Hello everyone, wow the pictures are so pretty. OK I am a novice to lillies, need help here. What lily, and what species? would you all recommend for a southern Texas gardener to start with? I am looking for pinks, whites, whatever. Need some expert advice here on what kind and where to purchase my first daylily or oriental or martagon lily for the hot humid south. Can anyone here help me please? Thanks in advance!
Lily Lovers... continued
I checked a few orientals in the PF and noticed that most are z4-9, 10 or 11. And orientals are so fragrant! They'd be my first pick. Checked some martagons, asiatics. L.A. hybrids, orienpet and species. Most are z9 or 10. Have fun with your new addiction!

edited to clarify my post - 'Most are z9 or 10'. Meaning as warm as z9-10 and beginning at z3-5. Sorry I may have been confusing folks.

Kooger, I am raising all of the above mentioned lily species included in your message above this one.
They are mulched well and maybe that is the reason.
I did lose quite a bunch of them 3 yrs. ago when we had an open winter and did not get the mulch on my beds.
Hope this helps.
Oh yes, I am in zone 4a.

Lady's i got Martagon's !!! And i mentioned at the previous thread, think no one red what i was talking about :(
Well i understand you were all to bussy looking at the pics i placed from the lily's i bought :)
I'm still looking for MARTAGON ALBUM, does someone got these, i'm tired of the red ones and i got seed left to share.
Hi John,
I just went back through and looked at the other thread. You did buy some beauties : ) I've ordered some of the Martagons (the purple looking ones) and I remember seeing a picture of the white one's but I can't remember where : ( I ordered some of these from Brent & Becky's, hope they are pretty...speciosum 'Album'

sadiemaewebb, thanks putting up this link unfortunately they ship orders to US adresses only. If they were sending overseas thase speciosum would be mine too, :)
debi_z, believe it or not that was just 2 bulbs and spring planted to boot. What a beautiful workhorse it was! I do really enjoy those that fade and stay pretty through the process, that La Reine sure looks like it needs to live in my garden!
sadiemaewebb, sure hope they do well for you. I believe they all should have been big enough to bloom, not to mention they don't have to work to get established in addition to blooming this spring/summer. Please share pictures so I can see how 'my kids' settled in!
rose_petalzz, I am just a novice to lilies myself, and even though I am several zones colder than you I just don't see how you could go wrong with any of the asiatics, orientals, or even orienpets. I would try to protect the orientals with afternoon shade. Kooger is right about the incredible fragrance of the orientals, but if you have more types you'll have a longer bloom season. Asiatics are the real workhorse in the lily family and the selection of colors is mind boggling. One final suggestion would be to plant slightly deeper than suggested and mulch. You'll be trading lilies in no time!
Here is Shiraz an asiatic. I don't think this one is very pretty as it fades, but I'll see what it does this year.
Gosh, that really is a 'fader', Sue. Not nice! Hope it'll behave better this summer for you.
John,
please send me your email so I can reply privately and attach stuff re shipping from Canada to Belgium. Don't know how to ttach email from outside DG.
Sadie, Mark your marties well because they may well not poke their heads through this year. Don't worry and don't go digging around looking for them. They do not like being moved. So, Year one. Maybe no signs of them. Year two - they may grow about a foot or so and them die back by mid summer. DONT WORRY. Everythiingis fine. Leave them alone. Year 3, tata bloom. year 4 taller and more bloom. year 5, shoud have more than one stem by this time.
Best success I've had moving martagons is in the spring, with s much soil as possible, so they don't even know they have been moved. So, if you just have to move them, water well so soil is sticky and then as large amount of soil as possible.
Inanda
Inanda, you got mail :)
rose_petalzz, i've never grown in your neck of the woods, but i would agree with what has been said above but would also like to add that lilies can grow in part shade. i have an area that gets full sun in spring, until the leaves blossom out, then they get dappled light the rest of the year. they do beautifully, except they like to bend towards the light. lilies like there feet cool, so mulch, limiting sun, planting behind shrubs, or with other perennials around the lilies will all aid in keeping them cool. i grew lilium orienpet 'shocking' this past year and it blossomed during some of our hottest summer days. i kept it out in the sun, oh yes it was in a container, on the asphault driveway, to see how they would do. well i was really surprised that the flowers lasted so long. they did fade considerably but they lasted a longer time than some of the orientals in the garden beds. so when they say they have been bred tougher, i believe them.
the picture shows oriental 'arena' on the left and orienpet 'shocking' on the right.
i don't know what type of soil you have there in texas, but lilies like a well drained soil, but they also like a nutrient filled loam. they do not do well in clay. clay will rot the bulb eventually. perhaps not in the first year or two but soon thereafter.
i 3 pink martagons in spring of 2003. the first year only one popped its head up, then died. i had heard the stories of not liking to be moved about and sulking, so i didn't fret. this past spring 2 came up. one started to grow, what seemed normally, stopped and then died off. the second grew stunted and then stopped just like that for months. the 3rd, well that is still a mystery as if it is still down there. ;-) so i'll see what happens in 2004. your guess is as good as mine. LOL i'm afraid if i move them from there location i won't see them again for 5 years. LOL what's a gardener to do. i have them in a part sun location. getting full sun from about 11 to 2 or 3 daily, then shaded again. other lilies are doing well in this bed, including asiatics, orientals, trumpets and tenuifoliums. any and all suggestions and words of wisdom would be appreciated.

