Coffee and...part 11 :-D

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

kooger- good night- that looks hard!!! I had a hard time figuring out what in the world they were saying...

Bal - I'll pass on the cheesecake for today, I am still feeling crummy from eating half of the peanut butter pie - why in the world did I do that I will never know. I kept going by the mirror and looking at my fat gut hanging out (and no wonder!)

Talk about males cooking- my DH is a fairly good cook, however he loves to try new things without a receipe and loves weird combos. I want to know what I am eating!! Both sons are excellent cooks - I believe it comes from living on their own for several years.

Woke up to find the cat stretched out on the stove!!! Gave her a swat and got out the bleach spray. grrr she hasn't done that in a long time - probably does it more than I know, I just caught her this time!!

Our sunny weather is history. I still want to get out and rake one more bed before the rains come in. I just read (somewhere??) that you shouldn't dump maple leaves in the garden as they have something in them that hinders root growth. Anyone ever heard of that?? I've been chopping them up fine and putting them in the garden instead of the compost pile. Article said they need to sit for a year to have that compound leach out... hmmm

Thinking about signing up for a stain glass window class. I have a window that I want to make a panel for= however it is quite pricey. But I've wanted to do it for awhile before I croak, so maybe now is the time.

Well, I want to read a couple of chapters, sit on the heating pad for awhile (instead of turning on the furnace!!), then outside for a bit. Have a great day folks!!

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

What a busy crew! Yummmm cheesecake, Balvenie you can visit us any time. No, never mind, I'll just get the guest room tidied up and you can come over here and visit for a while! My DH's idea of cooking is putting leftovers in the microwave and heating them up until the container melts. Or opening a bag of Doritos. You get the picture. He's a good eater, though!! Never complains if I make swill for dinner...which is my word for anything that I'm not fond of, like, tuna casserole (ugh).

Spent quite a bit of time doing cleanup. Arms and hands full of punctures and scratches from pruning the roses, and two fingernails gone to compost. I knew it couldn't last! Found some little crocuses coming up in back. Last fall, a cute little girl from the subdivision brought her school's fundraising catalog and she was so obviously unskilled at door to door sales, I had to buy something. In her little whispery voice, she took me through the catalog page by page, and I spotted a bulb assortment. Ordered them. Came in the smallest box I ever saw. Took them outside and dug them in here and there and promptly forgot about them! POP!! There they are!! I know there were two or three other varieties but I'll be switched if I can remember where I dug them in.

Good buy on the jeans, Mary. Some lucky duck will hit the Goodwill one of these days and pick up the five pair I just tried on yesterday and decided they were hopeless (bad fairies shrunk them in the wash). I must be a different size in the store when I try them on, and then blow up when I get back home. Speaking of which, pass the cheesecake....LOL

Kooger, after reading your transcript on the "conversations' I admire more than ever your ability to score a 90 on your exam! I admit to getting a little glassy eyed about halfway through...geeeeez!
Glad all arrived safely. I used to worry about my Dad driving, he was fearless and had continued driving even after he develped cataracts. We used to tell him his half of the road wasn't down the middle. My stepmother never learned to drive, so she just sat silently gritting her teeth and just white-knuckled her way to whereever he was taking them. He had a couple of fender benders near the end but you'd have had to hogtie him to get him to give up his license. Well.... me too.

Darius, I don't know how you will survive without a garden!! Lots of pots, I guess!! When we were building our house, I was digging up plants daily to transport them. Put them in the ground far away from the building site, but wouldn't you know it, guys either drove over them or dumped piles of dirt or building materials on top,and hardly anything survived. Some day I'll tell you about my pre-dawn Ninja raid at the house we sold. Since that little adventure, my family has informed me that if I am ever arrested, I can forget I ever knew them.

Mairzy Doats!! Now that's gonna run through my head all day, Thanks a whole bunch!! Yeah, those are the real words.....can't remember phone numbers or appointments, but old songs from my early days, oh Yeah, those are permanently etched in my brain!

