okus- our DGS plays soccer too = funny - a herd of boys chasing the ball. The first year he played, he was always at the back of the pack - I don't think he kicked the ball for several games. Then when he got brave enough, he would take a mighty kick and completely miss it!! Finally toward the end of the season, he became half way decent. In the little kids game, no scores are kept, but I tell you, those kids keep scores!! They even played games in the rain (I prayed for thunder as then they were cancelled!!)
Darius - new digs look great - did you say it was connected to another brick building? You'll just need to get some huge pots out front to put your flowers in! What's the word on your sister's daughter - is she coming to live with you guys? That trip thru the mountains sounds scarey = that's the part of driving to Florida that I always hated.
My 81 yr old parents are driving home to Mich from Flor - you might want to stay off the roads for another day! DD drives without concern of other drivers - just takes off. I refuse to ride with him. He is so stubborn - won't let us drive him down or back= insists on doing it himself. Thank goodness he is a real slow driver, but I worry that HE will cause an accident! They keep saying that this will be their last year, but when the next year comes - off they go again!
Sun is peeking up over the horizon, and I am antsy to get outside and see if the wind is calm enough to move the greenhouse...Save me a cuppa joe!!
Coffee and...part 11 :-D
Darius, the location sounds terrific! Lots of foot traffic so people will remember where you are, building looks nice, hope it works out. As handy as you are with tools it won't take long to get the upper in shape.
Ugh! the time change. Had to reset my coffee maker, and it's just so frustrating, because it doesn't like having the time changed. Have to reset the whole shebang, strength, warming time, warming temp., auto on to get it brewing early.....ARGGGHHHHH...and of course, it didn't go on this morning so I was coffee-less until it finally brewed, and now I have to go reset the whole #%@$#%^# thing again.
Can't stay long, going out for breakfast, but I'll check back later to see if somebody has put out some munchies! Oh dear, they just opened a Wedding cake shop up the road a bit, and now she's put out a sign saying she has pastries and coffee. I need a laptop. LOL
Morning every one, had a very bad rain storm last night lost electricity for 4 hours, so I had to set all the things you mentioned. Meezer, anyway. I do have an anique grandfather clock at least I knew what time it was plus an hour.
It was so dark when the lights went it was like being blind you would think I know the floor plan of my house and where the furniture is, but no, kept crashing into things while trying to find a flashlight and the more I groped around the more confused I got LOL
Today the sun is out, the grass is suddenly green and finally I see the scilla popped open, such a lovely little blue flower.
Maria
Carol...those are two great kids! I have to agree it's super when a kid is still 'wise' enough to cheer for the other team. LOL Looks like everyone had a good time.
Darius...that looks like quite a nice piece of property, especially for the price. And to have that much space seems like a good deal. You say the lower level opens to a parking area? That sounds good too. I love that you have windows to the sidewalk. I don't know what it is, but stores without display areas never made much sense to me. Unless, of course, you're worried about heating all that glass. (Hey, that trip through the mountains doesn't sound like much fun to me. I'd have been scared 'spitless' in that situation.)
I *hate* daylight savings time! It takes my weeks on end to get back in a routine after losing that hour. I think I'm more attuned to the sun than the clock. LOL
Kooger thanks for the sedum. I'll try really hard to remember to remind you. Maybe someone here will jog my memory (hint hint hint :-D) next weekend.
DH is 'grumbling' again...I don't know what it is but when he walks in the door and I'm either on the phone or typing on the keyboard, I always feel as if I'm doing something wrong. (You want to talk about 'controlling'? hehehe) I think it may have something to do with the ...."Oh, you're on the....." line he never fails to add to his conversation *before* he even starts talking. tsk tsk tsk. Shame upon me. LOL)
Yesterday, I dug up a new flower bed, paint-marked out several more, and began the earnest planning of where to plant what. All of a sudden the garden became a 'reality' instead of a vague illusion floating somewhere over my head. (Of course, I'm a little stiff after digging and shaking the dirt from the grass clumps...but that's *good* for me.)
Well...we're off to dig up a few clumps of Miscanthus from a piece of property down the street...and a few more yucca plants. (Yes, I have permission. :-D)
See y'all later...OH there's a Lemon Merange (sp?) pie on the counter...feel free to indulge. I certainly don't want that temptation sitting around where I can get my fork into it for very long. LOL
~julie~
Ahhh, Julie... I'm a sucker for lemon meringue pie! Better hide it from me after I get a slice!!!
Terrible winds here, too, all last night. My outdoor swing flew away as is in the pond. Up on my deck, a birdhouse sitting atop a rhoderdendron post is down the stairs taking a small table and a hanging suet feeder with it. Plastic pots are scattered all about.I
It snowed all day but didn't stick until about 6 p.m. and as soon as it started sticking, the snow stopped. I didn't get any sleep for all the banging noises. I think several dead limbs hit the roof. Can't believe how loud that is.
