My first VooDoo bloom

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Well, it stinks, but it isn't as bad as I thought it would be. I'm sure closed up in a room with it would send me screaming something else, but outside, it's no problem.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

LOL It's bad when you have to put the outside to enjoy them.

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

Couldn't resist. Just won an auction on ebay for a palm-sized A. Konjac. Is that large enough to bloom? Here's a link to the auction to see a better pic: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4370667077&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1#ebayphotohosting

Wish I could tell you. I just got my bulb last year and it was already huge. My experience with VooDoo bulbs is pretty much zilch. They sure do make pretty summer trees though. That is what I really wanted.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Did I say two days????? I meant two weeks,LOL!

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

Catsmeow, where do you get your bulbs from?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Thanks. Now you tell me. LOL!

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6a)

Oh boy, I've gone and done it, too! I just couldn't stand not smelling it for myself. So, do you all keep yours in a pot year round?

OMW!!!!!! I wne to the Philadelphia Zoo today and GUESS what they have more than a dozen of growing along the path into the primate house!!!! they are getting thier leaves but no flowers on any of them this year - my batteries died in the camera or I would have a pic. I couldn't belive it - I REALLY hope they know what they're doing.. LOL!

Heather

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6a)

Everyone will just think it's the monkeys! That's funny!

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

MaryEv, Any idea how long it will take for your bulb to become "blooming-size"?

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6a)

I'm not sure, but I think they're a couple of years off.

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

I got my amorph konjac bulb from another DG member in a trade. I won my amorph paeoniifolius on ebay.Igot my amorph bulbifer from a local man, along with another variety that I can't recognize the name of on the tag. And I recently bought quite a few arum cornutus bulbs at a local nursery.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Boy, your place is going to stink next year. LOL! Can't wait to see pictures of them all blooming.

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

I joined the club! Now I wonder how many years before I get a bloom ('-'?)

Dinner anyone ? ? ?

tee-hee

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Gosh, I think I'll pass on eating one of them. LOL! Once you smell the flower, you might never want to even grow one again. LOL! They do stink!

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

brugie, any pictures of the full flowering of this odoriphic specimen???

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Pebble, I didn't take anymore pictures. It didn't open much more than what the first pictures showed. I just cut it off about 5 days ago. The very top had finally flopped over. Now that I've seen it bloom, I will probably not let it do that again. I wasn't impressed at all with it. The smell wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but I wouldn't want it in the house, either.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

seems people either love em or hate em.....
well, it was fun reading the posts and seeing the photos, but without the aroma....we didnt have the experience you did.
It was great reading about it, thanks for sharing....

They are unique blooms. I wonder if the smell drives away visitors? LOL!

Hiouchi, CA(Zone 8b)

Brugie

the UK web site says people flock to the Gardens when it is stinking the most ???
i would say the smell is overcome by the curiosity of the flower size :-)

Dick

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

That's probably because it is stinking when it is in full bloom. LOL! Gosh, one whiff and I wouldn't be rushing to see one. Maybe from a distance.

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

Mine is finally in full bloom. Sorry no pics. I really like the bloom but the smell leaves a LOT to be desired.

Instead of calling them voodoo lilies they should be called doodoo lilies becasue the voodoo that they do smells like doodoo when they bloom!

I took mine to work to show it off yesterday and now I can't get that smell out of my truck. My dad owned this truck before I got it and he smoked in it. I used an auto odor remover type spray from walmart and it got rid of the smoke odors but it won't touch this one. I have sprayed about half a dozen times since getting home from work yesterday and the smell is still there.

Hiouchi, CA(Zone 8b)

Time for a new Truck David :-)

Dick

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

LOL! I can't imagine having to go down the road with that smell in the truck with me. Oh my gosh....talk about nasty. Hope you find something that will work on it.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

LOL!!! I needed a good laugh today,Thanks David!!!

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

LOL catsmeow....that is too funny, but im sure not to you.....try putting a bowl of vinegar in the truck, while you'r e not driving it of course.....
good luck!

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

LOL David. I guess you won't get any riders anytime soon.

Mine must have died because it never came up this year.

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

LOL. doodoo lily. Too funny. Speaking of doodoo, have you tried using fabreeze? That stuff is supposed to get rid of pet odors.

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

Emily,
I used something I bought from walmart to get rid of the smoke odors. I think it was made by Maguires(spelling ?) I also used febreeze and together they got all of the smoke out which came as a surprise to me.

Today the doodoo lily odor is gone but it took almost 2 days for it to disappear own its own.

My amorph paeoniifolius sprout is finally starting to grow,so it should be in bloom soon.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Are you going to take it to work? LOL!!

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

Shirley,
I sure am but I can promise you that, that one will be riding in the bed of the truck and not up front with me!!(LOL)

http://www.aroid.org/genera/amorphophallus/paeoniifolius/index.html

This link will open up a page that shows a flower of what the other one will look like when it blooms. The bulb for this one (paeoniifolius) is not quite as large as my konjac bulb which is about the size of a basketball. The paeoniifolius bulb is about the size of a large honeydew melon.

Brookhaven, PA(Zone 7a)

OK -- is it me or does the bloom look like a ............

Heather

(skulking back to the gutter from whence she came....)

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

They do */;-)

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

Oh my. What a good laugh I got from those pictures. No wonder it's called "Amorphophallus"!!! Amorpho - phallus. I think mother nature has a sense of humor too.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I have been reading this to my husband and we are both hysterical! Then I got to the pics and I think I blushed! Glad someone else said it! I had one of these and another kind of 'voodoo' lily years ago but they didn't live. Then I made a trade with a DGer and mailed my end for these and the disappeared from DG and the world apparently. I think I am not meant to have them. I think I got six kids worth of dirty diapers instead. LOL What is the other type by the way? I think the other one sent up leaves in sort of rings with little leaf fingers hanging off. I don't think the other kind was Amorphallus.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Michele, if you want to see a lot of them, check out this site. David sent this page to me some time ago and there are some neat ones on here. http://www.aroid.org/genera/amorphophallus/amlist.html

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Then there is the family of stinkhorn fungus , some of which pop up every few years in a garden.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

There are some really cool ones on there! I have to say though, the flowers are really something else!

I have seen one of those stinkhorns before. The kids and I were out walking and thought it was a carrot sticking out of the ground. LOL