Later. And I'll take a teeny slice of the peanut butter cup pie for the road.....Lots to do today, and rain predicted so I better get out there early. Gas prices ....YEOW!!!! Wonder what it will take to get us to realize there is a limited supply of natural fuels and find alternatives???

Now yall have really done it!!!!

I am a lifelong hummer. When I'm happy or sad, I hum, (but not when I am upset) all day long to the point of people insisting I put on a radio (heehee) Mindless humming of any little ditty I might have heard 2 notes from. Ocsar Meyers weiners even.

Now we will be eating oats for the next 2 days, or listening to me hum it. Eventually it will turn into something totally unrecognizable by anyone, even me.

I'm off to look at a new project, see yall later!

Ho Ho HOLY CATS!!! Just LOOK at the footprints in the kitchen this morning! It looks like everyone decided to visit at once (while I was gone...but only for a little while!)

Hey ROBERT!!! Wow! You bopped in here in fine fashion! Yummy cheesecake...*and* a great sense of humor at the same time! They just don't make 'em like you nowadays. :-D Welcome and PLEASE come back often.

Kooger...If you think your message was boring...you're entirely *wrong*! I read and re-read every word of the description of your job and sat here completely *amazed*! I had no idea of what TTY even was aside for being a communication system for the hearing impaired. I honestly didn't know that there were *live* people in the middle of the conversations. Obviously, I've never had the opportunity to benefit from TTY. Yesterday, Mary was my hero for riding through her pain. Today, *you* are my hero for subjecting yourself to learning something way too complicated for *my* head. (I tip my hat! And add "You GO, girl!" :-))

Mary...I'm glad you are feeling better today. I would have hated to dump you from my hero platform with your back still giving you trouble. LOL (You're still my hero...

Awwww shucks! ALL the GOBs (which now could stand for Glorious Old BOYS, as well as...well you know...) are my heros! Every single one of you give me inspiration in one way or other and it's really nice to know you're all here!

Marcia...good to see you checking in. I hope it won't be long you can spend a little more time with us. Yeah! I was hoping you'd like the moss idea! I've spent some time researching 'moss gardens' and have found out some really interesting things about growing it. I'd love some starts of the different colors of sedum. I'm only sorry I didn't recognize their value in the garden a long time ago. And I really wish I'd known last fall how to get them started. I found armloads of huge cuttings someone had dumped in a forest preserve. I stuck the pieces in the fround...but should have brought some of them inside and maybe stuck some in a pot in a protected spot. I would probably have had more than I could use now. (OH! The Thalictrum is going great guns for me...thank you again!)

Well...I'd intended to say a personal "Hello" to everyone...but it looks like I won't get that done now.

So HI! to everyone I didn't get...and think of me today (it's Wed. and the last day of my babysitting week) Angel has a 'tummy upset' and that means LOTS of ....uh...we'll just call it a 'smelly job' and let it go at that. LOL

Later!

There is a nice discussion of this serious topic here http://www.people.virginia.edu/~jbk9y/wdcksoc.html for anyone who is interested!

Morning all - Is the coffee still hot? I need to get going on some hard work today. I bought the Tomato, Pepper and Aubergine plants yesterday so they need to be planted, then I have to sort the house. We have visitors coming and the place is about to be full of workmen doing repairs on the settlement cracks, in every room. The place is a tip!! They really pick their moments - it was supposed to be all done yesterday, but at 7pm it was only about half way so I threw them out so I could clean up the kitchen and do something about feeding DH before he passed out. There isn't one room thats not part done, so there was nowhere safe to sit and eat, and we couldn't go out and leave them with the house all open. If we had, when they left Mr Robbing (as the kids called him) would have thought all his Xmases had come at once!!
Hey ho, I feel tired at the thought of all that housework!! Pass the lemon meringue girls and boys!
Carol