We also lost electricity about 3 a.m. I was sitting at the computer playing spider solitaire. Thank goodness there was some glow from the propane heater so I found my way to the phone and called the membership co-op and went to bed. I think the power came back on about 6 a.m.
Despite all that, I was able to plant an oval pot with tuberose bulbs and will put them out soon. Other than that it was a boring, long day, trapped inside watching 3 hours of a poker tournament.
The sun is out today but the wind is still vicous.
Uck! to those experiencing the wind storms. They're awful! When we have high wind, it wakes me up all the time because our bedroom is on the west end of the house. The birds woke me up this morning - in the eaves, finding nest building supplies. It's so screechey/scratchy sounding, sometimes almost like the fingernails on the blackboard thing, shiver! shiver! Guess it's eave cleaning time.
I'm so exhausted still - I hope I get more relaxed at the job soon - I couldn't get up this morning for church. And I'm still whipped. I keep dreaming about processing calls and trying to get them right. grrrr!
My sympathies to the Catholics around the kitchen table this morning. You've lost a good man!
darius - now that I'm actually awake, lol, that bldg really looks nice. Those windows have great appeal, you'll have to get creative in making fun displays. I like how the door is set-in some, it draws a person in and makes them feel welcome. Yup, some big pots of flowers out front..... you'll have it made in the shade! Just looked again, maybe that door isn't set in? The darker colour around it makes it appear that way. To me, the place looks homey. I sure hopes it works out for yous. (PS. I agree, the trip isn't one I'd care to repeat! Glad your home safe!)
And I will definitely have a big piece of Lemon Meringue Pie - that's my favourite pie (as long as the lemon is homemade- lol) but if someone is a meringue lover, I'll gladly trade my meringue for their lemon!!!!!!!!! I haven't had any takers on that offer since I left home, one of my brothers gladly took me up on that offer - always thought he was a mite 'touched'. LOL
Tonight we're going out for pizza for youngest DS's birthday - it was last Sun but we weren't home. I better bake him a cake this aft too. Sweet sixteen and all that stuff. Means I have to take him to the courthouse and get his license too. That's the last one, survived all 4 learning to drive. It's always my job b/c DH is too 'order-ey', they won't drive with him unless they really, really wanna go somewhere. :)
have a good day all!
Morning GOBs,
Gosh I'm stiff this morning and I think my face caught the sun yesterday - its a funny shade of pink and the skins all dry and tight. thats what comes of watching soccer games!
Aria we had a great time in the UK, caught up with the English grand kids and spent some time with old friends. It wasn't the weather for sight seeing really. We went to Crufts too, and had a reunion with our dear old dog, who is now 12 and too old to take the journey to Texas. He is obviously happy and enjoying life with our friends but I do miss him dreadfully.
Darius, sounds like a good deal to me too, but a lot of work! If there is ground floor access to the living area that is good. Stairs are a real problem as we get a little longer in the tooth. Hope it all works out.
Woodspirit that weather sound s awful. We had the winds and rain a couple of days ago, but not like that. Here at least when it calms down the temp runs back up into the 70s.
Save some of that Lemon Meringue pie for me girls, I'll be back later. I'm off to find some good stuff to brighten the front yard now.
Carol
One day I'll learn to check the typing before I post!

okus, I have such a bad time remembering sunblock, that I have resolved to just put it on every morning like lotion or moisturizer during the warm months of the year.
darius, if you and your sis are going to have a business, then I guess this building would make sense. I hope it is near an upscale community. Are you raising birds to sell or are you having a shop with items to attrack and house wild birds?
Of course, the little victorian I mentioned has a store on the same property and more land, but it is more expensive than the building you found. Of course, the price is negotiablel. Brevard is definitely upscale now. All the old businesses in town, drug stores, dime stores, etc. are now antique malls, coffee shops, art shops, etc.
Woodspirit, I think you are trying to lure Darius to your neck of the woods. teehee I don't blame you, she'd be a great addition to any neighborhood. ))
Darius, me too, I think it's great it has both upper and lower entrances. Nifty looking structure and a lot of your plants are already in pots ??
lem meringue my favorite too, as long as it's not too sweet. I've an old friend visiting for a short while. It's nice, like she never left town.
Okus, sunscreen
hehehe I *knew* I spelled it wrong...just didn't look right. But who has time to *think* when typing? LOL I'm so glad I could come with something everybody likes. (Actually, it was a Marie Callender pie (...ah shoot...can't spell that either!) It sure tastes like it's made with Lemon curd filling.
