Think these two are a couple of distraught Cardinals fans?

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

Yeah I agree with kathy the astroes have just looked better than the cardinals. It seems the Cardinals aren't playing the best baseball when they need to.
The angels have their back against the wall also. I think that bad call gave them a chance to say we were cheated out of it and they quit playing. I really thought it would be the angels and the cardinals. It still might.

Kelli he pitches and can play any positon. He started the first game but only pitched one inning. He did walk one and got two groundballs back to him and struck out one. Then he played short, third and caught 2 innings. They tied that game 4-4. In the second game he caught and threw two runners out. One at second and one at third. They won that game 1-0. He didn't get any hits today but did get on base by getting hit once. Overall he was impressive catching and the umpire came up to us as we were leaving and told him how good he looked catching. This was only about the fourth or fifth game he has caught. Mostly has pitched and played third.

L.A. (Canoga Park), CA(Zone 10a)

Well, Georgia, I'm glad somebody won today.

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

Kelli I was sitting here watching the game feeling for you. There' s always next year and they will be back. Don't go looking for the clift. It sure hurts when your team goes that far and then just falls apart. Last Sunday if you remember it was me sitting here for 18 innings and then having the big let down. It was bad enough for me and you. Anyway here's looking forward to seeing the Angel's playing the Brave's in the WS next year.

Fenton, MO(Zone 5b)

Yep, Astros are playing tight ball and we're not. I don't think we'll pull this out unless they play ball like they played the first game. Outlook is cloudy to pure downpour. I think I've went through my depression already. The problem is if they win tonight, I'll go right back to hoping, and be let down again. Well, thats what you get when your a baseball fan, can't have it both ways.

Perhaps they will sit down and think about this over the winter and figure out what goes wrong during playoffs, when the regular season goes so well. The few things I think are being done wrong are: Walker is being left in the game and he's NOT hitting, switch him out for Taguchi by the 4th inning, same thing with another non hitter, switch him out for Mabry. Taguchi and Mabry have carried this ball club this year through our injuries and they are not given enough chances at bat to get going. One at bat in the last inning, with 2 outs is a hope and a prayer, and it hasn't worked.

Sorry about the Angels Kelli, we'll both have next year!

All in all, it was a good year for baseball and I'll miss it like I do every year. About February I will be twitching and my eyes will be rolling back into my head.

L.A. (Canoga Park), CA(Zone 10a)

We hardly ever have thunder, but it has been thundering off and on all day. The baseball gods must be unhappy. ;-)

Fenton, MO(Zone 5b)

Kelli.. I believe in baseball Gods. :) In fact, I know some of their rules:

1. Root, root, root for your team.
2. Never ever gloat about a win to an opposing team fan. (your allowed to be excited about your win, but no "LOSER!" "ha ha ha" allowed. If you do, they will get you in the future.
3. You can never leave a live game at the stadium if your team is losing. This is considered deserting a sinking ship. Their still on the field, you stay in the stands.
4. Never give up hope, even if you have to hang on by your fingernails, (sinking ship theory applies here too)
5. Be humble in your wins, hold your head up in your losses.
6. Just wait until next year!

:)

I'm heading for KY to see my brother, if it goes to 7 days, I'll be back at Busch Stadium on the 20th. I can't even imagine what that would be like, if we get that far.

Cardinals won in the top of the ninth with a 3 run home run by Albert Pujols.

I don't think I'll have a voice tomorrow. It was beyond belief.

L.A. (Canoga Park), CA(Zone 10a)

That was one of the best ninth innings I have seen in a while. Pujols finally did what he's paid the big bucks to do.

The Astros have an absolute gift for coming back from ahead and losing, so this isn't over yet by any means. I wish it were! LOL

L.A. (Canoga Park), CA(Zone 10a)

During the game, one of the announcers said that no World Series has ever been played in "the biggest state in the union". I wouldn't think so, and I doubt that any of the next dozen or so expansion teams will be in Anchorage or Fairbanks.

With all due respect to Marylyn, does anyone else find that buzzing sound they play at Astros games to be annoying? DH says, "They need to fumigate that place."

Houston, TX(Zone 9b)

Hey, hey, don't bash the BUZZZING...We don't have much, but we have the buzzing... I sat back and read for as long as I could before having to jump on and defend our B's. LOL!

