CLOSED: CLOSED: Round Robin with a Twist Part II

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

How the devil did you turn that around in less than 24 hours??? I'm stunned! You are amazing!

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

Doris, you rock! I think she knew EXACTLY what she wanted. LOL

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

She must be a much more experienced gardener than I. I think what I find most time consuming is looking up everything I don't know. God forbid I should miss out on the PERFECT plant, ya know?!?

Westmoreland, TN(Zone 7a)

wow djm906 I bet you were up most of the night looking at seed.

Thanks QueenB.

I knew there would be tons of people out there drooling and rubbing their hands together, so I wanted it out of the house before they came after me! LOL. Of course, I emptied the huge mound of seeds and went through them carefully. I did find some and added a few more for more variety. It is worth waiting for! Doris

Belleville, IL(Zone 6b)

And now, what is in the packet with the OWL on it. I didn't even notice until someone brought it up, now I am curious.

Mount Prospect, IL(Zone 5a)

I noticed the packet with the owl on it, but no name on it, and couldn't feel anything. It's still in there. Maybe very tiny seed?

Boulder Creek, CA(Zone 9a)

...maybe teeny tiny owl pellets? New dwarf container variety? Save me some... If I get it, I'll scan it and share! THINK I'M NEXT!!!

Wish I knew a way to display a map of twisted Robin's flight!

Any suggestions?

Steve

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

ask gardenwife, Steve. She can probably steer you in the right direction.

Willoughby, OH(Zone 5a)

Oh,rh3708,that is wonderful news! Twins are the most exciting thing,do they know yet whether they are boys or girls? My daughter had twin girls, and they are the most exhausting, delightful,BAD,adorable things in the world. you will have the time of your life!
Congratulations!

I'm next!!!! This is so exciting! Djm609, how big was the box? If it doesn't fit in my mailbox, I'll have to wait until the next day before I can pick it up. If' the mailman is in a good and generous mood and it's not raining, he may leave it by the gate and I can satisfy my curiosity sooner. I just checked the weather radar. The forecast is for clear weather so.... The greatest tragedy would be for the package to be undeliverable on Friday and I'd have to wait until Monday to pick it up.

BettyDee

Cassopolis, MI(Zone 5a)

I have been off line for a few days and a bit under the weather, I am so glad to see that you are all having such a good time.

I have not received the box yet that nutz has sent to me, but I am thinking maybe tomorrow!

I promise I will get it out ASAP. Since I found some more seeds that need a good home I will be adding several other things in this package also.

Westmoreland, TN(Zone 7a)

Thank You golgi,...No they said that it was too soon to see what sex they are.
But they said that in a few months we will find out.

The "Box" is here, but not in my hot hands. Mother Nature wouldn't co-operate with a sunny day so I have to go to the post office to get to get it tomorrow. I hope all of you won't mind if I mail it on Monday. Winston, one of my cats is very ill and has to be fed through an esophageal tube 4 times a day. It takes about 5 hours a day to feed him.

BettyDee

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

Sorry to hear about puss-puss! My babies are very important to me and you have my best wishes and prayers!

Regardless, taking a weekend to review 500+ seeds is NOT unreasonable.

Have fun with the seeds and hugs and kisses to furball!

Boulder Creek, CA(Zone 9a)

bettydee:

NP!!! I do like cats too! (Even though I made some naughty jokes about KimG's kitty who destroyed some seedlings.)

Enjoy Robin. Look in the owl packet & tell us what it is!

Steve

Mount Prospect, IL(Zone 5a)

I hope your kitty is feeling better soon! Yes, the box is a BIG one, but what fun to go through it.
In my haste to get the boxed mailed out the other day, I overlooked several little brown bags of seeds that came in the robin. spotted monarda and some other seeds. I will send them ahead tomorrow to srkrause, because they might not reach Betty in time. So when they show up at your doorstep, Steve, could you put them back in the robin? thanks much! Doris

Shepherd, TX(Zone 8b)

Yes, your me-meow is more important than the seeds...I'd be more concerned about mine too. My Mia is about to drop her load (which I hope she does before I go to Florida). I need to put a beeper on her wide self! I guarantee, I'd be sorting seeds while she was in between kittens!