Nice and busy in here today. Sorry some of you guys are getting nasty storms. I'm sure ours are on the way. This time last year we were literally swimming with standing water in the yard. But, so far, this year has been pretty dry. I hope it's not a omen of things to come. I really hate drought living these pines. Talk about a tinder box!
Well...we got the yuccas moved but DH was too tired to get the Miscanthus so that will have to wait until tomorrow. I moved some antique iris into my new flower bed along with the daylilies DH bought. Now I just have to wait until my seedlings are strong enough to put outside and that bed will be full. LOL There's still more to fill and more to dig. I came real close to planting my cannas...but it's way too early to take the chance on freezing the tubers.
Ooo OO...ooo! Yesterday I marked out several new flower beds and painted in an arbor that I'd like to have between my north garden and patio area and the rest of the backyard. This morning DH asked me what the arrows I'd painted were for. I told him that is where I'd like to have a nice big arbor with pink climbing roses on it. A couple of hours later he said "We'll need..." and gave the materials list. I'M GOING TO GET IT!!! :-D I figured I'd have to wait at least until next year to talk him into building it for me. What a *great* surprise!
Well...coffee's gone and I want to go back outside for a while before it gets too cool to be comfortable.
See y'all later!
~julie~
Whew - I thought Sundays were a day of rest!!! We finally landed the greenhouse in the spot where it will stay -forever I hope. DS dropped over and we put him to work. He is a whirlwind kinda guy. DH is slow and a thinking guy. It is funny to watch the two together. Anyhow, got the greenhouse on its foundation and two of the four shelves in and I JUST LOVE IT!!
Then we went to the home improvement store to get wallboard for DS (we have the truck) Returned to their house and spent the rest of the day - it is good to be home again, I am bushed!!
I've had a 4 day binge of junk eating - even went to Wendy's twice this weekend - tomorrow is a new day and I am going to be back on the wagon and be a good girl.
Weather was sunny and kinda cool, but better than snow!! Supposed to warm up nicely by Tues, then rain for the rest of the week. Things are really poking up around here and sure makes a body feel better!
Well, gotta sign off as my mom is on the road home and we've already missed one of her calls - she left a message that they were in a mess in Tennessee - bad weather down there??
I'll pass on the pie even tho I'd love a piece..
Sarv, I'm also bushed. We have spent all day helping DS fix several problems with his fence.Like it was old and falling down and had nails sticking out.
When he asked for help he said DIL was taking the kids to the park to keep them away from the rusty nails and sharp tools. So they were out when we arrived and we got on reasonably well. I was on my way back out side with the rubbish sack for a clear up when the kids arrived back. DGD saw me and said "Granny, Grampie outside? I go give Grampie hugs." Rushed straight past me and threw herself at DH. So thats me put in my place - again!
DGS obviously felt sorry for me "Never mind Granny" says he " I'll hug you first" Isn't he sweet - just like his dad, knows how to wrap the girls round his little finger, and still only 4.
Anyway I'm now totally exhausted and off to bed. See y'all tomorrow.
Carol
Yes, I'm trying to lure darius within driving distance; it's not working :O <
Wow, where is everyone this morning? I spent most of the weekend indoors because of cold windy weather. However, it alleviated late yesterday afternnon and my spousal unit and I brought some of the of the woody gartenmeister fushias out of the basement. We repotted them, cut them back and gave them a drink of Peter's. I just love these plants. The coral-red cylindrical blooms just keep coming on until frost. They can take a lot of shade. I also love green-purple luminescent leaves. They are woody and grown outdoors to a large size in warm climates.
Oh my, everyone has been so busy!! We just can't wait can we? I'll have a teeny slice of that pie, love lemon in anything! I did a little cleanup too, lots of little green things showing, all we needed was a couple days of sunshine! GS came over again, and since DH wasn't home yet to help him with his Ranchero restoration, I enlisted him to help in the flower beds. He's full of questions, wants to redo their yard, so I gave him lots of Good Advice....like amending the soil which in his yard looks like dust and is very compacted. He left with a list and my little tiller, and I'm sure he'll be back with more questions. I have iris and mums I can divide for him, nothing spectacular but they don't have anything in the ground now.
Can't talk DH into moving to a warmer zone when he retires, but it sure would be nice to be able to grow some of the warmer climate plants. Temps should be moderate today, so I guess I'd better get back outside and do some more clean up. And it looks like the furkids had a romp in here so out comes the vac again.
Took my youngest to Walmart yesterday to get her some new "work" clothes to go with her new job. Took her two hellions along and miracle of miracles, they were ANGELIC. Oldest one is on meds for his ADD, and when his antics slowed down, so did his little brother's. My sister asked me this morning how long he would be on the Rx....I said I hoped until I died! He's incredibly bright, reading 3 grades above his level, but drives me nuts with his hyperactivity.
