My new favorite ground cover is Verbena. I still use mulch around other plants because of the heat here and it helps retain the moisture. But, the Verbena has to have direct contact with the dirt to put in new roots to help substain the whole plant.

They get to be 2' x 2' mount. Their color is very striking.