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

shoot i got one who is preg for the first time. shes a little bitty old thing.

my cats are my babies. 4 inside and 2 outside. my oldest has been with me for 12 and a half years.

so take care of kitty . marie

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Oh, sorry to hear about your kitty! Sounds like she needs a lot of patient TLC, and I can see she is in good hands! Hope she gets some strength back soon. Give her extra kitty cuddles from me.

So, that's at least 2 expectant mom-cats along the route of this robin..... Too bad there isn't a good way to pass along a kitten or two! Our big tabby is 14 years old and has "mothered" a couple of kittens in his day.... He is remarkably good at it for a male cat without any ahem! you know..... Playing, snuggling, grooming..... has even scruffed a kitten & dropped her in the litter box when he thought she might be, well, indiscreet. We were going to get him a kitten of his own when we moved here, but he's slowed down enough that visiting my MIL's cat & romping for a week leaves him sleeping for a month, so we re-thought that. (My MIL's cat is one that he knew from a kitten, so they are great pals.)

OK, sorry, wrong forum for cute pet stories. End of digression!

BettyDee, have fun sorting through The Box this weekend!

Cassopolis, MI(Zone 5a)

Sorry I have been so slow in posting that nut4spuds box got here yesterday! I will try to get it back in the mail by tomorrow, but it might be Monday before I push myself out the door to the post office!

I hope that your kitty is all better Betty! I agree with everyone else, that the kitty is much more important! I have 2 very spoiled ones and a 12 year old shitzu tht is even more spoiled! But they come before a lot of other things in order of importance.

Forgot to mention that this is a very nice box that Nikki sent found a couple things I had been looking for and added a few that I had not gotten in to my box.

Thanks everyone being understanding about Winston. Sorry I haven't posted sooner, but my cached version of this thread somehow got corrupted and it took a few days of correspondence with Terry to identify my problem and fix it.

There are 2 owl packets. One was empty. It might have had smaller bags in it because it doesn't appear to have been sealed. The other has mixed morning glory seeds.

I'm having fun going through the seed box in between feeding Winston. There were a lot of loose seeds at the bottom of the box. I'm setting aside a spot in my garden for the 'unknowns.' I'm putting some empty storage bags in the box for future storage of seed packets that get too shredded.

Most of the seed are flower seed. I have both flower and vegetable seeds to share. Is there a preference for one over the other?

I had a quick look at the packages and I have a suggestion or two. When you add packages to the box and don't use the original package, please print the name so that those that follow can read the name. Print is easier to read. If you place the seed in a plastic bag, please write the seed name on paper then tape it to the bag. I'm the fourth person to handle these plastic bags and I have a feeling that the last person to get the box is going to get nameless bags.

Doris, I don't know how you when through the box so quickly. I'm in awe. Being a seed-aholic, I just want to savor each packet, but don't worry, I'll get the box out on Monday.

I hope when the box (es) get to me it's on a Friday so I can savor them for the weekend without feeling guilty! Otherwise I can just see me calling in "sick". I just hear it now, "Tom, you know how you got me started on gardening and have been regretting it ever since??? Well, nows it's reached epic proportions and I'm afraid I must stay home sick - you see, THE BOX IS HERE!!!! YEEEHAAAAAAA!" Of course he will understand since I just planted 20 cells of seeds for him yesterday (at the office...)

Soeaking for myself, I think veggies / fruit / shrubs / trees / whatever, are just fine. If it grows from seed, it's in!

Belleville, IL(Zone 6b)

I think veggies are ok as long as it isn't a lot of beans, which weigh pretty much in small quantities.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Proper labeling of added seed packets is a must! So-called "permanant" marker definitely rubs off plastic after even a small amount of handling.