Off to the garden!! Have a great, NOT WINDY OR COLD, day!!
P>S>found Marcia over in the jokes and chat/nightowls thread. She's packing up and pretty busy so I guess that's why we haven't heard from here lately. Still househunting too.
It's Monday...the baby is napping...and I think I'll try to talk DH into carrying out a couple of azaleas to the potting shed so I can get them ready to put outside. This morning I taught Angel how to dig in the dirt with her new shovel and pail set. She LOVES it! (hehehehe naughty grammy, naughty grammy :-D)
I can't believe how many things are coming up that I planted last year. (I didn't remember planting *most* of them.) A lot of my iris have new spikes on them, but several other look like they might have 'bit the dust' over winter. But I know not to count them out until they completely rot into the ground. I've thrown them into the woods only to have them show up a year or two later.
The daylilies are *really* looking good! I hope I gets lots of blooms this year.
Better run before my time runs out...
HI to *everyone* See ya tomorrow!
~julie~
Hi, GOB's (and GOB wannabe's plus the occasional males who visit!)
Warmed up to 70ş today after our nasty snowstorm Saturday, so it's a rather sunny & pleasant day. : ) Too bad I don't feel like working in the yard. Somehow, knowing I'm moving once again, I find no incentive for the garden right now. I will miss my creek and all the greenery and birds, but I may find local friends which I do not have here. I haven't really lived in the "city" part of a city in maybe 30 years.
I've been crunching numbers most of the day... what a dreadful job although necessary. Looks like we have a decent shot at making this potential business and building work!
The bright side is that I've also done some internet exploring for upscale birdyard products. Man, there is some cool stuff out there, including some fantastic looking glass birdbaths and copper bird feeders and birdhouses. Not for the average Buyer but they will look great in a window display!!
Sarv, the bad weather we had in TN on Saturday should have been gone by yesterday (Sunday) so hope your folks are ok and it was just trffic. We spent 55 minutes going 5 miles just outside Knoxville, roadwork plus an accident.
Julie, you have the right idea... break 'em into gardening early!
Can you believe it ? 80 degrees to day!!! wow!! and i survived my first real work day - only hung up on 2 people and one was half the computer's fault - glitch - came in on the wrong line so the only way to get rid of the glitch is turn off the puter and reboot. So sorry lady, you are gone... couldn't even let her know what happened. lol but I feel bad when that happens. Noone likes being hung up on.
I actually saw some daffs in bloom today too. Some of my tulips are 6-7" tall already, others are just coming up. Lots of perennials are peeking out too. I have a mystery something coming up close to one peony bush. Lots of little leaves - NO clue what they are! Did I dump something there? I have to admit not remembering what i planted where. Most I managed to label but I found a few labels (the blind type) were blown out of the ground and no where near a plant. I guess it'll be a fun surprise.
Tiem to make supper. gotta run. later all
Sounds like a good day, Laura! : )
We only got to around 72ş today... and I, too, have a few things coming up... even some nubs on hostas. I didn't bring much here from what I planted at my aunt's place last year, which may be a good thing in the long run since there will be almost NO garden space if we get that commercial bldg. in TN. Probably just a 2' x 30' area next to a fence if I'm lucky, and maybe a few big pots on the small concrete slab outside the rear door (where I also plan to have a grill).
I did transplant some herbs last fall and those will HAVE to move with me.... even if in then living pots for a year or two. I guess the oriental lilies may have to stay... sigh.
Darius, I don't know how gardeners do it, getting a place all planted, watching it grow and then having to leave it for one reason or another. Actually, I *do* know how they do it...they feel really disappointed and dig in again. That's how I felt leaving the house on the river 2 years ago. But there are always the new challenges to look forward to, and the new plants to explore. (Couldn't you dig up a couple of those favorite lilies and pot them up to with you?)
Good morning everyone!
Kooger...I'm so happy for you. You sound like you really like your new job, and except for the 'hang up' calls, it sounds like it likes you too! :-) Trust me, hanging up on people comes with the territory of using a phone...no matter what job you have. hehehe I certainly did my share...some of it was *my* fault, some of it happened when someone else would pick up the open line and hang it up when then found out they'd picked up the wrong one. I even did it the owner of the company once or twice in 20 years. :-D
Now I'm going to *whine*...
Poor me.......I need MORE time! Babysitting is cutting into my repotting plans. Things are growing and need to be potted, other things need to be started indoors (cannas, caladium, elephant ears, etc) and I just can't get to it. I need to move everything into those greenhouses, get potting soil bought and hauled in...beds to dig...weeds to pull...Waaaaaaaaaaa. (I'm beginning to think if I'd known my time was going to be shortened to 4 days a week for *me* I never would have started my garden at all.)