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

Good grief Carol,a 50% setback in time? Seems hard to find workmen who have a sense of responsibility and are able to complete a job as quoted.Remodeling/repairs often do turn up unforseen problems though.Seldom can tell what's behind the plaster or hidden elsewhere. Is there a foundation problem causing the settlement?
Kooger,I've often wondered what that TTY was.Sounds like a very intensive job.Congratulations on your progress.
Sarv,by all means take the window class. It is a bit costly to start, but later you aren't paying $100.00 to $200.00/sq. ft.for a stained glass window, and as with so many crafts it is very satisfying.
Marcia, did you get to make that chocolate mousse cake? It sounds great. There was one I made years ago that would be a hit.Springform pan lined with thin spongecake, filled with chocolate mousse, removed from pan and covered with chocolate ganache.Time consuming, but very elegant, and would sell well by the slice.(thin of course)
The cheesecake is chilled now and should slice easily, coffee is hot, come on over,(herbal tea is available too)

Well, all you B's (broads and boys) sure have been busy! Makes me look pitiful as all I've done on 5 of the last 6 days is drive, drive, drive.... : )

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Hi all,

Work is slow this week so have been spending more time lurking around. Yesterday I finally put in most all of the plants I received at Florala, worked almost til dark. My van was sparsely loaded coming back, so didn't have a whole lot of work to do.

I can see that wooden fence on the south side of my yard is NOT going to be a shade garden come summer. So my roses in their pots will line the fence. I pulled roots and weeds in most of the beds.

I have been avoiding weeding the real shade garden back in the corner. Later today, I am resigned to taking care of that....I think I can, I think I can....... My only argument to that is, after I pull out the weeds, there is going to be a lot of bare ground back there. hmmmmmmm what's a girl to do? Buy more plants or do some trades!!!!

Actually, I better get going on working proposals. Proposals today means work tomorrow.........

:^))))

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

Hello again. Darius, will you be home for a while now? Did you decide to make an offer on the 2 story building or are you still looking?

Kooger, it was very interesting to read the examples of your work. I had never thought of there being a person in the middle of a hearing/non hearing or two non hearing people having a conversation. It looks pretty complicated but I suppose it will come naturally after a while. Nope, it sure didn't put me to sleep. Are there always several people on duty? How many calls do you assist in an average shift?

I took a stained glass class about 20 years ago, still have stuff to do it with and might get back to it some day. The class was about 6 weeks once or twice a week, so long ago I don't remember. Since I am not artistic it gave me a chance to make something pretty. When I took the class we were living in southeast Alaska, a very rainy place, and I didn't have any place for a garden, and needed something creative to do. I also made knotted pot hangers, just using the simple knots. Have some of that stuff left too. My house looked like a jungle since I couldn't grow anything outside.

My neighbor wants me to help him bring the yearling cattle to the corrals to sort them today and then tomorrow morning the vet will come and give the heifers bangs vaccinations so I will be helping again. Good light duty for my aching back which is lots better since I have been very careful what I've done for the past few days. Both today and tomorrow involve being on horseback but it is short duration and will serve as a trial run before this weekend when I intend to do some serious riding if I am able to handle that many hours in the saddle. The back brace would help that I'm sure. Still looking for it, finding other lost things in the process. About the time I go buy one I know I'll find my old one. Weeding and digging will have to wait, as well as getting things planted in my vegie garden. I could do pruning though before things get more awake, so maybe tomorrow after I get finished at the neighbors.

Both my sons cook quite well. When they were teenagers they both had jobs in an upscale restaurant where they got one meal a day and learned a lot about cooking. Such a deal, it lined their stomachs and gave them spending money all at the same time. Our grocery bill went down significantly which made me happy, too. And of course if somebody's steak got too well done somebody had to eat it. One of them spent several years working there and at another restaurant, but decided he didn't want to do that all his life and learned carpentry instead. Now they both work as carpenters, the oldest one owns his own business and the younger one has a job with a commercial builder after several years of driving a truck. Their first building experiences were helping their dad build a storage shed and a 24x24 shop and garage. They must have liked it.

Oh, and I do remember the Hut Sut Song, and also one about a witch doctor that had "ting tang wally wally bing bang" in it. Great nonsense that just sticks with a person through the years and pops into my head to entertain me again from time to time at odd moments.

Time to get that bread pudding put together and more laundry done. See you later.