I know there are two games left in the series, but last night I cried myself to sleep... Okay, not really, but I bet my 8 year old did. Last year when we got knocked out in the NLCS, he cried and cried. It was really pitiful. So if you don't want to make my little boy cry, you have to root for the 'Stros!!!

I do agree with Kathy, the 9th inning was beyond belief. I absolutely couldn't believe it!

Don't know how I have missed out on this thread for so long, but I will be watching, so be kind and root for the underdog (which is always us)!

Sheila

L.A. (Canoga Park), CA(Zone 10a)

Congrats to the Astros and their fans, but I think now Kathy is crying. ;-)

Fenton, MO(Zone 5b)

Congratulations to the Astro fans, they played some fine ball. I think it must be quite exciting for the club and fans going to the World Series for the first time. Knock em dead!

No, I didn't cry, let down yes.. but I didn't cry. My 8 year old niece called me during the game and said "Are we losing?" and her voice cracked, I felt more sorry for her than I did me by a long shot.

They say the wrecking ball on Busch Stadium will swing in 3 weeks. I'd like to go down and get some pictures while they do it. I'm kinda betting it will draw a crowd.

Whew.. the season is nearly at an end and I'd like to say I enjoyed baseball just as much as I ever have. Theres just nothing like it in the summer. I always look forward to spring and baseball.

Thanks for joining in this year, its been fun talking to you all. Lets go at it again next year.. and in between perhaps we can post trades, and updates on our teams.

Tomball, TX(Zone 9a)

Hell may not have frozen over, but a cold front sure passed thru! Stros in the World Series at last?? YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Look for me at the game on Tuesday, I will be the girl with the beer ( : Go Stros! bzzzzzzz

Another Astro Fan here!!!

GO STROS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fenton, MO(Zone 5b)

Wow cool, 2 new names.

At least the Astros and White Sox are making this an exciting World Series! Both games its back and forth, back and forth. Love seeing teams fight to the end of all 9 innings.

Fenton, MO(Zone 5b)

Georgiaredclay... keep me posted on Braves changes and Kelli on the Angels?

We have quite a few players going up for free agency. Pitchers Matt Morris and Jason Marquis. Grudzeilanek, Nunez, Luna, Sanders Mabry and Taguchi. Walker retired after the last game, hate to see him go but it was time, too many injuries and he just didn't play well.

I want to keep Nunez and Mabry and most of all Grudzeilanek. His bat went cold in the playoffs, but he's an excellent 2nd baseman and he was an important part of us getting as far as we did. Actually, its just so hard for me to let anyone go, I get emotionally attached to them all. LOL

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

Yeah I agree I think a player should have to stay where they sign. Of course that will never happen. The one from the Braves that I worry about Is Furcal the shortstop. He had a very good second half of the season batting and a good year defensively. If he leaves we will be hurting there.

L.A. (Canoga Park), CA(Zone 10a)

With the Angels, Jarrod Washburn and Bengie Molina are the free agents that I can think of right now. Washburn is a pitcher and I think he's overrated, especially for what he is being paid now (has Boras as agent - need I say more?). He doesn't impress me much, so I don't care if he goes. I hope they keep Bengie Molina.

As for the Dodgers, heaven only knows what will happen there. The only free agent I can think of Jeff Weaver - a fairly decent pitcher but another Boras client. Team was gutted last year and went from Western Division winner in 2004 to 4th place in the awful Western Division of 2005. The GM is Paul Depodesta, but the fans call him Stupidesta. (He's from the "Moneyball" school of thought. I'm not saying that is stupid in itself, just giving you more data.) He was hired two years ago and has been getting rid of everyone from the prior regime. All old regime players and staff are on the endangered species list. He traded great players and fan favorites like Paul LoDuca and Dave Roberts in 2004. About the only players left from the old regime are Odalis Perez (fairly decent but sometimes inconsistant pitcher), Cesar Izturis (gold glove and All-Star shortstop), and Eric Gagne (one of the best closers in the game). I don't know what will happen with Perez. I would almost bet money the Izturis will be traded. He has trade value, and when he was out injured, Oscar Robles proved to be a serviceable replacement and at 1/10 the salary. Gagne will probaby disappear this year. He'll be a free agent at the end of next year and according to some local newspaper, has expressed his displeasure in the Stupidesta regime. The Dodgers manager left a few days after the season ended so we'll be having a new manager soon. The Dodgers are "rebuilding", but a great old team like that should never have to rebuilt. Do the Yankees ever rebuild? I could rant all day about the Dodgers and Stupidesta, but you've got the jist of it here. The Dodgers are my favorite team but many times I wonder why.

