My first VooDoo bloom

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I've never had one of these until last summer, so this will be my first bloom. I don't know if I'm getting excited about it or scared to death. The bulb is in my greenhouse and it is a small structure, so I'm afraid it is going to gag me when it opens and I go out to look at it. Anna_Z told me she didn't think they were that bad, so I'm hoping she is right. Since I no longer smoke, I'm afraid my smeller might be kind of touchy. LOL! Here is the bulb sitting in a ten inch clay saucer. The next picture will be the top of it. It's big enough that I can't get a good picture in the greenhouse because I can't back up far enough. Next post will have the top of it and the third will have a strange lop sided picture to get it all in the picture, diagonally.

Cock your head to the side and you can get a look at the whole plant. It's a very gray day here so the lighting isn't good at all.

Wow Shirley, your flower is bigger than mine!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Susie, it is going to be huge. I am anxious to see it open. I wonder how long it will take. Any idea?

Valrico, FL(Zone 9b)

Ooooooooo. That's gonna stiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnk.

Outside of that. Congrats. It looks great.

:-)

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Thanks a lot Chris. I don't like the sound of that remark. LOL! Seriously, I'm anixous to get it over with so I can grow the gorgeous tree that comes next.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Shirley, do the words "road kill" conjure up any smells to you? The buzzards were circling my yard. I posted a pic of my flower, it took about a month to open.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Oh no....I'm going to have some time to wait yet then. Road Kill..................Yuck!! This isn't going to be pretty, is it?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Nope, you might want to move it out to the greenhouse when it opens. I tricked Lauren into smelling the one in the garden, she is not talking to me right now, lol.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

OH MY LORDY

I forgot about mine
I had taken it out to pot it up and forgot about it
Ran out in the other room when I saw your thread

Oh no, did it stink Karyn? I'm scared of that stink and if Lauren had trouble with it, I'm sure I will too.

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

I am laughing so hard here! Its so big Shirley! My word! And Karyn... its beautiful! Im glad at this moment I dont have smell-a-monitor tho!
Poor Lauren! LOL

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

No ,but the dogs were knocking the gate down to try to get in that room
I can't smell it....
is that normal?
although I haven't gotten up close......
It was next to the kittylitter box........
maybe thats why Chuck said it need changing....lol

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Susie, yours looks really short compared to mine and CC's. Must be the difference having them in the ground. Wait until all the babies start coming up. I must have had 50 babies on mine last year that I gave to our local nursery. Next year, I'm going to keep them. Anna Z told me how to grow them. Hey, I don't like the smell of dirty kitty litter either, but the dang cat won't stay out of it.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

LOL!!!!!! ;0)
Psssst! I told you so!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I can just hear you laughing at me right now. LOL! I'm still excited about the darn thing. I love the umbrella it makes during the summer.

Houston, TX(Zone 9b)

Wow! That is one serious bloom! If I weren't so scared of killing them (I'm just not good with bulbs), I'd love to get one. Amazingly cool!

St. Paul, MN(Zone 4b)

Very, very cool Shirley. Thank you for sharing this with us.

Wow Shirley! You are going to have quite the tale to tell there once it opens. It's huge and healthy looking. Please keep us posted with pictures of it's progress. I bet that box of kleenex will be replaced with a gas mask when it blooms! Your DH will have a good excuse not to enter the GH when it opens and fills the air with it's Glory. LOL

Tulsa, OK(Zone 7a)

oh you all they are so neat so awwesome to see. i have one did not know it was growing in yard it was rotted one i trieed to grow threw out its up a foot now even in cold..i'm really hoping it will grow and get like yours.. smell and all...

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I think I'll stick some Vicks up my nose before I get brave and go in to take a picture and then haul it out to whack it off. No way can I work in that greenhouse with any kind of nasty odor in there during the day. I don't have to worry about Jim coming into the greenhouse. The closest he gets to my flowers is to ride by them on the mower.

Ha, Your so funny and the vicks is a good idea.
I will be interested in hearing how you describe the smell of your beauty.
Good Luck

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

My brother is the one that has me scared. He said that in Calif. where he lives, they are called corpse plants. Well, that isn't particularly inviting.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Now that's a fitting name, lol. I have the ones that have the small flowers, they aren't too bad, but man, this one stinks! I didn't think to put Vicks under my nose, that should work but what do I do with the buzzards that are circling?
Oh CC, Bleu wanted to bite the flower off. I bet he would have rolled on it like he did the dead bird he found.

I have heard them called by that also. I have described the odor to others as a smell of the styrofoam hamburger container in the trash bin during the summer time. LOL
The smell tends to invite only flies & beetles. Oh and Vultures to Datdogs garden.

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

That is too cool Shirley!! Shoot ... I need to go look for mine, I do not remember seeing it!

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

it does smell like a rotting cadaver. yuk! i have a week stomach, can't handle that foul odor. compared to AP, AP will smell like perfume if compared.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

You guys went and made Cala feel inferior! She just has a little one. :)

Aren't you supposed to grow them in a shopvac box or something? I swear I saw that somewhere. LOL

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

LOL! Chele, your a nut, mine opened the box by itself.
Deb,close your eyes and use your nose, you'll find it.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6a)

Which Voodoo is this?

I'm dying of jealousy, by the way. One day, I hope to have one big stinky flower myself! :)

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I have no idea, but Doc can tell you.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

This one is A. Konjac.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Thanks Bob. I knew you would fill in here with the name. I was pretty sure what it was, but wasn't sure how to spell it.

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

All I got from mine last year was the tree,as it had already bloomed when it was sent to me. It is planted in the ground and made many little ones around the base. I have been told that they begin to grow here around mid may and once they start they go into overdrive as far as growing goes.

I can't wait to see it bloom!!! I've got a few people i'd like to box that smell up for and send it to them!!!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

LOL! David, I never would have thought of that.

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

Oh they're all people I work with Shirley, don't worry!!!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Whew!! LOL!

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

this thing can't possibly stink any worse than all those stapelias that I grow. I have one stapelia that blooms a flower the size of a quarter that will stink up my entire (10ft H x 12ftW x 18ft L) gh with just one bloom open.