OK...I'm done now. :-D
I guess I *could* get more time to *do* things if I'd just stop *thinking* (and TALKING) about them. hehehehe
It was 80° here yesterday, too. What a surprise that was! The weather is making me feel like I'm behind on getting all my work done and here it is, at least month earlier than I'd planned to be planting outside, anyway. One good thing about it though, Angel likes being outside so I can get a little of my list of things done.
Guess I'd better get my bed made and my clothes on before the baby gets here.
TTYL,
~julie~
Good morning GOBs, wannabees, and lurkers! Another beautiful day in the neighborhood, but rain is predicted. That's okay, we need it. No work today, or any Tues. unless I switch with someone. My reg. schedule is Mon, Wed, Thurs, Fri. 8:45 to 5:15 and Sat 10 to 6:30. Have to work one weekend day for minimum of 3 months, then you can apply to change it. I may keep it, I can take MIL to dr. appts and such on Tues. (She's got one today) Gives me very little 'me' time, but such is life - it's never just what we plan on. Right, Julie? lol
I never got any winter sowing or inside sowing done. I planned too but kept holding off, thinking if I found a job, I wouldn't have time for the transplanting and watering, etc. Now I'm glad I didn't get any done - i'd feel bad about not being able to take care of them. Guess I'll buy a few more. But I did sign up for switching May 1 at work. Gotta make it to IA RU!!!!!!! I first filed to trade it with my Tues. for that week. It that isn't approved, I'll have to try trade it with someone else's Tues. Last resort will be giving it away. I'll BE there!! lol
Gotta make a few calls for DH. later... L
Kooger...you got that right! *Never* what we'd planned. :-D
While I was typing my last message, an "elf" was outside moving my WS containers into the greenhouse units. I told DH that it must have been a *tall* elf, otherwise that elf never would have been able to reach the benches. hehehe (He can be such a sweetie! And right now is one of those times.)
I think I'd better get some caladiums potted up this morning. Angel won't be here for another hour or so, so I've got a little extra time. (Yes! I got my clothes on! LOL)
~julie~
Hello again everyone. Wow, I missed a lot in the past few days, you guys are so busy. Kooger, congratulations on getting that immigration thing done, and your test, and your job, everything looks pretty good from here. Darius, I hope this business/living arrangement works out for you, it looks like you are considering things carefully. Carol is back from her travels, Julie is having fun with kids and plants, somebody else is getting an arbor built, lots of stuff is happening. And it looks like I missed the lemon merangue pie.
Indeed the Catholic church and the whole world has lost a very good leader. I'm not a Catholic but certainly have admired this Pope and his accomplishments over the past quarter century. My husband said this Pope is the greatest man in his lifetime.
This past weekend I was gone to the first endurance ride of the 2005 season for the NW region. It was a LONG day in the saddle, 5am to 11pm with a couple hours of rests, and I am still stiff and sore but getting better. The horse looks great and looked much better all day than I did. The day of the ride I had a backache that didn't quit all day even with lots of ibuprophen, so along with riding 75 miles the pain wore me out. We took the maximum time allowed which I hadn't planned to do but got off trail in the dark and lost about 1 1/2 hours getting back on to it so I could finish before time ran out. The weather was good, not windy and not wet. This endurance riding sport is definitely an adventure, and this is one of those rides I will definitely remember. Yesterday I spent a lot of time on the vibrating heat mat, it's definitely a good invention. Today I need to go to town for some shopping (my weekly trip) and will meet my hubby there for a Chinese lunch. The greenhouse needs some tending, hope to be able to do that today too. All this interspersed with sessions on the mat. I'm not even sure what I did to my back since I don't remember hurting it.
The lambing isn't quite over, just my night check duty. Yesterday I was on daytime lamb watch because the owner had to go to Idaho for the day. He had been watching one ewe for a couple of days, she is playing the April Fool game with us, might be having false labor or it might be the real thing. She isolates herself from the flock, acts like she is thinking about delivering a lamb but never gets into obvious labor, then the next time we look she is back in the flock looking relaxed and happy. There are only about a dozen left to lamb. The flock with all the lambs is in the field next to us, so now I can see those happy little frisky lambs running around from my window.
Yesterday's weather was windy with snow squalls every couple of hours, a good day to be spending indoors with the laundry and the heat pad with a few trips to check the ewe. My back still feels tight but I'm being careful and will get some of those Icey Hot patches (right name?) to put on the achey spot. Meanwhile, a nice hot shower will feel great.
See you guys later.
