Coming soon: Davex Garden Box

A little known fact about DG is that it was not originally created to be the community-oriented site that it is today. In fact, it was originally created to be a personal trading list/tracker tool for myself. Due to the special features I had, DG was originally limited in that it could only be used by those who used Linux, rather than Windows or MacOS.

An idea was first hatched in early 2001, when a flood of new members discovered DG. These users were attempting to use incompatible operating systems, such as Windows and MacOS, in order to use Dave's Garden. In order to accomodate these new users, I scrambled to make concessions for them. Therefore, the DG that we all see today is widely crippled in order to accomodate these users. Why, the original DG almost read my own mind! Ahh, those were the days.

Well, what is the solution? We need to get everyone onto Linux.

For the past 4 years, we have been hard at work developing an entire new computing system made specifically for the purpose of using Dave's Garden, running a special flavour of Linux that we are calling "Davex". The box will retail for $399 (without monitor) and will be a computer with one purpose in life: using DG. When you boot it up, it will come up directly into a webbrowser and that's it. The webbrowser will be able to access any website, except GardenWeb and those other sites that are listed in the strictly filtered list managed by the prudes at DG Admin HQ.

Once I have converted the entire population over to Davex boxes, I will begin work at re-integrating the Linux-specific code back into Dave's Garden. Additionally, work is ongoing for the BigSensor Keyboard, which will only work on Davex boxes.

Our goal is to have the entire DG population converted by April 1st, 2007, at which time we will completely convert the site back to its August, 2000 state. Users still using Windows or MacOS will be left out in the cold.

We will begin taking orders for the box in 3 weeks. Texas residents please add 2.5% sales tax.

It's an exciting new era for DG!

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

p.s....guess now would be a good time to say "uh huh"

From what I have been able to read, the new Davex box will run exclusively on electricity generated by hamster and squirrel labor.

This is not only a more environmentally responsible source of power but it also gives those furry little creatures a greater sense of worth and purpose here on earth.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6a)

If the prudes at HQ are managing the filter list, then this system will be top drawer stuff!

Put us down for 2 please.

Northern California, CA

Dave we don't have electricity here at our place. Do you have plans to make available a solar powered version of this new product?

Dave,

I am going to have to ask, can we use free BSD or will it strictly be a Linux environment? Furthermore, will you be using the standard Linux kernel or a new Davex kernel?

These sound like exciting changes!

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

What about people who access Dave's while at work?

Will they no longer have the ability to access DG?

Judy

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Why not? You know we'd do anything for you Dave :)

Victoria, TX(Zone 9b)

Let's load the wagon, and forget about the mule .. *cough cough*

Everyone, check the date on your calendar. :)

Can we invest in this new adventure of yours Dave?
I'm an investor and need a sure Deal for a Tax write OFF......... ;-)

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Judy, I suspect a lot of employers would be happy to know DG will no longer be available from workplace computers. Imagine the productivity gains that will take place when people can't log in from work any more :o)

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

Imagine all the grumpy people mumbling/chanting I need Daves I need Daves I need Daves. Walking around with a lost look in thier eyes.

Crossville, TN

Are you going to set up a fund for those of us who can't afford the price? No? Well, I guess I better plan a big yard sale...can't do without Dave's. LOL Jo

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Jerome, MI(Zone 5b)

Gee, do you think so...I was going to order 4..one for each hand and foot...to use...because DG, is so full of great things I need to use all I can.

So you are saying that once I run "DaveX" code named "YouWillBeAssimilated" on my computer I cannot use "GardenWeb V0.000000001b" code named "FreeTripToDisney" anymore?
Note that I heard rumors of a "GardenWeb V0.000000002" currently in Beta testing code named " I'll_Be_Back " which is supposed to include a utility named "Destroy_The_DG_Collective" that erases "DaveX" and installs itself onto the computer with a new feature called "TenEasyWaysForTimesharesBeforeWeSendYouToDisney".

Just wanted to let you know :)

I have already written out and mailed my check. You mean this is a joke? Oh, well. Dave, just deposit it into your personal account and buy whatever you want.

Spokane Valley, WA(Zone 5b)

Oh no, I think I may have recycled a prototype Davex Box! It could hardly run Windows, and had a definite hum, resembling "Deep in the Heart of Texas"...

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

I take everything at face value.... but I love being a fool about April.

Plants go outside, new beginings, new ideas, moderate temps...

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Dave, I hope you will also work on an exclusive PDA version so we can still access from work - or wherever we are. In addition to squirrel and hamster power, how about compost?

Temecula, CA(Zone 8b)

Can I install it on my on my Commodore64?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Wasn't that a rock band? (chuckle....)

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

The first thing I thought when I saw the photo...was...what is that hill logo??!!! Please do not make it our new logo!!! Please!!!

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

Wellllll ... heck Dave ... If you'd have mentioned that methane gas
would've been an alternate power source for the Davex Box - I'd've
prolly caught on a wee bit sooner!! ... Dagnabbit!!
(*whoppin' maseff a good'un!*)

LOL ... MITEY GOOD'UN ... mr. 'next' president !!

Always heard that a good laugh never hurt anybody - but, by crackity ..

Hombre, Howie and I would like to become authorized resellers. How about it? :)

Happenstance, wonder if you can plug it into a couple of potatoes for power.

Valinda, CA(Zone 10a)

Dave, you had me for the first couple of paragraphs and then, I got it.

Newport, NH(Zone 4b)

Dave you got me SO good. I was so confused and disappointed!! I was seriously down for awhile. Then it suddenly struck me what day it was. Kudos and touche and every other choice word that you deserve!! ; )

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

tee hee heee heee.......I'll take 12, Dave. One for each room so I'm not without DG where ever I may go in my home. Actually make that 17 (one in each bathroom and outside for when I'm in the garden).

Do you take Discover?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Hey, aren't you going to do a laptop version?

With our wireless network, I don't need 12 of boxes, I can just take the laptop from room to room to outdoors, then back indoors, etc.

Norwood, MO(Zone 6a)

What fun! You had me til I enlarged the photo... lol ...

gardenwife -

Since you are so knowledgable about computers and their workings perhaps you could give me some advice about the new box Dave will be building for us.

I was thinking of using a "current" bush as a power source. Which of these do you think would work best?
