I Didn't Need or Even Want Another Brug!

Northern California, CA

'Miner's Claim' thanks you Judy.

He's still sitting in that plain old pot from the nursery.......but getting a drink or two a day and due to be put in the ground or potted up Friday. Off to the San Francisco Flower Show tomorrow, hoping to find a special pot for him.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Take your camera, I've never been to a show so I would love to see lots of pictures.

Happenstance, I love variegated plant material. And that is one beautiful variegated brug. I have never seen a brug in a nursery, of course there are very few nurseries in my neck of the woods. sure would like to find a source for Miners Claim. Just beautiful. DonnaS

Belated, early or just in time Happy Birthday!!!

Thanks for the link, it was lovely!!

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

I just wrote to Keith Miner to ask him where the Miners Claim brug could be purchased! I will let you know when he answers me!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Well, I went and looked at one and in the end I didn't buy it!! LOL.

To tell the truth I really do not have room. However, I am still debating it. I may go back.

And I know they will be all over here by summer. And some will be much bigger. Margie, I bet Roger Reynold's has it or will soon. That nursery is closer to you.

They were not big, fat plants. In my mind, I had Candy's as being 6ft tall and wide. LOL!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

And they wanted more money!! $35!!!

However, if one of you is so desperate for it, and want me to buy it for you. I will. However, I will not be able to send you the roots. And believe me it is not that I want them. Too messy and I would need too big a box and it would be too heavy. And I need to do this quick and easy.

I do not know if I could cut the roots small enough and still be viable to fit in one of those long boxes. And no way the branches would fit in the box if still attached. That box is so narrow. I will cut each stalk down to the ground and send them to you. I would think that would not fringe on any patent laws for you would have paid for the plant not me. So it is yours to cut up.

I will only send to one person. I am time limited. I would think you could discuss this off line amongst the Davers that really are dying to get this and pick one person to get it this time.

Oh some branches had tiny buds......................

Let me know

Kell, I'm not sure I could bring myself to pay $35 for it either just now, but it is quite stunning.

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

Well Kell...
Since I was one of the first to try to get it ... I'll be the recipitent of it..
I'll pay pal you the cost of the plant and shipping... or send payment by any method asap..
I 'd think the roots removed from dirt and bagged in plastic... as one part..and the branches cut just above the soil line and bagged together shound surely make a plant out of one part of it ... after the stress of shipping...
I'd also send a bit bigger box out to you.. with an address label.. [ should be there in a few days..shake off some dirt.. bag the roots and tape it to the inside to minimise clunking about,,,perhaps just put it in... heaviest of the dirt removed..
If you are still interested in helping to get this out to us..
we can manage from there... OH but I do hate the thought of the buds falling from it .. but there will be many more .. in short order ...
Thanks again there ..............................................Gordon.. awaiting spring but with a few inside flowers to keep the thought alive...

LOL Dick, a little impatient are you? Believe me, they will be all over California soon. Lots of nurseries order from Monterey Bay! Now I tell you Dick, do NOT send me an illegal cutting. Just do not!! Hear me?? LOL

Anyway, why don't you do the deal I was offering then since you have 3. LOL. 3!!

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

You guys are too funny. Kell- you have more will power then me. Someone let me know if it comes their way I'd love to buy into this. Dick- I would have done the same thing. LOL...

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

This is the letter I got back from Keith....

"HI Margie,

Brugmansia 'Miner's Claim' is a patented plant and can only be purchased in California from independent garden centers that purchase plants from Monterey Bay Nursery, which is nearly all of them. Outside of California, Plant Haven Nursery will be marketing Miner's Claim to growers all over the world. By the way, what does BGI stand for?

Keith

San Jose, CA

kell, mine seems to be growing. my snowbank is not that fussy (not like compared to sanguinea) but it is outgrowing its pot so tends to be underwatered and loses leaves often (at least that's what i think is happening). here's a pic of my miner's claim compared to snowbank.

Wow, those are great picture's on that site! Thanks for sharing them with us. I've never had the opportunity to go to a flower show, I wish they would have one down south here like this!

Julie

P.S. Add me to the list! lol

Needville, TX(Zone 9a)

Beautiful....seems like I can't quit looking at the leaves on this brug!

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

So rich with deep colors! I can't either ML :-)

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

Well I guess by the time Miner gets to Indiana it will be an old 'BRUG lol and I will be able to get it cheap.