My folks made it back to Mich from Fla OK- no major mishaps. Phew- glad they did it safely!! They stopped at our house on the way home for dinner - DGS was here - he surprised them. DS and DIL came over too, so it was a nice evening. I made peanut butter cup ice cream pie - man oh man, was it delish. I had a piece for breakfast and 3 (yes you read that right!) for lunch. Now it is all gone and I have a major stomach ache (which I deserved I think)
Gas prices have gone up to $2.44 overnight. I am ticked. The news said they went up 'because they could' - I remember gas wars when they went down to .24 cents a gallon!
The weather in Mich has been gorgeous- in the 70's today and high 60's yesterday, but alas, it is too early for those warm temps, so I imagine we will get the cold and dreary back soon. I do have some tiny tulips blooming- planted them last fall so they were a nice surprise.
I am going to go rake this afternoon - uncovering stuff. If that darn gas wasn't so high, I would go into town to the garden centers. Now I plan a day in town to do all my errands.
Hope all is well with everyone!!
Mary...you're some kind of woman to take that long of a ride and in the pain you're in. Like I said...SOME kind of woman. (You're my hero! :-)) Congratulations on completing that ride!
Sarv LOL I think that just *maybe* that tummy ache was the price one pays for eating what one loves. (Man...I'd like to do that with the Coconut Cream pie that's in the fridge...but I think DH might have something to say about it if I did...that's HIS pie! :-D)
I sure hope our weather isn't going to go back to winter now. It looks like the clouds are starting to roll in for those showers we're supposed to get later on this afternoon.
I went out and checked on the WS containers DH so sweetly moved into the GH units this morning. I have over *50* of the 105 moved to the 'sprouted' side of the first unit. YIPPEE!!! And they're looking really good! We also moved the geraniums and a few other plants out of the basement and into the units. I figure I'd better go buy a BIG box of bubble wrap just in case my babies need a blanket during the night. :-D
Think I'd better go get my watering bucket filled up and dampen those containers that need it.
Later...
~julie~
glad your folks make it ok, sarv. ... and three pieces of pie?? did you honestly think you could get away with that w/o a tummy ache?? (shaking my head, LOL) But you sure are honest!! :)
I've got 2 hrs. before I have to take DS to get his driver's license. The last one! IA now has a restricted license for 16 yr olds so he won't have a full one until 18. Better do some vacuuming before I have to go.
P.S. If you see a lot of missing caps and apostrophes in my typing, it's because they are not used at work. Everything is typed in caps and the only punctuation used is !!!!. Spaces are used for apostrophes, Q is used for question mark, and lots of spaces are used between sentences so you learn very quickly to get spacebar happy. :)
Hope you don't mind a feller-guy-male type entry!!! Kooger, I'm not as often 'spacebar happy' as just spaced out,so to speak. But anyway,my wish is to share some desert with 'yall (that's south-speak for 'this delightfully diverse and happy assemblage').This afternoon whilst my mate and true love is a work I foraged into the refrigerators deepest, darkest recesses, where neither eyes nor fingers have ventured for oh so long. What should appear but 1 1/2 lbs of cream cheese, fresh creamery butter,a cup of sour cream,4 large eggs, and from the bakecenter 6oz of Germans chocolate and graham crackers. Then there peeked out of the liquor cabinet a fresh bottle of that wonderful Vandermint chocolate mint liqueur from Holland. The Quisinart and Kitchenaid had been idle for so long I wasn't sure they would remember how to operate, but they did good! All good things went together and the oven perked right up at 350°,that nice German springform pan with the lip around the bottom was just barely large enough to hold everything, and in about 7 minutes,as the crow flies, the oven will turn off and open its door a crack and all the good little cheesecakes will slowly cool to room temp and be ready to sample late tonight.Hope I can count on some help,it's a little more than I can handle by myself, and my sweetheart is the one with the ability to just try a little. As for me,I can resist everything but temptation.
Wowie Bal,
A man who bakes. Many men can cook and grill, but baking, I am impressed and that looks oh so good.
You are welcome here anytime, day or night!!!!
Molly
:^)))
Gee thanks Molly! This is an interesting thread, though it seems to be fraught with gender specific conversations that are difficult for a feller such as I to follow clearly.(not a complaint by any means, but merely an observation).Cooking has been a lot of fun since my mother started showing me what side of the pan the water goes in at about age 7.Baking is the most fun.My love and I get along well. She watches the sports and I watch the cooking shows!
Mary,do you remember that song from light years ago.Maresy doats and doesy doats and little lamsydivy, a kiddley divey too, wouldn't ewe? It keeps coming up when I read about all the lambing, but I can't recall th rest. '30's and '40's had a lot of silly songs, silly but still better than the current mind numbing incoherant screaming the kids call music.Better set the table.Dear One is bringing Thai take-out home for dinner tonight.