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

Gosh, I just called my friend and told her I was NOT going to take the stained glass class with her. I called the place offering it and they told me I could not make a window panel (19 x 34) as it was too big. SO I decided I wouldn't take the class at all as I didn't want more stuff sitting around. Now several of you said to take it!!! hmmm, maybe I will reconsider.

Worked outside all day and man did I get a lot done!! Feels really good. Most best got their first raking - always do a second on later. Things look dry - rain coming tonight!! Hey, do tulips spread?? I have some in groups and the group keeps getting bigger - not that I am complaining!!

I made a list of things for DH to do (just to remind him) and when he came home from work he threw it away. Grrr, I am so ticked at him!!! I asked him two days ago to take the trash out (he cancelled the trash man saying he would burn it instead) It is still sitting here - almost overflowing... We are going to have words about the situation I think!!!! Good thing both of us get over snits quick!!

Clouds are rolling in and I need to go close up the greenhouse to conserve the heat inside...

Lyrics to Purple People Eater.

Well I saw the thing comin' out of the sky
It had the one long horn, one big eye.
I commenced to shakin' and I said "ooh-eee"
It looks like a purple people eater to me.

It was a one-eyed, one-horned, flyin' purple people eater.
(one-eyed, one-horned, flyin' purple people eater)
A one-eyed one-horned, flyin' puple people eater
Sure looks stange to me. (one eye?)

Well he came down to earth and lit in a tree
I said Mr. Purple People Eater don't eat me
I heard him say in a voice so gruff
I wouldn't eat you cuz you're so tough

It was a one-eyed, one-horned flyin' purple people eater
one-eyed, one-horned flyin' purple people eater
one-eyed, one-horned flyin' purple people eater
Sure looks strange to me. (one horn?)

I said Mr. Purple People Eater, what's your line
He said it's eatin' purple people and it sure is fine
But that's not the reason that I came to land
I wanna get a job in a rock and roll band

Well bless my soul, rock and roll, flying purple
people eater. Pidgeon-toed, undergrowed, flyin'
purple people eater (we wear short shorts)
Flyin' purple people eater
sure looks strange to me.

And then he swung from the tree and lit on the
ground. He started to rock, really rockin' around
It was a crazy little ditty with a swingin' tune
(sing aboop boop aboopa lopa lum bam boom)

Well, bless my soul, rock and roll
flyin' purple people eater.
Pigeon-toed, undergrowed, flyin' purple peopleeater.
Flyin' little people eater
Sure looks strange to me. (purple people?)

And then he went on his way, and then what do
you know. I saw him last night on a TV show.
He was blowing it out, a'really knockin' em dead
Playin' rock and roll music through the horn in
his head (clarinet solo) ( Tequila)

looks like i'm the coffee maker this morn. DH got up at 4 and I made him some lunch so doubt I'll get back to sleep - really don't need to get up til 7.

darius - don't really recall the 'witch doctor' ditty but have heard the Maizy whatever and the purple peeps one. And the lion sleeps tonight - love that one! That one is a real brain sticker - can hum it for hrs. Hey, don't feel bad about the driving - part of the process, gotta find a place. What's your latest thoughts on the brick bldg?

Mary - CSD has 12 relay centers. Our center is the headquarters and is where the CEO started a volunteer relay center back in the 70s. Started with a few phones and a closet at the State School for the Deaf. This is what it has developed into today. The contract with Sprint mandates the number of people on 'the line' every hour of the day. I believe it's around 75 at our center, from 9 am to 7 pm. It's less before and after that. The computer checks head count every 15 minutes and if the number falls too many more or less than that, CSD is fined a certain amount every minute they are short or long times the number of peeps short or long. Not sure but i think we can be about 10 short or long before being fined.

Calls per hr? You've got me thinking now - I'm going to try count a day's calls. We also do a lot of internet calls, what some call 'scam' calls from foreign countries (I'm sure you've heard about them in the news). I've had them last up to 1.5 hrs. No way to stop them legally right now so we process them just like the legit calls. Kind of a bummer because they take the time away from those who need to use TTY.

