I put all my butterfly pictures on the Butterfly and Hummers Forum if anyone wants to see the rest. I thought they might like them over there but I guess not.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Just wanted to say hi, everyone - I'm sitting at Linda's computer right now - can still feel the spirit of the RU! :-) Glad you all had safe trips home.

Shannon

Bryson, QC(Zone 4a)

Hi Shannon, you bugger-you made it....excellent have a good time .Sent an e-mail to her to say Hi to you...
Ingrid

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 2b)

Shannon, what museum are you inspecting?? Maritime Museum? So sad that we were just a couple of weeks off. Is Linda feeling OK?? Has she recovered from the hordes?

Inanda

Hi Shannon, sorry we missed you. When are you coming up island?

Campbell River, BC(Zone 8a)

Hi Shannon,

Glad you made it safe and sound. I was in Victoria today too. I took my mom to the Brentwood Bay Nursery. I was telling her about the lovely blue primula.....I think it was called Blue Denim....that I saw when we were there for the RU. Naturally she said why didn't you buy one and of course they were out of them today. Sigh. She did pick up four other ones though so she was pretty happy anyhow. While I was waiting for mom I got talking to a lady who said her favourite nursery in the Victoria area is called Marigold Nurseries. Have you ever been there Linda or Heather? It's behind what used to be called the Waddling Dog Inn off the Pat Bay Hwy on the way to the ferry.

Sandy

North Saanich, Canada

Sandy, I go to Marigold all the time as it is our closest, largest nursery. It always has lots of wonderful looking things, also some tropicals inside. And trees, bushes etc. Another good one is Russel Nursery on Wain Road, and MeadowOak Nursery, also on Wain Road-off the road close to the ferry terminal. Russel has lots of good stock, perennials, annuals, and they have bare root stuff inthe spring. MeadowOak is smaller, but I find they have more varieties of smaller stuff.
But Marigold is certainly a favourite!

Glenda

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

Glenda, are you home now???

Campbell River, BC(Zone 8a)

You're back Glenda. I hope you had a good time back east and didn't encounter weather that was too bad. Thanks for the EE. Did you get the passiflora seedlings?

Marigold Nursery sounds good. I'll have to try to get out there some day. Too bad I didn't know about it at the RU as it sounds like it would have been worth a visit.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Hi Ginny, Ingrid, Sandy, Glenda, Jeanne and Linda!

Ginny, this is just a vacation - the one that got moved a week later because of the new job. Don't know which museum will be first on the list...I'm looking forward to it, though.

Ingrid, I have a jasmine plant for you - I won't be home for another week, though, so we'll have to hook up sometime after then. It's snowing here in Saskatoon (!!!) - so I think I'll keep the jasmine indoors tonight ;-) Fortunately Linda set me up with lots of packing materials (thanks again, Linda) - so it should make it back to Quebec in one piece.

It sounds like you guys did quite well at the RU, packing all those visits into the time you had. There could have been a second RU immediately after, for the Sidney bookshops, Marigold nursery, tea at the Empress....

Bryson, QC(Zone 4a)

Thank You so very much.... Shannon & Linda so very much for getting the jasmine..I kicked myself for not getting another one while I was there.

Shannon its going to 20 this Sunday/Monday up home this week-end..wooohoo
Looking forward getting together when you get back home, to hear about your job and all.

Sandy, is the elephant ear growing?? I was starting to get worried about it. OF the three I bought, only one had any sort of growth on it before I left, and I haven't checked with to see if the other one has started??? She is not a plant person, so I hope I still have SOETHING alive when I get home!!!

Glenda

Victoria,, BC(Zone 8b)

Sandy,I used to go to Marigold quite a bit when we first started gardening and still drop in occasionally, and always find something to buy, but over the years more nurseries opened up that were nearer to us, it does have some nice tropicals. I love Russell's and always find something different out there. I don't think I've been in MeadowOak. Remember and let us know if you are going to be in Victoria for any length of time.
Heather

Campbell River, BC(Zone 8a)

Glenda the EE isn't showing any signs of growth yet. I haven't grown one before so I don't know what to expect. When I was in Chinatowna few days before the RU I picked up a piece of taro root for 28 cents because I read somewhere that you can grow them. I think they're similar or something. That isn't doing anything either.

Heather, I will definitely let you know when I'm coming down for a longer period of time. On thursday it was just a quick trip down and back home with our only sidetrips being Dinter Nursery on the way down and Brentwood Bay.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Speaking of Brentwood Bay...when I was on the Mill Bay-Brentwood ferry on Thursday morning, the captain (Captain Jack - a very nice fellow) told me that the water in Saanich Inlet is 800 ft deep - deeper than anywhere in the Georgia Strait. So the little Mill Bay ferry crosses deeper water than the big ferries that go between Vic and Van.

Apparently there is hardly any circulation in the deepest parts of the Saanich Inlet, so scientists study the water down there. Like those lakes (meromictic? I've forgotten the word) where there is no circulation. Here's a pic, for those unfamiliar with the area. Hard to believe that that tiny stretch of water between Mill Bay and Brentwood goes deeper than between Swartz Bay and Tsawwassen.

That's really interesting Shannon. I didn't know that. I wonder if there are any strange creatures down there. I've always thought it would be neat to kayak in that area but I think it can get pretty windy.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

It was fairly smooth sailing last week...that ferry does occasionally have to stop sailing because of wind, but the inlet is relatively sheltered. Calmer than the Georgia Strait anyway. There's a really pretty, uninhabited little island right by the ferry route - I've often wondered what it would be like to live there, or at least pull up in a canoe or kayak and go exploring.