Hi Balvenie, That looks good. is it cool enough to eat yet? You andyour other half sound like me and mine. He does the cooking - meals that is, I do the painting decorating fixing computers, electrics etc. We share the garden and both grudgingly do the housework. He isn't up to baking anything other than bread though. DS on the otherhand was properly brought up - he makes a mean lemon sponge cake, and his raspberry pie is to die for. Sadly he has been snapped up by a very sensiblr lass and I'm back to baking my own!
The full Lyrics are below :>)
I know a ditty nutty as a fruitcake
Goofy as a goon and silly as a loon
Some call it pretty, others call it crazy
But they all sing this tune:
Mairzy doats and dozy doats and liddle lamzy divey
A kiddley divey too, wouldn't you?
Yes! Mairzy doats and dozy doats and liddle lamzy divey
A kiddley divey too, wouldn't you?
If the words sound queer and funny to your ear, a little bit jumbled and jivey
Sing "Mares eat oats and does eat oats and little lambs eat ivy"
Oh! Mairzy doats and dozy doats and liddle lamzy divey
A kiddley divey too, wouldn't you-oo?
A kiddley divey too, wouldn't you?
(REPEAT)
Carol
A kid'l eat ivy too, wouldn't you? I know some people who named their mare Marezy Doats or something that sounds just like that. Were the words to that song really written like that or was it our ears that heard it that way?
Welcome Balvenie, can we call you something easier? Joe or Sam or even Sue? Like the guy Johnny Cash sang about. Whatever you are comfortable with. We used to live at Sultan and between Monroe and Snohomish, above the flood plane and on the side of the valley where the reformatory is, close enough to hear the loud speakers "inside" the walls. Things got a little bit too close to home when an escapee spent the night in the barn across the road from us. My DH sister lived at Smokey Point when there was nothing there on the old highway but a gas station/store, and also she lived in Marysville for a while. That was in the early '60's. Dark ages maybe, don't know how old you are. I'm almost ancient but the gals here don't believe it.
My day in town included a trip through the Salvation Army thrift store where I got a pair of jeans and 2 shirts, all like new and 2 planters. Total about $8. Not bad. I also bought 5 large sized 6 packs of pansys in shades of burgundy and colors that go well with it for the front entry barrels. I have a heuchura with burgundy leaves in the back of each one, and the pansys go well with it. They get morning sun. I need something with more white or silver but the store where I got the plants didn't have what I wanted and I was running out of time to go look at other places. Not many places in a town with only 9000 people and the other place was on the far side of town.
Today my back is pretty comfortable, I've been careful not to stress it today and that is paying off. I figured it would be a few days before it is back to normal.
Kooger, give us a sample of what you type at work. I think it would be fun to read another language that I actually could read.
Time for dinner, fried chicken tonight. See ya later.
Robert: just you and Oscar! ...
As for me,I can resist everything but temptation.
Cheesecake looks scrumptious... (but not my forté...)
Good job Carol. Then there's the Hutsut song, cement mixer puttsy putsy, and a bunch I've 'mislaid'.Wouldn't go so far as to say there were a bunch of old folks on DG,only 'mature adults'.Your DS strikes a familiar cord too. Our son has taken up cooking also, which is a surprize.Growing up he wouldn't touch eggs or mayonaise, and cooking was not even a consideration. But enter a wife, two small daughters, mortgage and all the other grown up things and now baking and barbequing and cooking aren't so bad.Eggs and mayo are still out though.Just checked the cheesecake, but it's still too warm.Might be a right nice addition to breakfast.Don't think I can match Sarv's 3 pieces for breakfast. That was heroic! Migraine is finally gone at last.Time for a hot cup of tea,and a taste of peanut butter cup icecream pie would be nice too.
That's the way the song was written, A kid will eat ivy too, refers to a baby goat therefore, Mares eat oats and Does eat oats and little lambs eat Ivy. A kidd will eat ivy too! Would'nt you? Daddy taught me "Just say", instead of "sing". I sing it often when I'm out in the yard happy.
That sure is a good looking cheesecake. Wish I had a big piece, I'd eat some now, and some later.
Went on a trash cruse this afternoon. I found a pair of ramps for driving my car upon, and a lot of lumber.
There is a horseshoe street, it makes a U and puts you back to the street I start on. It's named "Lucky Ave." and they put out the best stuff on trash day. One time I got 8 perfect louvered wooden window shutters there with all the mounting hardware on Lucky.
I have and read about back problems here on DG often and wonder if anyone else believes in those great elastic and velcro back supports.
They are great and have been a job and lifesaver to me.
Getting the yawns, Sidney
Yep, Sugarweed, they do help and I have one somewhere but have looked for it and can't find it. I remember loaning it to my sister but she returned it and where did I put it? That's the last time I saw it. Cheesecake for breakfast sounds good. I'll be here.