We wore those back braces all the time as a CNA at the nursing home. I think they really do save the back. Glad to hear your's is slowly healing, Mary. Not much worse than back pain, IMHO.

Bread pudding? Can I sneak a piece home to hubby? He loves the stuff and since soggy bread is one thing I despise, I have never made it for him. Hated it as a child already! :)

Well, I'm going to try get a nap in before 7 am. Have a good day all!

Ahhhhhh cheesecake...bread pudding...AND songs of the 50's and 60's what a GREAT groupwe have here! There's something in my head that won't let me hear the lyrics of Witch Doctor without immediately following it up with the Purple People Eater...LOL and then remembering the full circle skirt with all the ruffles on it that I wore to a church camp dance with those songs playing over the loud speaker. "Them was the days..." :-D (Nope, not the poodle skirts...tho I had those too. the skirt I was wearing was called a 'squaw skirt' but not the kind with only three ruffles. (Mama always cheated when it came to 'fashion'...figured if she *called* something by a fashion name, I'd believe it really *was*. hehehe)

Yay!! It's THURSDAY!!! Angel went to be with her mother for the next four days and I have a mountain of stuff to get done before she comes back to grandma.

Marcia...we didn't get one single drop of that rain that hit Madison yesterday. NOT a drop! So I'll be outside watering in the cold temps this morning. The ground is cracking deeply...and I've never seen that happen here.

DH did his weekly shopping yesterday and brought home my "Mother's Day' present. It's a weeping Crabapple! I love crabapple trees...it seems we've always planted at least one on every property we've lived on. This yard is going to be amazing...in *20* years! LOL

That's it for now...got to get my seedlings watered, find my caladium bulbs, canna tubers, and the rest of the seeds that need to be planted a few weeks early. Then it's outside to drag the hoses into place and get those parched plants a drink.

See y'all later!

I remember a restaurant where I worked had sherried fruit as one of their desserts. I don't remember the recipe much but it had lots of butter and sherry involved. Anyone know about this?

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

You can easily find sherried fruit recipes on a Google search. Here's one example: http://www.famie.com/recipes/fruits.htm

I make a favorite winter dessert, poached dried fruit in wine (or sherry), sometimes with a splash of brandy. I can intensify the flavor and firm up the texture by lightly roasting the fruit in a little butter before serving. And I love pears poached in port... plus they are pretty!

Good morning. Woodspirit, that sounds interesting and I think it is a safe bet that Darius would know the answer to that one! I don't know how she knows all the stuff she knows but she seems to be a walking encyclopedia.

Here's a question for Balvenie. If I didn't start with that he might just skip over this part. I remember those circle skirts with all the krinoline "can-can" ruffly slips under them. And then a few years later the skirts were long and very slim, from one extreme to the other. I think the guys probably liked the slim look better, it took less imagination to determine how much girl there was in it. Any comment here from our resident male? Fashions are probably not his thing but he makes a mean cheesecake! And after all, if he is of our vintage he remembers looking at the girls wearing these things. I've wondered how they looked to the guys and if I had asked when I was wearing them I don't think I would have gotten an honest answer. Now maybe after all these years we will learn what the guys really thought.

My back continurs to improve, yesterday's session on the horse went well and I felt no different afterward than before I went. I was thinking maybe one stirrup was a bit shorter than the other causing me to sit crooked, so I adjusted that and I think that helped. This saddle is one I bought last summer but I had some work done on it this winter and it may have not been adjusted right for the past couple of months. What seems to work for a couple of hours often will not work all day.

We had quite a time getting the yearlings to go where we wanted them yesterday. The problem is that after we wean the calves they have no mommas to follow anymore, no practice being a leader, and lots of energy and curiosity. Like herding cats. We have this fun every year. Today the vet is comming to vaccinate the heifers (by law this has to be done by a veterinarian), and then we get to put them back with the rest of the yearlings. More fun moving them again. The big problem is that they have to go past the haystacks and through a grassy area that they want to stay in because it is new and the spring grass is tasty.

