Cottage Rose your husband did just what was right. You never want to surprise a bear. Slowly back up and raise your voice so they know that you are a human and they usually move away. They think of us the same way we do of them and don't want to mess with us and we with them. I'm sure they went back to where the bear was cause the trail they were on was the only way to or out of where they were. The bear will leave often when you make noise. My wife and I when picking huckelberries always talk sing, what ever to make noise to let them know we are there. It is kind of fun cause we sing old nursery rymes and dumb songs all day long.
