Have fun, Margie! Your plants will probably double in size by the time you return. I was gone 36 hours and could not believe the difference, spring, ya gotta love it!!!
I Didn't Need or Even Want Another Brug!
I haven't seen any moer on MC..I would really like to get this for a dear friend that will be visiting me sometime early next year..This is the only plant that he has ever asked me for so I will try my best..If there are any going around .PLMK. Thanks cinnabor
I was at work two days ago (I work at a small nursery center in town), and a co-worker told me that we had received 7 pallets of tropical plants that morning. I promised myself I would 'look, but not buy'.... RIGHT!!! I head on out, and right in front were TWO 5 gallon sized Miner's Claim brugs! I was so excited, I snatched one up before it was even priced.
I don't have a picture yet, but it is shorter than yours, Candy. And it already has both buds, and a few emerging blooms that should open up tomorrow or the day after. What a beautiful plant. The white sections of the leaves almost glow in the dark.

If anyone finds them, count me in too, Pleeeeeease!!!!
I know i am the 130th person to say this but WOW WOW WOW !!! Gorgeous...so glad she yelled loud enough for you to hear....that's one awesome Brug !!!!!
Margo
If anyone finds a source for this brug, I'll gladly pay you for plant, shipping and your time. I would be happy with a small plant, rooted cutting, etc. If it is easy to root, even an unrooted cutting would do. If so, please either send me a private message or an email.
I was up in McKinleyville yesterday during the HGBF Garden Tour, and Miller Farms had 3 of them. I didn't see a price, but I'm sure they were about $30-$35. I almost talked a friend into buying one!
Lori
Hi All,
I found one of these at a nursery in the Napa Valley last month. It's about a 6 ft specimen. Just moved it from the pot into the ground this week. It's actually my first brug. I bought it because of the varigated leaf. The one I bought and the others I've seen do not have quite the dark green in the pic above. Wonder if they are fading from the sun since that pic was from March?
I'm looking for a good organic feeding recipe for brugs. I have been using MG bloombuster on most of my flowers, but I'm consciously trying to switch over. Anyone have a pointer or link they could share?
I see this one at several of the nurseries in my area. Probably saw 3 or 4 in San Jose yesterday. I know a private party who buys wholesale from Monterey Bay. She has a couple in her personal collection as well. What's a shippable size plant? I could also look at getting a larger one and making cuttings. Never done it with brugs before. Could use some advice on that as well.
TIA.
Here's an update on my 'Miner's Claim' PP#15747
Is still about 4' tall. Hasn't grown much height wise in the past several months with our unseasonably cool and wet Spring season. It has bloomed consistantly, several blooms at a time which have lasted 4-5 days in the cool weather. The two in this image are on their third day.
I do keep the larger leaves stripped off of it because of wind damage and to strengthen the plant trunks of which there are two. It gets some early morning sun, then dappled shade until about 4pm when it gets some afternoon sun. It is also subjected to our strong winds on most days.
I'm sure a gift of an entire plant to a gardening friend would be welcomed and no reason the plant could not be resold to someone, but you might want to read up on plant patent laws before sending cuttings to gardening friends. Here's just one thread on DG that addresses that subject:

Good info to know. Not looking to step on any toes, especially those that have gone to the trouble of hybridizing such a nice plant.
You mention that you strip the larger leaves due to the wind. That's an issue where I live as well. While you are not getting any height added, are you at least getting decent leaf production?
What are you feeding yours?
I want this brug so bad, but am wondering if it will ever be sold outside of California? Does anyone know if any of the nurseries in LA sell it? I have a son and a brother that live there, and will try to talk one of them into buying and mailing me one if there is.
I've found that the Brugs I plant do better and grow stronger during their first year, if I strip off the huge leaves, let it flower at will and build a good root system. During the second year they seem to take off and are strong enough to stand up to the strong winds we have. Because they are interplanted with things like palms with sharp leaves they will get some additional leaf damage from sharp pointy neighbors. After a year or so they all learn to live in harmony and are doing well.
I don't coddle the Brugs I have, they get the standard commercially bagged manure that I spread on the entire garden twice a year, lots of water, and an occasional drink of diluted fish emulsion. These are all in the ground and most bloom 11 months of the years.
I have heard that it is available in some LA nurseries. As the season progresses the ones available here in Northern California are getting shorter and shorter. All sold in 5 gallon pots and priced from $30-$40 depending on the retailer.
OH MAN. You can keep brugs in the ground and bloming 11 months out of the year!?! Oh your just rubbing it in my face now!LOL Mine spend more time indoors to beat the cold than they do outside it seems. Oh well, its what we have to do in order to even grow such awesome plants.
I'm very happy for you and your weather, I'm just insanely jealous. I'd love to grow palms too. UGHH!
I sure would like to see pics of your lay out, it sounds awesome.
Jeff
Afternoon Jeff.....from a native of your fine state. Born in Dodge, relatives all over the state, although many of them have passed on now. From homesteader stock so very long ago. I do sympathize about your climate, been stuck there for more than the planned vacation during a number of winter visits to Grandma's house in years past.
There are many images from my garden here on DG, PlantFiles entries:

And lots of threads on the forums that show different parts of my garden:

If you choose threads by Forum that I have posted to it gets a little more specific.

Remember that suburban lots in California are pretty puny! My garden is on an average 1/4 acre lot....not a lot of land to garden on, but we hope to change that by next year and move to the 3 acres we bought out in the country.