I'll bring some of the bread pudding but I have to say there isn't much left already. I ate some before it was cool, and more before I went to bed. Good thing I don't do that sort of thing every day. See you later.

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

That's a tough question Mary. That was a long time ago,but some of the memories are permanently etched in the mind, like 18 cent hamburgers and 20 cent malts, submarine races and frequent broken hearts.I think the slim skirts were preferred because, for one reason, the fluffy ones took up so much room in the back seat.I looked in my school annual and at that time, mid fifties, skirts with some volume and sweaters were in vogue.
never have tried sherried fruits or poached pears, but brandied peaches are great.

Have y'all looked into getting a Discover Gas Card (good on any brand of gas)? If paid in full every month, there's a 5% cash rebate, which works out to 11.5¢ a gallon if gas is $2.30. Chase has one too, same rebate. They will probably be out of the market soon if gas keeps climbing, but for now it's worth it.

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

Class of ??? I graduated in '53, and the skirts were long and skinny. My freshman year I was the second shortest kid in the whole school (about 1200 students) and the summer after, when my Dad got his first teaching job, I grew like Jack's Beanstalk, causing no end of consternation to my parents because I outgrew ALL my clothes and we were flat broke. And moving to a new town. Where he was the Vice-Principal. I recall my step mom doing marathon sewing for a while.

I think the skirts with the crinoline came in about '54, at least in our backward neck of the woods. You had to dip the crinoline in sugar syrup and line dry them to keep them poufy. It was a lot easier getting on a bus with those than in the skinny ones.

Sarv, you might want to reconsider taking that stained glass class. My DS and DIL took a one day at a local community college and that was last fall. She made several small sun catchers since then but now is working on a large piece with a border, and a large initial, and a rose in it, and it looks fabulous! I was looking for a picture but I couldn't find it to attach.

Cable guy is here to hook us up to roadrunner and give us a home network, (no more whining about anyone hogging the phone line) and cable so I guess I better get off here and let him do what he needs to do. Catch y'all later.

Class of '58 here. 1100 just in the graduating class. Crinolines didn't last long.

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

I remember starchy crinolines that made noise when we walked. That was in Hialeah, Fl. about '54.

My Mom used to get mad when I made crinolines too stiff to get through a doorway .... lol

Then we added hoop slips under the crinolines .

The boys at school used to try peeking when the girls were going up the stairwells .

Kidz are nutz sometimes, but we were having so much (clean) fun back then.

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

Oh! What FUN!!! :-D You guys made my day! All this talk about can-can slips...'tight skirts'...and I see BOBBIE SOX in that picture from Robert! How COOL! And would you believe 'saddle oxfords?' (Class of '63 here...just in time for 'White Bucks' and 'Blue Suede' shoes. I think 'Hush Puppy Chukka Boots were just hitting the scene as well. And yes...I was a Pat Boone fan. hehehe)

Robert...thank you SO much for uploading that picture of the Weeping Crabapple. Is that *your* front yard? It's gorgeous! And if it is...how old is the crabapple?

Mary...*Don't* eat *all* that bread pudding! I think that's one thing that my stomach could handle right now. (I think I caught Angel's tummy trouble...yuckky, yuckky, yuckky!)

M5...do you have your mini-greenhouse setup? It's a good thing I checked the temp in mine this afternoon...~sheepish grin here~ The thermometer was 'pegged' at 125. Ssheesh! Whoda thunk? :-D :-D I ventillated immediately and brought it down to about 90°. (I love my GH's! )

Ooops! Gotta run...be back later...

Julie, here is something for your tummy, yogurt with jello. To make it I dissolve jello in hot water and let it cool to lukewarm. Then I take plain yogurt and mix them with a wisk until everything looks the same. I use about a cup and a half of yogurt to about a cup of the jello, then put it in the fridge until it is set. This is something I did years ago to sneak yogurt into my family when they throught they didn't like it. I called it Creamy Jello and they didn't know. LOL

I agree, Robert, that's a beautiful picture of the yard and the blooming tree. It looks like putting in all those walks was a lot of work but you probably save time now not having to mow. You have a lot of nice contrast there with colors, shapes and sizes.