Walmart about $25. in sporting goods
HI.~~~~waving to everyone and welcome to the newcomers. I think that 4/1 was the last day that I spent much time at the computer. The items got packed and off to the sale and I am hoping to have enough energy to bake some cookies and a chocolate mousse cake. I sure want that organization to make it.
You all have been so busy with travels, gardening, new jobs and house-hunting. I hope that the storm damage is limited in work to clean up. We have had really nice weather since the hail storm, so everything seems to be breaking dormancy at once. I have to get the mulch off before things rot. I did find that I lost at least one new daylily-drat--need to look up things before I buy them..like evergreen daylily--not so hardy here!
The + thing is that some of the daylily seeds that I crossed last season and jsust planted a few weeks ago are sprouting!! It was so nice to see, especially since I did so many things wrong..note to self: Always read page 2 of instructions and re-read page 1.
Julie-moss sounds great. I can get you starts from a couple of clumps-giving you at least 2 colors.
Cheesecake and pie sound great...bluejeans are tighter than a few months ago..have to pass. SSSIIIGGGHHH!
Night to all.
Robert, my mouth was watering, reading all the yummy ingredients! And a welcome to you to the coffee kletsch(sp). Always good to see a familiar face!! (and especially one who shares goodies!)
Mary - I can never repeat a conversation as I am only the 'telephone line'. Breaking confidentiality is immediate termination. But I'll try to pick a few phrases out of one of our work books - they're confidential too, so it can't be verbatim.
MY SHOES OLD TOMORROW GO SHOP YOU QQ GIRLFRIEND MY SHORT! HE BUY BOOK FINISH FIND HOUSE YOU QQ MY SON OUT GO PARK ME GO MOVIE YESTERDAY YOU GO SOCCER PRACTICE TMW
Sometimes I can't figure out the words or phrase so then I say it verbatim and so far they've almost always known what the caller is saying. cld threw me once - I took it to mean closed but read later in the book that it is could and clg I see quite often - calling. Those phrases are fairly easy, it's when I get a whole long paragraph in what's called 'strong ASL' that it gets really difficult. Whenever possible, we translate into conversational English. Most deaf students today learn more of the grammar of Eng. than their parents did so they are much easier to understand on TTY.
HI HERE SAM ME TRY TRY TRY TRY FIND UR APT CAN T U LIVE WHERE Q GA The repetition of the word try would be said in a frustrated, louder voice : I tried and tried and tried but couldn't find your apt. What's the address again? or Where is it? either one would be ok.
The relaying is the easy part. The hard part is hooking up the lines correctly. An example: (not really the right ones, also confidential)
Call comes in on the TTY line
I enter the nbr they are calling
I press a key to dial it
When it starts ringing, I press a code (2 keys) to tell the TTY user that it is ringing
When the phone is answered, I press another key to tell the TTY user that someone has picked it up
Immediately I press another key to start timing the call
I announce a TTY user is on the line
If they have never had a TTY call before, I read the explaination
At the same time I press 2 more keys to let the TTY user know that I am reading the explaination
I press 2 more keys to tell the TTY user the sex (my best guess-smile) of the call-ee
I type what the call-ee said when they answered the phone and GA (go ahead)
Then I read wait for the TTY user to type their msg
Read the msg to the call-ee
etc. etc. go back and forth reading and typing between the 2
when they are finished talking, they say/type GA SK (go ahead and ready to hang up)
SKSK (hanging up) (FYI: SK comes from the days of the telegragh, means Stop Keying)
If the call-ee hangs up first, I press 2 keys to let the TTY user know they are off the line and press another key to hang up that line
The caller often says 'Thank you Relay or Operator'
If they do, I press 2 more keys to say they are welcome and goodbye and their line hangs up when they hang up
If the caller hangs up first, I tell the call-ee that the caller has hung up, they say thankyou, I say your welcome and they hang up.
I press a key and their line is closed
I breathe deeply and am ready for the next call. :)
That is the easiest call type. It gets really complicated when you have to leave a msg for someone on an answering machine or type the whole answering machine msg. You begin to despise those folks that have the cutesy answering machine msgs when you have to type the whole thing!! (JK!) :) The worst are businesses who have press 1 for accounting press 2 for receiving press 3 for etc etc etc I have a record key so I can stop and start the msg but often they skip parts of it so you put in (skipped) or (missed msg) and then the caller wants #1 so you have to redial and bring up another box to dial 1 in and so forth. I successfully did one of those on Mon. I was SOOOO thrilled. I did 2 leaving an ans mach msg correctly too. I probably missed a few keys but got the msg left, which is the important part.
Hope I haven't put you all to sleep......zzzzzzzz....... blame Mary, she asked ..........lol