Dodger Stadium is being remodeled. They are putting in new seats. The current multicolored seats are going back to the original 1962 multicolored scheme. http://losangeles.dodgers.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/la/ballpark/renovations.jsp

I'm kinda rooting for the Astros in the World Series, but that seems to be the kiss of death for whoever I root for this year. However, I don't have a real strong preference for one team over the other.

Kathy, why does Tony LaRussa wear sunglasses all of the time? Also, if you start a new baseball thread, could you link it to this one? I don't look at the General forum all that often, and might miss a new thread.

Fenton, MO(Zone 5b)

Kelli.. Tony LaRussa fancies himself the phyciatrist of baseball. He lives, breaths, eats it. (information I summed up on reading his book Three Nights In August). He wears sunglasses because he thought/thinks that the opposing team players/coaches/manager might read his actions in his eyes. Now before you go off and think he's a lunatic, he has discovered certain teams stealing signs from the catcher. So, he takes every measure in "hiding" his thinking by covering up his eyes.

Sure will do the link on the new baseball forum.

Georgiaredclay.. did we ever discuss JD Drew? After I wrote up there that I get emotionally attached to all players, I remembered there was one I didn't get attached to and that was JD Drew, who got traded to the Braves along with Eli Marrero. Now with the Dodgers, The announcers here would make a comment about him followed by dead silence, it was funny. They say "and JD DREW is back on the diabled list with a sprained whatever".. then silence and we knew what they were thinking and they knew what we thinking NO KIDDING! I was never so happy to see him go. His knee hurt, his ankle hurt, his wrist hurt, he stubbed his toe and can't play. Hated to see Eli go with him though, I liked him alot. Eli did well on your team, batting over 300, (yeah, i kept up with him) then he was traded to the Royals and he seemed to flunk really bad. He got traded to the Orioles about 5 so months ago, I was happy to see that, to see him get back on a contending team. I know his contract was up this year and am wondering where he'll end up. Maybe back with us? :)

Fenton, MO(Zone 5b)

oh btw Kelli... we'll take Gagne. :)

L.A. (Canoga Park), CA(Zone 10a)

It should come as no surprise that J.D. Drew is a Stupidesta acquistion. Not everything Stupidesta has done has turned out to be for the worst, but I'd say half of it has been.

Fenton, MO(Zone 5b)

I think everyone's mouth dropped a mile when we heard how much the Dodgers paid for him, something like 55 million for 5 years? NOT anywhere near worth that. LaRussa said he never mingled with the rest of the team, kept to himself, played his hand held gameboy during batting practice. Thats the attitude i got from him on the field, very disintersted in it all.

L.A. (Canoga Park), CA(Zone 10a)

I never had the chance to develop much of an impression of him at all. He was on the DL for so long that I half forgot that he existed. But yes, the Dodgers paid too much for him and too much for Derek Lowe.

Tomball, TX(Zone 9a)

Kathy999, thanks for clearing that up about LaRussa, I just thought he was VAIN ( :
I am going to Minute Maid park tonight, and have every confidence ROY O will save the day!! Go STROS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! jackie

Fenton, MO(Zone 5b)

davesgarden5, how exciting for you, GOOD LUCK! I know you'll have a grand time, its really special going to a WS game.

I hope the UMPS get things right tonight. If they don't, Lord have mercy for MMP may come down on them and make them wish they did.

