup, you are an embarrassment" I just responded by saying, "Well then compared to me you'll really look good" and handed the purse back to her. lol lol

Ain't life what you make it!!!

Judy

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

You know, I"d have to hurt my sis if she said that to me. LOL

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

It didn't bother me any. Lord Kathy I would put on makeup and 5 minutes later I would have wiped my face and smeared half of it, so the only time I wore it was when I was playing executive with a National Corp, otherwise I didn't bother. When I was younger the men still chased me and all of them said it was because I smiled so easily... happy person. To tell the truth, old men still follow this old woman around.... lol lol lol My DH just laughs.

Judy

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

I don't wear the make up either, everybody else does wear it to church, I don't even wear it to church, I'm just a country girl who doesn't like to dress up LOL

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Anybody here take a water pill for high blood pressure? I just started about a month ago and ever since our weather went from 60 to near 90 this past week I feel like I'm on fire and melting if I go out in the sun. The other day I was watering the flowers late in the afternoon and barely made it back into the air conditioned house. I actually felt sick. I don't usually tolerate high heat and humidity too well to begin with but I've noticed a difference with the water pill. I've been stuck in the house for two days already because of the heat. I have to do all my gardening in the early evening hours after dinner. Luckily we've had some brief but substantial rain showers so my babies get watered. Amazing how fast things grow after rain! Weatherman is promising 70's later this week. Can't wait!