Maybe we'll discover a new sea monster there....Saanopogo.... lol

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Sorry we missed you as well, Shannon. I'm glad you made it and learned so much about the Saanich nurseries, etc. Maybe we'll see you at the RU next time. Dawn

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

I'm sorry I had to miss meeting you too, Dawn. It sure was nice to see leafy trees, though, even if I missed the RU - everything was brown down east when I left for this trip.

I'm gradually meeting everyone one by one...lol... met Christine (ceedub) last fall, and Linda last week - Ingrid soon, as I have a jasmine for her - but I'm looking forward to RU#2. Was there any discussion on where/when?

Shannon

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

No, not really. We were lucky if we decided who and were we were going that particular day! :D

Bryson, QC(Zone 4a)

Shannon, speaking of the nxt RU..What do you think about having one in Ottawa and doing Montreal ect ..???
We could give them a real tour ....around??

Or head off into another direction?

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

That has definite possibilities. The Tulip Festival is always fun...and the Montreal Botanical Gardens...whether it is the next RU or sometime later on down the road, it would be neat.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Hi again everyone,

Just wanted to thank the following peeps for cuttings/seedlings that I received at Linda's following the RU (have sent DG mails as well):

Ginny - hibiscus
Sandy - brugs
Jeanne - brug
Sandy - passiflora
Mystery Person - two mystery plants (see pic)
Donna - brug seeds

I hope I've got all this right. Thanks also, Linda and Cheryl, for the great visit and for the CD with 372 RU photos!!! One for every day of the year and some extras.

Here's a pic of the mystery plants - they had each had their own little square pot, but I consolidated them into one baggie (thanks again, Linda, for all the packing material) for the trip home, to save space.

-Shannon

And here's a pic of all my plants back home - not unpacked yet. There are some from Dinter's nursery south of Duncan BC, some from the Blue Rose nursery north of Mill Bay BC, some dug from my grandmother's garden in Mill Bay, some from folks at the RU, a jasmine for Ingrid from a nursery near Linda's (that I forget the name of, at the moment), some from Dutch Grower's in Saskatoon, and some from a nursery on Valley Road in Saskatoon.

The box had a lid on it, and a string handle - fit in the overhead bins of the 5 planes I was on, on the way home :-). The other bag went under the seat in front...plants stuck out and rested between my feet. Most of you have been there! lol Several people in the airports & planes commented that they liked the smell of the jasmine, Ingrid - it does smell quite nice. I hope you like it.

Thanks again for the cuttings & seeds, everyone; I really appreciate it. Especially as I arrived empty-handed, and after the fact. If there's anything I can give any of you in return, either now or later, please let me know.

~Shannon

Shannon, You are something else~~ I'am very GREATUL for the Jasmin that you swung around in 5 planes...Thank-You!
We'll have to share that plant with you so you'll remember the smell of it.
When ever I see you, I have boxes and we'll load them with plants from here-in and from outside for your garden.

Hope, you get rested up-must of been a real trip around for you.

Hi Shannon,

I was only the carrier. All the hibiscus were from Dill Pickle. My house is too cold for Hibiscus. Wilma & /Echoes have to babysit echevarias even - not to mention all the LA iris which cluttered up Echoes house last winter. - How nice it is to be able to say - LAST WINTER.

Glad all your goodies (and yourself) made it home safely.

Inanda aka Ginny

Campbell River, BC(Zone 8a)

Shannon, your mystery plants are the passiflora seedlings that I grew from seeds from a passion fruit so I think they're Passiflora edulis. They look more like other passifloras when they get a bit bigger. I have a couple that got more light so they're taller, are getting tendrils and the leaves are getting lobed. If you got anothe passiflora plant it would be one of the ones from Brenda.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

A-ha - thank you, Sandy! Hopefully Linda's still checking this thread - she has two of them as well. Up until now, my closest guess would have been green peppers! :-)

Ginny, thank you for ferrying the hibiscus. We had talked at one point about me bringing an iris back for you, for someone in Ottawa - but I didn't see it at Linda's. Hope I didn't miss it - ?

Wilma, thanks for the hibiscus - if you have any more info on what species it is, I would be all ears - I'd like to make sure I'm taking care of it correctly. And if there's anything you'd like in return, let me know.

Ingrid - it was my pleasure. I enjoyed walking through the airports with plants - got several knowing looks (or, were they sympathetic looks? lol) And if I hadn't decided to stay in Saskatoon for a week, I probably could have made the trip home in 2 or 3 planes, not 5. :-) The plants got a good dose of fresh air on my dad's deck in Saskatoon; I only had to bring them in a couple of nights due to low temps.

Brenda, here's a pic of the other passiflora - was this from you?

Maybe the last one was from Ginny?

I'm sooo confused ;) LOL

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

I've asked and asked, but it's just not talking! :-) Seems to be happy, tho' - curling its new tendrils around its support. Thanks again, everyone. I'm here for "future considerations", as they say, whenever anyone needs something that I either have or can get my hands on.

I can't tell from the picture, but the ones Ginny brought were from me and they are P. caerulea. She took a couple in pots and some were in baggies of peat.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

I looked it up in PF, and that looks like it, Brenda - good thing Evert posted those seedling photos in the PF entry.

Thank you very much!

I saved two of my plants that I started from seed last year. They have very different looking foliage. One has very thin leaf segments, but both have five lobes. Of course sometimes when they are babies, the leaves don't have five lobes.

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

I got a couple of those too, Brenda. They are doing wonderfully. Have climbed at least a foot now, past their new pyrimid trellis. Got to find something bigger to climb now. They are happy and healthy though. Thanks so much!

Hope you took one of each Donna. I'm anxious to see the narrow lobed one bloom, to see if it's different from the other.

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

I will definitely take pictures when the big events happen....Grandma! :D