HAVE FUN and GO ASTROS!

btw davesgarden5, I wear sunglasses alot, but its not because I'm vain, I always thought they were the greatest tool invented when you wanted to go somewhere without putting eye makeup on. LOL

Katy, TX(Zone 9b)

davesgarden5... Being a newbie to DG, I might be considered "green", but after reading your post above, I'm also green with envy because of you going to the game tonight!! Be sure to cheer the boys on personally for me while you are there, but rest assured, you'll also probably hear hubby and I cheering all the way from Katy! Let's hope the umps have their glasses on and their hearing aids in since they obviously didn't the other night! LOL I STILL can't believe that MLB can instruct us to keep the roof open at MMP tonight! Grrrrrrrr!

GO ASTROS!!
Pat

L.A. (Canoga Park), CA(Zone 10a)

I heard that the Astros have shaved. I am glad. Maybe that will help. If not, at least they won't be grubby looking.

Katy, TX(Zone 9b)

I saw a few of them interviewed on TV this morning and the one's I saw now have a gotee (sp?) instead of the beard. Looks much nicer, but nothing beats a clean-shaven man's face! :)

Fenton, MO(Zone 5b)

My gameday plan:

Get the laundry done, clean up the house, cook dinner, sit down and watch World Series.

Only 5 more possible games left of baseball. Gotta enjoy it.

L.A. (Canoga Park), CA(Zone 10a)

Yeah, and the Astros have to win, if for no other reason, to extend the season out as long as possible.

San Jacinto County, TX(Zone 8a)

Hey Sports Fans;
I live 60 miles North of Houston!

My windows are rattling.
Wow!
Did someone Win, Lose?

I watch tha occasional game.
Tonight someone in Houston on local news offered his wife for a ticket.
Haha, don't tell! I wonder lol.

Highjack heah!
I made this blog for the victims of Fema or tha Red Cross regarding hurricanes.
http://fema-redcross.blogspot.com/

Perhaps not a highjac' at all!
I'm, was a Houstonian off and on for 28 years. From 1939 till lol.
At 70 I notice tha (highlites) Sometimes. Smile!

Fenton, MO(Zone 5b)

WOW, what a great game! White Sox won in 14 innings! It sure was a fight though.

I can't believe I was sitting watching a baseball game at 1:00 in the morning! I'm tired and going to bed.

Katy, TX(Zone 9b)

What a heart-breaker of a game! Noble effort, but we just weren't able to pull it off. With my alarm clock going off at 4:30 AM, I wasn't able to see the whole game, but did make it to midnight. As much as I want the Astros to win this thing, I think the fat lady might be clearing her voice.

Pat

Houston, TX(Zone 9b)

Pat,

I have a tendency to agree. I made it to the beginning of the 14th and then went to sleep. Glad I did. How depressing. I would like to see us win at least one game. I hate being shut-out and I hate being swept.

I will say that these two teams have been well matched as far as strengths and weaknesses. It has been several years since I have seen a World Series consistently this tight.

Well, maybe tonight is Backe's night to shine and keep the hope alive. Dare, I hope?!?!

Go 'Stros!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

It WAS a great game, even though we didn't pull it off. I do hope they can win the game tonight!!

Go Astros!

I need more caffeine...
~ Marylyn

Katy, TX(Zone 9b)

"I need more caffeine..." I hear ya Marylyn! I'm a bit bleary eyed this morning as well. I sure hope the team can manage to at least win one game in order to avoid a sweep. As great a pitcher as Roy-O is, I don't understand why Garner didn't pull him after/during that blowout inning.

By the way Marylyn, are you the same Marylyn from the AWGS pond forum? I'm a regular reader of that forum, but don't post much. If you are indeed that person, I appreciate all that you contribute over there and all that you do for others. :)

shuggins... yes, these two teams ARE well matched, and I hope that you're right and that Backe will be our hero tonight! And yes, you dare hope! :)

Pat

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Hi, Pat. Nope... Wrong Marylyn. :-) I like ponds, but I don't have any or know much about them. Maybe some day.

Go Backe!
~ Marylyn

Fenton, MO(Zone 5b)

Well, if we're all tired, imagine what the baseball players are feeling after being out on the field at 1am.

Pat! you can't go to bed with your team playing, that makes the baseball Gods mad! lol

I saw Garner threw a chair down the dugout steps, he was so frustrated. I hate it when they show the dugout of the losing team. The Astros looked like they were about ready to cry, or already had been crying.

Thats 2 tough teams out there though, they just keep clawing. Its been a good series to watch.
