I'm not crazy about stinking plants. If this is too bad when it opens, I'll just cut it off and burn it. I just want the bulb for the umbrella tree it makes during the summer.
My first VooDoo bloom
don't burn it,just find somone you don't like and shove in their mailbox!!!! (LOL)
LOL! I don't have anyone I dislike that much.
I know you will pass it on S. Shoot if mine don't come back in the ground, you know I will take yours, but,I told you about the smell,LOL!
LOL! I'm getting ready to go out this morning, camera in hand. Vicks in the other.
Shirley, if you see buzzards circling over your greenhouse, open the Vick's fast!
Well, nothing yet. However, it grew enough last night that it hit the roof and curved the top a little. It is now on the east side of the garage, outside, and it isn't going back in the greenhouse. Can't take any more chances!! It's sitting in an old automatic washer tub that I use for a planter. No buzzards yet. LOL!
Those things are amazing!
LOL Shirley.
Susie, I have a dog that will roll over over the things he finds. I think the stinkier it is the more he rolls on it. LOL
Lookin Good! I Just imagined a scene from The Classic Birds~ only you had Vultures attacking your GH trying to get in! I bet your Brugs are relieved also...LOL
Well, your moving things outdoors and I am about to move things back in. We are getting Rain/Thunder and a Wind storm today. Yikes
Ada, I have a dog that does that too. Then he wants me to pet him.
Shirley, your flower is way taller than mine.
I bet that is the difference in being in the ground and sitting on a shelf. This has to take a lot out of the bulb the way it is. I wonder if when one starts growing....if potting it up would help? Anyone?
They don't put out roots until about the time the leaf comes out a little later in the spring, so I don't think it matters if you pot it up during the flowering period.
I imagine it does take a lot out of the bulb; but, I guess that's why they only flower every few years. The other years, they are just storing energy for the big show.
They certainly are weird and amazing plants! I have one which put up two leaves last year. This year when I repotted I discovered the bulb had split in two. I also found about half a dozen quarter sized mini bulbs in the plant which I also potted up. I don't think mine will flower this year, as neither bulb is as big as yours.
Erik
Erik, my bulb looks like it is going to split into three pieces. It looked that way when I dug it last year. I didn't know if they were supposed to do that or not. Thought maybe it wasn't going to make it or something. LOL! So, I don't have to look forward to the bloom again next year? That will be a relief, I'm sure. Thanks for the info.
Regarding the "smell" and vultures, take a look at this thread, then scroll down a ways to datdog's pics.

I wonder if there is a particular time in their life cycle when the bulbs split?
Maybe after bloom? Or do they split all the time?
Anyone know?
datdog's pictures are hilarious. I don't think we have any Turkey Vultures in SF, so I should be safe from that.
Erik
Cool thread, Emily. Thanks.
If mine is going to completely split, it should do it this year. It has some pretty good looking craters in it now.
When do you plants bulbs for those? I think I'm going to grow some next year despite my DH's objections.
Since you all have been posting about your lilies,I have been watching for mine to break through the ground. I was told by someone in my own growing zone within an hour and a half of me that it wouldn't sprout before May at the earliest.
I last checked it day before yesterday and still no sign of anything, well I went and looked again today and it is about 6 inches out of the ground. I also did a little digging around the top to see if all the little babies it had made were still alive. All I found of them was mush but I dug a little further down and found my mother bulb alive and well.
Looks like i'll finally get to see mine sometime soon as well.
I had never heard of these - very unique looking!
Pretty unique smelling too. Mine has started drawing flies today.
Hows the bloom Shirley? LOL Wish I could see your face!
It still isn't open, Shelly. I don't know how to explain what it looks like, but the outter part has loosened from the center and it is feeling more like it has empty space inside it now. I'm assuming it is going to pop open pretty soon. If it isn't going to do more than it has, it is no problem.
Does anyone have one to trade? I have lots of things to trade but don't have a voodoo lily. I wanna brag too. lol I think they are soooo neat. I have looked for them in my area but can't find any at the nurseries. If anyone in So. Calif knows where I can buy one PLEASE let me know.
Thanks, I would appriciate it.
I dont have anything to trade yet , im just starting out. but i would like to grow one also.
Can i put the flower in the mailbox at the end of the road ? LOL ...
Nice! Is it open yet? My konjac bulb looks to be about the same size as yours. Last year the flower was 6' tall! :) And you couldn't get near it for several days, LOL.
Mine is just sprouting, only up about 5"-6" right now. My other amorph's are just starting to sprout too.
Jody, the tall part in what I call the bloom, is splitting open now. Hope to be able to see the inside soon. I'm not going close though. Will just watch from afar.
So what does Jim think Shirley??
LOL! All he worries about is that I might let it freeze one night.
playing around on the computer today look what I found. Shirley this one is for you. I think you should get one of each. Just click on a name and a pic will open up.
I also found a variety of these today at a local nursery that I go to for $3.49 and the bulbs are as big as a goose egg and should be of blooming size.

Oh my gosh, there are some awesome lilies in there. I'm going back and look some more.
There's a few I wouldn't mind having myself. I may just go back and look through the pics again and list a few that I liked then google them to see if I can find a source.
Just what you and I need Shirley, another plant addiction!!!
I have been trying to remember the name of the ones I found yesterday for $3.49. I don't go into work today until noon so i'll swing by the nursery and check them out again for a name and maybe buy a few more.
Be careful David....if you plant a lot of those, you might end up with all the cats in the neighborhood at your place while they are blooming. That or some of the turkey buzzards Susie and Kristi have talked about. I really liked that short one and those that are different in color, like yellow or green. Great site. Thanks.
The 28th of March, it started drawing flies and today it is still smelling bad. I thought the smell was gone in two days, Bob? The whole thing opened up a lot more several days ago. I just never remember to take the camera outside.
Lol Shirley he did warn ya! They still fascinate me, I don't have one but would give it a try.
Peggy, I'll save babies. I don't know how long it will take for them to reach blooming size though.
Forgot to say that Bob was the guy that said it only smelled bad a couple of days. I think he must have had a sinus infection when his was blooming. LOL!

Lets see how you survive the bloom first. lol I would love a baby when you get them. Thanks.
I received my amorphophallus paeoniifolius bulb in the mail today and boy is it U G L Y!!!!!! I thought hte konjac bulbs were big and ugly but boy has this new one got konjac beat!
Sounds like you should have gotten you a clothes pin, Shirley.