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Just call me "Waiting in Wisconsin " so I should be cheaper yet ... lol

Olathe, KS(Zone 6a)

HAPPY thanks so much for posting that link!I would die for a show of that quality around here. I haven't ever seen the majority of those plants. That cultivar of Alow is soo cool looking and what are those perfectly shaped rounded spikey looking dudes beside it?
I still can't quit looking at that glass dome and all the air like plants etc. under it. They give me so many neat ideas that I doubt I could recreate or they just wouldn't be practical.
Anyhoo, thanks so much!

My son just got back from the mideast and it dawned on me he's stationed there in CA. Since he just bought a new truck and probably looks for a reason to drive around, I sent an email asking if he'd check the local nurseries and send me one if he found it. I was kind of surprised that he replied immediately saying he'd take a look and/or call all the nurseries in his area.
So if it works, I guess it proves "It's not who you are, it's who you know".

fingers crossed...

You are welcome JD!

Are you talking about the spikey plants in the images to the right of the Aloe plicatilis?

That would be the Mexican Grass Tree, Dasylirion longissima. (I think it might actually be longissimum, but longissima is the way it's listed in the PlantFiles ) http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/56975/index.html

And Google has a bunch of images & info:
http://images.google.com/images?q=dasylirion%20longissimum&hl=en&lr=&sa=N&tab=wi

And Aloe plicatilis in the PlantFiles:
http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/36219/

That dome garden (bigger versions too) was shown in one of the display gardens at last year's show and was a HUGE hit.

Blaine - where is he stationed? I might be able to get you some leads on where to look or perhaps Dick could if your son is down south.

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

He's at Vandenberg AFB. Up above LA isn't it?

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Candy, I love the looks of the Mexican Grass Tree. I wish I could grow it here. I need to quit looking at all these tropical plants. LOL

Northern California, CA

Quoting:

I think you're correct! But, I would have said, "He's down by Point Conception or down by Lompoc." LOL The "Up" or "Down" thing is what we Californians do when referring to the "other half" of California.

Perhaps a southern member will come along and point you in the right direction.

******
That Mexican Grass is just awesome looking stuff and "pokier" than it looks. I always run my hand through it. It's not real stiff, but the tips can be sharp; It's one of those very "in" architectural plants here right now. Saw it everywhere at the garden show.

Hiouchi, CA(Zone 8b)

Blaine

he's 3 hours north of me in this 1000+ mile long state :-)
& i don't know that area at all
if someone from that part of the world doesn't pop in
have him check the yellow pages

Dick

OK folks...here is what I got yesterday! My contact came through & I am the proud owner of..not one but two Miners Claim! I do want to keep one, but would be willing to share the second one.

So my question is...first for Gordon...did you ever get your MC brug? I know you had a post to kell to get one for you and send it...did that ever happen &/or are you still interested in one or some of one? If not...then I could take cuttings on the second one & send them to Sherry, Ted, Doris, JDL and rutholive. Or I could take cuttings & root them first and then send....Hope I didn't forget anyone who expressed an interest...I know Dick did, but I think got one & kell...

Oh, wow, Margie, I'm so excited!!! Let me know when you decide what to do. I'll be willing to do whatever to get the ball rolling....thanks for remembering that I'm interested! Sherry

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

Hi Margie...
No... I didn't get it ... I guess Kell got disinterested in following through... after my jumpping in and offering to broker the MC and suggesting how to manage it... It is another thing or twelve to do .. and I totally understand...But I didn't ask again... as is my nature... but if you've got one for someone...I'd still love to have a bit of it.. I wish things were easier for them to have distribution .. I'm sure there's a market out here ... maybe not as saturated.. but the east coast isn't likely to see it anytime soon... if it's so difficult to acquire in CA
How can we start?
Most everything is inside here... a few have made it up to the roof... it's still a bit cool in the evenings... and down in the 30'-40's this last week some nights today is about good enough... 72* F air temp at 2 PM... and the roof deck is at 120* F ... they will jump and shout grow when they finally get up to the heat and real light again... and they will have their chance next week... yaaaaah....
well let us know how and where the MC goes.. thanks ... Gordon

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

Hi Gordon...Glad you answered...kell is with her mom who is very ill and that is probably why she didn't get back to you.
Whatever we do, I would like it to wait until the second week in May. I will be on vacation until then.
It sounds like you would be happy with a cutting then...I think roots would be hard to send!?
Margie