I use address stickers, but masking tape works, as does writing information on a slip of paper and inserting it into the seed baggie (if that's what you're using). I print both the common name and the scientific name if I can find it on PlantFiles (it's generally not on pruchased packs, and most people don't bother putting it on trade packs). I also put my name as well as the DG name of my "source" and collection date (often, I assume seeds are from last year, as most folks make a note about older seeds) if these are traded seeds, or I add the company name and "packed for' date for purchased seeds. Especially if it's not a common variety, I also try to add annual/perennial, zone if tender, sun/shade, height, and germination information (especially if seeds need to be stratified or nicked/soaked). My packaging isn't up to WZ's standards :-), but I don't want people to struggle to find out what kind of seeds I sent them or how they should grow them.

With such a far-flying robin, putting your name on any added seed packs will go a long way toward helping with any identification or culture problems. Even if you don't put the rest of the information on the label, it would be possible to email you for help!

Boulder Creek, CA(Zone 9a)

Waiting patiently here. Winston, get well soon!

I was out running errands and saw many close outs on this year's seeds. 10 cents ea., etc. So I grabbed a buncha good lookin' stuff for the box. And paid for it too!

LOL, Steve. So glad you didn't shoplift!!

Yes; I throughly agree! As I am a diabetic and often handle alcohol & alcohol pads. I found out the hard way that alcohol removes "permanant" marker from plastic items, and makes it 'Run & Bleed' on other items.

Thanks for reminding me that masking tape works also for printing!

If the seeds' baggies/envelopes start to rip, tear, or get frayed, please be kind to the rest of us and secure it with clear tape so we can read information on it; or place in another (maybe slightly larger) baggie if you have any. This will help us who are further down on the list with needed information.

And I agree very much with everything else you have said too, critterologist.

I hope you all don't mind a lurker in your midst enjoying and learning with this Round Robin. I noticed noone created a map and since I have the engineering tools available, I decided to do one up for you. It proves over and over again to me how shared interests makes the world so small and lovely. I hope you guys enjoy! I was unable to follow the thread for the reverse part so could I ask that you put "Reverse:" if you get that box, I can start the other way although it will soon look like some yarn my kitties play with me thinks :)

Oh my gosh,mkeilers,that is terrific!

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

AWESOME!!! (I do, however, think that pooor Robin's gonna get VERY dizzy! LOL!)

Great job!!! I think we should add you to the list - you deserve in for your efforts on our behalf!

Boulder Creek, CA(Zone 9a)

Too cool.

How do you enter the cities/towns, etc.? I'm south of SF on Monterey Bay, North side of it, a tiny bit (25 miles) inland up in the Redwood Mtns. IF YOU WERE WONDERING!

THX so much!!

Steve

Boulder Creek, CA(Zone 9a)

Maybe a second map for reverse? We could have a race!!!

Steve

Monticello 4, IA(Zone 4a)

I found the BRR threads - here is an updated picture with the backwards rotation added in - hope you guys can see everything :)

Mindy that is really neat!!
The reverse robin is in my hands at the moment and will go out Monday morning to Gourd who is in Moreno Valley, CA.

I wish I was talented enough to do one myself, but thank you greatly for doing it for us!

Monticello 4, IA(Zone 4a)

I thought if I added towns, it would get too busy looking so just found the locations on mapquest. Hopefully I am not way off :)
Thanks for thinking of me but I am living vicariously thorugh you guys. I am starting my box for the next one to either send to Alice if she wants to start another or to start on myself after I learn how it should be done. This one is being handled marvelously!

Mindy

Monticello 4, IA(Zone 4a)

erg - wish there was a way to edit pix on the post - here's a larger one

Thumbnail by mkeilers
Monticello 4, IA(Zone 4a)

Well - that didn't work out well - guess I will have to make a duplicate map for the BRR so you guys can actually see it :)

ok - here's just the BRR

Thumbnail by mkeilers
Shepherd, TX(Zone 8b)

Would it be too much to ask to put the two different RR's in different colors, say blue and red, or red and green, etc.? This way we could see which is where...sorry, don't mean to make this complicated, but this is such a cool idea!

QB

Monticello 4, IA(Zone 4a)

I can put up all three when there is an update, you can see how both are traveling and if you want more detail - you can see that too. It's not any work at all to do these :)

Mindy