Gonna have some bread pudding now, it's going fast, get it while you can. I'll warm it a bit in the microwave.

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

The tight skirts were fairly long, however. So you couldn't step up onto the first step of a school bus. You had to turn sideways and raise a foot while holding onto some part of the bus and haul yourself up. I remember when Mary Tyler Moore had one of those and the producers of the Dick Van Dyke show would not let her wear it because it scooped in too tight around her behind. A big scandal.
The first time I saw her I didn't know it was her. She and a little girl were a couple of dancing cigarette boxes in an ad for Old Gold cigarettes. Then she was the girl working for the answering service on the ? Diamond show, a detective show. You never saw her face, just her sexy legs and heard her sexy voice.

Oh, I remember the "dancing" old Gold packs and loved them. Ed Sullivan ad? For a long time there was just the one, then the little one joined!!! Was MTM the first (older legs) pack?

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

woodspirit1, I may have to take umbrage at your smarty-pants remark! I've tried all my life to live down being a "know-it-all" because no one likes them. I just was born with a hard-drive (mind) that collects trivia and forgets telephone numbers and names LOL.

(Zone 8b)

Robert thats a super front yard. How long has it been established?

I guess I was Class of 62, but the UK system is a wee bit different so it might be 60 in US terms, probably is. It was a long time ago!! Can can skirts and Tartan "Trews" (slacks), drove my mother nuts, cos "well reared ladies do NOT wear trousers". Well its probably still true but replace do with should and put a slightly different slant on reared!! LOL Did y'all do the beehive hairdo? and the Twist Chubby Checker and Lets Twist Again is probably why we get back trouble now!
Does any one remember that Itzy Bitzy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini?

She was afraid to come out of the locker;
She was as nervous as she could be;
She was afraid to come out of the locker;
She was afraid that somebody would see.

One, two, three, four, tell the people what she wore.
It was an itsy bitsy teenie weenie yellow polka dot bikini
That she wore for the first time today,
An itsy bitsy teenie weenie yellow polka dot bikini,
So, in the locker she wanted to stay.

One, two, three, four, stick around we'll tell you more.

She was afraid to come out in the open,
And so a blanket around her she wore;
She was afraid to come out in the open,
And so she sat bundled up on the shore.

One, two, three, four, tell the people what she wore.
It was an itsy bitsy teenie weenie yellow polka dot bikini
That she wore for the first time today,
An itsy bitsy teenie weenie yellow polka dot bikini
So, in the blanket she wanted to stay.

One, two, three, four, stick around we'll tell you more.

Now she's afraid to come out of the water,
And I wonder what she's gonna do.
Now she's afraid to come out of the water,
And the poor little girl's turnin' blue!

One, two, three, four, tell the people what she wore.

It was an itsy bitsy teenie weenie yellow polka dot bikini
That she wore for the first time today,
An itsy bitsy teenie weenie yellow polka dot bikini
So, in the water she wanted to stay.

From the locker to the blanket,
From the blanket to the shore,
From the shore to the water,
Guess there isn't any more!

You see what y'all have started!! Pass the bread pud while there is some left please. I brought an apple pie but it doesn't compare somehow!

Carol, years are years for graduation regardless of country, LOL. Loved that song but soon tired of it... Same with Henry the VIII, later on...

My very worst for a melody that repeated over and over in my head was about 1960-62, Edith Piaf with her American release of "Milord". I'd hear it on the way to work every day and it would stay all day!

okus - I have a Homer and Jethro record with the "itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini' song on it. Plus 'Hound Dawg' and lots of other goofy ones - some parodies of the hits in those years. LOVE that record!! lol

darius - true that graduation is graduation but different countries have different amount of years in high school - Canada has 4 yr or 5 yr high school, most college bound students take gr 13. Then if you go to the states for school, you can usually enter as a sophomore. That's how I got here. :)

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Laura, not sure I understand that... But itr seems to me that whatever year you finished whatever requirements there were, that would be the year of graduation and elgible for matriculation to a university or college?

I usd to love Homer & Jethro!