Debi, 'Tinos' is absolutely stunning!! I think my jaw hit the floor with that one! Adding it to the top of my list! :-)
I planted 'Tinos' last fall and now I think I might have to go out and talk to the soil to see if I can get things growing! It is going to be hard waiting for that one to bloom.
that's a beauty, debi z and franklin!
Tinos is outstanding! Wow! Love the color contrast.

I think a few of these companies have questionable ratings.
Inanda - thanks for that info on the marties! I would have probably thought they died : ( Gardening sure has taught me patience.....DLs 2 years from seed to bloom...clematis 2-3 years for a good show....now the marties....but they are all worth it : )
debi z - hope you get blooms this year! Guess I'll just have to be satisfied with looking at pics for a while!
Beautiful blooms Scooterbug!!! I'll have to go check out the HD in Frankfort. It's been there for 2 years but I always go to Lowes because it's easier to get to.
Sadie , Thanks.
I do so wish we had Lowes up here. The closest is in Rockford, Il approx 90 miles away ;'(
Are you sure John? I have 3 diff. ones but they are all shades of orange, one more reddish than the other two.
Inanda who will go see if she has any photos but don't think so.

Inanda,That's what my friend said it was.
Thanks for the link you sent me ;-)
Well, do have a picture, not a closeup, though it does show the colour. This is from a garden that I look after. The himalayan impatiens is to make bit of a privacy hedge from people walking on the back lane. The lily is on the right of the rudbeckia. Will take a closeup this season.
The Lily Nook will ship to you in Belgium so enjoy....
Inanda
Thanks dear, but guess what i found today at a half an hour drive from my place.
Lilium cernuum!!! And friend said i would find Lilium Martagon Album too, so i contacted those places. Now it's only a matter of time.
And when i really can't find any, you gave me an alternative.(the lily nook)
I bought Lilium Davidii too, and you were right about the color.
Then i couldn't resist buying Lilium Sweet surrender.
Yep, you've gone crazy John! =)
Look who's talking, LOL
You will slobber all over my lilies when you get here! But just you go ahead. As long i don't slip and slide!!! breaking neck back and other bodyparts it's alright with me!
Ginny i was compairing pics with the lily at the pic i posted, the one you said it was no Davidii.
Think it might be this one: http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/66031/ then it should be 'Tiger Lily (flaviflorum)' and this were the ones my friend was selling and probable misspoke himself about the name. Could happen to anyone right.
i greww 3 tom pounch an oriental, in a container. i had done this so i could bring them indoors and let them scent the house. well the blooms opened one after the other and the 12 blossoms were so overpowering i had to put them out onto the screen porch. :-)
oh but what beautiful blossom they were. this one was on my wish list for a few years and i sure am glad it made it to my home. definately one of my favorites.
